  • Today I've got a complete guide to the CTA Bus Public Transportation in Chicago!
If you're moving to Chicago, just visiting for travel, or you already live here and want to start taking advantage of the incredible public transportation in the Windy City, this guide is for you!
The Chicago Transit Authority is the governing body of the public transportation system here in the city, which includes both buses and trains.
The earliest forms of rapid transit in Chicago were horse drawn cars which began operating in 1859. They could only transport 12 passengers and maxed out at 3mph.
I hope you enjoyed this Chicago Vlog!

Videos like this are so helpful for people like me on the autism spectrum. I have a lot of trouble figuring out how things work in the moment and a lot of these tips are assumed by drivers/other passengers. It's really great to have someone lay out the routines and etiquette for public transportation!

Once again, good video. Usually when I am in the city, I have visitors with me. A tip I would give Is that the Ventra card can be used for more than one person. When you get on the bus, tell the bus driver how many people are in your group. The bus driver will tell you when to swipe your Ventra card for each person. The $.25 transfer applies to all the riders also. For the CTA trains, swipe your card and let a person go through the gate. After the first person goes through and the screen is red, swipe the card for the next person.
There is a lot of old CTA trains, busses and trolley cars at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. There is also the big Santa Fe sign from the Railway Exchange Building. The last time I went there was 2014 so I need to go again.

High quality of the message. Full knowledge for bus passengers and an invitation to those who are still reluctant. After watching and listening to it, you want to take a bus in Chicago and go somewhere. And of course a good approach to the green city of the future. I like it, thanks. There is no metro in the city where I live, but there are buses and trams.
    All the best!

Nice to check out the video as it compares when traveling on the MTA in New York City. Very similar information and there various color codes lines but they are identified by letters A, B, C, etc. or a group of letters are identified as the original train lines before they eventually where merged as one system such as the IRT, BMT. We even have a transit museum with the history of the transportation system of New York City. Yes we have to wear masks as well and the fair is $2.75 with various discounts depending if you are using a weekly or monthly pass and if you are disabled or elderly. Thanks for the information for when I decide to visit Chicago.

I took the 49/x49 for years going to Lane Tech. I got on at 51st and Western and went through alot of rough violent neighborhoods. But I always felt safe and never ever experienced anything negative. Of course winter conditions can slow down the bus by an hour or more sometimes. That's why you need unlimited data and watch a good Netflix
    show.

In your video the backdoors opened by themself and you mentioned that you have to inform the driver, if they don’t. My experience after dozens of rides was: you have to push the doors open manually. That’s also what the drivers told me to do and it’s written on the inside of the doors. A little bit confusing for tourists first time in Chicago

I'm contemplating a trip to Chicago by Air rather than by car. I believe the bus and El would be a good alternative to navigating the city. it's been 25 years since my last visit and I realize that some neighborhoods have changed but I would like to visit some areas around Downtown, Archer Ave., Midway Airport, and Ciscero safely. Any advice on which bus routes to avoid anywhere and best times to travel? Thank you Luis and am looking forward to more of your posts.

Fact: CTA does have electric buses in its current fleet. Their first battery electric bus is the 2014 New Flyer XE40. You can easily find this bus operating on rt 79 79th only during the rush hours. If you want to catch this bus, track the bus using CTA Bus Tracker and find bus number 701. This bus is very easy to spot, just find a bus in a blue paint scheme, don't get thrown off that face the paint is blue which is similar to Pace Suburban Bus (Public transit company that operates within the suburbs of Chicago and some parts of the city.) CTA also has a new fleet of Proterra Catalyst BE40's which is another batter electric bus. These buses are currently testing on start revenue service later in 2021 on routes 66 Chicago and 124 Navy Pier. Also most of their 60ft articulated buses hybrid diesel/electric buses. These buses are the 2008 New Flyer DE60LF 4000-4207 and 2012 New Flyer DE60LFR 4300-4332. And their diesel buses consists of 2006-09 New Flyer D40LF 1000-2029, 2000-02 Nova Bus LFS 2nd Generation models 6400-6883, and 2014/19 Nova Bus LFS 4th Generation models (2014: 7900-8324 and 2019: 8325-8349).

Wait on a main arterial street in sub zero weather,Western Ave is an example. 4 to 5 buses will pass after 15 minutes and the one that stops will be jam packed. It has been years since I rode the CTA but I hope that scenario is no longer true.Chicago, though, like New York City can allow an adult to never drive and get around the city. I didn't get a license till I was 36 years old. buses and L s got me everywhere.
