This repair cost me ONLY TEN DOLLARS! :) This video was perfect, thank you! This job was time consuming and straightforward. Only a couple minor differences for 2006 S40. I unscrewed a third screw on the lower dash piece on the underside near the fuel door button. Also, I had to unplug the footwell light at the bottom near pedals on that large under-dashboard piece. And I did not take my central air vent out because I used a low profile micro ratchet wrench for the very difficult to reach screws. I got the perfect set at my local hardware store for $2.99 only. It works great for the hardest to reach screws on the ignition switch. My selfie camera on my iPhone was helpful to see those screws by adjusting the exposure. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I did not replace the switch or key! I used a Torx 6 bit to unscrew the three small screws on the ignition switch. I took it apart and applied a $6.99 dielectric tune up grease to the electrical contacts inside and reassembled. Then, I put more of that grease on the plug contacts that attach to the two plugs on the backside of the switch. After I plugged in everything (including the radio plugs and waterfall controls plug) the car started on the first crank like normal.
2005 Volvo s40: This video saved me a ton of time and I didn't have to pay the dealership fees for service. I would have liked to see you getting out the last screw that holds the ignition in-that one was very difficult. I replaced the ignition switch and now I can get my key out of the ignition after turning off the car. Thanks very much!
S40 had "Key Error" so I followed your steps and found one of the wires wasn't plugged in. Bam! Fixed. Your English is better than my Danish but "Tak fordi du hjalp!"
Great video, got mine out this morning (with a couple of cuts and bruises). I found it handy to pull the stereo out, the vents were super hard to get out and the final screw on the top of the ignition barrel was a nightmare....only way I could do it was with a torx allen key and strong fingers. Thanks for helping loads of people Patrick.
If you can move the dash slightly you can use a long handle slim T25 to take both screws out of the rear of the switch. Make sure the steering wheel is down and out too. Vents can be left in if take the radio and CD player unit out. This video helped me a lot. Finally can start it again without jumping the starter. The same unit can also cause intermittent immobiliser issues.
Thanks Patrick. Got it done but those two screws behind the switch took me 90 minutes to remove and refasten. Otherwise easy peasy. I left the vents in as they were also being difficult. I used a mirror to get vision of the screw heads.
You are good! My starter clicks, then starts after making a weird electronic sound. We have a V50 Wagon with the Turbo. Good car until hit about 115,000. Then heater core, ECM from heater core leak, water pump, alternator, timing belt (mfg suggested) weird clanking sound from rear was bad calipers. Front axle ext but great motor. Did a block test with the blue liquid recently and no exhaust in the cooling system so thats a win!
This is a great video. I'm having a stupid issue where the car won't FIRE. Starter, battery already replaced but it won't fire for a while. Definitely going to try to source a new ignition switch and do this.
Great video Patrick, thanks a lot. I will do this operation on my c30 tomorrow. As of now, I can't start the car. Hopefully it's just the ignition lock and not the stearing-lock module.
This is the real deal. Had this problem, used the video and replaced my ignition switch. All you have to do to get the key out of the old switch is take the little screws out, the switch falls apart and the key comes outl.
Hi, my issue is it won't fire and have had starter replaced and now thinking it's the ignition barrel. If I was to buy a new barrel and just swap it around will I need to reprogram the new barrel to the key? Mine is 09 S40 with the non keyless start so the set up you had at the end of your video. Many thanks, Mark
I was wondering does the key need to be reprogrammed? I would hate to do all the work replacing it and the key needs to be programmed. Our ECM went and the keys had to be reprogrammed by Volvo dealer only.
@@patrickschnor2606 ok thanks Patrick. Out heater core went bad at about 112000 miles, spit hot coolant all over the ECM car would not start, windows not working etc. Had to replace heater core and ECM. Installed new water pump as well. Why Volvo put the ECM in so close proximity to the heater core is a mystery. I paid for all that work at Volvo dealer..about $3800...
I had an issue with my S40 where the I got "Key Error- Try Again." I had to remove the same ignition switch module, but was able to repair it and did not have to replace the unit.
Mike Klinker I have the same error. Please tell me how to fix this problem. My husband is going to replace the switch. If that’s not the problem, we would love the help.
One question, after you change ignition switch do you news to reprogram something ir do u chance and it works at is it? Pls awnser Me cuz į have same issue
I have a problem where I can't turn off my s40's electric power. It shows a yellow exclamation mark and airbag mark on the display and the radio and lights are on. It started with it barely starting and now it doesn't start at all. Could it be the ignition switch or maybe CEM?
patrick, what your car did wen the swish washed? because i have same car an everything is red inside, no dash light no radio light i can unlock the car is completely, i ready replace the battery but still the same
Patrick THIS WAS THE BEST VID On THE INET TO REMOVE THE IGNITION SWITCH..THANK YOU BRO!!!!!!.......your english was GREAt...butt Patrick...how did you actually remove the key ?
Does anyone else have a based a little different by the gear shift? I cannot get to the two screws because mine are not as easy or near the cigarette lighter.
The center air vent was no so easy, i plopped out the 2 vents to get accses to the 8 tabs holding it in place. Just turn them up and pull out the vents from the center out.
This repair cost me ONLY TEN DOLLARS! :)

You have a wonderfully reassuring manner. Great video. Do more.
Getting ready to do this to my wife's 07 S40, thanks, had no idea how to get to the switch. And by the way, your english is fine, again thank you.
Don't have this problem with mine. Hell, I don't even have a V50! But I still watched all this video. Top marks my man
Patrick you are a genius I have just done my ignition switch after watching your video thank you so much for all your help with your video
Were you able to use your original keys?

Got a few bruses also and the top screw was a hurdle for me also...
Same here in my ‘06 S40
Very mild mannered until the end "Fuck yeah!" love it 😂😂😂
And your video was amazing I we able to pull apart, switch and put back together with 0 problems. Thank you.
Thank you so much man! Works like new :) just don't forget to swap the chip ring in from your old one so your key is still recognized. Cheers!
Yikes. Ill be remembering to that now that i know!

Did you put a second hand lock in, if so did it need coding in
@@carwyndavies5869 No if its just the ignition switch they do not need coded in. Straight swap

Aaron Prakash try check brakefluid level and correct oil level. sensors are so sensitive. it can immobilize veichle
Patrick Schnor hey bud, I think it's the sensor but I topped off all the fluids anyways

How did it go? About to do the same procedure tomorrow. My immobilizer is refusing to start my car.
Great video. Made it a breeze. Thanks!
Thx... seems like i must make more of thees DIY guides 😎
EXCELLENT HELP Patrick...the BEST and really ONLY vid on the net ...but Patrick..how did you actually remove the key !!???!!???1
Great video, it was all I needed to replace my V50 ignition switch (it was turning the starter, but not the engine or fuel pump)
Was it hard to get that final T5 out towards the end? He showed the EZ one and the hard to get to one....
Does the ignition switch needs to be programmed or reprogrammed
Wish I'd seen this before pulling mine!

But isn't the key being retained b/c of the parking brake interlock?
BINGO !!!!...thats the magic ticket tht I need.....but those are like micro-torx screws ........H
Really great video, easy to follow, thankyou
Great video! Nothing wrong with your English
thanks mate. your video help a lot! all the best for you.

You don’t need to program the switch after installation at the dealer?

The key barrel should line up with car system automaticly, when you turn it on on first step
Excellent video. Thanks

Zemmel T. You probably fixed it by now but probably need to reset it by disconnecting the battery for 30 min or so and then reconnecting
What bad English, you speak it better than alot of people I know.
Was this a brand new replacement part or could a used one work without any dealership programming?
No it was a part from ebay
