  • Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke (DFB) - New level crossing with retractable rack at Oberwald
    (Canton of Valais, Switzerland) 2010/08/22.
    The 2010 newly built level crossing at Oberwald on Furka road. The first half of the video shows the level crossing open for the cars and bikes with the rack which if retracted inside the road so the cars and bikes can easily cross the railway track. A volunteer wearing a fluo jacket is waiting the steam train to leave Oberwald station. He is ready to manually command the closing of the level crossing when the train will come. You can see that, before and after the level crossing, the rack between the rails is higher than the level of the road.
    When the train finally comes, in the second part, the volunteer manually commands the closing of the gates When the gates are closed look, in the middle of the road, that the rack is put in up position at the same level as the rack before and after the road. So the train is able to cross the level crossing by gripping the rack continuously!
    This system is unique in the world!

    The 1st time I came across Furka Pass Railway was in 1986 when it had been closed for a few years after the by-passing tunnel opened and I could only hike along the abandon track. You can imagine my sheer joy when in 2012 I went to exactly the same spot covered by this video and saw the departure of the same little steam train. After I saw the train off I then jumped on my car and raced the little train along Furka Pass. Unsurprisingly I beat the train even though I stopped a few times along various view points taking pictures of the train.

    I thought the rack would be left out of the crossing, but that would lead to excessive wear if the gear had to reingage at every crossing.
    In Tasmania they use the Abt system. According to Wiki the rack on the approaches to the crossings were spring loaded to facilitate the meshing of the gear.

    Sounds like the Swiss like Harley's, either that or they're of a Twin-V configuration. Cool video, I liked the way the train whistle echoed through the valley. Too bad I don't have the money, I think I'd like to live in Switzerland, those Alps sure look cool. I love the snow and the mountainous terrain. Here in Buffalo, NY we don't seem to get the snow we used to get, and the Adirondack Mountains are a few hours away, oh well.

      I live @ the other end of Lake Ontario, in Watertown..I think Mother Nature flips a coin to see which one of us gets POUNDED, in the snow belt below me & north if Syracuse they always get it, meanwhile we can enjoy not being quite as famous as the last times we made world news! Yes bit of a drive sometimes but living in NY we do have access to GORGEOUS areas, metropolitan Canada and Canadian wilderness, we have so much to enjoy in the Northeast..but the "exotic" factor of the Alps gets everyone! I was wishing I was there too, seeing all the motorcycles, oh, I don't want to leave my daydream!!😄

    At least now I get what is meant by "retractable rack".
    This is a COG-RAIL line.
    My mom's late brother Burley told me on a few of his vacations out in Colorado, there is a cog-rail that goes up to the top of Pike's Peak.
    These are mainly used for grades at about 5% or higher. They are not normally used on grades less than 5%.

    The rack is stationary. The plates on both sides of the rack rais and lower. When raised they provide a slight hump protecting the rack and providing a smooth path for vehicles over the rack.

    • @Funimag
      @Funimag  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not correct otherwise no mobile part would be needed. In fact on the road, the rack is hidden below the level of the road. When the barriers are closed, the rack raises up before the train and goes down below the road when the train is gone and the barriers are up. See the following video DFB 5 to have a better view.

    • @Funimag
      @Funimag  3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Do you know the history of these cog steam locomotives? They were built in Switzerland at the beginning of the 20th century to run on this line then transferred to Da Lat in French Indochina before WWII when the line was electrified. Once the Furka tunnel was drilled in 1983, this summit line was abandoned and volunteers decided to put it back into service with the original steam locomotives. They found them completely rusted in 1990 in Vietnam where they had been abandoned in 1975 after the Vietnam War. They were repatriated from Vietnam to Switzerland where they have been completely restored and now circulate on this line which saw them at the beginning of the 20th century!

    Why is the cog necessary for a stem engine? Is it because there is a steep incline on the track further up the line? [and the steam engine does not have the power to negotiate that incline?]

    • @Funimag

      It is a mountain train which goes from Oberwald (Valais) to Realp (Uri) and passing the Furka Pass at more than 2400 meters high!... the gradient is steeper as normal railroads so a rack and pinion train is necessary (steam powered or electric ).

      The rack looks like a center rail with gear teeth on it. The locomotive grips it to climb steep hills without slipping. It retracts back into the road when the gates come up.

    • @Funimag
      @Funimag  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes... when there is no train the rack is retracted inside the level crossing so cars and bikes can pass over it without any trouble. When the cog wheeled train has to pass the level crossing, the rack with teeth is lifted up so the cog wheel under the locomotive can grip the teeth to climb the slope.

      Not really, as these lines traverse mountain passes and as such go up/down both sides. However, as these lines were intended for heavier traffic when built, the grades aren't as steep as they could be. This means that the carriages don't need to be equipped with cogs, as they have sufficient braking force. This also means that just one locomotive braking in front is safe when going downhill.
