  • Minilogue's studio is surrounded by serene nature outside of Malmö, Sweden. It's here that Sebastian Mullaert and Markus Henriksson compose their lush, evolving techno suites with a variety of hardware and software - with Live at the center of each musician's setup. In the video below, Sebastian gives us an overview of Minilogue's technology.

I'm going to be honest, I didn't know minilogue was also a band. I kept waiting for them to showcase the Korg Minilogue and how to control it in Live using the mixer midi CC. That is a BOSS settup though. Will look up more of this band :)

Thanks for that. This looks like a very musically intelligent setup, and what we hear of your music on this video has a lightness and aliveness that I rarely hear in sequenced electronic music.

This kind of music has to sound like it just "happens".
I don't want to hear some pretentious virtuoso showing off what great creative guy he is. I want to hear something that is so well-thought and sensitively prepared that it sounds like an acoustic garden with splendid colorful plants in it, growing and flourishing.
This is exactly what Minilogue does, and having seen this vid, I can better understand what kind of preparation is needed to make something that sounds as natural as this music.
Minimal isn't about *showing* skills and ideas, it's about creating a magic atmosphere. If you cant't feel it, let go. But you might be able to accept that people who like and know this kind of sound think Minilogue to be amongst the best of all times.

Fortunately the quality of a music piece is not proportional to the means used to create it... Art is not technologie but feelings. That's why no machine can make art by itself, feelings are only create by human beings. (for art, else I'm sure some animals have feelings too).
Most beautiful pieces of Bach can often be played with 2 fingers. He used to say, "music is easy, you just have to push the right key at the right moment" :-) All the problem is to chose the right key and the right moment ! And for that, no matter the size and number of your synths...

This is a comment and not a criticism.
This seems to me like a $100,000 race car that goes around a track that a $1500 bicycle can do.
Maybe there’s a satisfaction in the complexity of the machinery. I don’t know. Maybe GAS.
I respect any artists music and I respect the way they feel they need to get there.
It’s hard for me to be thinking about gadgets and feeling the music at the same time.
I’d rather spend the time learning technique on the guitar or keyboard than troubleshooting electronic gear. This video served a great purpose as I build my studio. To keep my setup very simple and easy to understand. Then I can be free to concentrate on my instrument.
Thank you for helping me clear that up. :-)

This isn't really that complicated, it's just lots of individual components they've built up over a long period of time - it's a very custom instrument that they've built to make a particular type of music. Sure he could just play a piano but that would sounds totally different. In fact the whole point of the way they're working is that when they're actually making music, they don't have to think about the technology.

I'm currently in the process of constructing my live set and this was a great help. I make different sort of music however. One concern I have with this set up (and a lot of electronic music, including my own) is how much we rely on samples we created before hand. I'm trying to consciously bring in a more improvisational nature (i'm a multi instrumentalist) to my live set up but it's a long journey no doubt. Given that, does anyone have any useful information/videos/tips please? Thank you :)

Amazing setup, gear and sounds. These guys seem to really know how to get into the creative flow together. There's one thing that I didn't quite get though. At the beginning he says their computers are not synced but they are beatmatching. My guess would be that they are running the final stereo mix through traktor, splitting the mix into two separate channels and then reuniting them once beatmatched, but as I said that's just me guessing. Anybody have any clue about what they are actually doing?

Outstanding music and setup. Major ups to you guys. Here's my question... after sending all this music around to all these controllers and stomp pads and craziness, how does it look when you're doing a professional recording back in ableton? What do you use for recording? I'm looking to use Ableton software and external controllers because I'm more of an external guy too, but what will it BE when it comes back into the computer? Obviously, others might want to remix your work, so you need a sound separated ableton file right? Someone please elaborate, I'm very interested in this

What makes me wonder is...How is their mono/stereo balance done with the guitar pedals? You can clearly see that for example the Carl Martin EQ has mono in, mono out. The signal going in the chain is stereo.. same for the output of the chain. Obvious answer: mono summing before the chain. But that would mean also a bit of phase cancellation. Anyone got an idea?

    • @Mr_ToR
      @Mr_ToR 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Boy Bianchi the only stereo source you (might) have is from loops. all other sources are mono. ableton utility plugin is great for mono/stereo/phasing/spreading/channel copying etc needs. it's really an amazing utility.
