Ranjani and Gayatri are sisters who sing and play Carnatic music on violin. They were born into a musical family and their talent was recognised very early (it is said that they could identify complex rhythmic patterns and hundreds of different ragas by early childhood). They trained within the family, as well as receiving violin lessons from T.S. Krishnaswami and vocal instruction from P. S. Narayanaswamy. They are notable as prolific song composers, and for fusing ideas from Hindustani and Carnatic music. Listen to more of them here:

‘Murchana’ (1:10) describes the concept of modality in Indian classical music. In this instance, the sisters begin in Raag Chandrakauns, a spacious, distinctive, and comparatively modern form. They allow the listener’s ear to settle into Chandrakauns’ scale of SgmdNS, before then refocusing their melodies on Ma, creating the illusion that it has become the new Sa. The resulting scale is Madhukauns (SgMPnS), a popular night raga. In a sense they are still in Raag Chandrakauns, but have rotated the scale’s centre of gravity to produce a new essence from the same notes. Jasrangi jugalbandi [male & female vocal duets] sometimes employ murchana by having the female singer treat Ma or Pa from the male’s scale as the Sa of her own. Some consider this fascinating concept to be the closest that Indian classical music gets to key changes, modulations, and thinking in distinct ‘layers’ of music.

The concept of 'Moorchana'/'Murchana' seems to have confused some people, so I'll just give an example (from the Hindustani tradition) - take the scale of Raga Bhupali: SRGPDS. Now, sing SRGPDS, with S on the R of the previous scale. In other words, you'll be singing R but saying S, and so on. Interestingly, if you sing it twice or thrice and carefully observe, you'll notice that you've sung the scale of Raga Brindavani Sarang: SRmPnS, although with a differently-pitched S. If you do it with other swaras, you'll get Raga Durga and Raga Malkauns as well.
Amazing. I am also a student of Hindustani classical singing but did not ever hear about it.
It takes a life time for a normal musician to find out the thin line between these two closely knitted ragas..!! The casual & easy handling shows her expertise..!! Simply amazing. 🙏🙏

@@adamp108 murchana or Grahabedam is a process where different ragas with either 1 or 2 notes in common is woven together and presented. Think of it this way, 8, the top is raga A, the bottom is raga B, they come together at the centre. You can start singing 1 and when you reach that common note, you can choose to sing another raga. It can be 2 or 3 or 4 ragas if you wish. It is extremely hard to find them, practice and master it. I have listened them sing 3 raga murchana. I was completely blown away
@@adamp108 if you don't know about Murchana , we take a raga . I'll give you the example of mohana raga . It's scale it's S R2 G3 P D2 S and descending scale is S D2 P G3 R2 S. and if we assume another scale from this but taking R as Sa, according to the swarasthanas it becomes madhyamavati . This is what murchana.

@@adamp108 pannmattral gruhabedham or murachana refers to basically modal switching in western if you're familiar with that. From any given non-vakra raagam up to 7 others can be formed each by taking the notes of the original raagam as sa. For eg. If we take shankarabharanam and sing from ma to ma, we get Kalyani in the 4th Shruti. This is basically what murachana is. It's pretty heavily used in Tamil pann music and carnatic music as well it's a very difficult thing to do properly becuase if you don't emphasise the starting note of your mode it can sound like the original raagam and not convey any emotion that's different.
Notice that the words “I present two ragas at the same time, through a device called murchana…” were also spoken in perfect shruthi with what she was singing... Mind boggling performance...Goosebumps!
Since many of you are trying to understand what was done by the maestros in this video: The artiste starts off by singing G,M - which is actually the true position of N,S based on the Sruthi.
She goes on to sing G,M,D - which is Chandrakauns. At 0:59 she sings S,G,M,P in the true Sa position, which makes it Madhukauns. She alternates between the two raagas through the performance using this concept of graha bedham. Amazing execution!

Brilliant. For those who are wondering what the easiest way to understand grahabedham or murchana is... here is my humble attempt to dumb it down... for example take Shankarabarnam... sing it from rishabam to rishabam... from lower ri to higher ri... (changing the reference of sadjam in the same sruthi to rishabam) you get karaharapriya... sing it from gandharam to gandharam... (ga as sa) you get thodi... you can use this to play around with what raga you are portraying... try it on a keyboard or an instrument and it is easy to see. But God!!! It really requires a different level of expertise to pull it off the way the maestros have done here... brought tears to my eyes... thank you for such divine music!!!

Your ”anger” will melt into sublime experiences when you listen to these two ragas separately! May I suggest Chandrakauns on flute (baansuri) by Pandit Hariprasad.
Only supreme talent AND rigorous practice (saadhana) can create such a magic.
Am tempted to imagine how elevating it would be if both these learned ladies (vidushis) sang a jugalbandhi of full-fledged, pure Chandrakauns! Or, raga Madhuvanti separately.
