I guess this is what they decided to go with after shutting down Pac-Man 99.
At least with Pac-Man 99, there was a single-player mode. When they shut _this_ one down, the money paid for this will just be wasted.
Depends on your definition of wasted. When you buy season tickets to a sports team's games, the season ends and those tickets can't be used anymore. Plenty of things people spend money on have only a limited use. At least it's not a subscription service where you may not even use it for multiple months of time, meanwhile you pay every month for it. Though, I do think all games should offer some amount of offline content just so players can practice on their own or re-experience it to some degree post shutdown, even if most players won't be going back to the game by that point

Video games are not sold (or "licensed," in their awful legal parlance) with the expectation that someday, they won't be playable. Getting an experience that, practically speaking, someday will be utterly defunct and impossible to have again, is not what people have in mind when they buy a game.
At least at a sporting event you're having a social experience, and can buy snacks.

Regardless, you may think games are sold like that, but they aren't anymore. Games get shut down all the time. Most big games these days aren't designed to be played in perpetuity without some kind of profit motive for the companies. They're investing hundreds of millions into each of these major projects, so they want to make billions off of them. Once things slow down, they want to force the dedicated fans off of that and onto the newest game to help make that new community thrive and more profitable for a longer time.
I don't like this either, but this is the reality of it. Whether or not people feel it's worth it is up to them. I personally think they should just let people get into the game regardless of connection, even if you can never do anything with anyone else in a final update around the time servers are shut down. But there is 0 incentive for any studio to ever do this.
That all said, I've played hundred hour games that cost me $20 and felt ripped off by the quality and played 8 hour games for $60 and felt like I would've been happy to have spent double. While I want to show all my kids the games I played as I grew up, my gameboy games all have dead batteries, my GameCube disc reader broke, and so did my DS's hinge. My most treasured hardware and games from when I was little are dying or dead, so I'm gonna have to emulate for those where I can anyways, or find alternatives. I love single purchase = owning forever, but that really doesn't mean things will last forever anyways. If you can't spend $60 or less on a game and get your money's worth in the years it's online before the servers go down, then that sounds like it was either not a good game or you don't value your time very highly. I value my time highly, so I'll pay a lot to make sure I'm having an awesome experience the entire way through a game and be able to get my values worth out of it quickly. To me, if a game can't justify its cost within a week of having it, then it isn't a game worth having. Fine if you disagree, but saying your money was wasted after it shuts down means you put less value in the time you spent on the game over those years of access than what you spent on the game, and I think that's a pretty sad outlook to have
