@Golfer-rn7lh You have to recognise the difference between 'internet' and 'web'.
The internet was a peace dividend after the collapse of the USSR, which came about when the technology of DARPANET (US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) and JANET (European Joint Academic Network) was opened up to the public and spread like wildfire. An idea whose time had come. Also worth a mention is the French Minitel system, SCADA, etc.
The internet is primarily the hardware and the communication protocol (TCPIP) that runs on it. Built on top of that are all the things we know as users. Early things such as email (POP, SMTP, IMAP, EAS) and FTP (File Transfer Protocol). BBS (Bulletin Board) systems like AOL and CompuServe gave way to the explosion that was the WWW, based on the work of TBL (Tim Berners Lee) at CERN.
Like a lot of technology, there are many starters, many false starts, much stumbling, before something gets up and running. As they say, Build It, And They Will Come.

The one thing that everybody seems to forget is that being colonised by the British had one major advantage especially for countries within Africa they where then a lot less likely to be attacked and have their people forced and sold into the then still very active Arab slave trade as the Arab countries didn't want the trouble it would bring so although not an ideal thing being ruled or governed by another nation and living by there rules it was better than living in chattel slavery in another country

From Magna Carta, English Common Law, the 1688 Bill of Rights, Britain is the source of most of the Western worlds ideas of freedom and liberty and democracy. The origin and source of places like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, even the USA, Hong Kong and Singapore are two far eastern legacies of the "evil empire". The Commonwealth and even the greatest democratic nation in the world, India. The abolition of slavery - against immense internal and global resistance. Refusing to accept Hitler's peace, and preservation of the empire, overtures after the fall of France - that is interesting "what if" when you look into it. Not too shabby. "Cat's Eyes" are those small refelctors on roads which shine when a car headlight illumintes them. They are now found all over the world on most roads. Their design is such that the light from the headlight is refelected over a wide angle so no metter where you are the light is seen by your eyes. The ingenuity is that there's a little depression in front of the reflectors and a brush. The bump part is on a spring. Water collects in the depression and when the bump is depressed by a car tyre it is pushed down, and the collected water together with the brushes cleans the front of the reflector so they don't need regular cleaning. Hi, A cat's eye reflector, also called a road stud, is a raised marker on a road that helps drivers see the lane markings and edges of the road, especially at night or in low-visibility conditions.
They are called cat's eyes because their reflective properties resemble a cat's eye reflecting light. Here's a breakdown of how they work:
Retroreflection: The key component is a special material that reflects light directly back to its source. This means a driver's headlights hit the reflector and bounce right back towards the driver, making the stud appear very bright.
Construction: The reflective bit is usually encased in a dome-shaped, tough plastic housing with a flexible rubber base. This allows them to flex when driven over and also helps keep the reflective surface clean.
Cat's eye reflectors are very important for road safety, particularly when it's dark or foggy. They help drivers stay in their lane and avoid collisions.

There is no doubt that Britain did some awful things in the countries we colonised but what was the rest of the world doing at the same time? Exactly the same, they conquered territory for financial gain.
The main reason Britain was so successful at empire building wasn't because of brute force. It was because the countries would rather have Britain helping than the alternatives.
Like it or not the world would be a much harsher, more dangerous place, lives would be much harder for the vast majority of people and life expectancy would be much lower than it is now.
Simply put life is better for the majority of people now because of Britain.

Not just us but other countries outside of Africa. All the positive stuff like medicine and railways and things like that yes definitely but the ability to kill thousands I think we should have withheld and let Africa develop them themselves over time. Ending the global slave trade was an unexpected thing to do, but it was done. It reduced misery and loss of life. One should not forget the Muslim record on slavery, which was WORSE than that of Europeans. So evil I don't want to describe it, but I should: Mass castrations. MILLIONS. Religion of Peace?
However, there is another factor in terms of lives saved and quality of life: Technology (especially medicine and agricultural technology) reduces deaths due to diseases and malnutrition. I don't know how many lives were saved (or spared terrible misery) by technology. I don't know how to calculate it. But it would be interesting to compare it to the losses due to slavery. Not to excuse slavery. But just to provide a wider perspective. And yes, you would need to take into account the millions lost in WW1 and WW2.
