Radium was also known for hollowing out the bones in the wrists of people who wore those old watches, and when they accidentally knocked into a wall or something their wrist would often shatter from being so brittle.
The Rolex Submariner used by Sean Connery in the early movies was his own watch which he wore every day and not supplied to him by the props department of the film
I’ve heard the story go in so many ways, I heard it was Terrence Young’s Rolex, he was the director of many of the Connery Bond films up until You Only Live Twice if I’m not mistaken, I also heard it was Albert Broccoli’s personal watch that he took off and slapped on Connery’s wrist in a pinch, then I’ve heard it was a stuntman’s watch and of course I’ve heard it was Connery’s personal watch. I’ve always gone with it was Connery’s own watch due to the fact that it changes straps every film but it’s always been the same watch. He’s also worn the Gruen in multiple Bond movies so seeing both watches pop up over his nine year tenure as Bond could very well prove they were both his. Granted we’ll never know 100% as most of the people who were there are gone and it’s been over 60 years so it’s a fact lost to time.
I went from having 0 watches 3 months ago. To now having 2 Casios, 2 God-Shocks, a Seiko 5 and 2 fashion watches. I'd like another Casio please you created this monster
Rolex at 8:03 was actually not 5513 but older model, because in this scene the watch used was George Lazenby personal Rolex watch. It's missing crown guards. There was article on that but I can't find it currently. In other Rolex submariner scenes in the movie the watch is indeed 5513 and Rolex 6238 pre- Daytona.
The reason he wears the big crown Sub was because the producer of the film had just checked bonds description in the original book by Ian Fleming and when bond the character is introduced in the book there was an elaborate amount of detail down to the Saville Row suit and the hand made shoes and of course the watch in the book was a Rolex on his wrist. Rolex wouldn't give the movie a watch so the watch that is in the movie was actually the producer Cubby Broccoli's personal watch and he had a smaller wrist than Sean Connery and that is the reason for the Nato strap on the watch it was all that was available to fit Sean's wrist. I just thought that you (Nico) might be interested in hearing that bit of trivia. And if it sounds implausible check it out for yourself I suppose the information is available somewhere.
Anyone that thinks Pierce Brosnan was the best Bond must be a little light in the loafers, if you get my drift. That Mama Mia clips proves it. Everybody knows that Sean Connery was the best Bond ever, and always will be. That said, I'm an old dude that remembers radium dials on watches. They were dangerous but they sure were great at night! Great channel, Nico!

That’s one story that surfaced quite recently, before that people said it was Broccoli’s personal watch, and before that they said it was borrowed from a camera man. Thruth is, it’s not even confirmed it was a Gruen. It’s just been deemed likely by the guy that spent a lot of years trying to find out - Dell Deaton. On his website the Gruen is not on the ”definite” list.
You need to find a collection with a lil less Rolex. It feels like it's a Rolex lesson everytime i tune in. And incorporate ladies watches also. Love your work. God Tier man!

One of my aunt's was a girl painting the radium onto the faces for westclox in Illinois. The companies knew it was dangerous but didn't care because money was more important.

When they rebooted the franchise they looked deeply at what people thought ”made” a Bond movie, they made it a point to identify the concept and stick with it. When Craig started they abandoned that concept, it wasn’t Bond movies - more like Bourne movies. Not bad ones, just not following the concept of Bond movies. They have slowly been climbing back to the old concept. Will be interesting to ser how the new one is doing.
Connery was closely matched to the Ian Flemong character...later actors did their interpretation. Daniel Craig was the next closest to the ian fleming character. James Bond was england's sledge hammer modeled after the ww2 era special operations executive/ assassin/ spy
