My personal notes people may find useful: - don’t be sentimental about all your shots - no more than 2 min. Less with not as good shots - 2-3 shots from each video - communicate your role on a set and let your reel reflect that - demonstrate who you are as a human being - make a reel of the WORK YOU WANT TO BE SHOOTING, *make separate reels* - get opinions from other filmmakers about what to remove - remind people youre still crushing it - email to new potential prod companies or directors you want to work with COLD CALLS! - REEL is a RESUME send it to a new client youre interested quick tips - avoid transitions - color grade, re color grade older stuff - add lots of sound, make it so textural - drone footage isnt important Again, best shots ONLY! no blown out highlights, out of focus etc
If you don't have enough strong shots to make a reel then you are not ready to make a reel. So true. I find myself in this position. But that's part of the journey of becoming great at what you do. It takes commitment.
To add to Danny's very strong list of recommendations, don't stress about the music as much as you might think you should. Most people watching your reels are watching hundreds or thousands of reels, they know in the first few seconds whether they want to work with you. So keep it short, keep the music non-polarizing (like Danny said,) and make every shot count.
I'm so new to the cinematography world that when someone asked for my reel I had no idea what they were asking for. I sent my personal favorite video and looked like an idiot. But it was a good lesson and for the guys like me that didn't think you need one.... you definitely need one!
The fact with a reel that needs to show who you are as a person got me. I ended up changing my whole reel and made something completely different. Thanks for helping me out after being stuck for weeks... Sub!
ngl I thought this channel was gonna be just another cliche TH-cam cinematographer giving me tricks and tips for my career, but I've grown connected to you as a creative and as someone I aspire to connect with irl. Keep up the good work brother! You are amazing
I can't stress it enough: you are freaking awesome. You present things in such an easy and natural way. It makes me realize how simple things are. Thanks for that. And yeah... The youtubey transitions 😬. I personally can't watch those because they make me feel like I am on an unmotivated roller coaster ride.
dude you are a beautiful human being and a dedicated creator, I have learned a lot from you during the past couple of years that helped me improve my craft.
*I love the note about transitions -- I've been saying this for years!!* Flashy transition templates are used to cover up poor editing and lack of storytelling. They show me that someone lacks ability vs. has it. Also, just found your channel and love it!
So lucky that the youtube algorithm put you right on my Grid ! It is a new inspiration and i am feeling pumped again to create stuff thank you a lot, definitely gonna binge watch your videos !
The shot in the water with the girl is beautiful, i love the way the movement of the water matches the movement of the camera. Great video again Danny, your videos have me wanting to refine everything about my craft. Much love🙏
Hey Danny, thanks for the honesty. I really enjoyed this video, as I am working on my own reel. The best tip I think is the last one - if you dont have enough good shots then its better to focus on improving and learning rather than creating reel which tries to only sell you without proper skillset and experience. That is very crucial and important to understand - there are seldom shortcuts no matter how much we would all love to be out there just doing what we love. There is a journey to take and the better one understands that the more rewarding it will be for him and the clients in the future.
Your easy to listen to...youve hepled me a tone wanted to create my reel this week and i was super lost on how to but now i know... Getting you from Nairobi, Kenya so you are actually teachung the world ...thank you
I remember when this channel was at about a couple thousand subscribers. So proud of your growth Danny, thank you for your tips and insight as a video creator!
I'm finding it very hard to even film/shoot anything. Before COVID, I'd be outside everyday shooting concerts, free events etc. I don't even know what to do anymore :(. I'm practicing my editing though (adobe premiere/after effects)
Could tell you loved us by the way you talked throughout the video. I expected the ending to say it more in your voice, but then you spoke the words out loud and caught me off guard! Anyway, thanks very much for the tips. The insight in the text at the bottom of the screen was a helpful touch, too!
Danny Gevirtz The week in Antarctica was amazing, the 4 weeks stranded on the boat a bit less haha !! In quarantine at the moment but at least on Australian soil :)
You know I'm the kind of guy that loves you back, a lot, just because of your last words right there. That would suffice for me to sub, but then I remembered what I just watched before that loving moment - the exceptional presentation of awesome craftsmanship. I love you too, a lot. Wish I was you, a little.
Incredible Reel Danny, what it says about is that you keep it real. And this connects with who you are, in the following explanation of making your reel, I pick up that you are a guy who keeps it real and natural. But you also remind people after working hard not to take everything so seriously. I've seen many impressive reels and inspiring work the last 20 years, yours is one of the most inspiring I've ever seen, thank you Danny.
Danny, I've been binging your channel over the past couple days and I have to say you're knocking out of the park. Love the content, love the vibe, and I love you too man. Keep it up!
Man, thanks for your precious insights. I find myself in a situation where I need to apply to a job. And those tips might save my ass. Huge thanks for that !
this was broken down very well !! thank you for taking the time to make this video ! As a beginner film editor, I feel like I have a much better grasp on what I actually want to include in my very first reel
Woah, damn! I knew you were good, Danny. I knew you were a great teacher, absolutely inspiring and caring, but damn, boy, that reel tho! You should be really proud, bud. That’s one of the best reels I’ve seen. Beautiful work.
Just discovered your channel not son long ago Danny. And I'm impressed! Keep putting out some great work and giving some love to the filmmaking community as we do!!
watching this years later as I get ready to put together my newest reel- thanks for the Inso Danny :) (it is also so endearing how you end your videos with "I love you")
Ok I am in love with this chanel, how is it possible that for every question I ask myself I find a youtube video here :O Thanks a lot, really my fav chanel this year.
Danny Gevirtz haha of course dude. It’s great that you can just sit there and talk normally instead of yelling into the camera which 99% of videographers on TH-cam do, so, thank you for that!
I really enjoy your channel.! Thank you, for sharing your work w/ us Danny.! I like your reel especially the last image w/ your name inside the rock formation.! Very cool.! 😎
@@DannyGevirtz to you. this channel is pure air in a rather messy platform. which leads me to something that I was thinking about... can be a video about your internal process for filming a youtube video an idea worth considering? or a combination of the thought process + technical process for doing it. Dude! Thanks for this. Cutting a new reel (and TH-cam channel welcome video) has been on my to-do list for 2 weeks! But it always feels like such a BIG mountain of a job. Thanks for sharing your simplified approach!
I am reminded why I subscribed to you! So much information to be given! Thanks for all of the advice. This helped me out a lot in creating my own reel.
I needed that last part thanks im just getting started in filmmaking and can't get any jobs yet and its getting my motivation down so thanks for this !

The "I love you" really touched me. That's so sweet. We love you too.
Man, this is the most underrated channel of all time, love you too man, you are amazinggggg. Keep up the good work 💪
Parth! Appreciate you a ton bro!
Subscribed when he genuinely said "I love you a lot". THANK YOU for the pointers!
Very informative and straight to the point. Thank you answered my question first minute into the video!!
Thanks so much. Editing my first reel now after 5 years of creating vids and found so much value in this. You're a legend.
