Two tips for it: Hold 'Mode' for it to disable the motors and go into standby (this is helpful when you don't want to keep reconnecting to the Zhiyun app during short breaks in filming, or if you need to handle your phone without putting stress on the motors) Triple tap 'mode' for selfie mode and will turn 180 degrees to record you with the rear camera for better resolution. One negative is that while recording in the Zhiyun app it doesn't all 4K. I love mine, but it definitely sticks out whenever I use it.
I think Michael B. said that you should put your finger on the 'Mode' button and hold it to let it go to standby mode. There shouldn't be any hold button. Michael B. can clarify.
it is absolutely worth it. I love this little gimbal. I take it on all my trips and on hiking trails or just cinematic shots. The footage you get is amazing. You can also adjust all the settings using the zy assistant app, by default the joystick settings were to quick and jerky so I lowerd them so when I use the joystick is slower but alot smoother and easier to control.
There are two apps to download, the ZY play and the Zhiyun Assistant. The assistant app is used to calibrate, update, and make adjustments to roll speed, pan speed and so on.
I sent my 1st one back in June it had major software issues & the apps were a complete shit........ Just got confirmed last week that issues had been resolved & bought my new Q arrived yesterday and I just love it
Great vid BigBallvlogs! I struggled with fast moving action too...like at an air show. I finally figured out that a double tap on the mode button puts it in a different, kind of look straight mode. The phone stabilizes facing forward, relative to the handle. It takes some practice, but it works well for just pointing with stabilization. Just don't touch the joystick.
I just brought it home! Got it at Best Buy for 139.00. It's still charging but I know I'm gonna love it. I will be using mine to add "Video Walkthru" to my Real Estate Photography business. Can't wait!! Thanks for your video.
There's an accessory for this gimble so you can use Action Cams with it as well. It's essentially simple - an oblong plate with a machined square hole for the camera to mount into, held there by a dinky little bracket and a couple of screws. Use it as it comes and your camera will "see" the front motor housing so if you get one, use the Selfie Mode with three mode button presses - it'll swivel through 180 degrees and face forwards perfectly. Of course there's no app functionality using this - but being able to use these little cams as well does extend the usability of the gimbal. Works just fine.
Great down to earth video thanks. I have just got my Smooth Q. I am still learning with it of course. Only thing is I suddenly realized that I had gone against the very reason I have the Galaxy S8 ! The S8 shoots great stills and video and I put it in my pocket until I might need it. Though smaller than most the Zhiyum adds another dimension to bulk if I am going to carry it around most of the time. Do I even send it back and put money towards a small compact with decent stabilization.
I bought the smooth Q and liked it, I went and bought the smooth 4 also, it has a few more buttons and a zoom/focus wheel, I use mine more than my other GoPros and stuff, I think mostly is because I always have my phone on me, and this gimble is quick and easy and holds a good charge, and you can also charge your phone by plugging it into the usb on the bottom of the Q. You can get an external power pack and plug into it, or plug into lighter port on your car. If you decide to keep it, I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for the video.
I've had mine a week and it's brilliant. 3 quick taps of the mode button and it flips round to face you. I do get what you mean about carrying it about but if you're vlogging what would you rather carry, this or a gorilla pod with your phone mounted on top and shaking video. I've added an anchor wide angle lens to my s7 edge too.
Thanks you about the 3 quick tap, didn't know about it. I was thinking this was stupid to make a 180°turn with the app and i couldn't go back to initial position.
Ah! The best "eureka" moment I've seen here on TH-cam :) I had the EXACT one yesterday when I've tried it out for the first time. I guess you didn't do any specific settings for a slower movement horizontally?
Did you know you can can hit the mode button 3 times and that spins the phone around 180 Degree for selfie mode. I discovered to this a day after I updated the firmware "160"so I'm sure if the feature was there before.
Im still trying to figure mine out as well. Cab it auto pan. ie between 2 points have looked in the app but confused by things like foll rate ctrl rate etc... any help greatly appreciated...Thanks
Just purchased this SMooth Q and it works great. Except for face tracking as that is not available on the Android app! :-( Hope they will fit it. The pannning and tilt are adjustable in speed if you want. It's all in the app.
Really, here the track button doesn't show up on the screen. Can you make a video where you demonstrate on how it works? Also support admitted that it 's not there "for the time being".
Just a buyer beware, I got 2 test runs out of this, and it never worked again when I picked it back up 8 months later. Recalibration doesn't help. It's like the motors that control the roll are seized or something. They make a high pitch noise, and really half hearted effort to face the device (iPhone 8+, or GoPro) and never even gets close. I'm trying to find out if they warranty this for a year.
HI..great video...could you please help me out as the pan function is not working for me, I have done the calibration and firmware update....but still pan left or right is not working...any suggestions please?
Just got one for Christmas. It seems to tilt a lot to the side with my iPhone 6 (I take it out of the case). Should I keep trying to calibrating it? Sometimes I feel like it just isn't sure which way is the right way it should be facing and it stays sideways with my phone. I kinda have to move it back up into it's place. Do you have to ever do that with yours?
Hey There; I got the smooth Q last month. I use to do Steadicam work, so I wanted to try this. IMO it does a fairly good job. You have to really learn to run or walk with it to improve the "glide" illusion. Even with a full steadicam rig....you have to learn the walk or run....What confuses me is the modes and how to get to them. I find that a bit frustrating. It would be nice if there were some light indicator that told you what mode you were in. I find myself pushing the mode button and then discovering that I'm in the wrong mode. That tends to ruin the shot pretty quickly.
Unable to successfully download firmware, calibrating the gimbal was challenging until I stumbled upon a YT video depicting the proper way to position the gimbal for calibration. Gimbal went from fully charged at 100% to 0% in less than an hour of use (Twice). The modes did not behave in the way depicted on your video and other review videos I watched. Within the Zhiyun assistant App, I found the FAQ returned a 404 page. Also, the camera feature in the assistant app was missing photo features - most likely due to not being able to update the firmware. I could go on and I will on my IG live stream tonight.
Ladies and Gentlemen! I found it for 124.99 USD www.gearbest.com/gimbal/pp_620374.html?wid=21&lkid=10665074 Cheers th-cam.com/video/bdTJt4inEMM/w-d-xo.html
Man, I can't even get this thing to connect via Bluetooth on my S7 making the app worthless. Got a message to update via computer on their website which is all in Chinese. I heard the app sucks but I just need the limited app function to change pan speeds
I have one and I love it, a little tricky at first but the more you use it the better it get, I only use the app to change The pan and tilt speeds. All so good for GoPro. If your phone has image stabilization in it you should turn it off for a smoother shot
I have the Osmo Mobile which I use for my videos but it was pricey back then. For $139, this is definitely a good buy and the results from your video show it works just as well, especially the stabilisation while running...
nice review, I'm getting mine next week. so... how do you avoid those little sublte movements when standing, i saw some demo videos from people and some have those movements but some don't, is there something specific I have to do to avoid them?
I felt corny using it when I went back home when I went to NYC last week....but the footage is so smooth it's hard to NOT use it. Active track I think is only for iOS.....and look up the vimbal c from feiyu......I would of possibly considered it but I got my smooth q from Best Buy for under $100. They price matched some sketchy site for 108 and I had a 20 dollar gift card so that's really really hard to beat.
BigBallVlogs yup... I like the grip cause it looks more comfortable..... But I'm happy so far with my smooth q. I just wish it was a smoother transition from landscape to portrait but I have to admit my phone is huge (s8+). With that said Zhiyun opened up the door for inexpensive but quality gimbals. Now if only they could do the same for my rx100 or for dslr's and the industry as a whole will allow for A LOT more stable youtube videos.
thanks for a good video.......... this is a great product ... sadly slow software support for Android... hopefully Zhiyun is addressing this....... best way to learn is exactly as you have done in the video!!! go out and use it!.... off on a trip to Korea soon so we will be putting it through its paces!
I have to admit, these things have a hard learning curve and become very frustrating. I see a lot of gimbals are being bought, yet in my walks around Chicago I have yet to see anyone using them, lol. I'm going to delete the app off my phone and just the phones camera app to film things. Thanks for the cool vids!
My son just brought me one for my new google pixel-2xl. I have a question for you. Did your phone get really hot when using the zhiyun? We had it on for maybe ten minutes and the phone was quite hot. I wonder if both devices were not charged up well enough? Going to try it, again, later today...., after I watch your video! Cheers!
It's worth it. You can have it In your vehicle or travel bag and be ready to go for any event. Plus it was only $139. That's not a little money but compared to the other brands it almost a drop in the bucket. And you did say you like it. So don't second guess it. Go out and shoot stuff. Have fun with it.
Great video!! Iwas having a really hard time getting it pair with my moto z play smartphone. You got me fguring out how to make it work. Do you recomend any app for recording professional video with a external mic? thnx take care
well i saw the bigger the accessory is more likely for it no to hold the weight.. so is small it might.. or you can use the bottom part of the handle it has a little hole for uou to attach something like a light or a stick..
Uce Supreme grab a gopro mounting accessories kit. I have a light facing forward and my cell facing me. Using a gopro 5 hero black it brodcasts to my cell so when i vid my self i can see if im in shot. I then push the mode button 3 times and it flips the camera. I just edit out the flip. Also the flip designates a transition in editing. All this is mounted via the tripod adaptor in the handel bottom. Good shooting!
The back motor is the one that controls roll. For it to be overworking and heating up I would suggest that you may not have the phone balanced in the gripper. It phone needs to stay level and balanced when the Smooth Q is powered off
Nice spontaneous review 👍🏻 I'm In the same boat as you, but I just got mine yesterday. It's my 1st gimbal, so I think it's just going to take some practice. I am probably going to return it and get the crane-m though, this will give me some versatility to use it with iPhone 7 , Sony a6000 (with small lens), and my rx 100 v.
+TechnologyHack guys modifying the Q to use with a compacts. It might work with a small lens. I'm going to do mine so I can use it with my lx10 or phone. I was using it with the hero5 black with out the holder accessory. I just turned the flame to the portrait position.
I got it for $80 on eBay. I guess the price has gone down. I do travel with my Smooth Q. I just got a DSLR and plan to get a gimbal for it soon but don't plan to get rid of my old gimbal. Behind the scenes camera can be a smartphone. Behind the scenes will also have buttery smooth footage lol Does anyone know how to use the Smooth Q in portrait mode? I don't want to make a horizontal video for IGTV.
It shouldn't, and lock mode is very useful for hyperlapses. Quick tip - Press the button 3 times to go into selfie mode. You can also invert it by tilting the gimbal 90 degrees sideways twice
Hahaha this the best smooth Q video I've seen. I have one and I'm figuring It out as well. And this gets straight to the point! Thanks!
I just got mine for $44 on amazon. Great time to get one!
Glad to see I’m not the only one who still trying to figure this thing out.
I was frustrated at first but perseverance and patience finally paid off. After only a day I am comfortable knowing that I will figure it all out.
Yours is the 1st helpful Smooth Q video I found now that I have one. Thanks for your video!
+Melissa McNallan Thanks. I just posted a video about the app improvements
+Melissa McNallan I'm also working on a setup and use tutorial.
I'll check it out tomorrow. I've decided one new thing with Smooth Q a day until I have it down :-)
Great video , Keep em coming !
because of your video I have hope for the smooth Q. Just bought it and want to love it. gotta use it more. thanks for the video.
Two tips for it:
Hold 'Mode' for it to disable the motors and go into standby (this is helpful when you don't want to keep reconnecting to the Zhiyun app during short breaks in filming, or if you need to handle your phone without putting stress on the motors)
Triple tap 'mode' for selfie mode and will turn 180 degrees to record you with the rear camera for better resolution.
One negative is that while recording in the Zhiyun app it doesn't all 4K.
I love mine, but it definitely sticks out whenever I use it.
+Michael Bernardo thank you so much fot the tips. I have to try them when I get home.
how do you enter into "hold" mode?
I think Michael B. said that you should put your finger on the 'Mode' button and hold it to let it go to standby mode. There shouldn't be any hold button. Michael B. can clarify.
webbezzy correct. You hold the MODE button. There is no hold button.
No 4K in app? Dang...
it is absolutely worth it.
You can change the speed of the pan and joystick sensitivity with the app or the pc app with sub connection.
+kindlestone yes it have and app that can adjust the speed it's a little buggy for active tracking. I have not seen any updates
If you want smooth left and right pan shots set it to 5% on control from 25% to 5%
I wish they would do an update on the app to let you know what mode your in.
There are two apps to download, the ZY play and the Zhiyun Assistant. The assistant app is used to calibrate, update, and make adjustments to roll speed, pan speed and so on.
I've had mines for a couple of days now and I love it
I sent my 1st one back in June it had major software issues & the apps were a complete shit........
Just got confirmed last week that issues had been resolved & bought my new Q arrived yesterday and I just love it
I had to watch this again and Yes I bought one!!! You made me a believer.
Just don't touch the joystick.
have you ever come across a shoulder strap mount for the Smooth Q? This way we can hike Hands-Free. Thanks
Love the learn as you go review 👍🏽
I just brought it home! Got it at Best Buy for 139.00. It's still charging but I know I'm gonna love it. I will be using mine to add "Video Walkthru" to my Real Estate Photography business.
Can't wait!! Thanks for your video.
Thanks for posting this! I just got one these and trying to figure out the follow mode! This vid was a big help!
Thank you! The only tutorial that help me with that! You're awesome!!!

Hi. I need to use a S8 + and a lens on the gimbal. Have you tried a counterweight to help balance a setup like that?
Great down to earth video thanks. I have just got my Smooth Q. I am still learning with it of course. Only thing is I suddenly realized that I had gone against the very reason I have the Galaxy S8 ! I just bought one today....thanks for making the video. Very well done!
I got this baby now going to test it very soon
How do you keep it proper still, I cant keep the lock mode on cause it either moves with me
Can you use Bluetooth to change the direction of the camera?
Love mine. Used it on a trip to Hollywood. A lot of necks turning. Lol. But great footage.
+Irwin Hunter I have android and the track work o n both front and rear cameras bu it needs work. It freezes up
Really, here the track button doesn't show up on the screen. Can you make a video where you demonstrate on how it works?
Also support admitted that it 's not there "for the time being".
The track button doesn't show up on the OS app either.
What type of set up are you using to record your videos?
Just a buyer beware, I got 2 test runs out of this, and it never worked again when I picked it back up 8 months later. Recalibration doesn't help. HI..great video...could you please help me out as the pan function is not working for me, I have done the calibration and firmware update....but still pan left or right is not working...any suggestions please?
Hi there, i just got my Zhiyun Smooth Q but the panning and zooming function are not working. Got any ideas or did they send me a defective? thanks!
2019 feb the new price in ebay are $120 CAD with shipping now ,
Just got one for Christmas. It seems to tilt a lot to the side with my iPhone 6 (I take it out of the case). Should I keep trying to calibrating it? What setting can I put it on to make it pan fast
This was surprisingly helpful. Thanks!
i just got one today! I loved your video... keeping it real! I just liked and subbed.
I've had a Terrible time trying to figure mine out with the Galaxy Samsung S7. You make it look so darn easy.
Where are you located?
can I turn recording on, on the handle instead of remote button, or cellphone screen
I have the same problem.
But I don't understand what you did to make it work.
Thanks for demonstrating
do they offer a way to edit the video on the desktop/laptop or MacBook?
Great vid! I just bought the smooth q, and I love it!
Just got mine today about 3 hours ago, cant wait to wake up and try this with my s7 edge.
Hey There; I got the smooth Q last month. I use to do Steadicam work, so I wanted to try this. IMO it does a fairly good job. +David Torres i agree you can only tell if you are using the app and I don't so I find my self click to figure out the mode.
WOuld be nice if they put some kid of indicator in the screen of the app...
So far, I am frustrated with my Smooth Q.
+Tania Gail why?
Unable to successfully download firmware, calibrating the gimbal was challenging until I stumbled upon a YT video depicting the proper way to position the gimbal for calibration. +Kranti saini I'm getting use to mine. Don't use the software.

Great video! Keep up the good work
+anthony bradshaw thanks.
That is so kool brother man!
Love the video Sir. Is that a Hamilton watch ?
Man, I can't even get this thing to connect via Bluetooth on my S7 making the app worthless. Got a message to update via computer on their website which is all in Chinese. I heard the app sucks but I just need the limited app function to change pan speeds
voltron512 I have the same problem... Please just let me know if you find the way to fix that mess... Cheers
I have one and I love it, a little tricky at first but the more you use it the better it get, I only use the app to change
The pan and tilt speeds. All so good for GoPro. If your phone has image stabilization in it you should turn it off for a smoother shot
Someone mentioned that. I forgot to trying it. I have been trying to perfect my moments with it.
Hey! can someone help me ?
I love the image of the smartphone's shooting ! what kind of effect did he use ? :)
+M Max Hi I didn't use any effects.
I have the Osmo Mobile which I use for my videos but it was pricey back then. For $139, this is definitely a good buy and the results from your video show it works just as well, especially the stabilisation while running...
+CxA thanks. It's new to me. I wanted some feed back from those that have them and use them.
Got mine two days ago, loving it so far (using it with OP5). Wishing I had a video app that would record in Log Gamma, though.
nice review, I'm getting mine next week. so... how do you avoid those little sublte movements when standing, i saw some demo videos from people and some have those movements but some don't, is there something specific I have to do to avoid them?
+Gabriel Market I have been trying to avoid showing move but you can't fix the un and down movements while walking or standing
does the record button work for you when you press it and are using the phone camera?
Mine is coming from B & H tomorrow so thanks 4 the vid.
+Bruce Bruton let me know what you think. I'm still on the fence. I think the app needs work.
i was looking into ordering one! im going for it 👍
I tried to concentrate on the Smooth Q stuff but I could not get past the BigBall Vlogs Tee shirt...LOL! Fun reivew!
i have ordered one already , waiting for the package now
How hookup bluetooth
I felt corny using it when I went back home when I went to NYC last week....but the footage is so smooth it's hard to NOT use it. Active track I think is only for iOS.....and look up the vimbal c from feiyu......I would of possibly considered it but I got my smooth q from Best Buy for under $100. They price matched some sketchy site for 108 and I had a 20 dollar gift card so that's really really hard to beat.
+Maniak1027 damn that's a good deal. I saw the vimbal the grip is fatter right?
BigBallVlogs yup... I like the grip cause it looks more comfortable..... But I'm happy so far with my smooth q. I just wish it was a smoother transition from landscape to portrait but I have to admit my phone is huge (s8+). With that said Zhiyun opened up the door for inexpensive but quality gimbals. People are making mods for the rx100 and the Q but it blocks the screen.
BigBallVlogs I know, I'm just not sure I'm handy enough to make one. Maybe someone will sell it for the low lol
nice
Im excited ... great review. ive just ordered the smooth Q and will do a product review also when it arrives. Love the tips
thanks for a good video.......... this is a great product ... sadly slow software support for Android... hopefully Zhiyun is addressing this....... best way to learn is exactly as you have done in the video!!! go out and use it!.... off on a trip to Korea soon so we will be putting it through its paces!

How minute batery can stay? For streat recording
Ahmad Huzaimi 12 hours! I bought mine yesterday for 99 @bestbuy
Works just like the Phantom 3 gimbal it slowly turns in the direction you point it.
Cheers!
I didnt notice any heat. I use a Galaxy S8
What's the latest firmware? What's the difference between the zy play assistant and the zy play app?
+hawaii137 one updates the firmware and calibrated the other controls the settings of the gimbal
Thank you i just got mine👍👍👍👍
It's worth it. You can have it In your vehicle or travel bag and be ready to go for any event. Plus it was only $139. Great video!! Iwas having a really hard time getting it pair with my moto z play smartphone. You got me fguring out how to make it work.
Do you recomend any app for recording professional video with a external mic?
thnx take care
+Paulo R. Macedo Jr. I'm using the S8 and the Mic is very good so I have never tried any other.
Paulo R. Macedo Jr. I can't get my Moto z2 play to pair, how did you fix your problem
Was really helpful. Thankyou :)
can you attach lets say a led light or mic to the gimbal via arm attachments?
yes. it has a tripod hole in the bottom.
yeah
well i saw the bigger the accessory is more likely for it no to hold the weight.. so is small it might.. or you can use the bottom part of the handle it has a little hole for uou to attach something like a light or a stick..
Uce Supreme grab a gopro mounting accessories kit. I have a light facing forward and my cell facing me. Also the flip designates a transition in editing. All this is mounted via the tripod adaptor in the handel bottom. Good shooting!
I can't get my pan to work at all... so You're already ahead of me -_-
guys does your back motor heats up too? im so dissappointed.
The back motor is the one that controls roll. For it to be overworking and heating up I would suggest that you may not have the phone balanced in the gripper. It phone needs to stay level and balanced when the Smooth Q is powered off
Can I record a snapchat video via a button Zhiyun Smooth Q ??
Not a chance in hell it will work with the a6000 haha. Its max payload is 220 g, the a6000 is 344g WITHOUT lens.
I got it for $80 on eBay. I guess the price has gone down. I do travel with my Smooth Q. I just got a DSLR and plan to get a gimbal for it soon but don't plan to get rid of my old gimbal. Behind the scenes camera can be a smartphone. Behind the scenes will also have buttery smooth footage lol
Does anyone know how to use the Smooth Q in portrait mode? I don't want to make a horizontal video for IGTV.
I love mind I took mind on our cruise I go to the beach with it and I love it
Takes awhile to get familiar happy with mine. Zhiyun camera sucks great on filmic Pro
Yes I love it
i can not figure out how to use this thing at all. :_(
click 3 times the mode button to get into selfie mode so you won't need to use the secondary camera for vlogging
I have dji osmo+ and that smooth Q
its worth it bro
My smooth Q will eventually drift left or right even if you use the "lock mode".
+Luke C I didn't notice. Should it?
It shouldn't, and lock mode is very useful for hyperlapses. Quick tip - Press the button 3 times to go into selfie mode. You can also invert it by tilting the gimbal 90 degrees sideways twice
Smooth q is awesome! So easy 2 use!
Hi, does this work on a Galaxy S8 Plus?
+Ishfahan I don't have one. I think it will without the case. People have modified them to work with compact camera like the Rx100
it does work
You got it, takes some getting use to, I've got the Osmo mobile, cool devices.
+mtctookie25 I like this enough to be tempted to buy an osmo.
They are very smooth, like all DJI products!
Good video bro
