Nicely done.. Just a heads up.. While you're right that some 9pin joysticks can be used with "some" modification, it should be pointed out that "some" is actually quite a bit. It's not just wire swapping and trying to plug in a regular stick could be bad...
@Darrylb500 ah thankyou for that starship info, i wonder if my cart is a late version or something? interesting indeed, as for the self centering i fixed the pad now so yeah my apologies on that one, thanks for the feedback
According to Wikipedia, shortly before it was discontinued they were planning to release a Vectrex II that featured real color. I'm surprised they didn't try to bring this thing back a few years later after the crash had ended, especially since it was initially successful.
As a suggestion, you might want to add in your info box that the joystick IS self-centering, it's just that the one you have isn't. Some vector games can have the filled-in look, just like the arcade Quantum, and the bitmapped Y*A*S*I. Yes, Star Trek is the same as Star Ship, but you somehow have the hack with the different Klingon look and the pause function included. Interesting... And the "box" warps you to the Klingon mother ship, although you might have found that out by now ;)
You explained pretty well how a vector display works as opposed to raster display, so the light beam in a vector screen has more freedom to move, HOWEVER, i still believe that the light beam inside the vectrex could also behave & move in a raster pattern in order to be able to track down the position of the light pen , I own vectrex with art master and the light pen wich is cool.
nice review of the vectrex. actually the joystick is self-centering, the springs inside of your controller have to be broken. you can find tutorial on youtube how to fix that.
@Rockythefishman i kinda like the humm to be honest, its how the Vectrex is supposed to sound, you cant take the imperfections away or you ruin the nostalgia :D
out of all the console reviews of yours ive been watching this is one i dont remember at all. not advertised or on shelves. i just dont remember this system ever :(
No, your cart's definitely a hack, you can see it here: vgdb dot vectrex dot you know what (TH-cam won't let me do a link, or just do a search for the Vectrex database and you'll find it). It's Star Trek Debugged. The only original GCE-released Vectrex cart that had a pause on it was Spinball (or maybe it was called Flipper Pinball in your neck of the woods). You're welcome for the feedback, and glad you could fix it!

I remember as a kid finding this box in my grandma's garage without the actual system, I never knew what it was until now, great video!
WoW! This should have more views because its such a well made and professional made video.

Well put together, informative video! This looks like a great machine for the time that it was released, and the portability is amazing ;)

Good review mate, you have really done your homework on the system. There is a damm good diy fix for the humm if you are handing with a screwdriver
Well done review! Very professionally narrated - Chipsturs quality I'd say.
@markvergeer thanks for the feedback, its always appreciated
You were good at Asteroids! I like the look of Star Ship. :)

So Star Ship was basically released to tie in with the movie Star Trek: The Motion Picture?
