A perfect example of why they're called "trash pandas." They are so cute, tho. Your friend is lucky that Mr. Chris Notap is his neighbor! You always have excellent ideas to solve everything from small to large to extra cute problems! And it's always entertaining to watch your intelligence at work. I hope you and your family are well. 🙏🏻
Congratulations, I can only imagine your raccoons will become increasingly intelligent, leading them to start their own TH-cam channel with hints and tips on bin scavenging 😀👍
I had a racoon tip my bin and wake me up last night, so this is very topical for me! We have separate streams here: recycle, garbage and compost. The latter "wheelie" bin has a large handle at the back / on top. Seeing your belt and buckle @5:23 gave me an idea, so I made a short buckled loop, and screwed the middle to the wall at the same height as the handle. The result is very easy to use, and looks pretty good too! That'll keep it upright, and now we'll see if the critters are smart enough to open the heavy snap that holds the bin closed!
Skunks, squirrels, possums, rabbits and cats. All that is missing is deer. I set up a camera in the backyard and even though I have a fence surrounding my gardens, rabbits, deer, possums and skunks found their way around the fence. I asked myself why did I bother? 😂
With the new straps, it will probably hold the lid on even after the raccoons figure out they need to chew thru the rope. When I had horses, we put our cans near the fence that we had a fence charger working and put 'hot' wire around the cans. It worked fine, too.
Genius. Great observation. Especially with the Wyze cams. Toronto homeowners have been buying expensive "raccoon-proof" bins that turns out can be easily defeated. Raccoons are very analytical creatures. Your idea is simple, effective and, so far, a challenge to the raccoons. Well done. This is going on my to-do list for my home.
Good video as always. You should include the make/model of camera in the description as the search brings up a ton of options and may go out of date as models become less available.
Amazon can be difficult that way. It is a US Amazon link under the video. If you are outside the US and click on the link, it will bring you to your country's Amazon and could show a bunch of cameras instead of directly to the camera in question.
I really enjoy Your Channel Chris. I bought two of the Wyzie cameras after watching Your video showing how You set them up in Your garage and they work great. Thanks for all of the great remedies 🤠
I have an outdoor cat that I put out food for, and the raccoons always come by to clean up any leftovers. One Spring I saw 13 adults and young'uns on my porch cam at the same time, mostly just lounging around, since the little bit of food wasn't enough to justify that big of a turnout. I had no idea there were that many living around here.
Trash pandas are very crafty and determined. Good job at stopping them! That camera is awesome! I need to see if they are waterproof/can be in the rain.
Yes the camera is meant for indoors or outdoors and can be in the rain. I have used it to get footage of squirrels trying to get into my squirrel proof bird feeders. It has been in all weather.
Last year, there was a momma raccoon with a couple babies, crawling through my furnace duct (in my sister's room, and she freaked out!). How they got in there is still a mystery.
Raccoons are insidious, crafty, inventive and intelligent at getting garbage out of garbage cans. In the Adirondack mountains, people basically have to armour their garbage cans in cages to keep raccoons out.
That's correct. The cost for the camera and the "cam plus" is very cheap for a security system for your home or whatever else you want to use it for. Check it out.
Once saw a discarded can of SPAM which'd been absolutely shredded by a raccoon. Don't know if it was the teeth or claws, but I've had a healthy respect ever since!
You really don't know the activity that goes on around your house at night in the dark until you can actually see the footage. It was an interesting experiment for sure. It was amazing the number of skunks that passed through.
Having cans that are supplied by another company I’m not allowed to do the things you’re doing. But I was able to use the motion to trigger a sound command, stop doing that or get away from there or 5 pound sledge hitting a piece of wood. This has been extremely effective because each time they hear a different noise that rotates out randomly. I did that by dividing the field of you in the three sections so as they move around, they get a different noise but generally the noise they go running when they come back, they hear different noise and running again. This has 100% 5:24 effective consistently for over three years. The only problem I have now is when people don’t put food up next to the front door and put it on the steps. They are able to run up and grab the food. Make sure all deliveries require interaction with a live person.
I had problems years ago by an assortment of critters, mostly racoons. I set a critter camera up to see who was responsible. I had, on any given, night from one to six racoons tryin' to get at the garbage cans. I made a platform of about 10" off the ground and now they don't bother any of the garbage cans. I have no idea why.
LOL ! Hilarious video. Raccoons are in my yard frequently but they haven’t been able to get into my rolling “wheelie bin” that was provided by the sanitation company.
Those rascals look pretty well fed. We used to have a family visit our porch often. They got so used to me they would eat peanut butter off of a tongue depressor. They do like to investigate. 👍🍻
We discovered that Raccoons will always search for places they expect food to be. They rarely search randomly. So we just move the parked location of the cans each week. Several of the cans don't even have lids..as long as we move them around..the raccoons move on to other locations. This only works on a lot where you have at least a couple acres to move the cans around to. If you have a small city or suburban lot..well, it's a smaller area and the raccoons will probably smell the new location and head for it.
As I watched this, I wondered, “What does he do on garbage day?” Most people put garbage out at the end of their driveway the night before. If you put these receptacles out, they will need to be unlatched by the garbage men. I doubt they will be happy about having to take the extra time…they work hard and fast. And if the receptacles have a large bag inside where the smaller bags go throughout the week, then putting that plastic bag out makes the whole shebang child’s play for the raccoons. Let us know!
I did mention that to my neighbour to remove the lids when he puts the garbage out so the garbagemen don't have to fuss with it. Another commenter mentioned that the raccoons will come back to the same spot, where the garbage bins are normally, and are confused when they are moved for something like garbage day and won't always find them.
This isn't over.
You're right! They are crafty.
And they NEVER give up.
The Raccooninator says, "I'll be back."
LOL
Funny seeing the possum go after the skunk.

Wow! Thank you for that!

Hilarious mental image!
Great example of using well thought out logic and steps to make this a successful project.
I love you videos! Thanks for the link to the camera. I needed one for the outdoors to see what's eating my garden. 🤷🏻♀️😂
@5:15 That is one well fed critter!
😆😂

You are making raccoon deterrence look easy, it's not always the case. I do love to see a win though. Very nice engineering.
Good demonstration of the principle of Successive Approximation. You invent what you need one step at a time.

In time a trash panda will chew through the lid to get to the food, at least that is what they did to mine.

Wow! That’s quite a few raccoons!
Look out guys. Chris is making angry racoons. lol
Raccoons look like burglars 😂
Your videos are always so helpful.. Thank you for taking the time to help..
Glad you like them!
Damn those are some well fed raccoons .
Yes! That one was like a beach ball!!
Trash pandas are very crafty and determined. Good job at stopping them! That camera is awesome! I need to see if they are waterproof/can be in the rain.

Great video as always. You my are nothing if not persistent. Great ideas, that really work.
Clever solutions.
Those raccoons are pretty fat. The local bins are good providers.
Last year, there was a momma raccoon with a couple babies, crawling through my furnace duct (in my sister's room, and she freaked out!). How they got in there is still a mystery.

Perhaps the cages are more for bears?
It's bad that we pay good money for things and then we need a genius to fix it so it works. 🥇
Nicely done.
When recommending the camera, you didn't mention that in order to pull those videos, you have to subscribe to their cloud service.
That's correct. The cost for the camera and the "cam plus" is very cheap for a security system for your home or whatever else you want to use it for. Check it out.

It’s a regular zoo at your trash cans 😂

And all that's left are some hungry critters!
Those poor skunks & Raccoons are hungry atleast trow some food for the poor souls!😥😰
👍👍👍 Brilliant. Thank you
Not gonna lie; I fully expected the racoon to return with a multitool to undo all the screws.
Great ideas! I'm sure your neighbor is happy. Now the varmits are on their way to your place…haha

That's interesting. Only 10". I wonder why this has deterred them?
Will racoons take over the world. ?
Really interesting video Chris, although we don’t have Raccoons where I live but we got foxes 🇬🇧
They will get in , they always do.
Wait a week. The racoons will chew through the cans.
It's been 8 months now and they have not gotten into any of them, yet.
Poor Chubberz Mc Chubbertin.
1:27 - 1:29 I see you have the same problem that I do, spider webs in front of the camera.
Yes. It's an object that they seems to like to connect a web too and it doesn't matter where it is.
@@chrisnotap yes they see the bugs are attracted to the i.r. light and the spiders put up a web to catch said insects
Good video, thanks for sharing YAH bless !
Awesome.
Possums always attack skunks - anyone know why? Are they immune to their spray?
That was interesting to see. I was surprised that the skunk didn't spray the Possum.
That yard is like zoo!
You don't really know what roams out there in the night until you actually put out a camera!
@0:06, wondering how you reached out to the raccoons...
Gute Idee 👍
Cool!
Do they see in darkness like your camera or they act blindly?

I've read they can figure out anything a 3 year old child can.

hej everybody wants to east. At least give them something aside. Great video. Thank you
