      Not friends --- business partners. People on YT get free stuff or access to equipment because it's "advertising". That's why it's misleading to watch these and think you're in the same boat as the channel owner.

    It's really fun when you're seeding on hilly ground and the seed "sloshes" over to one side of the box as it gets lower. You can end up missing some spots on the uphill side of the drill.

    Looks like your timing just right for moisture , time of year and the fields grass is at a good height as well .

  • @rt3box6tx74
    @rt3box6tx74 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Seed to soil contact means the seed has no exposure to air/sunlight. If you get a rain you'll be okay.
    The most challenging part of running a rig with a packer is the conflict between getting disks to penetrate while having enough pressure on the packer to close the furrow. Its easynto have the packer pressure set so strong that it holds your disk openers off the ground - or visaversa.
    Many grasses do fine if broadcast over the top of a growing crop. The only issue is whether they can compete with established plants for moisture and get sunlight once they germinate. Good luck.

    We researched novel perennial fescue grass. It has “safe” endophytes for livestock but it lasts longer than endophyte free fescue. We are using our new drill seeder today on pastures for future horses etc today with that seed included! Our local feed store didn’t even know about that seed either! They were very interested. We are in Indiana.

    I recently watched a video where they show a technique of germinating grass seed before they spread the seed. The seeds were soaked and strained in 5 gallon paint strainer bags. They had to be planted at the first sign of germination or the bag becomes a tangled mess. The grass grew quickly and without the need for extra watering care that is usually needed to get the grass to germinate.

    Ya that seeder does a great Job, nice mixes also 👍 I'm playing manure spreader today ( #no tractor only 2 acres ) I just use a wheel barrel & muck from the winter area and a very long garden hose lol. The hose is 2 100' hoses connected so it reaches quite far on our 2 acres. I'm in Northern BC Canada, we still have some snow in patches on the field and its quite wet, so a tractor would just make a mess n e way

    The best way to seed in a hayfield to get a (mixed variety) hayfield like (a legume and a grass like timothy) is to drill each type of seed separately into different areas of the field in wide strips or across the field like maybe corner to corner of the field so the tall grasses don't shade or crowd out the legumes and then after cutting rake the two together to get a mixture for baling. That should help make it to where less reseeding is required and if you do reseed it will be easier to see and remember to use the right seed in the right area of the field.

    I really think you will want a seed drill of your own ! once you see the results you get from using it...the problem is they are more than a decent tractor !!!! very expensive ! but from what I understand , they are worth the money ! I think you will need to seed drill the big pasture you have been prepairing real heavy sense it hasn't been hay last year... i would plant it real soon ...it will be expensive to seed that big field but it will be a great crop if you do ! and you might consider renting a bail truck to make it easier good luck Even, keep after it !

    i have always liked the double disk openers on drills they seem to Cut the furrow open through grass a little better most single disk openers have a boot with a knife between the disk and seed boot. couldn't tell on the little drill you had. most new drills are "fluted feed " and older ones are what is called "double run " with a large side and a small side seed cup, i dont think they work very well for grasses . a paint brush works good to "sweep " the drill out . reseeding is hard as the seed is shaded and some grasses (alfalfa) produce a chemical that restricts germination

    I don’t know where you buy your seed but learned a hard and expensive lesson one time. The place I’d been getting seed from had a huge stockpile in some warehouse. Some of the seeds were old as dirt. Once I found a place I could buy fresher seed I got a much much better result using the same seed drill I’ve used many times on the other seed. Sometimes it is not the method or the timing, it the seed.

      Corn is a big seed with plenty of reserves to push up through the soil. Grass and legume seeds are tiny and can run out of gas if they're planted too deep.

    Nice way to inner seed a pasture. I've been thinking about trying to step up some of my pasture ground. But I grew up being told you can't plant alfalfa behind alfalfa. It has to be rotated out for a year because of what they call auto toxicity. But since yours was all dead anyway, maybe it will grow for you. This past fall I planted rye on a few acres to try it as a cover crop. It got a good start, and my beef cows really like grazing it. They have eaten far less hay than normal, but it has also been a mild winter. I'm seriously considering drone seeding it again into standing corn this fall for them to have for grazing next year. If it saves as much hay as it has this year, it'll be worth it. From what I've read, they say to seed it when the corn is starting to turn brown and dry down. I'll be looking into that this summer for sure! Good luck with your rejuvenation, I'm anxious to see it work for you!

    RYE grass, it comes up good, but it does nothing and most dies off every year. blue grass is a good spring grass but dies easy in the heat, and clover. all these cover good, but your feed stock fescue, gets smothered out by all of this from the start. and once the other three start to die, your fescue is left thin, so its not a good feed source unless you seed every year, just some old time advice. check on it with someone who has been doing much much longer.

    • @Redandranger
      @Redandranger 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You're probably seeding annual ryegrass, not perennial. The rule of thumb is quick germinating and establishing grasses are short-lived while longer lived grasses (and some legumes - trefoil) are hard to establish but will persist. No perfect seed. That's one reason why people mix seed types
