I think red eared sliders are probably one of the most mistreated turtles because, as you pointed out, people get them without having a clue how big they get or how to care for them. A few years ago I decided to get a turtle, I researched for a couple months and decided on a southern painted. They stay pretty small, he is 2 years old now and about 5 inches. Was a great choice, he is happy and healthy and a lot of fun, very interactive and will take food from my fingers. Thankful there are folks like you to care for these animals.

Southern Painted and the various musk/mud turtles are really the only US species easily maintained indoors. The majority of aquatic turtles grow too large & require immense aquariums with powerful filtration. They’re best suited for keeping in outdoor pond-type situations.

I once found a snapper on the road, now, this girl was 3 feet in diameter, and in a really bad area. I caught her, and put her in my trunk, and took her home.
I then cleaned her up a bit, took photos, measured, and weighed her. She weighed 58 lbs.
Then I took her to a area where I know she would be much safer, and get lots of food, and sun, and water. I got her to the shore, and backed away. She sat there for about 5 minutes, then she turned around facing me, and backed into the water slowly, and watched me watching her. I know she was happy.

My question is what will the fate be for all those Red Eared sliders; is GTS fostering them until adoption? If both sexes are housed together how are they kept from reproducing?
      _So many questions…_ 🤔

Our red eared slider is over 20 years old that we know of, she could easily be older. We were given her when her family had to move and were at the time homeless. They had no idea how old she was as they had been given her by another person. Again as you said she was in a 20 gallon tank. We tryed the outside kiddie pool with big rocks but the dogs kept squishing the fence to drink out of it. So we got a 120 gal. aquarium with a homemade huge turtle dock above and she stays in that pretty happily. She also requires a laarge canister type filter! I don't know about other turtles but redears seem to poop alot and alge up the water. The big filter keeps her tank much clearer and cleaner.

We live in Arizona and my niece took a tiny sulcata whose clutch was found by dogs( not hers) in the desert, I came to visit shortly after and fell in love, as in head over heels and her name is Tomi Tiptoe. Her sister tortoise went to another home but they could not keep her and my niece then took in Tikki Charlie. They live in the back yard enclosure and she grows and buys food for them. They are about 4 years old and about 30 plus pounds and bring light and joy to life. They are healthy but as she read up on sulcata diet and fed tomi correctly from the start and her shell is perfect. Tikki has some pyramiding but not too bad and thats how we can tell them apart. Tomi wants little to do with humans (unless food is involved) Tikki is a little lover which is opposite what you would think but what a wonderful experience it has been!

Do you adopt the sliders out? My daughter has a backyard koi pond and 1 male red eared slider she's had for about 8 years. His name is Hermes, and he's lonely. He does the mating arm flap to one particular fish, but he'd really like a friend

That’s how Red Eared Sliders became invasive in nearly every state. I’m somewhat guilty, as a kid I released at least half a dozen in the large pond within the Japanese Garden in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. That was many years ago and whenever I visit I wonder which of those giants spent the first year or so in a tank on my bedroom windowsill. At least they are contained in a man-made system and being well taken care of.

I knew someone who once surrendered a batch of turtles to either “Popcorn Park” or “Turtleback Zoo” (whichever was completed in the early 2000’s) before he passed away. The previous owner lived in North Jersey and “Otis” looks/acts amazingly like one of his 2 male Easterns.

Great way to start Sunday morning as always. I have a couple of recommendations. I very recently bought 3 yellow bellied slider hatchlings from a well established FL retailer. Have always had very healthy animals. Noticed one has subtle red ear markings. All three have the dark spots on the underside of the marginal scutes. All three have multiple black spots across the plastron. Pretty sure I have some intergrades but sure would enjoy a video that looks at this differentiation in hatchlings-- similar to your video differentiating eastern and western hermans. Second, it would be useful to produce a longer form video on how to build a relatively inexpensive inground or livestock tank pond. Maybe that type of instructional video would help some to enjoy turtles while reducing the risk of rehoming later. Thanks again for all you guys do.

Can any of those sliders be released into the wild? Any cautions with doing so?

Can the healthy full grown animals be rehomed to the wild? Do you adopt them out for new owners? Do you share them with weather appropriate rescues?

Are there any programs to take red eared sliders out of the wild? They are seen in many ponds in the North East because people dumped them after they get to big?

On a fishing trip with my father to the Everglades, I netted a little red ear. We took him him home and named him Crawley. When he grew so large he began routinely escaping his enclosure, we returned him to the wild. Too bad so many of the turtles your rescued didn't have that option.

Otis is always the highlight of any video, but it’s a close second to watch you with a bird on your head😂
This might be a weird question but can turtles be spayed or neutered?
