I usually love the convo on this channel but the England team and Southgate discussion was rough and it shows a lack of understanding of the game and England’s football identity by this panel. Can’t believe I’m actually saying this but Égal was spot on using Portugal’s 2016 Euro run under Fernando Santos as an example of how Southgate could play to win this tourney. They played soccer terrorism and defended their way to winning the Euros. It ain’t pretty but it worked. England fans need to understand that your football identity is a tough, athletic, but mostly defense first team and it pretty much always has been. I don’t think I’ve ever watched England play a peer competitor off the park. I know you want to play like Spain but that high level of technical ability and creativity isn’t who you are. Sure you have some great technical players and a few creative ones but the football education of most of your players is in the English and German leagues which value defensive structure more than creative and fluid football. This is honestly why they should go get an Argentine coach for their next manager. For some reason that nation always produces coaches that blend good defensive structure with the ability to be lethal in attack while still allowing some of their creative players the freedom to express themselves. If you can’t get Simeone maybe somebody like Batista or Demichelis with a good staff could work.
