Absolutely. Jim is relatable while also being a professional. It seems like this is exactly who he is. If his friend asked these questions, this is probably pretty close to how he would talk to them. I don't want the channel to change, or if it does, it's because he wants to do something fun for him.

Yes hostas are shade plants but here in the north the green ones have no problem growing in full sun it’s a very common sight to see. The greens and green with white variegated edges. They got no problem as long as we get normal rain, if it’s dry for extended time they will get crispy edges but that’s it

Our mowers liked to edge the Bermuda grass adjacent to our shrubs beds. I later realized the Bermuda was rooting under the mulch in the direction of the plants. I had them stop, and now I leave about a foot of mulched space between the Bermuda and the plants. Every 3-4 weeks, I dig up any creeping Bermuda. While it goes against your philosophy of not pulling back any mulch, I have been able to keep the Bermuda and other weeds out of the shrub beds. It doesn't take much time, but I need to be diligent about it.

I have a trench as a border for my garden beds that is deeper than the roots of my Bermuda grass. The mulch falls into the trench at an angle, but I make sure there is bare clay/dirt next to the grass. In the summer, I keep the grass under control by trimming it tightly with a weed eater. After 5 years, I still haven't gotten any Bermuda in the garden 🎉

If you see arborists go into your neighborhood to work on a neighbors property, you can always go ask them if they want to dump the mulch at your house! They are usually more than happy to drive a block or so to drop off the mulch rather than having to pay to dump it somewhere.

As a Covid gardener, I found more success using starter fertilizer and the no dig method than not. Mainly bc my flower beds were all brand new and my TX clay soil was practically a concrete slab with nothing growing in it but weeds and grubs. I was told I didn’t need to add anything except plants and the life would come and the roots would break up the clay. I ended up with dead plants and several $100s down the drain. I did not have the benefit of time in rich compost, wood chips and what not. I followed all the TH-cam garden influencers like yourself, Garden Answer, Linda Vater and a few others. I use all organic fertilizers, mulch and compost every year now. And I still use starter fertilizer with all my new plants. My flower beds are so much healthier and my garden is flourishing. I don’t attribute it all to starter fertilizer but I noticed it DID make a difference when I first started.
About the TH-camrs who “pour it in every hole” maybe they are in the same situation as I was OR they swear by Espoma products like you do the SLP collection and Encore products? Plus I admire Garden Answer’s expertise as I do yours. Like you said, to each his own.

    • @carlavickers4644

Hi there! I’m on 50 ac farm land. I weed whack to the ground the edges of 11 buildings, and about 3000 feet of fence line (I’m a bit obsessed about clean edges) I find that whacking to the ground kills one weed but a different weed takes its place. I’m being reseeded by dormant farm fields. It takes me about 7-8 hrs to weed whack. I found a very careful narrow application of RM43 on the edges of fence lines and AG buildings kills the weeds and retards new growth for 4-5 months… you might have to spot treat here and there. DONT use it in any area you want to plant in. There are TH-cam videos on RM43. Lasts way longer than roundup. It’s been great for my application. I don’t use it near any gardens, on a windy day, or if it’s going to rain. Cuts my weed whacking by 2/3ds! Best of luck!

My Mom has a cryptomeria shrub that is looking bad. Browning in spots but also showing new growth. It’s an established shrub. Been in the ground 5 years. Does she prune the bad/brown off?
I researched why these shrubs do this and read overwatering or under-watering being two causes. Those options wouldn’t apply to this particular shrub. So what else do you think could be causing it? Her other cryptomeria (same space, same age) is looking great.
    Thanks for reading!

I think you just saved my multistem serviceberry! Was planted in fall 2022 (Chicagp zone 5B-6) and in my hearts of hearts I know something was up with it…not much growth and yellowing (fall like ) leaves early spring…you mentioned those symptoms are of it being buried too deep…enter me running directly outside to check (my husband planted it) and YES! About 5 inches from root flare….immediatly started to it dig it and it had barely rooted in…raised it and now fingers crossed! Thank you so much…I was thinking possibly fire blight or cedar apple rust, but was never too confident about that as the symptoms were not matching. Thanks again!

On the containers that are staying too wet another approach is to also get some pot feet under them. This gives a lot more drainage. In the UK it is almost an essential to have these across our wet winter months.

Thanks for another great week of videos! Earlier this spring, I purchased a native azalea with vibrant yellow blooms. I kept it in the nursery container until it finished blooming then planted it in a part sun / part shade area of a mulched garden bed. I was careful to mound it up a bit and kept the mulch away from the root crown. I watered it in and then when the soil felt dry. Unfortunately, that plant has failed to produce many leaves and the few leaves look puny. I purchased another native azalea (alabamense) but I’m anxious about planting it as I don’t want it to die (as the yellow bloomed one appears to be doing). Any tips for native azaleas? I’m quite keen to be successful with the Alabama azalea in my Alabama garden, zone 9a.

From experience, the tree watering rings only work on very level land. Also if you have to store bareroot plants, they last longer if you can refrigerate them. Otherwise, if you can't plant them where you ultimately want them, you can heel them in somewhere temporarily. Thanks for the helpful video.

First of all - THANK YOU to both Steph and you for all of your invaluable information. I found out from you that my weeping Yoshino Cherry tree would NOT get any taller! I HAD NO IDEA when I bought it. To top it off one of the main branches broke off and it now looks like it has wings. I have staked a new leader in an attempt to get more height. The new leader has grown about a foot. I have it secured to a stake. Will this new leader branch out and how do I control where it branches out so I can create the well rounded canopy this tree deserves? Do I need to prune the new leader, let it branch out and then start another new leader? This is Zone 8b in Georgia - about an hour SE of Athens, GA.. Again thank you for ANY advice you can give me on this. Keep up the great educational videos !

Pruning Question - I’ve inherited a large overgrown Summer Jasmine with our new house. It needs a hard pruning as it’s starting to damage the fence it’s climbed.
Apparently a prune down to 2ft above the ground in late summer/ Autumn is recommended, but could I hard prune sooner to kick start recovery over the growing season, so I don’t have to deal have a blank space for the entire autumn to spring?

Question about wood chips and pest problems. With all of the wood chips and mulch you have in the garden, do you ever have insect problems such as rollie pollies/pill bugs? If so, how do you control them? I have hardwood mulch, and the rollie pollies have resorted to eating my plants. I have signed up for chip drop but still waiting for a drop. I’m in Central Florida, Zone 9b/10. I recently moved to a new home and am planning to landscape near my drainfield. Other than boxwood and perennial flowers, I plan to plant Azalea due to their smaller, less aggressive roots.

Hi Jim, I'm entertaining the thought of expanding the privacy border I have across the width of my zone 9a Gulf coast backyard. Right now, there is a steel metal border defining the edge, but in no way does it confine my zoysia grass from growing into the bed. I really like the natural look of a trenched border which is usually 4-6 inches deep, but can you maintain the edge to keep out the zoysia grass? If so, what is the best way to maintain it? It is useless to try to pull the grass because it just breaks it off to form more grass and I desperately need a solution to keep the grass out of the bed. I plan to buy some 45% vinegar and carefully spray the grass being careful to keep it off the hedge plants. Do you think this can harm the roots of the established privacy plants?

I'm in South Carolina midlands zone 8B. I planted a bunch of alliums late fall/ early winter last year. The foliage came up in April and has almost all died back but no sign of flowers. I have looked at different sites for info but they just say things like.... They may not be planted deep enough ( They came with a list of how deep to plant them and I used a ruler), They may have gotten too much water (we are in a dry area that gets only a little rain), and I've even wondered about voles but we only have moles and they don't bother my flower beds. I'm at my widths end as to what might be wrong! Do you have any ideas? The soil is sandy loam and the bulbs are in full sun almost all day. I also added some bulbtone when I planted them.

Hello Jim, 3 weeks ago I repotted an Areca palm into what might be a way too large pot. 50/50 peat and shredded pine bark mix with lots of perlite as well. Had a tray beneath the pot and didn’t realize that it locked water inside, at least in the bottom of the pot. When I drained it out, the water was boggy and smelled a bit of gas. The tray is now gone and the pot drains very well, but can bacteria that causes root rot already have established it self?

Hi Jim, I have a question about cutting back oak leaf hydrangeas. I have had them for years and never trimmed. My problem is they are spreading into my other plants so I really just need to remove the spreading growth. Should I wait until the blooms die or can I go ahead and just remove that new growth?

Only if you care about flower buds on the parts you're cutting off. If you're just removing like 1/3 of the plant, the rest will still flower and probably better post pruning.

We live in Central Kentucky. We have two large (50 ft +) Kentucky Coffee tree’s that suddenly lost about 80% of their leaves. Lost them in about a week. I have contacted the local extension office and they are puzzled. The remaining leaves seem healthy although some do have small brown spots. I have read about spraying or fertilizing but how do you spray a tree this massive? The drip line diameter is probably at least 75 to 90 ft do fertilizing would be a massive undertaking. Any words of Tar Hill wisdom for the Bluegrass?

Perlite and a smaller pot are the antidote to peat mixes. Excellent potting mix just isn't cheap and cheap mix isn't going to give the same results. I've mixed my own when I couldn't get good bagged soil. As the industry exploded over the last few years, some things were consumed by the growers. I've also found that as a particular plant gets really popular, the quality of the material available can decrease as everybody is trying to tap into the market. Funny enough, same thing happened to popular dog breeds over my time. My neighbor had an installation about 4 years ago and one of her Abelia has 3 varieties growing in the same plant. Hoping the Kaleidoscope takes over as I've pruned back the Miss Lemon sport and the dark foliage sport. Horticulture is the same as other industries, not everyone is in it for the love of the plants. Thankfully, there's enough good growers if you look around. Thanks Jim and Stephanie.

Question: a few weeks ago, you showed your acanthus mollis in bloom. I bought one (‘Whitewater’ variety) but am now concerned about planting in my 7a/b Maryland garden. I read they can be quite aggressive with roots shooting up “babies” all over. Are you concerned? Should I be concerned?

I received a dozen very tiny bare root native trees (not sure exactly what kind) from the Arbor Day Foundation. When I say tiny, I mean like 18 inch sticks. I’ve planted them in one quart pots and most have sprouted tiny leaves already, but I’m not sure whether I should keep them in sun or shade. They’ve been in shade for the past 3 weeks. Would love to hear your thoughts. Maryland, 7b. Thanks!

You and Jay and others are growing our love of conifers! If we live in the Triangle area, which specimens should we stay away from because of conditions? You and Jay allude to conditions, but I'm still confused. I get that based on placement you can 'cheat' somewhat, but I don't have a big budget and I can't waste any resources. Also, where do you source them from? Homewood Nursery places Isle orders once a year. Any other suggestions? Thank you Jim and Steph!

Jim - when my daffodils flop and foliage start to turn brown (like right now), I generally go in and chop the leaves by about half to 2/3rds and they "disappear" in the beds and make room for the new plants in my small garden.
