  • Have you heard about The Paddock Eco Village in Castlemaine? In Castlemaine (VIC) there is a community of sustainable homes being built and some have been completed together with a community centre. In the future there will be communal gardens and each complex has communal washing lines and laundries. These are all built around the guidelines of the Living Building Challenge. This has seven requirements that they are built considering health and happiness, materials, energy, water, beauty, spirit and place and equity. This means the buildings are lovely places to live.
Castlemaine’s new eco-village, The Paddock, offers a ground-breaking model of sustainable living for people seeking a green lifestyle, a sense of community and closer links to nature. The leading-edge project comprises 27 architect-designed 8.1 energy-rated houses, with around two-thirds of the total area dedicated to shared food gardens, wetlands, native gardens and orchards as well as car parking on the perimeter.
The Hon Steve Bracks, AC, former Premier of Victoria,
described the eco-village as ‘…a truly inspirational response to the climate change crisis and at the same time a highly innovative housing solution. I’ve no doubt that it will become a model for similar projects around Australia and internationally’.
