I made this last week for my son and it turned out perfectly. I didn't let the kids eat the food dye part though. I had never used fondant before, never painted a cake, and am no artist, and it still looked amazing! Can't seem to upload a photo here but wanted to say thank you!

I absolutely agree with you about colouring the fondant to a red, it does come out a pinkish colour not a true red, so I would have done this the same way as you
