Finally, another natural, long nail, regular polish, no fancy UV gels and whatnot girlie! I've been at this for 15 years, doing it all myself and it's rare to find natural nail folks without gel polish.
Just curious, why don't you like gel polish (I've only tried it once) ? Its supposed last longer. Is it just the difference in process you don't care for?
@Anna-wd8ox it's just not for me, and my regular polish manicure routine always lasts me 2+ weeks, no chips, just do a new manicure when the growth is too noticeable. I don't like UV lights and gel polish is harsh on the nails, plus I refuse to soak in acetone.
@@yoursocialmoth please could you tell us what you routine is? I spent years trying to maintain my natural nails with not a lot of success. I've been get hard gel for the past 10 months, with has burn great in term of my manicure lasting. However I'd prefer not using harsh chemicals and uv lamps
@@pistachioonut6683 Sure!
1. Remove nail polish and file with glass file to maintain almond shape (it truly is the strongest shape)
2. Push back and nip cuticles as needed
3. Wash hands briefly in cold water
4. Rub each nail down with rubbing alcohol to dehydrate the nail
5. Use a good qualilty base coat. Right now I'm using Sally Hansen Color Therapy Strengthening base coat. ( I've used some bad base coats in the past that have made my pretty strong nails flake off in layers, not cute) Let that dry for 1-2 mins
6. Apply one coat polish. Essie Expressies and OPI Infinite Shines are my favorites and they both do great job at lasting. Give it about 3 mins to dry.
7. Apply second coat, making sure to cap the free edge AND use something like an orange stick to remove ALL polish from the cuticle. Take it slow. Give it at least 5 mins to dry.
8a. Optional: I like to add a coat of Sally Hansen Good. Kind. Pure in Mystic Topaz to certain colors because it has a very cute finish and adds an extra layer of protection. I let that dry for 5 mins before:
8b. Apply top coat and cap free edge. I use Out The Door by Inm.
9. Don't touch ANYTHING for at least an hour! After I feel they're nice and ready, I will run them under some cold water and gently apply hand lotion. Continue life, but be gentle on your nails for a few hours (I can type, play on my phone, write, read, etc with no denting)
Hope this helps! I think a big factor is having healthy nails, so if your nails flake in layers, it can to hard to make polish last until that gets under control.
My nails just won't grow without gel, they are too soft 😭
Omg yes!!! I have long natural nails and do them at home once a week or so with regular polish. It really is one of my favorite hobbies. It's surprisingly hard to find content like this!!
Right?? I was surprised at how hard it was to find this kind of content too! Thanks for watching :)
It’s good to file your nails once a week even if you are just doing one light pass to seal off any micro tears you can’t see yet. It will prevent them from getting to the stage where you even notice there is a snag
ahh good idea!! I need to be better about that.
I started wearing mooncat nail polish around a year ago thanks to you! The most gorgeous polishes ever. Getting into the habit of painting my nails every week has helped me to completely stop picking/biting my nails.
yes mooncat is just the best! and that is so awesome 👏
A tip I learned recently that’s really been helping my nails/hands is using the cerave hydrating foaming oil cleanser as hand wash! Especially during the dry winter months it’s been great.
i LOVE doing a different polish on each hand, it's my favorite, and people always comment on it to say that they love it too
yessss I am such a fan!! definitely going to be doing it more often :)
11:29 I’d recommend getting some cuticle softener it will really help when getting rid of all that dead skin! Also makes pushing the cuticle back a lot more effective
thank you!! I got some 👀 haven't tried it yet but I'm excited
The speed with which I clicked!!! Added nail polish to my cozy hobbies because of you 🥰
That makes me so happy 🥰
I switched to a glass cuticle pusher a few months ago. I feel like they are more effective as well as gentler than the metal. Also lint free nail wipes will help prevent the cotton ball fuzzies.
great tips, thank you!! :)
Yesss, I've been waiting for this one!! 🥳
Hope you like it :) 💅
I'm so happy to find your channel..these are the vibes i'm looking for 😍😍😍😍
Ahhh! So happy to have you here 🥰
It makes me so happy to see how into nail care and polish you’ve become! 😊
I have the opposite journey of being big into nails for several years, but only in the last 1.5 years have I been really obsessed with plants. So I’m less dedicated to nails these days, but I still do try to maintain my nails when I can. It’s just not the priority it once was.
I used to magnetize every layer of polish, doing 3 layers usually. Now I will put 2 coats on unmagnetized, then with the third coat, I put a thicker layer on and magnetize that for a good minute. The thicker layer of polish will dissolve the layers below it, and you’ll pull more pigment than just the top layer. Giving it a minute to set helps hold a crisp line (if doing cat eye or similar). I then also use quick dry top coat (always for every mani) and magnetize that as well. I find this gets me close to what I used to achieve in a process twice as time consuming, haha. But if you have the patience, it’s also gorgeous to magnetize all the layers. To stretch magnetic polish further, you can put a base layer down of a crème polish that is either black or similar to the magnetic polish base, and then put one or two coats of the magnetic polish on top. This helps achieve opacity in one layer and then the magnetized layer on top is just giving the special effect. You won’t get the depth when doing this that you’d get building up the layers of magnetic polish, but it does save on time and conserves spendy polish. Another tip if you have a magnetic polish that has been sitting unused for a while, and you find that it’s not magnetizing easily, is to really shake the bottle to get all the magnetic pigment suspended in the base again. It’s heavy, being ferrous, and settles to the bottom of the bottle, and it can take a bit of doing to get it mixed up again. Many of us have polish shakers as it can really be hard to get the heavy pigments or large glitters off the bottle sides and bottom and back into the base.
I realize that you weren’t able to get 100% acetone the last time, but it really is necessary in my opinion. (I buy a gallon jug on amazon, myself but that’s just me). It is great for dehydrating your nail plate before applying any polish. Any natural oils or moisture on the nail plate, even if it’s not visible, will affect adhesion. This is what will lead to lifting (in addition to more obvious things such as flooding the cuticle with polish and not properly cleaning up the edges with a clean up brush and acetone). I always take a lint free pad and 100% acetone and scrub all my nails right before applying anything else. Then it’s important not to touch your face, or hair or anything during the polishing process. As you mentioned, it’s good to cap the free edge as this helps with strengthening the free edge and sealing the nail from water or oils getting under the polish. This is important to increase wear time, but oils are especially not your friend if you’re wearing a water based peel off base coat (like Holo Taco’s Peely Base). The best way to pop off your polish is to oil up with cuticle oil. This loosens the peel off layer (being water based) from the nail bed and pop right off. This can however also happen if you’re cooking and tossing vegetables in oil for roasting, for example, and this is not really when you want to be popping off peelies. 😂 Just speaking from experience, it’s not very appetizing. 😂
Ok, I can talk forever on this subject. But I really enjoyed your video and all the info in it is great for people new to polish and magnetics - it’s always a positive to get more people into boutique and indie polish - it’s such a fun thing to explore specialty finishes, like magnetics, thermals, solars, UV activated glow in the dark, not to mention all the wonderful pigments that you just don’t see in mainstream polish. 💅🏼 🎉 💖💫😂
Thank you so much for such a detailed comment!! Always love and value what you have to say when it comes to the nail world 😃 I don't know why I didn't consider that magnetizing the top layer would also pull the magnetize bits from below and magnetize them all. I am going to try that next time to speed up the process 👀 Alsooo I just found out about solar polishes the other day and I am shook! So cool lol! 🌞
Also side note your hair looks so cute up! A rare treat!
Thank you so much! It's nice to switch it up sometimes :)
@wildfern so true, especially for your new nail shape, it really suits you, i feel like you're one of these rare girlies who can actually rock the rounded square nail shape and it look good af 🤌🏻💋 perfection
You should consider doing a nail polish collection in the future! I’ve been looking for a nice cat eye/velvet topper and I’m so interested to see what types you use!
Those nail clips look like a god send!
Oh, how do you do velvet style? And how do you like the nail sampler?
@@Tina-wi7we I do the velvet style with a horseshoe shaped magnet, I will have to show it in a future vlog! and yes the nail clips are the best :) thanks for watching!
Omg, just yesterday I was looking through your old vlogs trying to find where you had mentioned what nail strengthener you use. This video came at the perfect time ❤
I just love watching literally any video you put out ❤
thank you 🥹
Love seeing other people's natural nail routines! Mooncat truly make the best polishes. Also, I ADORE your rings - especially the book one!
Thank you so much!! And yesss love Mooncat 🤩
loved this so much!!! fellow regular polish girly 🥰🥰🥰
Right now I can get two weeks but the tips show my nail as the polish wears off. Capping has really helped.
Love, love, love Mooncat polish!!!!!!! Thank you Fern for my new obsession!
So excited to find content about natural nails! I’ve been doing my own nails for years a collecting polish and love your routine! The silver necklace you wear at the end of the video is gorg can you link it?
Hey! So glad you enjoyed the vid. Here's links to the necklaces I'm wearing - www.analuisa.com/products/silver-chain-necklace-laura-bold-silver/

Yesssssssss I never clicked a video so quickly!!!!! Thank you!
That makes me so happy to hear! 😊
This video made me so very happy. You are already one of my favorite planty TH-camrs so the nail polish addiction is the 🍒 on top!!! Purple is my favorite color and I've been searching for new dish gloves. I screamed inside when saw your gloves!!! 😅 Thank youuu! PS I'm more than happy to use your affiliate link for the gloves!
That’s so sweet to hear! Thank you so much 💜
Yay! I've been waiting for your nail polish video! And you sure brought it! So fun! And also so thoughough! ❤💅 I was telling a person I work with about your nails (she gets hers done every month), and guess what.... she came to work this week with magnetized nail polish! So cool😎 ❤🎉
omg that is so cool hahah! magnetics are the best. thank you so much for watching, I'm really glad you enjoyed
Something that has helped me and seems excessive but open things with a tool (tweezers, scissors or a butterknife, etc). Things like cans and packages I use to open with portions of my nail! Hope this helps! Also, love MC! Awaiting a package this week of new polishes! 🖤🖤🖤
Yesss 100%!! I totally should have mentioned that in the video. I’ve heard the phrase “nails are jewels not tools” - words to live by lmao 💅 thanks for watching x
I've always been a nail girlie 😊❤ I'm happy to see this video 🎉
ugh i loveddd this video !! doing my nails while watching, thank you for your service 🫡💅🏼
So happy to see this video come up!! I’ve been waiting to see your nail care routine💖.
I make my own cuticle oil!!! I use jojoba oil with vitamin e. i put them in little brush pens for easy application!. also, if you love mooncat youre gonna LOVE holo taco. give them a look!
Yes good idea!! I‘ve recently started using a brush pen cuticle oil and it’s sooo convenient 🤌
I ordered a bunch of Mooncat magnetics because of you and I’m loving themmmmm! Currently wearing Forbidden Fruit 😊
Your nails always look so good. Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks!
The Galaxy Far Far Away is so far my favorite of the Star Wars collection of Mooncat. I am looking forward to trying the next one, which will be maybe tonight. With working it may be pushing it since I am in bed by 8:30am. I usually get up at 3:30am, sooooo. :)
Also, I love this video content perfect.
I got my nail license back in 1987. I worked in the salon as a Nail Tech for 2 years. I enjoyed it, but no $$$ in it. So, all that said I moved on to another career. Now I am back in love with painting my nails and taking care of them again and that is a big THANKS to you Fern ❤😊
Ahh that is so cool that you used to work as a nail tech :) and are you just an early riser or are you getting up at 3:30 for work? 👀
@ I am an early riser I am at the office by 6:30am. I need my me time before going in. 🧘🏻♀️
So happy you made this one!! I’ve been getting nails more too! And falling in love with moon cat thanks to you!
(Just FYI your pop in at around 18:37 is just a black screen!)
I really enjoyed this video. You are blessed to have beautiful nails. I love seeing all the different colours produced by Mooncat and the Starwars series looks stunning!!! I loved watching how you did the magnetic polishes, as they can be tricky. Look forward to seeing more nail colours in future video. 👍
your nails are so beautiful Fern! and your videos are always so relaxing :) I am so excited to add nail care to my self care/cozy routine, you inspired me!
YAY!!! Thank you Fern! I’ve been waiting for this video. You have turned me onto Mooncat, and I love their colors. You were so helpful with magnetizing polish. I think I’m ready to attempt it now. ❤️
Thanks for posting this, I use mooncat too and was only magnetizing the last coat of polish. I can't wait to change my polish now!
So glad you posted this! I've been so curious about the base and strengthener products you use. Every time I get my nails grown out to a cm, they break at the edge and there's no saving it, can't wait to try your routine and see if it works for me!
I just found your account and I’m so excited that I found it!! I just got into painting my nails this past year and love seeing this content. I’m so excited to explore your page and I saw your goodreads that we have similar ish styles, but I have to say, I LOVEEEE YOUR RINGS!!! I’m not sure if you’ve talked about where you get your rings in previous videos, but I’d love to support the businesses you get your rings from!! Especially that book one on your right hand is gorgeous 😊
Welcome!! So glad you found my channel! My rings are from www.clocksandcolours.com/collections/womens-rings but sadly I got mine several years ago and I don’t think they sell any of the specific styles I have anymore 😭
Yayyyy 🎉🎉🎉 I just got a moon cat thermal yesterday, can’t wait to try it!!
ahh yes I am obsessed with thermals right now. enjoy!
Thank you for this video! Bought a magnet and nail polish from ILNP but have been struggling. This video helped a lot! ❤
Yay! So glad it helped you out!
Fern, I can’t wait to watch this. I’ve been waiting with bated breath till you put this out. I don’t use moon cat but another brand. So I want to see what you do to maybe help me get them longer and stronger.
Hopefully this video is helpful for your nail journey! 🖤 thanks Lisa!
Hi fern! You got me hooked on mooncat polish! I love their brand. Your tips are so helpful! I always struggle with getting my nails to grow out and stay healthy. Also thanks for all the tips on the magnetic polish. I can never get the line sharp but i bet its because i dont magnetize the top coat. Thanks for your advice!
Would love to see the velvet! You definitely got me interested in mooncat--their colors are otherworldly. I just have such a hard time with classic polish dry time... the Dazzle Dry nail polish has spoiled me for most other brands since being able to go to the bathroom with yoga pants barely 5 minutes after painting my nails is game changing lol BUT I tried a mooncat mood polish for the first time and its just SO fun. I pair the MC polish with the Dazzle base and top and get 10-14 day wear time which I love
Ah yeah I totally feel that, there is nothing worse than denting it because it's taking forever to dry 😩 dazzle dry sounds awesome.
@ I simply cannot be trusted with drying nail polish…
Such a great alternative to the more toxic gel polishes-I’ve even gotten my friends addicted 😈
Thank you for this video! I don’t do my nails at all currently so at a minimum I’m going to pick up some strengthener as a start!
Your nails are amazing! I've never been able to grow mine out super long. Sometimes they're somewhat long but they always break or get a snag and then I pick at them. I want to try Mooncat so bad haha, and get a good nail routine down!
Your nails are gorgeous.
Thank you so much! 💖
a tip for magnetic polishes - you don’t have magnetize each layer, as long as you apply a thick final coat of the polish and magnetize that and the top coat, your mani should be perfect and less time consuming!
I will try it this way next time 🙌 thank you!
So helpful, thanks Fern❤
Thank you so much , dear Fern. My best friend and I are totally into nail polishes. Before seeíng your videos, I have never heard of Moooncat,,,,,now my best friends birthday is coming, so I will choose some smashing colors for her....an well yeah, also for me :)
ahh that is such a nice gift :) and yes hahah must grab a couple for yourself too 😉
i nodded my head so hard when you said that it was a week before christmas so it was very festive because the whole time i was thinking “this is giving candy caneeeees” 😂
Your nails look really good hope you're having an incredible night fern😂💅💯👍
Thank you for reminding me that nail strengthener exists 😂💖 I need to pick some up!! This turned out amazing queen!! 👌🌿
Well you just convinced me to try this polish!
Emery boards cause fissures in your nails and the water will soak into your nail to cause breakage, so its great your using a glass file!
Been looking forward to this video so much! 😊
I bought a glass file, but I can't stand the feeling and sound of it, it's so sad. I have no problem with the regular one, I don't know what it it, the glass just pains my sensors 😭
FERN I NEEDED THIS 😂
Love this video ❤ and the useful tips! Please show use thermals too 🙏 wish I could get mooncat nail polish in the UK! 😊
I’m in the UK & became obsessed with Mooncat polishes via Ferns channel. I buy them online from a UK stockist called Rainbow Connection. Hope that helps! ❤
You should try cirque colors if you lovr mooncat! Its anither small indie owned line based out of nyc i believe but they have a ton of finished like jellies, cremes, holos, etc. theyre my fave brand aside from mooncat
I have been eyeingggg their jellies 👀
Where are your glasses from!? They’re so cute and look so good on you!! 💚
Ah thank you! They're from Glasses USA a few years ago :)
YASSS 🙌🏽
Can’t wait to hear your report on a cuticle remover product.
I hadn’t heard about not washing your ands before nails. I always wash with dawn soap and a nail brush , followed by alcohol prep pad. To dry it. After both of these processes my nails are ready for the strengthener. I’m getting the ridge filling strengthener. I’ve got ridges and I’ve used a block(like they use on a salon on acrylic nails) to sand them down but I think I’m ruining my nails. So no more sanding them down.
No, no, no, please don't file the ridges down anymore, that's only thinning your nails out and damaging them! I have nail ridges too, it's normal. Just use a ridge filling base coat. I use the mooncat one, it's called Getting Even Nail Primer, and it leaves my nails looking very professional
I learnt alot thankyou ❤
Loved this! You could do your nails in videos every week and I would be happy haha
I loooove this video! I struggle with brittle nails (even with strengthener, genetics) but I developed an allergy to gel polish so have been looking for a healthier polish and routine. Also what kind of sorcery is that?! They peeled off in one go? Is it peel off polish?! Wow 😍😍
so glad this video is helpful! and no it's just a regular polish but soaking it for a couple of minutes makes it basically all remove at once haha!
Hi Fern you have such lovely nails, can I ask what you would do if one did break? Do you file the others down to match or would you repair it? Thanks 😊
If one breaks, I leave them. Buuuut usually if 2 break i will file them all down and then re-grow them.
I’ve been loving Mooncat polish thanks to you!
Also wear do you get your rings, they are stunning?!
thank you! www.clocksandcolours.com/collections/womens-rings
Love this!!! I didn’t know you had to also magnetize the top coat. One thing Mooncat could do better is providing directions. Unless I just missed it on the website…lol
I saw somebody on reddit use a book to hold their magnet over their nail! They just tucked the circle end into the book at whatever height they needed.
omg the hack of the century 👀
YAHOOOOO 💅🏻
Where do you get your rings and jewelry pleeeeeeassseee 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
www.clocksandcolours.com women’s rings section but they don’t sell the styles I have anymore 😭 I got them like 6 years ago!
I *just* discovered magnetic was a thing and became obsessed wtih nail stuff AND would love for you to do your wildest shades/formulations. hope there's some canadian pride clionadh in there! baeocystin and psilocin are making their way to me as I type this! So many questions! Thoughts on jellies? Do you like flakies? Are they harder to deal with in terms of applying/getting off
wait whaaat I didn't know clionadh was a Canadian company!! I need to order from them asap 👀 and I looove jellies and really want to add more to my collection. flakies are something I've really been loving in the past few months too! I used to struggle to remove them, but since I got the nail clips it's super easy to just soak em off. ok I am off to check out the clionadh website now 😂
Thanks for the video. It was fun to see what your nail routine is. Your hands always look so nice and lady like, even digging in moss or soil. How does it hold up to pon if you need to dig into it?
pon is definitely rough on them, I try to avoid it and use a spoon now lol
wow I did NOT realize you had to magnetize the top coat!
That cat eye is amazing looking. Hace you ever done the cross.
omggg pleaseeeeee what magnet did you use? I’ve heard not all magnets are strong enough so I’ve been avoiding buying one
just the magnet that comes free with the mooncat magnetic polishes :)
Your rings are so cute ! Where did you get them 💖
www.clocksandcolours.com/collections/womens-rings
Gorgeous!! How long does the magnetic effect last for you after magnetizing each layer for so long? I always wanted to get into magnetics but I heard they disperse a lot after a few days. Maybe that's user error
mine stay pretty sharp long-term :)
@@cozyplantlady11 Cool!! Thank you
yayyy thanks for all the tips! i started getting into nail polish from your vlogs. still haven't gotten around to getting a nail file or cuticle oil but those are next on my list. one day I'll try out mooncat... what's your favourite shade? 💚
i just thought of a way (literally lying in bed with insomnia) to make magnetizing from the top easier and more steady: tape the tail of the magnet to a book that's slightly thicker than your finger so that it sits over the edge, magnet side down, then place your finger under it when you want to magnetize.
@@Heidilisk omg this is so genius, thank you!! I don't know why I've never tried something like that 😆 and oh boy my list of mooncat faves has really been growing lol but some off the top of my head: fields of lavender, dragon scales, root of all evil, & house of hades! :)
@cozyplantlady11 hehe i thought of it while browsing mooncat and wishing i could try a magnetic but a) im lazy and b) i have unsteady hands. dragon scales is soo cool but i ended up narrowing it down to two to try out: forbidden fruit and root of all evil (love the names too, hello?)
Thanks for sharing!
Who else got inspired and started doing her nails?? 💅 🤍☝️
Fernnnn my bank account didn’t need another hobby 🤣 I bite my nails so bad I’ve done it since I was a kid but I feel like this would help.. I wanna buy some mooncat polish because😍
baahha I'm so sorry
hello! first of all, your nails are really pretty and the hole video is really inspiring!
i have a question tho... hope this isn't too much but i went to your instagram to search for more nail content and ended up finding that you used to have gel nails before. is there any reason why you stopped using them and do regular polish now?
i'm asking because i have always been the regular polish girl that does her own nail art, but recently my boyfriend got so excited with my nail art that he decided to give me a whole gel kit and i'm kinda scared to do the transition, so i'm asking everywhere i can for opinions and advice! thank you in advance ☺♥
hey! thank you and no worries :) I used to get my nails done professionally (probably the gel photos you saw) and just got kind of tired of going and of the expense, after that I tried doing polygel nails myself at home but it was really difficult so I gave up on that lol, and then eventually found mooncat and have been hooked on regular polish since. I have nothing against gel, I just don't know how to use it 😆 regular polish is a lot less intimidating to me. I hope if you try out the gel it goes really well for you 🫶 always fun to try something new :)
editing to say that I just remembered I had a brief stint where I was using gel polish myself at home (so maybe those were actually the photos you saw, I'm not sure) and I did find it hard to work with and it would also peel up but honestly it was probably user error because I hadn't done much research or anything.
Also, I would get a liquid cuticle remover. It makes it so much easier to push back and remove. But sounds like you know lol
You can actually push your finger through the middle of cotton balls and unroll them so you don’t have to use one per finger.
Whered you get all your rings 😍
www.clocksandcolours.com/collections/womens-rings
@cozyplantlady11 i had a feeling ! I love their jewelry, my husband has a beautiful set of rings and i just got a beautiful bracelet from there ! I love your style, thank you for responding ❤️
Love. Do you use mooncat's magnet or a stronger one?
Mooncat’s :)
Hey! I'm beginner to all the nail care and I have a question. Does this need a UV lamp? 😭
Hey! No, it doesn’t :)
Where are your rings from? I’ve tried looking but I can’t find anything similar
Fern I haven’t afk what color I’d strengthener you use. I
TH-cam said it was pink (I think) but there are a couple pinks. Which one? Please !
Mooncat Getting Even Nail Primer is the pink one.
Funny I’ve heard that square or a rounded square nail is stronger that filing down the sides weakens the sides. That’s what I heard a d I don’t like them pointy looking. 👀
If you round the edges they’re strong, but a sharp square tip will be prone to breakage on the corners!
I've never tried to shape my nails an almond shape but I want to! It seems like they need to be long to shape it? Not sure.
I've shaped them when they're pretty short too so it can be done :) as long as there is something to file lol!
I just wish mooncat had gel nail polish for people who like longer lasting nails. They seem to chip really fast
Your hair like this 🤌🏼
Oh a vlog to watch while I feed my Gecko’s!
enjoy :)!!
💅💖
Heyyy I'm from India I love watching your videos🌱🌿🪴🎀❤✨
