    Honestly as a trans person (trans man) who hates jk rowling but loves Harry Potter, I'm definitely kinda sad that yall are abandoning the readalong but over all its just so nice to see people care so much and have so much integrity that they don't hesitate to cancel a project in the face of blatant bigotry. I feel like the books are worth a critical read for sure! If you read them knowing who JK is, you'll notice a lot of the way she views the world in the story and it's genuinely pretty interesting. I kind of just want them to read it because I love raw first impressions of Harry Potter from critically minded folks who can put my minor frustrations into words 😅

    • @whoizzat
      @whoizzat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I disagree. I think they should discontinue the readalong to stop give JK rowling more platform or attention. It's true that a lot of the HP fans are hung up on this due to the nostalgia. If they continue, people will still be talking bout her n potentially forget the problem at hand, being influenced by the stories and eventually desensitized to how problematic she is. She already earns enough by milking her series into several different collector editions that Potterheads ate up time and time again. Remember, it's one thing to have different viewpoints but to air it out when the world has terrible crisis and during a Pride month unapologetically? That is shitty.

    • @_gremlinboy
      @_gremlinboy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      @@whoizzat hm while an uncritical look at the books could be harmful, I think rereading the books with the context of who JK actually is would be really important and healing for people still stuck on that nostalgia. When she first started showing her terf colors I reread the books with her weird privileged liberal intolerance in mind, and it helped me feel a lot better because it showed me that her shittiness didn't come out of nowhere, it's evident throughout the books (the crappy government that is never fixed, the racism and slavery that is never recognized, james potter going from jockish bully to saint with zero insight into that development, the weasleys not actually being poor except to further harry and ron's character development, the shitty werewolves/hiv symbolism, spew being treated like a joke, snape's creepy obsession with lily being framed as touching and romantic, the setup for revolution and social change ending anticlimactically with "we kill the genocidal bad guy and the racists just go back to being regular racist", the list goes on and on) the point is, I think talking about JK is bad only when we try to forget who she is and what she believes. I'm not a fan of death of the author and think that causes the kind of harm you're afraid of here, but I really like when people read books with the author in mind to better understand the story. However, on second thought, maybe this reread should be done by someone who grew up with the books, because reading an entire series just to confirm that an author's crappy ideas ruined the series sounds exhausting. Regardless, I dont think talking about the books is inherently detrimental.

      I still love HP, but as of now I will no longer buy anything related to the series so JK doesn't get any penny from me. But truth be told, HP much like Star Wars is one of those things that you either get into while you're a kid or you won't really enjoy at all. It's one of those nostalgic situations where the memory of the thing is actually much better than the real thing, and I guess much like a lot of things from the 90s, it has not aged so well.

  • @MiuBlaze
    @MiuBlaze 4 ปีที่แล้ว +588

    Honestly, one part of Harry Potter that kind of bugged me when I was a small bean was when in Goblet of Fire, Hermione wanted to free all the house elves and everyone else was either, "but they don't want to be freed, they LIKE working for people" (which is all fine and good, but house elves don't get paid or have rights or much of anything, and the reason Hermione started her movement was because a particular house elf was being treated especially badly) or they thought she was crazy. And the actual house elves were INSULTED that she was trying to free them (as far as I remember, I read this a long time ago)
    And now, as a post-college bean, I have to ask, why did JK Rowling validate the same argument actual slave owners used?

    • @sarahtaylor4264
      @sarahtaylor4264 4 ปีที่แล้ว +139

      That is a valid point. My interpretation was that they saw Hermione as an outsider and obnoxious, self-righteous teenager with a cause. She raised the battle cry for them, not with them. She advocated for their freedom, but did not have an actual transition plan for once they got it. In the US, after the end of the Civil War a lot of former slaves became sharecroppers for their former owners on the same plantations they were slaves on. Most were varying degrees of illiterate, didn't have the education nor practical skills to get better work, and spent the majority of their lives, maybe even going back several generations, on the same land. Jim Crow and the law favored the white man, so fighting back or seeking justice could be extremely dangerous. The former slaves may have had their freedom now, but their actual situation hadn't really changed that much. Other than earning next to nothing and being trapped in a cycle of poverty for generations down the line. I can see how it seemed impossible to most people of color to achieve equality before the 1960s, when the mass movements supported by people from all segments of society we group into the Civil Rights Movement actually started to make progress. Obviously the elves deserved better and were treated terribly, but there was a sense of predictability and having basic needs (food, shelter, clothing, etc.) taken care of. I'm sure there were more like Dobby who believed the principle to be worth fighting for regardless of how impractical it seemed at the time. However, most probably thought that if the abuse wasn't too terrible, then it was better to stay out of trouble than take up a social cause they couldn't see the long-term success nor benefit of.
      I can appreciate how this part of the book challenges us to think about the aftermath of how our decisions affect people. It's great to have a just cause, but practical considerations and having an effective support system for vulnerable people are more important to its success. I wish Rowling hadn't dropped the plot thread entirely because it does look like Hermione is giving up and the elves don't have any qualms about their situation. It would have been neat to see Hermione walk away to reflect and then come back with a much humbler approach. She could have done a lot more to try to understand the elves and potentially worked with Dobby to inspire them.

    You know, I'll say this for Rowling - having read the essay, I understand where she's coming from and why she feels the way she does. She's old, she's got some trauma specifically related to "women's spaces" and men being in them when she had her guard down, and that makes her scared, because when you're scared (or angry or hateful or self-righteous or basically any negative emotion), you can find news that will reinforce that feeling and tell you you're right. That's what she did. Gender transition used to be a process with a lot more gatekeeping to it than you see today and that DOES open up the possibility of somebody "trying on" the identity to see if it fits - particularly in adolescence. We all do that sort of thing. You dress up in ideas and identities and you see what fits best, because you haven't figured yourself out. If you want to find news stories about people having tried that out and decided it wasn't for them you're not going to have that hard of a time, and it's only going to get easier as the identity becomes more mainstream. That's just how it works.
    So Jake there is nervous about people not like her in a very significant way moving into a space that she thinks of as a refuge and a critical element of her identity, and she can find news that indicates that maybe even a lot of these people aren't really sincere about it and they aren't right you know so you know maybe I'm scared of them. It's a feeling not too dissimilar from the attitude that leads most domestic abuse shelters to exclude male victims - the residents there have trauma that would be exacerbated by having a male around. Rowling has trauma, she grew up in a different time, she's found confirmation for herself that at least some trans people aren't really the gender they identify as and it turns out they made a mistake (which, ironically, is a lot less costly if you don't start changing out hormones and cutting off organs the way that transmedicalists would have you do), and that makes a space that she thought of as both safe and hers feel unsafe and invaded. I don't hate that - I have sympathy for it.
    See, there was something like this that happened not so long ago in a different community - Gamergate. A mostly cis, mostly male culture that had constructed an identity out of this little space of interest saw people that they didn't recognize trying to become a part of it and it threatened their sense of safety and identity. A lot of them felt like they were having their safe space taken away from them and all that mess resulted. It's a comprehensible reaction, and it's one that ought to be regarded with sympathy, albeit without tolerance for exclusionary action. In that regard, J.K. lands somewhere between Adam Baldwin and a bunch of guys in fedoras writing thinkpieces. She's not the way she is because of hate - she is the way she is because of fear, and my personal reflex in that case is to try to help her grow beyond that fear, which is......not the way Twitter works, to say the least. Twitter offers you exactly enough space to express one emotion at a time if you're lucky, and the easiest one to do is hate or anger. Nuance ain't exactly work all good with a character limit.
    I'd like to have a conversation with her, maybe get her to watch a few Contrapoints videos, and give her the chance to make herself better before condemning her. Everybody has blind spots and nobody understands every person they meet - there's always more to learn and more ways to become a better person. I say give the old lady a chance. Before we start throwing out her books and shaming/shunning her, try showing her some alternative perspectives that she may not have encountered and see where it goes. Maybe she comes out the other end as a reprehensible hate monster, but I'm trying hard these days to give people the chance to grow beyond their initial reaction to things that are foreign to them before I get out the bullwhip.

    • @XuntosIzor
      @XuntosIzor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I feel like the collective dogpile of hate she's getting will actually make her and people who agree with her double down and be less receptive to changing their minds. I wish people would let go of cancel culture and take a moment before giving in to anger and just being reactionary. That often just looks like hate to people who's minds we want to change for the better. No one's mind is changed in an argument in my experience; they get defensive instinctually and are less receptive to education. The only times I've changed the minds of other or have had my mind changed were through compassion and empathy.

    • @strawb2811
      @strawb2811 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think women who have experienced DV, assault, etc. Need a tad more compassion. The whole system needs an overhaul to protect and include trans and non-binary gender identities while helping women feel safe. Personally I would never use a non-binary communal toilet, for example, but I would be happy to see them and for them to be more widespread. Women aren't necessarily coming solely from a place of privilege when they fear men entering their safe spaces. I'm someone who fears men using systems/rules designed to protect various gender identities to harass women. It's a legitimate concern and there needs to be processes in place to keep women (trans, cis or people perceived as female) safe. However TERFs take a horrible and transphobic approach which targets the wrong people. My own suggestion is providing individual toilets alongside communal bathrooms which could all be gender neutral. Another possibility is bathroom attendants in communal toilets to ensure safety. When it comes to things like DV refuges the situation is more complex and probably requires multiple types of refuge men, women and gender neutral. Also possibly specialized LGBTQIA+ refuges.
      I hope people like JKR see the error of their ways but we should also understand that TERFs who have experienced male violence are traumatised and may have some legitimate concerns amongst their hatred.

    "If she were published today nobody would care about her or publish her... everyone would cancel her."
    And THAT'S on accidentally pointing out how dangerous cancel culture is. Because like it or not, think it's deserved or not, the HP series has done more for youth reading than pretty much anything in history. And you just pointed out that something EXTREMELY problematic, but also completely unrelated, could have prevented this series from changing the world in a positive way (which it incontrovertibly did).

    • @zetaforever4953
      @zetaforever4953 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      But unrelated things matter. They always have, long before cancel culture. The only difference is whether you think that unrelated thing is important or not. People lost teaching jobs for being homosexual (unrelated). Even now, you wouldn't want your kids to be reading comics illustrated by a sexual abuser (unrelated, unless the comics are about sex or abuse). And many companies won't hire someone known to be racist (also unrelated unless the job involves interracial relations). Cancel culture has always existed. Just what we cancel people for has changed from time to time. And it probably will again.

      percy jackson is 100% way more superior in terms of how inclusive and non apologetic it is for its diverse characters and rick, as a person, seems to def be better than jkr as well, but it's debatable which series is better in terms of story, world, etc. rick makes it so that his more diverse characters are seen as totally normal people who belong just as anyone else and treated equally the same with other white/cishet characters like percy and magnus (i believe) so i think the quality of the stories/plot of both hp and pjo+hoo+all the other series can be argued against while still maintaining that the love and acceptance for poc/non-cishet characters in rick's series is way better to how jkr treats HER poc/non-cishet characters (which u need a microscope to find anyway). that's just my opinion, i haven't been able to read all of rick's new books yet but this is based on what i know, i like both series and if i'm wrong abt anything here please tell me so i can correct myself 🥺 i'm open to learning new info about this

    • @SchulzEricT
      @SchulzEricT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think when I come up against something like this, there's 2 important questions to ask:
      1 - Does your support actually benefit the problematic person?
      and
      2 - Does the work still bring you joy?
      Because if you've already bought the books, then throwing them out is a purely symbolic gesture; she already got your money. Like, do it if you want, but I don't think anybody should feel *compelled* to throw them out.
      But sometimes it's just impossible to separate the art from the artist; if reading the books just frustrates you because everything even remotely problematic-adjacent reminds you of how shitty JKR is, then yeah, why keep the books if they don't make you happy?
      I think those are really the two important questions to address when something like this happens.

    I think the HP series grew in so many ways after JK was done with it. Liked all the supportive head cannons and the basically whole novels written by others that took place in that universe. Before all of JK's tweets I used to read all the lgbtq head cannons and praise JK because she created a world where everyone was valid and loved and drank butterbeer even if this wasn't their situation in real life. But now I think that she's tainted a safe place for many people. We don't stan. All the actor's that came out and spoke against her were part of the HP world. JK created it, sure. She technically doesn't exist there tho. It's like Ron Weasley putting a hand on your shoulder and telling you that you're valid and loved as a gust of wind (JK Rowling) blows by and tries to contradict that. We don't listen to it's opinions, it's wind. She doesn't exist here. But it's like the founders of Hogwarts. We're no longer calling people mudbloods. People realized this was wrong and stopped doing it.
    Who wrote the books? Dobby, apparently.
    Moving on, trans ppl are VALID, JK Rowling is a piece of SH*T, and I will continue to not read her books and hope others do the same. Drain that b*tch's bank account. I hope that she didn't taint much of the safe place she had created before this whole thing. Though even now, we're all starting to see the cracks in the foundation of Hogwarts
    . I'll be in the room of requirement, setting up for the Everyone is Valid party.

    Honestly, it's kind of a letdown watching other people's videos since I began watching Cindy's. She just engages with her audience so well and has such a fun vibe, and I love that she actually goes through her comments and is always so cool

    Watching Cindy makes me feel a bit better, giving me a good laugh and a smile that is real. Jk used to be my favorite author and with what she has done, I start to have some doubts about her.

    Finally someone who thought the HP series was dry as fuck even before JK Rowlings problematic beliefs came to light.
