The young Carnatic singers borrow from Hindustani music, using Raag Chandrakauns’ spacious shape to colour an abhang (‘uninterrupted’ devotional song).
    Learn more about the music:
An abhang is a devotional song in praise of Vitthala, an incarnation of Vishnu, who is often depicted as a dark young boy standing on a brick, arms akimbo. The word translates from Marathi as ‘uninterrupted’, referring to the form’s continuous poetic flow, which originates with ancient Varkari poet-saints of the Maharashtra region. They are typically exuberant, and are used to celebrate the communal experience of pilgrimage.
Here the abhang is set to the Hindustani Raag Chandrakauns, a spacious, distinctive, and comparatively modern scale. It cannot be easily classified into any particular thaat - instead it resembles Malkauns with a shudda instead of a komal Ni, to give SgmdNS. The shuddha Ni is played prominently, profoundly recolouring the mood. The raga becomes tenser and less introspective than Malkauns, lending itself to faster tempos. It is often borrowed into film music and Carnatic song.
Ranjani and Gayatri are sisters who sing and play Carnatic music on violin. They were born into a musical family and their talent was recognised very early (it is said that they could identify complex rhythmic patterns and hundreds of different ragas by early childhood). They trained within the family, as well as receiving violin lessons from T.S. Krishnaswami and vocal instruction from P. S. Narayanaswamy. They are notable as prolific song composers, and for fusing ideas from Hindustani and Carnatic music.
Recorded for Darbar on 17 Oct 2015 at London’s Southbank Centre
    -Ranjani & Gayatri (vocals)
    -HN Bhaskar (violin)
    -Sai Giridhar (mridangam)
    -Giridhar Udupa (ghatam)

In this song Saint Tukaram (in poetic touch) warns us of the bhoota (ghost ie. actually referring Bhagavan Panduranga) which will posses anyone stepping into pandaripur and which won't leave (ensuring moksha ie. without another birth). After listening to this soul stirring performance, I feel that hearing this by itself will make one be possesed by that bhoota, without even visiting pandaripur. What a divine outpouring! Long live Indian culture and tradition. They have put in such good use of their high end classical carnatic music training. They have learnt singing abhangs in traditional manner.

That is the broad-mindedness of Tamilnadu and Tamil culture. Embracing every language & the inclusiveness which you cannot find in any other states in India.Rather there will be debate among many & name calling when Tamil language is appreciated or being centred. Many many instances, I have noticed and observed the impartiality and hatred by MANY if NOT ALL.

    Divine!
Every year in the month of Aashaada, July, Warkaris ( pilgrims) in thousands set out from the village of Dehu, to walk around 230 kms. to Pandharpur. They are joined by thousands more on the way. It is a sacred journey that takes them to their Dearest Vithoba and Devi Rukmaiee, enshrined in the temple at Pandharpur. As they walk they sing these bhajans, a thousand sustained voices rising in song to the accompaniment of dholak, ekthara and dhothara, manjira, karthal, thabla. They sing the songs of the Bhakthi Saanths, like Saanth Thukaaraam. These Saanths were the great singing souls who helped keep the spiritual strength of India from failing in the fierce adversities of those times.
Even if one cannot sing, just walking along with the pilgrims will be a transformative experience for anyone.

yeah, Maharashtra was ruled by Kannadiga and Andhra dynasties for thousands of years.
The Telugu Satvahana Empire ruled Maharashtra from 200BCE to 200CE (400 years).
The Kannada Empires of the Badami Chalukyas, the Rashtrakutas and the Kalyani Chalukyas ruled Maharashtra from around 600CE to 1150CE (550 years).
The Bijapur Sultanate aka Adil Shahi Dynasty, which used Kannada, Persian, Urdu and Marathi as court languages, ruled Karnataka and Maharashtra from 1550sCE to 1660sCE (about 110 years).
This was why Kannada was widely spoken and hugely important in Maharashtra for quite a long time.

This is sheer poetic brilliance of Saint Tukaram, wherein he uses satire to compare God (Vitthal) to a Ghost, who hypnotizes or in a way jinxes anyone who goes to meet him, so much that the devotee will never return back to the material world, through recounting his own such experience. Tukaram was permanatly devoted to Vitthal for his entire life and thus he says that the Ghost (Vitthal) has jinxed me too.
    Superb poetry and superb singing!

    जे गेले, नाही आले परतोनी
    तुका पंढरीसी गेला
पुन्हा जन्मा नाही आला..and the song has few more stanzas. The video embraces just the
first & fouth stanzas. Just 4 lines. The SWARAS & the JATI take us to another level.

@Azor Ahai, This Abhang (devotional song to Vitthala of Pandharpur) written by Saint Poet Tukaram of Maharashtra is in a poetic form known as Ninda-stuti (criticism-praise) which is akin to a roasting. Saint Tukaram is "roasting" his Lord. Here is my attempt at translating it in Hindi. I hope you can read Devnagri script

I have lost counts how many times I would have listened to this beautiful abhang........each time hearing it brings tears & goosebumps though I don't understand all those words but can figure out the bhava in it......don't go to pandaripur.....there's one bhooth (demon) pandaripur lord who will capture & will never let you go off .......so rapturous feeling........
Beware people! Pandhari (Pandharpur) is haunted by a dreadful ghost. Be careful when you are passing by this place or visiting it. This ghost nabs every one going near the place. If you are afraid of being possessed by the ghost, change your path or just cancel your plan in the interest of your (so called) well being.
That was literal meaning. In the hindsight, Maharaj wants to suggest exactly the opposite. He hints, if you stay away from the place, you will never have the divine experience which is possible only in the company of Vitthal-Rakhumaai. (Rukmini is referred to as Rakhumaai in Pandharpur and elsewhere by devotees.) And this is possible only if you go to Pandhari. The place will possess you when you will reach this place. You will loose your own self, ego, desires and the earthly beliefs. Thus, in no time, you will experience a closeness to the God.

Yes. I agree marathi culture is very similar to south.
What commentor meant was no Hindustani singer tries to sing kirtanam from south saints.
But here they train marathi abhangas in chennai also along with karnatak music ( tyagaraj, purandara das , etc)

    • @tejasvi18joshi
      @tejasvi18joshi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

S KK there is reason behind it. Dhrupad is original ancient Divine classical music and vocal. Carnatic and Hindustani originated from it. Carnatic vocals are very complex and difficult while Hindustani is easy in comparison. Though prior to 13th century there no differentiation bw north and south classical music both were same. But after invasion and temples demolition, Northern musicians and singers had to perform only in courts and they had to change the music, raag and talas. Venna and Mridangam replaced by sitar and tabla. If you notice in carnatic, singers clearly pronounce the name of God and goddesses because it was developed in temples but in North it is absent because it was developed in courts.

They were raised up in North India. South Indian musicians are usually comfortable in singing in north indian languages. MS Subhalakshmi, Aruna Sairam, Bombay Jayshree are examples. North Indian singers singing in south indian languages are rare. An exception is Kaushiki who sings carnactic compositions of Balamuraliji

@@darbarfestival No, I didn't mean it in a bad way. Quite the opposite. The percussions are so good (that's what I meant by ridiculous). The singing is in a different league as well. 11/10 for the whole performance. I'm obsessed. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Unknowingly we the entire BHARAT get connected through our cultural aspects like MUSIC and DANCE.. This is very strong and. Our individual language may be different but Culturally we connect 100 %. I listened to one story of NAARASIMHA by an ASSAM friend which is exactly the same as what we know. Vaishnavi Devi Temple story is major PRASANGA in YAKSHAGANA in DAKSHINA KANNADA District of Karnataka for the last 100 years or more.
These BHAJANS bring us closer .. Thanks a lot .. This is befitting use of technology TH-cam

I think... it was a minor misunderstanding of beat maybe... which sometimes happen when you are too much involved in alaap...and when you come out you have to look.... Ohh what matra (beat no.) is going on... Btw this is my opinion... And forgive me if I interpreted that wrong.

Marathas ruled for 300 years from Tanjore. They protected our Hindu traditions and our music and enriched our traditional practices... a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.. when our great poet Subramaniaya Bharati sang his immortal songs during our country's independence, he sang : Singha Marathiyar (Maratha Lions)... you should look at Maratha paintings etc on display in the south!

Hi. Very nice Chandrakauns. Briefly Carnatic Music 🎶 aalapanai (1 to 3 kaalam/avakasam) then Keerthanai / melakartha raga). Whereas I'm bhajans Abhang etc. A jumpstart on charanam and alaap intertwined style is of high standards. In violin 🎻 alaap due to audio clarity tampura music 🎶 gliding along is heard too. Hereinafter me would end with E. and O. E. A compulsory addendum. Thank you.
