My sense is that you are very honest and upfront about the products you use, what has been sent to you, what you have bought yourself, and I for one don't question your honesty and integrity when it comes to "product placements" in your vids. This was a great video and I have several Honda small engines and there was more here than I usually do each year, so thanks for this vid.

I have used 89 octane with a stabilizer in my small engines for years and I’ve stored them full for years. if i feel like its been in there too long i just pump it out and put it in my car. Never had any problems. I prefer a full tank because my understanding is it prevents condensation from building in the tank.

Well done sir! If you have the bowl off and you're worried about a partially clogged jet / emulsion tube, squirt carb cleaner up from below with the straw.
ALWAYS start screwing in the spark plug by hand, the valve covers usually throw your spark plug socket alignment off.
For larger (running) engines that are hard to pull start. Pull them over slowly a couple of times, stop when you feel the compression building. Let the rope rewind then give a nice fast yank.

100 mile round trip for me to find non-ethanol fuel. A small motor mechanic I’ve met says put fuel stabilizer in the fuel, Run the engine once a month and change the fuel out before next season. In the past I’ve always drained the fuel and run it dry. Interestingly it’s a log splitter with a Honda GX motor that didn’t like that. I’ve learned how to take apart and clean Honda carburetors. In fact my son called me with a problem with a small Honda 4 stroke outboard. I talked him through it even though I’ve never worked on a Honda outboard. He sent me a video of it running. I have an old (60s vintage) forestry service fire pump with a big single cylinder Briggs engine. It has a down draft carburetor. I always drain the fuel and run it dry. It started 1st pull when the Wolsey fire hit us. Love that old pump.

The rubber insert is actually to protect the ceramic coating on the outside of the spark plug lol. Holding it better is just one of the upsides of it. And you can also buy spark plug testers for a couple bucks to help you see the spark better

Great video. First thing we did in Tech school was to make a spark plug install tool, guarantees you’ll never cross thread a spark plug. A 4” piece of rubber vacuum line with a golf tee in one end. Put the vacuum line on the spark plug and start it into the head. Pretty handy and teaches you to be careful installing plugs, not to cross thread them. I still have it in my box to this day.

Excellent Video! If you can't or don't want to remove that jet, gently push a wood toothpick into the hole and spin it. That valve cover does have a built in PCV valve, it's a one way valve that lets out crankcase pressure. Vented to clean side of air filter so dirt can't work its way into engine. Finally- last resort use starting fluid (as a tool) to get it running, esp if you suspect old gas. Water does condense from the air in metal tanks and gas cans over time, esp ethanol fuels. When tank is full of fuel there is less air- so less water. FInally that foam air (pre-cleaner) is designed to be washed in warm soapy water (Dawn is best) let it dry and put clean motor oil on it, then squeeze all excess oil from it. Your $20 paper filter will last a LONG time if we catch most of the dirt in that oil.

You didn't need to but since you could not get the jet out, I have had good luck shooting carb cleaner through the jet with the carb attached to the motor. I live in a state where you cannot get gasoline without ethanol. I have had to resort to buying very expensive cans of Trufuel at Home Depot, Lowes...
    Great video, thanks.

You mentioned the more power puller. I bought one after seeing your video. I had seen them before used for about $35. Well, after I broke my come a long (for the second time ), I couldn't find a used one so I paid a lot of money for a new one. It's been worth it. Everything is heavy. Also, I watched this video because I need to go get my 3 inch pump ready and it has a Honda engine. I have to admit, I'm not a Honda fan. But it was all that I could afford after my 3 inch pump, with a Briggs, got stolen. I guess lunch break is over. Off to my second job. Hopefully, this Honda will start.

I switched to aviation fuel. I was using 100LL which is a low lead fuel, but switched to 94UL by Swift Fuels. Both are ethanol free and have a 2 year shelf life. 94 UL is an unleaded, the same formula as the 100LL , but no lead. I run all Honda equipment and have had no issues with the fuel. It also smokes less and has less of a gasoline smell.

I guess I'm a little bit old school, but I still always check my spark plug gaps, and rarely find them gapped as recommended by the engine manufacturer. - A previous DIY video of yours was how I originally found your channel, something chainsaw related. I was instantly a fan, based on your style and clear explanation. You do a great job. TH-cam has helped me with many DIY (and therefore money-saving) projects, from automotive and equipment to around the home. This to me, is where TH-cam shines.

  • @bbond302

I always check every single new spark plug. Couldnt tell you how many new plugs I've found out of gap. Usually someone at he parts store dropped it at some point before sale. In my mind its quick, easy insurance. A little dab of Dielectric grease on the ignition wire is always great too. Prevent the wire from getting stuck onto the plug and breaking when you need to change it next.

Not getting that jet out could be a BIG mistake. I once fought an engine for months until I took the jet out and found out it was PARTIALLY blocked. The engine would run, but had no power. When I finally cleaned the jet properly with a tiny drill bit, (not compressed air) it solved the problem. Lesson learned.

One more great tip- Those Honda GX engines still have the old fashioned starter thing under that recoil assembly. If the recoil fails, remove it. Wrap the rope or any rope around that metal cup. Need a knot in end of rope to put in the notch. If you pull that rope hard all the way to the end, you are "asking" it to break.

Just found this from a petrochemical guy:
"Ethanol is mainly obtained from sugar industry which is a by-product of sugarcane molasses. Ethanol blending reduces carbon monoxide and carbon-dioxide emissions up-to 30%, cleans the car engine and dirt from pipes and chambers. It also acts as anti-knocking agent results in decreasing engine knocking (without using lead). Comparing with petrol, ethanol burns cleaner and completely. 5% of ethanol blending replaces a large amount of crude oil"
So it does have legitimate reason to be there.

Applying some heat to the carburetor will help get the jets out if you need to, boiling water is a good option if fuel makes a torch too risky. Also cooling quickly with carb spray will sometimes shock the metal into releasing, of course shocking with a hammer can sometimes work too but you have to be delicate

Those red & white Honda's are tough long lasting engines ! We have one on a power washer that's 30 years old . Only repair I've made to it is had to braze up a rust hole in the bottom of the fuel tank . Other than that just change oil .

What i normally do with an engine that wont start is take the airfilter off and spray wd40 in the intake then pull it over. If it starts up and then cuts out you know its a carb issue. If it runs fine its probably the airfilter. That dont fix it? I attack the spark plug. She dirty? I clean it. She still no fart? I check for spark. If nothing else works then i go a bit more in depth and go after more serious things like compression and bad ignition coils. Ive also had flywheel magnets lose magnetism. Once or twice saw headgaskets blow. The very odd time ive seen valves not seating and piston rings worn out. A scored or cracked cylinder will do the same. Both of my lawnmowers are 33 and 29 years old respectively and still original bar consumables. Most of the time in the 29 year old one its a fouled plug cos its got over 1000 hours on it and burns oil. 2 stroke engines are a bit different. Air leaks will kill any 2 stroke of any brand

You can see that the old oil was also contaminated, probably with excess fuel. Thin and runny, and probably smells strongly of fuel as well.
I do like that fuel pump, though I use siphons instead, and have made my own from PVC pipe fittings and bits of old carburettor service kits to make the check valve. Wanted large bore valve, so used 32mm fittings to make a housing and a flap from the diaphragm riveted into the edge of the one piece as the valve.

Cody, I think you need to pull the carburetor on that engine and give it a good cleaning, specifically the jet and emulsion tube. Honda's as a rule start much easier, usually on the second pull. The holes in the emulsion tube being plugged up will cause hard starting and a cold blooded engine.

If you're storing your engine for a season or so, you're better off leaving the engine full of fuel and treated with fuel stabilizer. The small amount of fumes left from draining the carb can wreak a lot more havoc than gas. The blue sta-bill works awesome

Ethanol in gas... Until just recently we had Ethanol free gas here in Japan. Now I have to by it in tins to get gas without ethanol.
    Cheers from Tokyo!

The Tokyo Craftsman Pretty much the same drill here in California. I buy 2-cycle, premixed 40:1 or 50:1 gas that’s non-ethanol as well. Very expensive but worth the price if it keeps the engine running.

FYI - most modern spark plug companies recommend AGAINST using any type of anti seize. It can act as a slight lubricant, and can alter torque values when tightening. Or at least might allow you to tighten more than you would be able to without it. This can damage threads and actually cause more harm than good. Modern spark plugs don't really have an issue with seizing as long as you don't over tighten.

This is why I watch this channel. I learn so MUCH! Question - would it work to put Evapo-Rust in the gas tank overnight work to get rid of the rust, like for rusty tools? Or is there too much of a problem with gas and Evapo-Rust not playing well together (even if you completely wipe out the gas tank with drying rags before adding gas)?

Steel fuel tank cleaning trick...add some clean fuel and a couple feet of clean chain. Shake tank until all debris and rust has been abraded into the fuel then drain. Obviously remove pump, level sensor etc if present.

Gapping sparkplugs i guess was more important with carburetors than with injection.. Or simply the production is more precise today.

You can also purchase a gas shutoff valve for small engines at most hardware stores and shut the fuel off to the carburetor and let it run out of fuel and they are dirt cheap
