British invention reaction reaction Britain invented
Britains greatest gift to the world, was ending the global slave trade. Before Britain put a stop to it. Slavery was common practice since the dawn of man.
Yeah. 👍
Yet today in London alone, there are estimated to be over 100,000 slaves, undocumented workers with no visas or passports, work in wealthy homes, kitchens, prostitution, etc etc ..
And no one addresses this.
Amazing.
There is still a global slave trade, but we don’t talk about it.
It still is common, particularly in the middle east
(edited because of the number of idiots who are struggling to read):
Yeah... We also started it...
And, is course, by "it" I mean the mass global market in slaves as a commodity, not actual slavery itself. Oh, and no, the word "slav" is not relevant. Pretty sure the Romans and Africans got there first....
We Brits are very humble. We shout our failures before we shout our greatness. 🇬🇧🇬🇧👌

Without the British we would not have the life we have now or the ability to communicate over the internet. I’m grateful to them. They have saved billions of lives with the discovery of antibiotics and antiseptics, vaccines. They have gave the world so much more than they ever took from it and they deserve recognition.
At times I am ashamed at our behaviour but at other times proud.

You think Britain invented the Internet?
You must be British
@@Golfer-rn7lh English computer scientist (Tim Berners-Lee) best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web, the HTML markup language, the URL system, and HTTP. AKA the internet.
@Golfer-rn7lh You have to recognise the difference between 'internet' and 'web'.
The internet was a peace dividend after the collapse of the USSR, which came about when the technology of DARPANET (US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) and JANET (European Joint Academic Network) was opened up to the public and spread like wildfire. An idea whose time had come. Also worth a mention is the French Minitel system, SCADA, etc.
The internet is primarily the hardware and the communication protocol (TCPIP) that runs on it. Built on top of that are all the things we know as users. Early things such as email (POP, SMTP, IMAP, EAS) and FTP (File Transfer Protocol). BBS (Bulletin Board) systems like AOL and CompuServe gave way to the explosion that was the WWW, based on the work of TBL (Tim Berners Lee) at CERN.
Like a lot of technology, there are many starters, many false starts, much stumbling, before something gets up and running. As they say, Build It, And They Will Come.
The one thing that everybody seems to forget is that being colonised by the British had one major advantage especially for countries within Africa they where then a lot less likely to be attacked and have their people forced and sold into the then still very active Arab slave trade as the Arab countries didn't want the trouble it would bring so although not an ideal thing being ruled or governed by another nation and living by there rules it was better than living in chattel slavery in another country
First time hearing this, I’m amazed!
@@starrlarh Arabs were taking African slaves 400 years prior to westerners buying slaves on the coast. Of course they didn't want blacks to breed so all black men were castrated on route, many thousands bleed to death. All because eunuchs were of more value in Arab markets.
@@starrlarh Britain compensated slave owners to give up their slaves …. We have only just made the final payment . We incurred huge costs plus interest … otherwise the slave trade would have continued. Britain created a special anti-slavery navy that stopped the slave ships and released the slaves… this doesn’t fit with the British being the baddies in everything … William Wilberforce .. look him up and the payments to plantation owners and the special naval ships ..
It wasn't just Britain who colonised Africa.

We ended slavery in Britain in the 11th century, anyone bringing slaves to visit were in for a shock once they landed. The moment the slave stepped on our soil they were free. That really upset the owners who usually brought their best and favourite slave. Every court case to keep the slave lost.

@@stephenquigley6617not because he was a good person though 😂. The British people as a whole stopped world slavery.....we demanded it and the royal navy and army inforced it until slavery was almost gone. Africa still slave today and the middle east yet they still act like little crybaby victims.
@@stephenquigley6617William band the export of slaves without payment to the royal purse in 1069, the English church then banned slavery in 1112, effectively making it illegal in England. Perhaps the most famous quote is 'The air of England is to pure for any slave to breeve' combining English arigance and a sence of natural justice.

"Cat's Eyes" are those small refelctors on roads which shine when a car headlight illumintes them. They are now found all over the world on most roads. Their design is such that the light from the headlight is refelected over a wide angle so no metter where you are the light is seen by your eyes. The ingenuity is that there's a little depression in front of the reflectors and a brush. The bump part is on a spring. Water collects in the depression and when the bump is depressed by a car tyre it is pushed down, and the collected water together with the brushes cleans the front of the reflector so they don't need regular cleaning. A genious invention!
Very intelligent invention

He could have mentioned that hovercrafts were a British invention. And 2 huge huge huge things the British gave the world are weekends and holidays. Also police were a British 1st thing and the fire brigade.
Um, no! The idea of a day of rest (the Sabbath, the origin of the weekend) and of holidays (derived from 'holy days' i.e. religious festivals) came from the Jewish Torah (Bible) many centuries before Britain ever had any idea of rest days, whether weekends or holidays.

Hi, A cat's eye reflector, also called a road stud, is a raised marker on a road that helps drivers see the lane markings and edges of the road, especially at night or in low-visibility conditions.
They are called cat's eyes because their reflective properties resemble a cat's eye reflecting light. Here's a breakdown of how they work:
Retroreflection: The key component is a special material that reflects light directly back to its source. This means a driver's headlights hit the reflector and bounce right back towards the driver, making the stud appear very bright.
Construction: The reflective bit is usually encased in a dome-shaped, tough plastic housing with a flexible rubber base. This allows them to flex when driven over and also helps keep the reflective surface clean.
Cat's eye reflectors are very important for road safety, particularly when it's dark or foggy. They help drivers stay in their lane and avoid collisions.
That's a real eye opener.
@@rod370 the inventor made a fortune !!!
Another clever part is that they are different colours for regular lanes, off-ramps and merging lanes. Useful, and it does make the motorways look pretty at night.
It's the men in sheds thing in the UK. They spend forever tinkering with stuff and every now and again, find something great.

Actually it was a Brit who invented the Jet engine. The Germans got hold of his designs and used it to actually build one first.
The actual design was around in the early 1930s before the war but the British Government thought it was a ludicrous design and said No! 🙄
The German jet was a pulse engine (at slow speed it sounded similar to a motorcycle), designed in Germany by a German. Whittle's jet was a different design.
It was in the 1920s Whittle took his design to the RAF, but they wouldn't fund him to build it.
The Poms had cenrifugal compressors, the Germans axial flow which is what is still used today.
@@richardlucas5234 The pulse jet was only used in the V1 (buzzbomb), Whittle used a radial compressor where the ME262 used an axial compressor, which is what modern jet engines use.
The radial compressor only allows 1 stage of compression, whereas with the axial compressor, you can have several stages of compression, thereby increasing the available power.
@@patrickporter6536 Yes, it is true that axial compressor variations eventually replaced the allied 40s and 50s centrifugal compressor variations. Both variations are turbo jet engines though and the original conception of the Turbo jet engine was Frank Whittle's in 1928

To all my brothers and sisters around the world - You’re Welcome!!
The world's first pedal bicycle was invented by Kirkpatrick Mcmillan, a blacksmith living near Penpont in Dumfriesshire in Scotland in 1839. He even rode it to Glasgow in 1842, some 65 miles distant, but knocked over a pedestrian and was fined five shillings (25p).
There is no doubt that Britain did some awful things in the countries we colonised but what was the rest of the world doing at the same time? Exactly the same, they conquered territory for financial gain.
The main reason Britain was so successful at empire building wasn't because of brute force. It was because the countries would rather have Britain helping than the alternatives.
Like it or not the world would be a much harsher, more dangerous place, lives would be much harder for the vast majority of people and life expectancy would be much lower than it is now.
Simply put life is better for the majority of people now because of Britain.
I can’t agree less with you! 👍

Many countries colonised by the Brits, have become the best and richest on the planet.
We still can't stop wars around the world, that would make me proud.🇬🇧🇬🇧
Warehouses had a very bad name for catching on fire and were very expensive in the loss of goods and rebuilding because they were made of wood , an Englishman in kidyminster designed fire proof warehouses using metal for support and bricks for the fire proofing up to 5 floors , American architects expanded this design for taller buildings but with far better and lighter fire proofing materials hence the skyscrapers
He wizzed passed “the cat’s eye’. The story goes that the inventor was walking home in the dark and couldn’t see clearly. He thought if he had a light that was reflected from something on the ground he’d see where he was going. So he invented “the cat’s eye”, car headlights reflect light on dark country roads and they don’t break if tyres roll over them.
And not to forget the world wide web, you wouldn't be seeing this without that 🇬🇧👍🏻
We couldn't have been that horrific if 50+ of the previously colonised countries - now totally independent - CHOSE to join the Commonwealth of Nations which is the LARGEST unified group of countries IN THE WORLD.

The British changed the world for the better basically
Quite a lot of the achievements came out of the British academic institutions where the inventors had the time and resources to develop ideas. The Universities had the funding both from government and industry to allow developers to utilise as much time as needed and to draw from multiple other specialists to combine their expertise into one invention that gets attributed to the project leader. Even recently Oxford university was one of the front runners in developing the Covid vaccine utilising thousands of scientists from around the country and abroad.

Actually the jet engine was invented long before the Germans, it was a English RAF pilot called Frank Whittle that invented the jet engine FACT. The Germans did have a jet fighter in WW2 but they had stolen the plans of the jet engine from Frank Whittle, and Nazi Germany were the first to have a jet engine fighter but us British also had a Jet fighter near the end of WW2 but it was also much more superior to the Nazi German fighter in every way. 💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴

Hardly superior in every way , lower speed ,lower turn and roll rate ,the Meteor was important but you could never say it was better than a 262 , Eric "Winkle" Brown gave his views on the two planes many times and never placed the Meteor above the 262 and he was a British test pilot and early jet pioneer.

I think that Britain's finest export and gift to the world was the English language.
The social way of life established within Britain is being currently recognised as having good Christian values, which has allowed to freedom of speech movement and thought. I would suggest that that allows for the wider potential for invention and development.

Look Up Britain's crusade against The Slave Trade
Let's not forget the brits were the only country in Europe to stand up to the Nazis, who were bad dudes, before the yanks eventually joined the fight. Every other country in europe rolled over and capitulated.
I'm in love! 😍
Ending the global slave trade was an unexpected thing to do, but it was done. It reduced misery and loss of life. One should not forget the Muslim record on slavery, which was WORSE than that of Europeans. So evil I don't want to describe it, but I should: Mass castrations. MILLIONS. Religion of Peace?
However, there is another factor in terms of lives saved and quality of life: Technology (especially medicine and agricultural technology) reduces deaths due to diseases and malnutrition. I don't know how many lives were saved (or spared terrible misery) by technology. I don't know how to calculate it. But it would be interesting to compare it to the losses due to slavery. Not to excuse slavery. But just to provide a wider perspective. And yes, you would need to take into account the millions lost in WW1 and WW2.
