    Hi. I only just came across your podcast and watched part 1 out of interest. I’m an English style knitter who is English and live in England! 😂
    I use the knife style mostly but do also use the pen method. I also use 40cm long straight needles under arm. 55 years of knitting this way. I recently learnt the continental style for colour work which is useful. I’ve enjoyed learning different techniques. Thank you for you video 🎉

    After I watched this I started looking closer at how I hold/move my needles. I am left handed but learned to knit right handed. Turns out I am already moving my left needle instead of my right so that part of lever knitting has been easy for my to pick up. Thanks again for these videos.

    Hello Carrie I've just happened upon this lever style of knitting as I'm a left handed knitter (mirror) and to be honest continental knitting really hurts . I needed something else so I'm gonna give this a try to see if I have less pain. Thanks for for this info. Knit on any way we like lol

    I saw 'lever knitting' mentioned in an essay by Clara Parkes and had to search for it. Like some other commenters, it turns out that I had taught myself to knit this way - I just didn't know it had a name. I tension by wrapping twice around my index finger, then under the middle and ring, and over the pinkie. I work with the yarn very close to the tip of my index finger so I move it as short a distance as possible. The right needle is in a knife grip and I 'flick' the yarn without letting go of the needle. Many people have commented on how fast I knit because I conserve so much motion.

    Knitting should be a relaxing process. I agree speed should be secondary. A knitting belt can also be used to hold the right needle

    Amen about knitting faster. I always say that knitting is a pastime. It's supposed to *pass the time *. If you could knit a hat in ten minutes, it wouldn't mean as much.

  • @fixinitwithjules7925
    @fixinitwithjules7925 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for talking about the speed of knitting. There is a pressure in the knitting world the need for speed and when I am working on a sweater it is nice to be able to bust it out, but knitting slower doesn't make you a bad knitter, so thanks so much for addressing that.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. And some days you’re just faster than others. The other day my fingers were just flying. Today they’re just not. I didn’t become a less capable knitter in five days.

    Love your 2 videos . I learnt as a child to knit English style and knitted for my children. I have not knitted for 30 years. I'm now having another go and struggling with tension for some reason. Its great to learn there are alternative methods of tensioning the yarn and holding the needles. I usually use the underarm method of holding needles and never thought about how to hold the yarn but now I'm gonna try all the ways you showed . Thanks xx

    My mother taught me knitting the "underarm" way, and it is still the way I prefer. I have knitted all sorts of things (but no blankets!). Recently discovered continental, and added it to my skills (purling continental is a pain though). And I now use both depending on the project. Lever knitting will always be my favourite...

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here: I sometimes use Continental but Lever is my go to, partially because purling is easier.

    Thanks! I have been trying to lever knit for 3 years. I had given up on it when I came upon your instructions in your first video and “BY GEORGE I AM LEVER KNITTING”. I am knitting as fast as my continental style but hoping to gain more speed. I am beside myself with excitement. Your instructions are so clear, and easy to follow. Keep on teaching girl!

    You made my yarn heart so happy. I tried knitting almost 10 years ago and just couldn't get comfortable. Ended up switching to crochet, which I love and have gotten extremely comfortable with. Jump to about a year ago, I was gifted a knitting machine and realized I really need to get comfy with knitting overall. Because I developed enough comfort from crocheting, it was much easier to just do it the way I wanted. I found myself doing this weird English style but not English style. You hit the nail on the head, it's freaking lever knitting! I had no clue. Thank you so much!

    I've enjoyed watching these two videos. I was thinking if you could break down the content into shorter videos and do them in slow motion, it might help visual learners more and give people a chance to try it out while watching you. Also, if you could repeat the steps one more time while you are discussing the technique, that would be most helpful.

    I just wanted to say thank you so much for making these videos on lever knitting. I have a repetitive injury that likes to flare up when I knit a lot and I started to knit socks and gripping those tiny needles was killing me and I thought I’d have to give it up. But with lever knitting I don’t get that shooting pain up my arm and can make all the socks I want.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I’m so happy to hear this has been helpful and you’re able to knit all the socks you can!

    Well what do you? I'm a lever knitter using the knife grip! I always thought I was an English thrower but no, I totally guide my stitches with my left needle. I thought it was just something I do as a left-dominant ambi but now I find out there are others out in the world doing the same thing. Cool 😎

    I was trying to learn the lever knitting from part 1, following along with the underarm (I have long needles), and have recently learned continental. I accidentally mixed the 3. Much easier on the wrist for sure

  • @PetraRobinson-gm8nh
    @PetraRobinson-gm8nh ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh, this is how I learned to knit. I wonder if I can convert to flick, that is when you do not let go of the kneedle, I think.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pink Knits has videos on flicking. I occasionally knit overhand - usually if I'm working with 9 inch circulars. I don't let go of my right needle.
      My back fingers keep hold as my forefinger pushes the yarn around. And my left needle is moving the stitches on and off like a shuttle.

    These two videos on lever knitting were so enlightening, thank you. I am going to practice, practice, practice. I wanted to add the videos to my playlist on knitting, but the second one doesn't give me that option. Could you get this fixed?

    My mom used the knife grip and heldcthe kneedle still and with her index finger close to the end of the right needle just flicked the wool over the end of the needle. She loaded the stickesxwith left kneedle taskes practice but you can do it. So its,a flick withvfc tbgg e index finger. My hands now hurt so I am goingvto try the pencil grip.

  • @MFinlan
    @MFinlan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for sharing this! English style is in my blood and I could never go continental - I've tried and it just feels wrong to me. Lever knitting with the pencil grip is the answer! I'm more efficient and comfortable. And thank you for your insight that quality work, efficiency, and comfort is what matters.

    Thank you! This was the perfect video at the perfect time for me. I've been trying to teach myself continental but it's so damn hard to unlearn English style. I don't hate continental but after watching your videos and giving it a try it was immediately so much easier and intuitive. Glad to find someone talking about a method that's not just continental :)

      I"m glad you found the video so helpful. The needle I used was the Susanne's Ebony 14" knitting needle. I got it at yarn.com. However, I do not believe they are carrying its anymore. Lantern Moon has some, however. amzn.to/3bZus8b. Also, I'm. a big fan of Knitter's Pride Karbonz needles. I have the set in 10" set and interchangeable circulars. They are made of Carbon Fiber and have a very similar feel of wood with a metal tip. amzn.to/2E7pYji. (Note: both links are affiliate links. As an Amazon affiliate I earn on qualifying purchases)

    How do you cast on to start lever knitting?

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's not a special cast on to lever knit. My go to method is Continental long tail cast on so I'm holding the right needle in an over hand grip. I have a video Cast Ons every knitter needs to know where you can see what I do for a birth of cast one th-cam.com/video/6KeEccyeVSc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=37q2igl49llxzQ06
