    Part 2 of my tips and tricks for Procreate...one year later...right before the new update...well...
    I am sharing some of the new stuff I found during this year - not ALL the tricks Procreate has but the ones which helps me speed up my work process like the alpha lock, how to fin layer & move the colors or create whole palettes from photos. Plus I am currently testing the new Procreate 5.2 so I will share some of the new features we can expect like brush memory, color cards and recent brushes.
    Oh, I will also rant about the transform tool and why it is the way it is.

    Instead of duplicating a layer and Alpha Locking it, you can also use Clipping Masks. Making a new layer into a Clipping Mask means it will only paint onto the same Alpha as the preceding non-“Clipping Mask” layer. Should achieve the same effect.

    Blurry scaling tips: Procreate is a RASTER program, not VECTOR so no matter what the scaling will pixelate/blur. (I hope one day Procreate offers vector brushes which would be a game changer) I typically try to make my canvas DPI/size a lot bigger so any scaling that happens later on has at least more "data" to work with. Otherwise, my other workaround is to try and trace the scaled up version on another layer to make it match again.
    When duplicating layers, it works the same way. I did an animation and made many copies of the first drawing and saw the quality of the linework drop around 10 or so. Never copy from a copy if you can help it-- rename the first main layer and make all your duplications from there!

    For line art, my favourite way to do it is to set the line art layer to Overlay and make sure it’s above all the colour layers! It changes a normal black line art layer into a darker version of whatever colour is underneath and saves SO much time! The only thing you have to remember when using this method is to make sure your colours fill the space under the lines, which you can do while colouring by lowering the line art opacity and making sure the colours reach the very edges!

    I suggest using the liquify tool when you just need to nudge an object or slightly transform it. I changed my workflow into this since it using liquify tool doesn't lose the quality. If it affects other parts of the illustration, I suggest selecting the area you want to adjust first, then use liquify.

    • @BobboAndonova
      @BobboAndonova  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I use liquify a lot too but it also mess up the quality - mostly blurring the texture brushes. At least I can't complain about Procreate cause liquify in Photoshop does the same thing too.

    Setting the layer to alpha lock creates a temporary selection of the non-transparent pixels on a layer. So a quick trick I use is to set it to alpha lock, select my color, then use fill layer, turn off alpha lock. It will only affect the color of the opaque pixels of the layer! Whether it is a full shape, line work, or semi transparent gradient.
    You need an iPad with an A12 chip or True Depth camera to use the face reference option. Simply put if you want ‘face options’ you have to upgrade your iPad.
    Bicubic, Bilinear, and Nearest Neighbor all have their uses. Part of the problem you are having is that the only examples you show, are one color surrounded by transparent pixels. Bilinear is much more common with jpg compression so if you were to import an image of text and resize and rotate it, Bilinear could work better. If you manipulate something with a color gradient, or detailed shading, bicubic could work better because it samples from a wider area. If you had an illustration with a minimal color palette and needed to grab more than one area with better defined borders between the colors, then Nearest Neighbor might work best.

Don’t get me wrong I’m still not an amazing artist and am constantly striving to improve but god damn that first drawing I did was horrendous 😂 I didn’t know how to use procreate or how to draw digitally or how to even use references. I couldn’t figure out layers like what they were and how to get rid of the ‘line art’ (it really wasn’t art so can I even call it line art lmao) but yes just keep practicing you will genuinely surprise yourself!!! As someone who also has transforming as one of their main techniques, the transform tool refuses to do anything right. I physically cannot make it smaller or anything without it going wrong, and this is awful as I’m someone who enjoys making moodboards and using references and this completely f4cks with using photos, procreate is now almost unusable now that I can’t adjust things like this, I hate this so much.
    In the past it would just get blurry which whilst it could be a bit annoying, it’s FAR better than it being disgustingly bitcrushed like is done here. I honestly hate this update for this sole reason, it’s completely f4cked with part of what I use and I hate it. I can’t believe that the people at procreate thought this was better than slight blurring. I want this fixed NOW.

    You know when you fill in with colours and you drag to the right so you don't get those weird white lines?Well,I got that issue when I use Alpha lock to fill in the contour lines. They always have that white line around them and it's quite distracting. Do you have a solution to that problem? Also,do you use the 6B pencil for your contour lines?

    I’ve never had any major issues with the transform tool until AFTER this update. I’ve always had the Interpolation settings on Bilinear, but now with any of the settings if I wanna resize something or move something, the quality just gets so much worse. This is horrible bc the transform tool is one of the most helpful things for my work. I really hope this issue gets fixed soon.

    Hey so idk if anyone will see this but a quick fix to the transform issue is to set the canvas dpi really high (i do 1000+ on my canvases but it depends on your device power)

    Maybe a workaround for rotating the selected parts is to rotate the canvas and taking a screen grab then import the rotated picture. Haven't tried this because Im sooooo busy not sure if this works as a rough solution.

    • @BobboAndonova
      @BobboAndonova  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that won't work during sketching cause if I capture the screen as a photo (this is what I got your idea is right?) I will import the whole thing on the screen - lines colors AND background.
      But maybe this is a good trick when you want to transform in the final stage cause by then a lot of stuffs are already merged. 🙌

      @@BobboAndonova As a game developer like myself it would not be to hard for procreate to write a script to select the certain piece of drawing rotate the canvas and enlarge or shrink then take a screen grab of the certain selected piece only and re-apply it to your work without any loss of quality......hope Procreate is listening 😎

    Unfortunately making pixel art bigger will always lead to blurring as the program has to guess what pixels are needed to fill in the size that wasn’t there before. You can shrink down without loss of quality, but not up. Even photoshop has this problem, but is probably better at the scales your are transforming because it’s a beast of a program.

    17:10 losing quality is just what happens. And the more you transform the more blurry it will be… nearest neighbor is sharp but will look really bad many times specially when upscaling. In photoshop and some apps they avoid it by having smart layers/objects that even if you rotate or change size it is calculated from the original resolution. Smart objects is called in Photoshop.

    • @InkSans_FandomSoda

      No, no I don’t think you understand.
      This isn’t the blurring, everyone is used to the blurring.
      It’s no longer blurring, it’s pixelating in a far uglier fashion.
