Escazu is one of the most expensive places to live in Costa Rica. The traffic is always awful and the people there are next-level snobs. If you want good views, awesome food, friendly people, etc, I recommend any city in Costa Rica but Escazu. And locals? Ha! There are hardly any ticos living in Escazu. They know better. Escazu is great for a day of shopping, but you'll definitely want to stay in a different city if you come to this incredible country. Pura vida! ✌

In Costa Rica, we don't suggest using taxis. We suggest using Uber always to move around the city. The rest of the video was great, Pura vida! :)

I agree! Uber is bester than a cab. Use Uber and sit in the front passenger seat since technically Uber is illegal/ frowned upon.

Its like a tiny Santa Monica, Los Angeles for just a little below the prices I live in the low-end Bronx, NYC. Thanks for the info, seems like a soft place to land if your unsure of where to go when you’re used to walking or taking a Uber to a big chain store. It’s intriguing to me. Can always drive for a visit to more local and cheaper areas.

By raw numbers, Escazú might be even more expensive than your hometown, but your hometown most likely doesn't have all the perks that Escazú has, basically you can go hiking up to a mountain in the middle of nowhere, visit a volcano, visit a river and go to the beach all withing 4 hours in the same day while having hospitals, restaurants, shopping malls and night life at a walking distance from your house.
If you take into account all of that, Escazú would be rather cheap considering what the other expensive zones around the world can offer.

Escazu has the beast weather of any city on Earth. It’s a city with shopping malls, rush hour, lots of restaurants, and a few bars.
Escazu has the new hospital which is next to a hotel, mall, and upscale food court. It is busy with medical tourism for dental surgeries, cosmetic surgeries, and all emergency surgeries from accidents arriving at the heliport.
A guided tour from Escazu is $150 per per person. I recommend the rafting on the Pacuare river, which is about a 2 hour drive, each way, but they pick you at the airport hotels. The Costa Rica crocodile tour is on the pacific side, and is about a 90 minute drive, no bus service.

I had friends living near Escazu, the majority of the people living there are foreigners. After about 10 years of living in a gated community, they moved back to the States and currently live in Fort Lauderdale. Their house got robbed clean 3 times while there. The only thing the robbers left was the most expensive stuff, the artworks on the walls. All the furniture, computers, and other electronics were all gone. The modus operandi there is that the taxi drivers are usually friends with the guards that work the gate from your community. When you go on vacation, the guard lets the taxi drivers know there's an empty house in the community, the taxi driver lets his friends know, they show up with a truck, and clean up your place. They reported it to the police every time, the police wrote a report, and NEVER found anyone or any of their stuff.
As for the weather, the electric bill does not include you having AC during the hot unbearable months or the heater when it gets cold the other half of the year. So, double or triple that bill. The internet service is bad. I can't recall how many times we tried to talk over Skype or WhatsApp and got disconnected time and time again. Beware.
Those two who moved back to Fort Lauderdale cut their budget in half by doing so. They live a few miles from the beach and are super happy to be able to go on vacation and not having to worry if their condo going to be ransacked when they come back.
On the positive side, there are areas that are beautiful, it is very green. I would go there on vacation first and pay attention, almost every house has bars on the windows and doors. There's a reason for that. It is very unsightly.

Expexct to pay an arm and leg for electric. The key factor to know is you will pay less if you do not have air conditioning or a pool. If your intrested in a air con you will pay a high cost. Electricity in Costa Rica is not cheap which is ridiculous because its all renewable.
Escuzu is like your US suburb its pricey and similar to US. Branch out towards Cartago suburbs for a more local feel and lower cost.

    • @rachelrabb

@@esau82of course they have to maintain the system and pay the workers but thats not the point they make everything unreasonable. Ridiculous added taxes. Multiple service interruptions. Poorly maintained lines sometimes. Just ask the count less animals electrocuted because there not putting up enough power safety lines. Over grown trees by the lines..causing disturbance of power with simple low level wind. Higher electric costs during certain hours (recently implemented).....lets not forget the best part the will come CUT OFF your power if your one day late on a payment. Had it happen plenty times. Sorry couldn't shell out 500 dollars the cost of rent in pretty nice apartment here during pandemic. They cut off countless families who couldn't male paynents with children. There is no two month or one month before they turn off your power. It is 1 to 10 days depending when they get to you.
The problem is its monopoly with no competition in the market or the rates would be lower...its government company so competitors are not a thing. Trust me this country can all be solar if price panels were not absurd....
It is for profit here on electric with little regards
The water system is bit different according to different areas but each is called an asada thankfully most water is all supplied from fantastic natural resources. If your by river you can do your own water. But costs here for water are reasonable....even though system has flaws and has overcharged mistakenly families absured amounts on waterbill. Wich is an on going investigation

Go to Nicaragua. You get pretty much the same as CR and mich more. Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. That means we have the biggest lakes and islands along with the biggest volcanoes and Cathedral churches. Lots of beaches and English-speaking nicaraguans on the Caribbean coast. Top destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling found in Corn Islands. Worldwide famous naturalist painting movement found in Solentiname Islands. Activa lava lake in Volcan Masaya, a rarity worldwide. Colonial cities like León and Granada with lots of history. Nicaragua has been a top destination since California's gold rush in the 1850s. We have an established off-the-beaten-path for foreigners and Travellers alike. Remember, this is where the original Canal was supposed to be not in Panama. Bosawas is the largest rainforest outside the Amazons in the Americas. Nicaraguan laws make it so much easier to start a business and for expats and foreigners to have a job here. CR makes it nearly impossible for foreigners to work. Plus, nicaraguans love travelers and foreigners unlike many Costa Ricans. The difference between us and CR is we have similar standard of living for much, much cheaper. For $1,500 a month you live like a king! David Jones, Many foreigners move to Costa Rica specifically for good, affordable healthcare and Escazu is a very good choice. If close healthcare and shopping convenience are not a necessity, I agree, there are many other great options and all will likely be cheaper. What are your favorite places?

Like your videos but I think you guys should be more honest with the public...Costa Rica is undoubtedly a beautiful country but not always very friendly... My daughter went on a spring break vacation with a group of friends. They went to a restaurant for dinner and a local thru an empty bottle of beer at the group. The bottle hit one of the girls. They went to the local police station to make a report. The following morning the guy was out of jail...The police had an "us vs them" mentality. Gringos are not exactly well received all the time.

@Bernadette Shiels I am sorry to hear that. I have never had something happen like that in CR but of course, people treat men differently. Where did this happen?

It doesn't seems to has anything to do with been gringos. Even if the victims were costarican the guy wouldn't be in jail for something like that more than that.
Often americans are dificult, some even can get mad just because somebody working doesn't speak english (not turism relate) and other rude stuff but if you are nice and have manners, most of the people wouldn't have any problem with you.

Multiplaza is not even close to be the best mall in the country, what about city mall? What about Oxygeno, and there's a lot of verter malls allá around the country! You should go to see it

Multiplaza is the nicest one overall and most upscale stores but not the best for shopping or eating. Oxígeno has the best architecture rooftop garden and views and jogging track, City Mall the most stores and Mall San Pedro the best food court and hobbyists stores.

Interesting but your place name pronunciation is almost painful..... Don’t worry most Americans do by lengthening vowels... if you take a Spanish course you’ll learn how to shorten vowels (I lived there for 8 years)
