Can't forget those browned portatoes, absolutely the best! Glad you got it in the video that Jul roots back to our old norse roots (before any christianity was going on here)
I work as an organist and always got home to late to see it. Then a few years back I started working at another church where I get off just in time to watch Disneys juleshow. To my horror my husband has neglected raising my children (now 15 and 18) properly so they don't understand why their mother think it's absolutely necessary to watch it... 😂
Half Danish American here. I loved the video. ❤🇩🇰🇺🇸 I sure miss Jul i Danmark but I cook a traditional Danish dinner and my kids and grandkids get their presents on the 24th.
Unsure where you have the idea, that the tree has to de decrorated with gold and silver stars - most people I know use a variaty of colours. Also fun fact - Julehjerter used to have candy put in them, alongside krammerhuse, so at the end of the evening, kids got to "eat the tree"
@@RobeTrotting højt fra træets grønne top it’s a Danish Christmas song And in the lyrics says Først skal træet vises, siden skal det spises. First the tree must be shown, then it must be eaten The text was written as an occasion song for the family's Christmas in 1847 by Peter Faber

Mojn xD you should try and get a person who speaks the sønderjysk dialect it uses Æ Ø Å a lot.. + the fact i speak a dialect under 250000 people in the use makes me both sad and proud !
In Scadinavia we count down until Jul, which is why we start celebration on the 24th and that lasts 3 days with various gatherings. Most countries go by the concept that santa arrives on the night of the 24th, and so too here. So that is why we count down to 24th, as the start of Jule, which starts on the 25th.
The calendars are/were probably my favorite part of Christmas. You get a bit of chocolate in the morning and a few other things for when you get back home again. There will be a little hint about the days episode of the tv calendar and you’ll spend most of the month thinking, maybe it’s this year I win the big amount on that scratch off calendar. On the 23 th my family used to split up, where my mom went to her mom and decorate the Christmas tree and my dad went to his parents and did the same. My sister and I who are twins would then switch between them year to year. But both of my grandparents on my dad’s side have died in the recent years, so now he just stay home with one twin and make some good dinner. We also got the tradition of starting at 13 on the 24th because my grandpa got sick. But it has been like that most of my life, so it’ll be a tradition I’ll try and continue. We dance around the tree first and give gifts before we eat, because then it’s out of the way.
Nice video guys and you cover most of it for sure!😀👍🏻 Can't help feeling a bit offended though about how we decorate our house as "boring". Where have you been?😮 Almost everyone I know, including myself, have our house filled with tinsel, julehjerter (Christmas hearts) nisser, angels, candles, stockings, more nisser and even more nisser! Seriously. Imagine just every window pain, shelf and basically every flat suffice packed with nisser. And of course the indoor electric lights. Sorry you missed it. ❤️🎄🥂 Still. We are not Americans and they go full blast I know, but I won't say it's boring. ✌🏻 Merry Christmas 😊 Glædelig jul 😊
I guess out of things specifically mentioned here is the late start and people trying to keep Christmas only from post-thanksgiving (Black Friday until Christmas).
I'm a Dane and most of this video is correct. But not the pronunciation of any danish words by far. But Danish is one of the worlds languages to learn that is most difficult only surpassed by the Chinese dialect of mandarin.
For a foreigner to explain that Danish Christmas is strange is like a Dane saying that those who speak another language do it in the wrong way. Haha 😂 Christmas is Nordic, even before Christianity arrived. It must be us who decide what the right way is 😁
Danish flags on christmas tree, is a over 100 year old tradition. It is because we celebrate that we got the southern Denmark (Sønderjylland) back after WW1 (in 1920)
@@RobeTrotting But other than that pretty much spot on xD with slight different depending on where in Denmark now a days it does slightly change away from some traditions 🤷♀️
Well it isn't the first christmas beer. You can get Carlsberg 47, Grimbergen Noel, Hancock Merry x-mas and a lot more, before the horrible Juleøl from Tuborg. In the viking age, the origin of Christmas was because of yulefest, which was a big gathering at the longhouse, where you prepared and ate the last fresh produce you got, so it wouldn't get spoiled, and then you were fasting indtil fastelavn aka there was limited supply of food up here in the north :P Then the Christians came and said that Jesus was born accidently at the same time as yulefest.
We talk about it in a lot of videos, but we love Denmark - we feel really lucky to love two countries and get to experience two cultures. We miss a lot of things about the US, and had a great life there, and love our lives in Denmark too 😊

I will say the decorations are very individual. Some people go with the clean Scandinavian type, some more traditional Danish, some more American style and of course many do a mix. As far as the candles go it’s getting quite common to have electric candles on the tree cause fire hazard same with Lucia although it depends on the place and the older children the more common real candles get. But I do remember in my kindergarten I was the lead girl and the wreath which was a little bit too big had real flames and I was soooo nervous. But when I got to real school we just had the electric ones that look like real candles
Sorry to tell you, but you forgot Julekål (stewed white cabbage with a sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar), browned potatoes, Æbleskiver (whatever shape you can get pancake batter in is acceptable) and mulled wine galore, AND cookies. So many cookies.
