Hi, Steve! I like you more than all the other bloggers who run their own channels on the topic of creating video content. Don't stop! I will always watch you, even if you repeat something!
OK I’m just a few minutes in and this is already so great! I have an older Hohem gimbal that I’m not getting much use out of at the moment and loved the different angles
A top tripod tip for blustery conditions - As you well know, the heavier a tripod, the better. However for camping/bikepacking/hiking etc the heavier the tripod, the less likely you are to want to take it. So take the light tripod and hang a sling inside the legs and place some heavy stuff on it. Could be local rocks or just some of your other kit. If walking and using a camera backpack, hang backpack on tripod. This is the third bikepacking video I've seen this last week or with a camera hitting deck and break because of wind. Surprised the lens smashed. I had a 16-35mm f2.8 that was trashed by a river dunking, so I tested how good the lens coating was with a rock. Even whacking it quite hard resulted in zero scratches.
I do videos in the Cascade mountains of Washington state and here's my tips for bad weather filming: 1. Don't use the tripod that comes with the device. Those little tripods are only really any good for filming on a table. 2. Use a flexible armed (squid) tripod to wrap around branches, trees, rocks, etc. 3. Buy a light weight tripod with adjustable legs and (this is important) a hook under the center pole the camera will attach to. 4. Hang weight from that hook when you are filming in wind or on unstable surfaces Great video and I'll be using several of your techniques!
Great video. Always looking for tips on how to improve my solo videos with my phone. The weather in the UK can always be a challenge, both to the filming and to the pocket. Thanks for the video.
Ouch Steve this looked like an expensive nightmare to shoot but the gimbal does have some pretty cool features so looks like a decent product. Great tutorial keep up the good work
An advantage I see with the dedicated camera module, which allows using the native camera app for recording, is that you can use the full potential of the phone camera. When recording with the gimbal apps, at least on android, sometimes you cannot use all lenses, or only a limited subset of framerates and/or resolutions. E.g. the native phone app allows 4K 60, but when using the gimbal app for recording you might be limited to 4K 30 or FHD 60.
Another great video and you do help break it down so it’s easy to understand. That gimbal look s amazing and I think will have to upgrade from my DJI osmo 😊
Great video! I always wonder how the solo traveler shoot their videos beautifully...but it does take a lot of time just position the camera at different spots
I use a tripod taken from a laser device that is used on construction sites. much harder to be blown down by the wind and a gimbal can also be connected
Beautiful stuff. As I watch these videos, and from a hiker/walker perspective, it always seems as though you guys are in a rush to get somewhere. Not leisurely walking and enjoying the incredible scenery around you. Perhaps by design or necessity.
Hey @StBernardAcres Thanks so much for the kind words! The comment about my walking pace is definitely a fair one. There are actually a few reasons behind the speed in this video. Firstly, I generally tend to walk quite fast (my wife is always reminding me to slow down!). Secondly, I’ve tried deliberately walking slower in previous videos, but the pacing often feels off, especially when paired with cinematic music. I like to create a sense of purpose and energy, almost as if I’m on a mission, rather than a leisurely stroll. Lastly, it’s winter here in the UK, and daylight hours are incredibly short-it’s usually pitch black by 4 pm. This often means I’m rushing to capture all the shots I need before the light fades. Hope this gives a bit of insight! Thanks again for watching and for your thoughtful comment-it’s always appreciated. 😊
@@LearnOnlineVideo Thanks for the reply. Now I understand much better. And I can sympathize with your wife lol. My wife has much longer legs, and a longer stride. I am constantly having to remind her to slow down. I totally appreciate the hard work and effort you commit to these videos. I am trying to learn to shoot a more refined video, and venture into a short film. Your advice and knowledge has proven to be invaluable to me. Thanks again!
I have the Hohem m6 & use it a bit but the m7 looks like it’s on another level. My m6 looses tracking when I walk out of shot or turn my back to it & try & walk back into shot,I think the m7 remote with object tracking would be better for this.
Hey @jbsworkshop, I’m also a big fan of the M6, but the M7 is definitely a step up. The detachable remote with the preview screen makes a huge difference, especially when shooting solo-it’s a game changer. Plus, the subject tracking has been vastly improved. It now tracks not only humans but also animals! I was actually testing it on my dog this morning and it worked great! 😊
@ thanks for the feedback, looks like I might be investing in the m7 in the new year. I have just hit 1k subs & would like to try & bring better content as I grow,I have just invested in the rode wireless micro as my sound wasn’t the best & that mic is much better. Been following you for a while & always appreciate your view on things
Hi, Steve! Great review and filming tutorial ideas! Have you tried to film with the phone horizontally attached to this gimbal, when let say wireless mic receiver attached to it? Or may be mic receiver attached to phone from one side and lens or ND filter on the other side? Could the gimbal stand this and work correctly ?
Those were great pieces of advice. Question: although it may be cumbersome to carry added weight with you, how about carrying some added weight like a sandbag or maybe attach the tripod to your camera so the wind doesn’t knock it down?
Hey @Athandatu Yes, counterweights are a great idea and definitely the way forward. I've been making videos for almost two decades, and something like this has never happened before-but there’s a first time for everything! A counterweight could have easily avoided it. That said, it would definitely add to the payload when packing for shoots, but since winds that strong are pretty rare, I wouldn’t carry them very often. Also, a small counterweight attached to the bottom of the smartphone gimbal would have stopped it from blowing over. Really appreciate the idea, and thanks for watching! 😊
Hey @tonysutton6559 I have my equipment covered under business insurance, but I’ll be honest-I have serious trust issues with insurance companies! I’m pretty sure they’ll try to find a reason to wriggle out of paying. Crossing my fingers, hoping for the best, but definitely expecting the worst. 🤞📸
looks profesional, but is so time consuming and when you are in a rush, to reach the destination, all these arrangements of gimbal and camera takes a lot of time. And also there is a risk as happened to your lens, which is far from cheap. For some presentation look gorgeous but for a day trip is kind of complicated. Have a wonderful day.
I ❤ this vid🤔no, I 💕💕 all ur vids 🎉😂, but this one got me thinking 🤔, will be great for my new biz im about to embark on 🤗, this will be a great intro🤩,need to get myself that gear😁, thats for sharing 👊, great work THANKS. From: the CARIBBEAN
Steve, as always a very useful video on techniques. The Gimble looks excellent however I think many of your viewers will be wanting to ask, as a result of seeing the jerky movement when it pans and follows, is this is smooth. I noticed on your video that has the gimbal moves it's quite jerky, like it's moving by Numbers but missing a few out in between. Appreciate you're probably quite busy but I'd love your view if and when you get the time.
My Gopro took a tumble and broke the lens protector two days ago, I know those words. Now I wait for the replacement hopfully before the new year. Your fottage looks fine exept for the feet following that bounces betraying the selfie stick and for me "not a Pro by any means" the shots where you pan up or down as you come into shot are to much movement to fast. sometimes less is more but it is amazing what someone on their own can do these days with the tos/ tools now available. dose that gimbal handle a Gopro??
HI Steve! Just wondering if a Gimbal is necessary for normal travel video? I do have an Osmo 5 which I find it difficult to use, and I have a Pixel 8 phone. Any advice will be helpful. Super fan of your videos and tutorial
Nice, I love Dartmoor, where is that view to the lake in the final scene. Thoroughly enjoyed the tutorial and learning, thanks. This gimbal, will it support a action camera do t you think? Thanks again. 👏
Hey @Stone1108 Yes, this is an epic location, and it features in many of my TH-cam videos. I'm actually on top of Sheepstor in this video, overlooking Burrator Reservoir. It's definitely worth checking out if you're ever in the area-it's a relatively easy climb with great views. As for the Hohem M7, it’s primarily designed for smartphones but can support lightweight action cameras. However, it might be a bit overkill for an action camera, as it's designed with more advanced features for smartphones. If you’re using a GoPro or similar, it will work, but there are other gimbals that are more specialised for action cameras. Hope this helps, thanks, Steve
@@LearnOnlineVideo Thank you Steve, yes a big help. And i’ll definitely seek out that vantage point, I suspect there’s a good landscape shot or three there. I really like the look of the M7, had my eye on their M6 already, very tempting. Appreciate your thoughtful reply. I’ll be watching your channel more, I think i’d benefit, I am looking at how I can T myself up to have a YT in 2025, a lot to think about.
The Hohme M7 has an extension kit that comes with it, this serves as an additional handle and has a cold shoe mount built in (but I didn't show this in the video, sorry). You can find out more info via this link: tinyurl.com/LearnOnlineVideo Hope this helps.
It completely depends on your shooting style and what you’re planning to shoot. I actually have a video coming out next week all about choosing the best gimbal for you and your shooting style. It’s going to be incredibly useful for anyone looking to invest in a gimbal, so be sure not to miss it-stay tuned! 😊
I feel your pain about the lens. I was out doing wildlife at a reserve and droped my 24-70 f2.8. my heart dropped to the ground as the lens cap and lens hood both went flying. I was more lucky then you as it was a grass feild so the lens was ok but for 10 sec I was in dread at what I would find. I do Like the info that you give out to help make better videos.
I feel your pain, Rob-it sounds like you had a lucky escape! Dropping a lens is every photographer’s worst nightmare, but thankfully, the grass saved the day for you. Those few seconds of dread must have felt like a lifetime! On the plus side, we always learn our best lessons from mistakes, so fingers crossed this will never happen again. For me, counterweights are definitely the way forward on very windy days. Thanks for watching 😊
Bonjour, merci pour ces bonnes idées . J’espère pour toi que la casse n’est pas trop importante. Hello, thank you for these good ideas. I hope for you that the breakage is not too important.

I got the Hohem M7 gimbal, but always looking to spark imagination to get the shots, your videos are appreciated. We learn from each other
