I know this is old but wow! Great educational video. I really like how creative you are with your survival tactics, and love how you use resources like the poison or the bamboo and turn them into instructional survival moments. I'm not a bushcraft expert like yourself, but to add a bit of science to one of the topics you mentioned. Around 18:00 you discuss the tendency of the bamboo to absorb moisture from the air, and you're completely correct! Salt, as well as the cellulose fibers that make up the trunk of the bamboo, are what we refer to as "hygroscopic", meaning that they have a tendency to absorb moisture from the air. At higher humidity, this effect becomes more profound, because the air is saturated with more molecules, and so essentially you provide an easy place for the water to go by having these hygroscopic materials nearby. In chemistry research and food science, highly hygroscopic materials are very useful to us. That's what those packets in your beef jerky are. Since beef jerky is heavily dried and often cured, placing a hygroscopic material (also known as a desiccant) with a higher tendency to absorb moisture than the food allows it to stay dry and fresh for longer! So in this case you're trying to ignite the cellulose fibers, but the actual cellulose molecules themself are saturated with water molecules. You can think of it as dissolved water on the surface of the cellulose fibers. This is great for plants, as it allows them to hold moisture, but not so great for trying to start a fire!
Friend, those land crabs that you looked at and let go are delicious, with just those you get the same meat as a lobster, just put the big claws on the grill for about 10 minutes and that's it.
There was a group of twenty-something idiots that went out to an island in the Bahamas near the Ragged Islands. They knew nothing about surviving, fishing, being outdoors..nothing. they took a tent, gallon of water each, small knife each, fishing line and a pack of hooks and a sheet and I think a pot or something. Luckily the guynthat dropped them off at the island gave them a radio, first aid kit, flares and some rain gear. They got about 2 days into the challenge and drank all their water. They were ,ooking for brown hairy coconuts to drink from beecause they thought the green ones didn't have liquid. None of them knew how to fish and lost all their hooks but one. One girl was allergic to shellfish they found out and luckily they had benadryl in the first aid kit. They couldn't put up the tents and weren't smart enough to make a shelter so after day 4, they were suffering from exposure. It rained every day and they didn't think to collect rainwater, but the rain was also making it cold and they had no fire. The sheets were wet and the tent wasn't put up right so it leaked. We were passing by and caught their mayday calls. Then as we were coming in to get them on the yacht tender, they started firing flares at us because they thought we were pirates since our yacht was painted dark grey and red and not white, that equated to pirates launching from the mother ship. Total morons. This was in early 2001. Thenguy that dropped them off planned to check on them after 3 days but the rain kept him from going out and then he lost the GPS point on his handheld GPS so he wasn't even sure which island. Once they got aboard the yacht, they really took to that. Showers, food cooked by a chef, a bed, AC, drinks. Started trying to boss us around. We got them inland towards Nassau where we were going anyways and handed them off. It remains one of the dumbest things I ever witnessed in my life.
I knew of a party of people who went out on a boat, the Minnow, totally unprepared, expecting it to be just a 3 hour tour. To make a long story short they hit a storm and got shipwrecked somewhere in the Pacific. Hilarity ensued.
Why help them pollute the gene pool? That’s literally how a species survives. By not letting the wetodded and insufferable ones have wetodded and insufferable kids.
I love the idea of not only surviving but also striving on the island, it just shows you could actually survive in a situation like this and dont rely on a boat coming within a certain time
i love how not just he gives us something entertaining to wtach but also that precious knowledge and tips hands down like a cherry on top. i love you mate, thank you.

That was a great technique how to start a fire. I saw another one using a clear water bottle filled with water or a plastic bag with water and using sunlight to magnify it. . Great skills to know. This one was new for me! Can you eat the moray eel? Good tip on those coral crabs that they are toxic. Definitely lots to learn. Keep up the great work. Peace,Dennis
I've seen that technique before but this guy made sure all steps were filmed well enough and explained well for replication. i don't remember if this is is called the fire saw or the fire plow method.
Game Changer... uninsulated stainless quart thermos bottle and some 1/8th copper tubing. Makes for an EXCELLENT desalinator /destiller with fire allows for copius Drinking water or coconut spirits. The coil and all fits into a paint can which also serves as a stove for the device.. Reusable trouble free tool. And it floats. GL Mates!
You've never been to islands in the South Pacific, have you? They are littered with plastic. Some times, to the extent that you have to climb over it at the high tide line. 😢
Hi, it really helps the fire if you make it on top of rock/stones. the rocks/stones conserve the heat. And maybe you can make some big scoop-up net with the coconut leaves, instead of trying to catch the fish by hand. Regards
In a survival situation when you only have a hip knife, you need to preserve the cutting edge at all costs. Utilize the sharp edges of the spine for making woid shavings. Use the cutting edge only when absolutely necessary. This is your life. Be resourceful and find alternate ways to process fire making materials. Use rocks and trees to break long branches. Save that blade if you want it to save you!
Just remember everyone, young coconuts are better for drinking. Older coconuts will go right through you, giving you diarrhia etc. older coconuts are GREAT for cooking with though. But if you are thirsty, drink what you can find I guess at the start.
Just thinking Strick...that surely among all those people that came ashore, there had to be one if not three that had a cigarette lighter or matches. Wouldn't the bow system of lighting a fire be less labour intensive.? Enjoy these survival episodes. Keep em coming. Atb from across the ditch.
Jack, is this a one-off? or will you continue this series? I was thinking that I have watched you catch and eat lot's of things, but I haven't seen much in the way of shelter building. I know that the water and food are the most important things to have, but shelter is also important. Regards.
They won’t go bad overnight even without refrigeration or storage. Those are rumors the health department came up with. 2 days is max,you shouldn’t eat any fish after 2days or more without being frozen or refrigerated.
@@bobbie7355 Wow fr,I’m from Houston,I use to always be in Galveston lol haven’t been out there in a minute. But yeah it’s usually with any fish. Shellfish tend to last a little bit longer unrefridgerated tho

Those land crabs would have done the trick. Back home in Jamaica we would boil them and eat them or roast them in the fire and eat them, just pop the heads off and clean the guts out then dine like a king.
I've just launched a new Survival Challenge Series re-visiting some epic stories, hope you enjoy! th-cam.com/video/HAnX2XLI8g4/w-d-xo.html

Should have just left them on the island or took them back. I wouldn’t have put up with them acting like that on my boat.
