    I appreciate you taking the time to film this install. I watched it a few times before taking on the job. You completed much faster than I did but I took my time and didn't break anything. What a pain. The parts going back together are like a jigsaw. If you do have a number of miles on your AT you might as well do the air filter changes as well. It really helped for me to download the Honda instructions and I referenced them quite a bit especially for the route the wires are supposed to go. Shame on Honda for not including this. Again, thanks for. the video!

      Randi,
      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I am glad you liked the video and mostly I am glad to help others which is what this channel is all about. Thank you again for the kind words, I hope you have a blessed week and I hope you have an awesome Thanksgiving. Thanks again.

    Your video is a saving grace. Unbelievably annoying how Honda does things on this vintage. I hear the newer models are easier. I didn’t realize my accessory outlet didn’t come with the full harness. Just the first pig tail, so after tearing everything apart, I ended up just tying it in directly to the battery. Your video was great though so thanks.

      Oh man, thank you so very much, when I was making this video I had no idea how many people would end up watching it hahha, I would have picked out a better outfit hahhaha, Thanks again and have a blessed week. Enjoy your AT, they are awesome bikes.

    Thanks, Dale. I found your video because I'm going to be tearing it apart to change the fuse. WHAT A BUMMER! I'm considering buying a panel mounted fuse holder, installing it in one of the available blank button spots, and running a pair of wires with blade ends into the fuse holder of the Honda in-line set up.

Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, it is greatly appreciated and I hope you have a blessed week my friend.

    Instead, just take off the left side fairing painted piece and install a socket, then wire it back to the battery or one of our Eastern Beaver fuse panels. Takes only minutes and you have a high capacity socket with an accessible fuse. Plus, our fuse panels allow you to wire in all your accessories with room for future stuff too.

    OMG! That was a crazy amount of work to add a 12 v socket. Basically you just have to remove everything except the engine. Didn't start out great - stripped over torqued battery cover hex head just for fun! Agree with everyone else - really that could't have been included? I would have pair the extra $25 it would have cost them to do it - after this, I would have pair an extra $100. On the bright side, I learned alot about the bike by having to take so much of it apart. Good video - and along with the instructions by Honda, it was doable, but not fun. Hope that fuse never blows. Thanks for the video and happy trails!

      + HDS, I would be scared also to use it. Is that 12v socket the genuine Honda Acc Part or aftermarket ?
      I personally would have made sure the fuse was at least 15A to make it more multipurpose,
      .., After watching this helpful vid , I also now realise maybe it is better to think through another way to rewire that fuse (ie; by re-routing the fuse to a different location that made access to the fuse much simpler in the future) .., as I'd forever be cursing myself if ever I had to pull the bike apart again just to simply check a fuse ;) .
      Thank you for making this (and other) vids HDS , I felt like I was there passing you the tools :)

      Oh man, sorry for the delay, I have been out on a hunting and camping trip for two weeks now so sorry for the delay. Yes, i do believe the only wya you will be able to get to the fuse, it to go all the wya through this process, it is hidden in the behind the headlights with all the other wiring, I am not sure why they made it like that but that is how it wired. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment and sorry for the delay.

    Man I wish my seat on both the bikes came off that easy! The camera view @ 2:44 is fantastic. The micro clips...my very first experience with one I tried and tried to pull it out with out pressing in on the center. Then I used an punch to press it in but ended up shoving the center all the way through and lost it. :)

      heheh, make no mistake, it took me a minutes to figure it out and I have some on order now. hehehe. Thank you sir, I hope my narrative I added in the video that says push it in until it clicks helps people get theirs to come out with out messing some up, they sale them in bags of 10 so its a $21.50 mistake with out shipping cost. hehehe. +Heartland Dual Sport just a tip I have from dealing with those clips on a daily basis. If you have the cheepo pocket screw driver with a magnetic back tip. it is the perfect length and size to push them in without going to far.

    Nice video. Having looked at the long lengthly process to be able to change a fuse, I have chosen to go back to basics, run an independent 15A twin core insulated wiring back to the battery and installed a fuse inside the battery cover. 2 minutes to change a blown fuse, and minimal chance of an electrical fire / short taking place. Zip tied the wiring to the existing wiring, loom and man frame.

    Thanks for the video! I had the same concerns you had about the fuse sitting behind the fairing. Turned out to be right - my fuse blew and since I had put on an aftermarket skid plate and crash bars I additionally had to take those off to get to the fuse. Ended up installing the fuse box from Eastern Beaver and routing the 12V power outlet there. Also connected my TomTom and charging cable to the second box.

    • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man, I am sorry, to be honest, I have not used mine much, I put on the aftermarket one on my bars, and it has the cigarette lighter type plug as well as two usb plugs, so knowing how much trouble it was to install this gem, I don't use it for that fear of the fuse blowing problem. Sorry yours went out but it sounds like you fixed yours like I did as well. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week my friend.

      Got the center stand, heated grips, and 12v installed from 9am till 3pm so this was an all day event at our local honda dealer. looking on your past videos i noticed you also went with touratech panniers i installed a top case first mainly to store my helmet and gloves so im not walking around with them as they are mic and have cameras installed. once i got that installed i was going to do acrider crash bars and skid plat but decided to go with all touratech instead i was very impressed with the stainless rack and why not just keep everything the same i don't think this bike is going to see heavy action off road. I am more about just some gravel roads on occasion but more to pack up some gear and take a few trips when Im not working. my AT is a 2017 DCT which i think is really great well made bike i picked it up for 10,500 new so i couldn't say no to that and is like going into the future comparing to my KLR. i plan to watching more of your videos as i like seeing what your putting together for your channel. Thanks again keep up the good work!

    Hi Dale, If only I had seen your video before dismounting all of the front of my new Africa Twin . It is very complicated on this Honda compared to my previous FZ09 .. For the price of the bike, they could have put the central stand and 12v power accessory .. I watch your videos from France, and I liked and subscribed to Your channel. .
    Thank you for all these explanations on this bike ✌.

    Man, thanks so much for putting this video up! ColoradoDualSport is coming over tomorrow so I can install his heated grips. He already has that port, but I've been looking all over trying to figure out what I need to do to tap power and this is the first thing I've found to help clear that up. Looks like my choices are pulling the crash bars and plastic to get to the back of that port and tap the power there, or doing all that plus pulling the gas tank to hook straight into the battery and run the wire back to the handlebars. Sound right to you? Also to answer your question Honda isn't in the business of selling motorcycles, they're in the business of selling dealerships, and dealers don't want that port installed from the factory, they want to do it themselves so the shop can be a profit center. Thanks again.

    • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your very welcome, I hope it helps, I will say this, when putting the windscreen back on, be very careful, those little rubber screws fall out easy, and to get them out of that hole you have to do this whole process over or order a new one hehehe.( Don't ask my how I know, heheh.)
      The Heated grips,, if they are Honda, I believe there is a place to plug into like this accessory port had, and it will show on his dash when he turns them on or off and what not, if they are the Honda heated grips, if they are not Honda, you are correct, you could tap in where ever you want and it wont matter, I have not put them on mine, but that is what i understand about them.
      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment my friend and I hope you two have a blessed weekend. Keep put he fun videos on your side as well.

    Thanks for the clear video, it made me decide not to consider the Honda accessory socket and buy a 12v/USB charger that I'll mount to the handlebars instead hehe Seriously Honda really did a poor job on this part...I can't believe at somepoint someone at the factory didn't raise their hand and say, hey, couldn't we make parts more easily accessible? I get that they wanted to put the wait of the battery low for mass centralization, but it's almost as if they made it intentional so the dealers can charge more on maintenance (like simple air filter replacement).

      Another thing worth noting on the aftermarket plug in like we just previously discussed, If you are running an aftermarket tool to air your tires up, most likely that will kick the fuse on the honda factory plug, and as you know, that is hidden behind the dash, so it is a mess to actually get to it, and if you are broke down and just fixed a tire, you will now not have power for your air pump, so a factory one in my mind is well worth it to have and it is not only much cheaper to do, easier to install. I ran one because of this known low amp in line fuse issue for just that reason, along with all my camera equipment trying to keep stuff charges on the go.

      Not really, it is not really long enough to wrap it around to the inside, and or let it hang out the bottom. I wish there was, I don't know that you would need to replace the fuse too often but if and when you to it is a bear to get to it.

I don't know if you have seen the Eklipes charger install that I have done or not but if you don't want to fool with the stock Honda one, I highly reckoned it as well. and it gives you more options to charge stuff, I have installed both since I need a charger for the phone and GPS and GoPor stuff so it works great especially if you need more ports.

    Question, in your side note are you warning us not to use an air pump in the power socket since it has an 7.5 amp? If so, is the reason because the 7.5amp cannot handle the load thus blowing up?

    • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is what I am getting at, a lot of the air pumps will pull more amps than the fuse will handle, I am pretty sure Honda even says don't use a pump, it will pull more than it can handle thus blowing the fuse, then you have to take all this nonsense back off to get to the hidden fuse, I put an after market one of with a heavier load rating for the air pump. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week.

      Anytime my friend, I chose the Eklipse, it has a cigarette adapter and the usb all in one, and fits nicely and is wired for heavy use. amzn.to/2HmVsyf
      That is the link to this one, I have used it on my DRZ and this Bike both have worked flawlessly and is cheap enough to make it worth the while, They also make a deal to jump start your bike if your battery dies. so that is another perk to this system. • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh you are very welcome my friend, I enjoy doing the videos, I am running behind and have not posted in any in about a month, changed jobs and messing my free time up hehehe. I mean it straight to the battery, I have a video on it as well, it is called the EKlipse Power Port, it is made by Eklipse, the one thing I really like about that set up, is if your buddy has one as well you can jump your bike from it if its dead, and if your buddy doesn't have one, you can use the alligator clips and get a jump from a car or whatever with out having to take your bike apart to get to the battery, this is the link to the one I use. amzn.to/2w4M7JE
      amzn.to/2w3RZmL
      Another advantage of this is if you use a battery tender in the winter or whatever, it has the same plug and you can plug straight into it and you don't need to wire one of those into your battery either, so it cuts down on the amount of wires going to your battery.
      The top link, has a on off switch, the good thing there is if you are at camp and just need a quick charge to your phone or something, you can turn the power charger on by the switch charge whatever with out having to put your key in your bike. I charge a ton of electronics, so having access to charge with out the key on in the bike is huge perk for me, not trying to sale you something, but it is definitely worth checkin out and looking into it if you have the extra 25 bucks and it is 1/3 of the cost of the factory one.

    they want to advertise the bike cheaper than the tiger, by the time you add all of the extras it cost you more

    • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could not agree with you more, but some of this stuff, should have been done at the factory level, but yes sir, that is what I have decided too and since it cost basically the same money as the Tiger XCX, the tiger may well me a better buy for some, you could always say the Honda has a bigger engine, but the XCX and the AT are basically the same HP, so in the long run that 998 engine may be costing you more in insurance hehehe. I do Love my AT and I will be happy when I get all my mods I want done to it done, But yes sir, the XCX is a great buy considering it cost the same and comes with a lot of protection from the factory. Thank you so much for watching, subbing and commenting, I appreciate you and I hope you have a blessed weekend my friend. More to come, so thanks again for subbing us as well.

      Can you please share the other easier way to install 12V outlet? Also, any suggestions on a battery tender connector installation? Would you just go straight to the battery with an SAE connector or something else?

    • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the link to an install of the Cobra Charger and it has the plug that will work for the battery tender battery charger all in one connection, so you only have to connect the black and red wires to the appropriate post on your battery and you essentially get a charger port and lace to plug in the battery tender all in one.

    Between this ridiculous missing necessity, and that high quality set of tools that came in the tool compartment, it's sad to see the bean counters have taken over at honda. My '82 XL250 came with real tools that I still use today in my tool roll for the africa twin, since all it had was one allen wrench and one very retarted screw driver. Unbelievable..

      I so agree with what you are saying, I thought it was ridiculous that it didnt come from the factory with it. The Tiger has all the items I mentioned in my other video, and was at the time, the same price. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week

      Yes sir, i think you may be onto something. Either way, I got mine installed it take a little while, But cld I have it installed. I will be posting another video its rough;y 3 mondays out and it will be an easier install and a great 12 volt adapter, it is not Honda, but works great and you can use it with your key off as well. Thanks for watching and commenting and I hope you have a blessed week my friend.

      Thank you very much, Not sure, why they didn't include it, especially since it is pre wired for it, Does not make sense to me at all. But it does go together really quickly. so it is nice to get it installed. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate you and I hope you have a blessed week.

    This should have been done by Honda.What a pain to do.Be patient removing the side covers as they do take practice making sure you dont break some of the plastic bits.Once you have done this a few times you begin to know how much force to use.Note you need to do most this to clean or replace the airfilters.Again honda has not made it easy.My Yamaha Tenere 660 was a million times easier to service and do stuff like this.Shame on you Honda, shame.

    • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes sir, I so agree, not a good design especially considering the air filter is something that needs to be checked daily regularly. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week.

      It is unusual for Honda to overlook or bypass something like that. I used to be a Honda Power Products Dealer and I know their usual thinking. They ran out of twins last fall / winter because of the earthquake. I have had numerous Hondas and hopefully a twin in about 2 months.
      But I might invent a dc outlet panel somewhere up front with maybe 4 outlets wired to the battery through a relay and maybe a 20 amp fuse.
