As an American myself, I can certainly empathize with the juggling of emotions between the States and here. I never, ever suffered from 'homesickness' because I knew I could always go back at any time. I made sure to 'go home' every other year and used The Netherlands as a perfect jumping off point to travel through Europe in the alternate years. It's been over +30 years since I first came to Holland and I still keep that option 'open' although at 74, it's quite improbable that I'll find myself living anywhere else than in my adopted country. I sense in the two of you that you'll be returning to America after the two years are up, but we'll see how well you adapt (especially to learning the language, which be so frustrating at times, but vital). Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.🌹

Like we said, it changes from day to day how we’re feeling. Thankfully we still have time to make our decision, so we’ll see. We do very much like our life here, but a lot can happen in a few months time!

@@TAndTGoDutch What's that John Lennon said? Life happens when you're making plans. Ain't that the truth! We have the best of both worlds if you think about it. All the best of luck in your decision making guys.💞 P.S. Should you decide to go back to the States, you could still have a vlog showing how it's like to 'really' live in America.🌹

I'm in the same situation living in Ireland for 16 years.I finally cut my US ties and can't imagine wanting to live there again.I do have children there still but few other relationships. I would have been positive to living there part time as I did for a number of years but the mass shootings, political turmoil, and most specifically health care have made me decide to stay in the place that is best for me.

Living in Santiago de los Caballeros for 12 years, my favorite Dutch meal is Nasi Goreng Sate. In the Netherlands I did eat it at least once per week. Even in the Dutch Army, every Friday we would get Nasi Goreng or Bami Goreng. Another of my favorites is real Italian pizza made by real Italians. I miss it here, we only have here US pizzas (Pizza Hut), a lot of melted cheese on something tasting like bread.

For the few times you miss having a car, we've really grown to like MyWheels. It's a car sharing service and their cheapest package is free per month and then something like 3-4 euros per hour plus 30-40 cents per km (including gas / battery power). We use it for short trips to the hospital or the milieustraat and it usually works out to 10-15 euros total. So far, we've always had one available within walking distance when we wanted it.
Greenwheels is similar and Snappcar is more useful for longer trips (you rent someone's personal vehicle from them then. We use that one for trips to family abroad on occasion). One of those might suit your needs for those few times a year as well :)

I honestly get the car thing. I myself don’t drive here as I can’t exchange my American license. But my partner does and it’s been really nice. We aren’t fans of big cities/popular cities, so having a car has allowed us to explore the tiny towns and hidden places that most people don’t go to. OMG thanks for answering my (difficult) question! Fun fact about COVID briefings; Andrew Cuomo was actually gaining (fame?) during this time because he did daily briefings that a lot of New Yorkers (and others) were tuning into. It was a mix of daily metrics and topics about mobilization of supplies, healthcare system updates, etc. Because of those he was being rumored to be good contender for the White House, but of course we all know what happened with him afterwards.. as far as immigration, it is overall a difficult issue because the country is growing in population so much per capita. In the USA at least there is so much undeveloped land and so much room for expansion still. This is not the case in places like Holland where there is also a housing crisis. This is behind a lot of negative opinions behind immigration. I'm so glad to hear your relationship was strengthened by this adventure you two are both on. I hope you will get to have a bigger family soon. You don't need to put so much pressure on yourself to make a decision to stay or what not, just enjoy the time and keep going while it feels good. If you got the beautiful city of Maastricht, also visit the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten. Maybe you’ve already visited it, but if not, it is 10 km east of Maastricht, bus line 350 from Maastricht Station to Aken (Germany) has a bus stop at the entrance. It is a Second World War military war grave cemetery with more than 8,000 American soldiers buried there. There are also memorial tablets for the more than 1,700 missing. There is a tall memorial tower with a chapel, a Court of Honor, reflection pool and statues, to commemorate the enormous effort the Americans made to free us from German occupation. It is worth a visit, to honor and commemorate that. It is truly an overwhelming, impressive and cruelly beautiful located cemetery in the Limburg hilly fields.

It actually is not allowed to pie in the canals, although it is done.
It is disallowed, not because we are prude, actually far from that nudity is more accepted here than in the USA, but because of cleanliness and also quite some people drown on a yearly basis when they are drunk and fall in the canals.
So I would not recommend copying that behaviour although it would give you a nice youtube video for back home 😂.

I thought, and I know it’s a personal thing, your immigration was about family planning and the virtuality clinic. My questions would be more about this, like didn’t the health insurance struggle with these wishes as a new Dutchy. Like dental you can insure yourself for high costs but the first year you can not make use of it if it’s a planned predictable intervention. IVF et cetera are in the basic health insurance I believe for up to four try’s? So I’m more interested in that part of your lives and the struggles or the cons. It’s personal, but it does make you’re story more unique

    • @TAndTGoDutch
      @TAndTGoDutch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, absolutely, we moved here for multiple reasons, but having a family is a large part of that. As far as the insurance goes, we didn’t struggle with it as much as we thought we would. With Travis’ previous cancer diagnosis and our need for assisted reproduction, we decided on the highest quality tier of insurance possible. Ours covers three IVF cycles. We’re actually about to start our third IVF try soon (our first worked, but ended in a chemical pregnancy, and our second didn’t take at all.)
Thank you so much for your interest and curiosity, we’re a completely open book about our experience. ❤️

I once met a Karen here in the Netherlands when I noticed a car with Californian license plates in a super market parking lot. The car looked empty so I took a picture of it. When this obnoxious blonde woman came out of it and loudly started complaining about me taking a pic. Someone later told me that it probably was a car of a US military member who was planning to export it to the US. Because there is no way that car could have been driven from California to the Netherlands.

I am fairly certain you already know this, but never EVER use the toilets in the trains.🤢Especially for ladies... it's a nightmare... Tip: if you can afford it, travelling per first class in NS trains is usually less iffy when it comes to cleanliness.
Also, future goal: vacationing home in Ireland?😎😁
Pro-wrestling?! Holy crap that's cool! So no Hulk Hogan (I only know him due to the A-Team🤭), but how about Dwayne Johnson? Besides the Dutch guy? He seems capable of the show element!
Gaming is one of my hobbies, believe it or not! Ever tried Baldur's Gate? Or Mass Effect?
If you ever go to Austria; defo don't skip Vienna. Also, it's an option to do a 3 golden cities trip: Budapest, Vienna & Prague. These are often travel options due to the history of the Habsburg empire. But Vienna on its own is absolutely amazing. Great for foodies, music lovers and history buffs. So besides skiing, don't forget to go back for the capital. Also, in the south of Austria you can find the area Carinthia. It really is beautiful for summer holidays!
I totally get that it is hard to leave a country behind and start a new life. I totally respect your view, but, if I may shower you with unwanted advice🤫🤭... 2 years to decide might actually be too short. Especially because you lost a lot of time due to Covid. Life was on hold for a long time. Getting some roots down, getting to know culture, gaining new friends and feeling comfortable will really take time even for ppl moving for one area to another in NL. So don't get discouraged if things don't move along in the mammer you imagined it would when you first moved here. It will happen, just... slowly. Aside from missing your family, trust your gut and heart + take in account any children you might have & the environment they'd grow up in (again, sorry if I cross a boundary here!). That all said, wishing you an awesome year and hope The Netherlands will gain 2 Dutch citizens instead of losing 2.😉
Oh, tip! Tracy, as an English expert, if you'd ever be interested: teaching English as a native will probably get you a job at a school before you can say: 'job'! Good to combine with a family or writing + you can do this easily as a part-timer. If you teach at college (MBO) it takes a one year course to get your qualifications, which will be paid for by a school if you'd apply.
Star Trek vs Star Wars. Both is defo the correct answer!😃
    Have a lovely week!

How about the difference in commercials and billboards between the USA and the Netherlands? I think it’s really strange to see billboards everywhere and having them even related to religion.
So many people have signs in their yard with their political opinions. Sometimes it’s the party they vote for but also signs that ridicules their opponents. I’ve traveled to many countries but I’ve not seen it outside the USA.

I've seen some in Canada too and those caught me off guard. Somehow I always think Canadian politics are more civilized than that.

Definitely different! We’ve mentioned the billboards, commercials, and political ads in a few of our videos. We definitely don’t miss that at all!

@@TAndTGoDutch some seem also to contradict each other. I have seen anti abortion billboards next to billboards advertising for guns “we have over 4,000 firearms in stock!”
I must have forgotten about the billboards in your videos because I watch all of them but didn’t remember. I am already subscribed to Soul to Soul Travels too ;)

@David C. W. Yes! My favorite is in Houston where a Christian billboard says “you’re going to hell” next to a gentleman’s (strip) club. Hilarious!

Apart from keeping them clean (hence fish do prosper there,
      it's a self-forfilling hoax that most canals aren't
      healthy.
The pissing act is a theatrical element of the band. It's an ACT !!

The peeing in the canal in unison sound extremely weird to me. Never seen such a thing. Maybe it’s some strange tradition in Leiden, or a prank they pulled off? Definately not a common thing.

As you are into food, maybe this video is fun for you? Noir was a musical duo from the UK that hosted an 'avant garde cooking programme' in the UK and they recorded different versions of their song 'Walking' and adapted it to the culinary tastes of different cities in Europe. This link is for Amsterdam but they have versions of Barcelona, Paris and Hamburg. Maybe a bit dated, but liplicjing fun:th-cam.com/video/22gqrhV34G8/w-d-xo.html

Houston? Say hi to Pecos Hank from me if and when you walk into him, will you. After all, Houston isn't that big.
And if you love to watch the awful beauty of a developing tornado or lightning capture, he's your man. (and a left wing progressive on top of that...)

The unison peeing is just weird. I wonder why - it sounds like this was not the first time they did that. Maybe this is a solution to 30 men all having to go at the same time during a short break in between making music? But still.. weird!
