I Have the 388 and the 246 PortaStudio that I bought new ($1595 and $1095 respectively)when they were first introduced running through pipeline into Studio one. I also record drums and Bass to tape first on the 388. So I was pleasantly suprised to see this collection in plug-in format!
Great video!! I had 2 Portastudios and in high school, they had one of those 2-track reel-to-reel Tascam recorders. This plugin is to my audial-memory, very accurate!! All the PAIN of the old days... with the exception of having to clean the capstan and pinch-rollers; also there was the cleaning and degaussing of the tape heads. That makes using a chunk of CPU power all worthwhile. LOL!!! 🙂 The sound of those Tascam recorders is a nice addition to someone's plugin arsenal!!
try bouncing every track with the effect on, and save the mix, then compare it to the mix without. The difference adds up big time. just putting it on the master isn't enough to really get the most out of these.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy thanks for these reviews.... your other tape vid is what made me actually go and buy their other tape bundle .... now I’m tempted to get this tape bundle 😂
I have all the IK Tape plugins. They're all good. TASCAM 388 is probably my favorite, in part because I like the integrated EQ. They do have unusually high PDC latency, though. I wish IK would release "live" versions of these tools with low or no latency... Then we could use them during composition to approximate the sound, and swap them out with the higher quality high latency versions before mixdown.
I Tracked thru the four track emulation a long long time ago. I used it with dbx NR boxes, wish they modeled the different noise reduction machines that you had to work with this one. It gave the sound of the tape more compression and some more warm too.
LOL! You crazy kids. Why would anyone want to sound like they recorded on a Portastudio except for the sake of misplaced nostagia? We geezers used them because that's all we had. Why do I doubt folks will use this plugin as a "subtle effect?" I'm thinking there's about to be a bunch of "Roman Candle" / Exile in Guyville sounding tracks coming our way. I do see there is no "really loud tape hiss" or "mud" controls on the demo, so these will have to be supplied elsewhere.
Most cassette four-tracks that I remember were biased and calibrated to be used with Type II cassettes, which is why they sound so "bad" (unless, of course, you like it) with Type I cassettes.
Tape 2 will sound better but they more expensive n the 4 tape sounds much better n clear with a professional tape deck it will sound beautiful for a cassette tape
