That well known opening line from the house of the dragon trailer. Viserys was right all along. But ironically it was destined to be the boy he refused to acknowledge.
No because if you know The child needed to be from his daughter, so that is not true haha. Deanerys would not have been born and she needed to be born in the end. That was what he explained to Rheanyra. Her child needed to be on the throne and it happens in the end. The Greens just ruined the party because it got people killed. In the end the son of Rheanyra does end up on the throne but very sad because he lost almost everyone. So no it wasn't either of the children that he got from Alicent that were meant to take the throne. You can read the books.

@@-_YouMayFind_- I think it was meant to happen all along. Viserys saw his son wearing the iron crown of the conqueror in his vision and it became true. Only it was Alicents son not Aemmas. If Aegon II had not taken the crown, there would have been no war meaning Aegon III would never become king and Daenerys wouldn't be born either

The sword crossing, the tapestry, proud Otto enjoying his life’s work, the veiled & somber Queen kissing his forehead, the Septons marking his forehead,.. "All Hail His Grace...King of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men"...finally justice done to the proclamation of a new Absolute Monarch in GoT. I was blown away by the details in the coronation. It felt like watching Nicholas II being crowned in an Orthodox ceremony with all the hollow pomp & circumstance of a rotting system. It's what I'd always envisioned from a GoT coronation. Tom Glynn-Carney was terrific in bringing out Aegon's fear, hesitation, pride & euphoria all at once. I'm glad they kept the much despised Criston putting the Conqueror's crown on Aegon II's head. The Kingmaker is born! What the show's doing really well is the details, down to splitting the treasury or locking up servants. Usually the passionate debates, the treachery, the heartbreak are glossed over & we only see the regime change as "fait accompli". This bring to life the mechanism that historically goes behind a coup, which I assume is as emotionally taxing for the people seizing power. That's why I like agonized & conflicted Alicent more than her steadfast source counterpart. It feels more flesh & blood. She vacillates but her messianic fear for her children fates her to make a cursed gamble.

Did you notice they even played "The King's Arrival" from Game of Thrones with the bagpipes? I got a pop out of that.
Aegon's drip was next level here. The silver hair on the black leather is just so eye grabbing. We need this fit back in the 2nd season. And Tom's facial expressions changing in tandem with the crowd's mood was absolutely A1.
It's crazy but we haven't even seen Aegon sit on the Iron Throne yet and bro is already this drippy lol.

Tom absolutely killed it here! Hard to believe the only thing we've seen of argubaly the most important character of the show until now is them hammering in that he's a sexual deviant, ffs. There's so much more depth to Aegon and finally we get a tiny glimpse of it. King Aegon's two defining traits : depression and resentment. Depression ...the way he tells Aemond "let me find a ship and sail away" at that moment I can't help but feel bad for him. Resentment...when he asks his mother "do you love me". The childhood neglect, the burden of expectation being the king's firstborn son, the validation he always craved from his father and never got that shattered his self esteem, and finally the roar of the crowd serving to feel that void. Tom's acting during the coronation...the changing facial reactions and body language to the adulation of the crowd was unreal! Hoping to see this direction for King Aegon in S2!

A great sum up, it's why I enjoy the complexities of these characters so much, so much going on inside of him. It's why I hate the comparison with Joffrey, he is way more complex than him. I agree Tom did an incredible job as he walked down the Hall, especially when he gains in confidence and the emotion it brings out in him.
Just not really the firstborn child and that is all I say..
It's so beautiful how his mother's theme always runs in the background. Alicent is always there with him and even if they are the villains their bond is phenomenal.

This version is just too good! This has such a hauntingly beautiful tone like the "Light of the Seven".
Obsessed with the imagery when the Silent Sisters were wrapping up Viserys' body. Gloomy dimly lit hallway, religious ikons, incense burning, Alicent's silhouette beside the window with the sunlight falling on her. It's like a symbolism heavy mysterious renaissance painting. That's my type of aesthetic.

Beast beneath the boards is referring to more than Meleys me thinks. GoT phrases always had multiple entendres. Everything in this episode is kind of like a 'beast beneath the boards' and I think that's the point. It's referring to Aemond's ambitions for the throne. It's referring to Otto's brutal machinations behind his calm exterior. It's referring to Aegon's hidden depravity -- did you see the way Helaena recoiled when bowing to Aegon? It's referring to the White Worm's warning to Otto about how it's the people who ultimately enable them. As Larys said, Otto knew about the White Worm but allowed her to exist and essentially grow in shadows. That was a great way to plant a future seed. Our newly anointed king Aegon II was hiding beneath the "boards" too. Maybe we were looking at the wrong beast this whole time focusing on Meleys.
The whole dilemma about the dance of dragons is a very complicated matter, but can be summed up in a political one about inheritance:
1) Traditions: The tradition in (most of) Westeros is that of a Strict Male Only Primogeniture following the principles of Andal customs, although it can also be adapted to include females as well in case the male line dies out. So Aegon is the Traditional heir due to him being the firstborn son.
2) Legal: In Westeros, a King's word and the law are pretty much the same (more or less), they are supposed to be absolute in terms of authority. Therefore, A king has the right to appoint anyone as his heir, which make Rhaenyra, the legal heir due to her being appointed as Princess of Dragonstone if you follow the principle that a King's word is law.
The main problem is that no Targaryen Kings ever tried to 'make' Westeros, to forge a united country. Sure, Jaehaerys Ist had made great lengths in making a draft of what Westeros could be by uniting partly the Kingdom with unified laws, unlike his predecessors who were uninterested/incapable of truly making a Westeros. It was far from the modern concept of nation state and constitution though. However, a major problem from this lack of legislation is that no kings ever tried to create a clear line of succession or laws related to it, not even the conqueror himself whose main concern after the unification war, should have been to consolidate power by unifying the realm proper, especially since he believed the White Walkers would come back and that Westeros needs to be UNITED under a Targaryen to face the cold and the dark. An exemple of this is when Aenys I died and Maegor usurped his nephew's throne due to him being the eldest and having all of the conqueror's regalia. Following this, there was the great council in which Viserys was named heir, from then on, the lords could all assume that Tradition, because of this precedent, won out on Kingly authority as a choice, but never truly settled the matter.
This war can therefore be resumed as: 1) Do you believe in the King's absolute power and right to name his heir as he so please? 2) Or do you think that Tradition is the right way?

@Sneaky I mean maybe not have any kids at all then? She has 4 siblings who can carry on after her, she didn't need to have bastards. What Corlys or Laenor think doesn't matter, Westeros doesn't like bastards, especially not being ruled by them. And why should Alicent and the Greens put up with her sons being passed over for a woman and a bunch of bastards, something wich is against the law and by all the customs of the land incredibly insulting towards them? Alicent was married to the king to give him a male heir, that was the whole purpose. So name her firstborn son heir, and there will be no problem. Alicent obviously didn't go through 4 pregnancies, tended to his sickness and governed the realm together with Otto for years, so her children would go empty handed the moment he dies while Rhaenyra, Jace and Luke get everything. Meanwhile Rhaenyra did fuck all to deserve her position. No family will stick together when one side gets constant preferential treatment. That's why you should not break with tradition and laws at the expense of half your family especially when the other side has dragons too.
@Sneaky Joffrey being a bastard caused a war and the majority of the realm rose up against him. Daeron II being allegedly a bastard allowed the Blackfyre rebellion to garner this much support. Jon would never have been able to become king in the north so long as his trueborn siblings lived, so tell me again how these examples don't prove my exact point: Bastards are heavily stigmatized and despised in Westeros, what is even the point of denying it when it is shown so often to us, that people are willing to go to war over this? Therefore for Rhaenyra anything would have been better than having these obvious bastards and lying to the whole world about it. That's peak stupidity and selfishness. I mean she only tried with Laenor a "few times", she could even have found a lover who at least looked like Laenor instead. She doesn't have any excuse for this.
Again why would you expect the Greens, why would you expect anyone to back Jace's claim and "sTiCKING ToGeTher", when they have objectively the better claim and should be the heirs according to the laws? Would you meekly back down and support people who cheat and take what is rightfully yours by all the laws and customs? No,fuck that, no one would.
Alicent didn't court Viserys voluntarily, she has to obey her father, who has complete power over her. It's easy to say she should "fight for her own freedom", unlike Rhaenyra she is not a privileged Targaryen princess with a dragon who can do whatever she wants because her daddy grants her all that freedom and leeway. The idea that Rhaenyra is some independent, feminist revolutionary who fought for her rights is a joke, all her freedom and power derives from her unusually lenient father. Jaehaerys would already have sent her to the silent sisters or something for all her offenses. And what Alicent & Otto knew was that Viserys desperately wanted a son, he forced his first wife through multiple pregnancies and killed her so he could have a male heir. How are they supposed to know that the moment he finally gets a son by Alicent he would pretend he doesn't exist and instead only focus on his "only child" Rhaenyra? Corlys wanted to marry his daughter to the king for the same reason. Literally no one expected that Rhaenyra would remain the heir. Viserys is a complete cretin for this. If he loved Rhaenyra so much he should have named her heir when she was born instead of desperately trying for a son. If he didn't want a male heir he should never have married Alicent in the first place and given them false hopes.
Alicents children being princes and princesses means pretty much nothing, if they stand to inherit nothing, while Rhaenyra and her children inherit the throne, Dragonstone and Driftmark. At best they can hope for lesser positions at court. It's simply not fair considering the decades of loyal service Alicent and Otto have given the king and that she has given him three trueborn sons who by all the laws should be first in line of succession. Dorne may have gender equal succession laws, but Westeros doesn't. The Vale only ever has a queen when no male heirs were available.
Wrongfully so. King Vicerys never changed the succession and so this is some Usurper shit. What a complete piece of crap. Drunken Rapist.

I am Team Black and we know Rhaneyra and Daemon are ruthless Targaryens and have the blood of the dragon. But we forget that Aegon and Aemond are also Targaryens. One of the reasons no one really won the Dance of the Dragons. Aegon sat the Iron throne but none of his children did. But he placed Rhaneyra and Daemon's child Aegon III on the throne so the Targaryen dynasty survived!
Aegon is the most stubborn, ruthless and clever member of the House Targaryen in history.

I love this version!
Depressing new world. They make you feel the shift in power out the gate. The visuals set the tone. So does the eerie Hightower theme. King’s Landing without Viserys already feels ominous and claustrophobic. The way everything is filmed during the Otto Alicent scene. The sinister low lighting, Otto looking calm and nefarious as ever. Alicent trapped by her allegiance. The last rays of the setting sun pouring in to mirror the metaphorical window. Beautiful. Every foggy shot of Alicent standing in front of the window is peak art. The visuals do a great job of expressing the feeling of suffocation all around. "Reluctance to murder is not a weakness." Very moral. But it's the Ned trap of mercy. Her foes will not do her that kindness. Btw I laugh thinking how wild it was to insert the "every woman is an image of the mother" line. It's such a nuclear grade ass hat thing to say. The visceral reaction fans have the moment Criston is on screen..it's crazy but Criston Cole has somehow become one of the most hated characters in Thrones world!

I went for Princess Rhaeneys in that Scene she could said one Dracarys and ended a Disaster, also Episode 9 was one of the best i have seen so far, reminds me a lot of GOT Season 6 Episode 10 "The Winds of Winter" Ramin Djawadi made the Soundtrack, and Rhaeneys coming in with her Dragon is similar to the Wildfire Explosion in the Sept of Baelor.
Lol, no, she would have started a war, would have made Rhaenyra a tyrant. At the same time, such large houses as the Lannisters would be against it (they are on the side of Otto).

Rhaenyra will do the same in the future and this will be the end of her reign (and her life). So, Rhaenys did the right thing, thereby saving the lives of her granddaughters(And the Velarion house as a whole).
Think for yourself, what would it mean to kill the royal family in front of the crowd that cheered, welcoming the new king? They had many allies, and very strong allies. By killing them, she had killed both her house and Rhaenyra's family

@@jrrj8478 This has nothing to do with who has the right bloodline. Both Rhaenerya and Aegon are children of Viserys. But Viserys named Rhaenerya his true heir, not Aegon. The problem is that this society is skewed to prevent women from ruling. If Rhaenerya was a man, there would've been no challenge to the succession. Otto was able to use the sexism of the lords to help prop his grandson as heir instead of Rhaenerya. Obviously Rhaeneyra won't take it lying down, thus the coming war of succession.

The coronation part was very cool, well acted and well done, as has been the standart of the series. I dont know what they had to fuck it up at the end with all the dragon shit. So damn random. Rhaenys just killed a bunch of civilians, then doesnt kill the ones she should kill, and goes? What the hell? What ollow spectacle, stupid girl power moment, in a show that has not been that until now.
That wasn't random. She stamped her disapproval and used the dragon for her escape. And we don't know whether anyone got killed. Some might have been injured though.

You seem to be justifying the hollow and dumb girl power moment trying to devoid the character of the responsabity she has through the scene. You just dont kill a bunch of people just to show "disapproval" (except your character is a established psycho or very cold), and that killed people for sure.
@@albertocruzado2899 i think the answer is pretty much simple. That was her only way of escape after she got dragged into the coronation hall. If she stayed they would have killed her. Alicent didn't want her dead even she couldn't stop that action. Also I think you haven't noticed that alicent was standing in between her son and the dragon and rhaenys probably understands that she's looking out for her son and empathise that she has been nothing but a political pawn in other people's game that she didn't want to be a part of. There's a convo that happens between them that indicates that. And seriously?! Dumb girl power moment?! She's the leader of a house. I'm not defending any dumb girl power moment and clearly there are reasons for her actions.

@@debojitchatterjee5657 We know there is a back door. We saw that in the very first chapter, when Raenyra lands with her dragon at the beginning of the episodde. It was imposible for her to go that way or what? Thats just starting another problem. Because if she could not go there, why? There were guards there? And if there were guards, why not in the access to stop anyone from entering in the pits, something the series themselves says? The writers could have chosen to show her going through the back doors, but they choose that "spectacular" scene. Because they choose to go the "girl power" hollow scene. They wanted something "cool", and its just dumb.
And i am sorry, but for a character they have put a couple of times talking about how the "men would burn the kingdom", like in that conversation with Alicent, it is just funny its her the one who kill a lot of random innocent people in an selfish desire to escape with her dragon when she has more reasonable options (and in reality, more probable to be succesful in a world with guards, like the kingsguard knight plan of smuggling her out of the city). If it is not a girl power scene, why that shallow action scene is there then? There were no other options to write on the script or what? I just created one right now, so they choose spectacle, not sense. They didnt even put her like being even remotely affected by the carnage she just unleashed. It would have ruined the "girl power moment" showing humanity or something. Typical.
And not all the conversations with Alicent in the world can justify she dont killing them at the end. She knows that is not going to end well. You could have done the "she just leaves" thing if Rhaenys do not kill anyone, or at least, anyone who is not trying to stop her. But she demolished a lot of people and did a treat against the king. Thats war, i am sorry. At that point, she is not only a monster for killing that people, at minimun very cold, is a dumb person for doing that and not solving the civil war before it could start.
Calling Alicent a pawn is such a simplification, by the way. She is just the most powerful woman in the whole kingdom. She put kings in thrones, she rules as one, even after the king is dead. The fact that she devotes herself her duty doesnt make her "a pawn".
