Here are some tips and tricks for sports photography. I take you through my culling process, or how I edit down my images to the best of the best with honors sir, or the keepers. I give some tips and tricks for sports photography along the way. Remember, photography doesn't end when you press the button, you still need to cull and edit.
I also share some tips on selecting the proper shutter speed, f stop and ISO.

Photographing my kids' teammates is literally what got me into paid gigs. Just those little things has brought me so many clients from grads and Seniors to sports portraits.
Exactly. You don’t have to get paid for every gig as certain gigs will lead to getting paid.
That was kick ass when he mentioned that because that’s a great way to practice filling your frame with the subject… and not just spray & pray!

@rmika9229 it was portraits of one of the players. One of the parents asked if I could do it and how much. I charged them $200 and delivered 5 photos. That led to doing some Senior portraits and on and on. My rates adjusted as I grew confidence and speed but keep in mind that I took alot for free before I ever charged. You took the right step by getting good glass. I wasn't the only parent at the field taking photos, but the fact that I had professional gear made me stand out from the others.

Took photos of my daughter’s volleyball team this season. Gave the parents free access to all of the photos of all the kids. Helped me improve and was a great way to give back to the team that worked so hard all season.

@@TonyBeauford I’ve got a Canon R6 Mii and use either a 24-70 2.8 or my buddies 70-200 2.8. Typically I’m close enough that the 24-70 is enough.
I'm shooting my daughter's softball team this season. Primarily using my Z6 with the 70-200 2.8 in shutter priority mode. It's really good practice.
I took 3300 photos this weekend at a CMRA club racing event and going through them has been a total pain. This is exactly what I needed.
Love it. Jared went old school video on us with the exposure chalkboard. Haven’t seen that since the 2010s.

6:50 mark. Seems spot on. I shoot with Sony A7R III with the Sony 70-300 f4.5-5.6 and usually at the 200-300mm length at f5.0 or f5.6 and that's usually what I shoot at. Between 1/1000sec and 1/1600sec depending on lighting and where my ISO is at which is usually between 100 and 400.
Oh and my son plays soccer.

Great video! Will you make a video explaining downgrading, putting in desktop folders and lightroom folder, and backing up? so basically file management. Ive had a hard time getting my head around how to store my photos in a simple but effective way.

Photo mechanic is great and fast culling tool before moving into ligbtroom, i do crop most images just to level horizons and tweek the position in the frame, i dont like cropping in alot due to loss of pixels. I use a pair of canon 1dx iii , 400mm f2.8 ii and 70 200 f2.8. Shooting rugby in the UK . I think getting lower, sitting on a stool gets better pospective in sports as well. Nice video to show not ever image if great, even for experience professionals. I do use auto iso, light changes a lot in UK and Dslr vs Mirrorless i dont see the live exposure in view finder as mirrorless does. Keep up the great content.

I did a hockey festival shoot "my first sport shoot" with a Nikon D750 & 24-300 f/3.5-5.6 + 70-200 f2.8. I shot mostly at 1/2000 F4 or 5.6 on the 300mm using Auto ISO with a max IOS set to 6400. It was quite a sunny day but was shooting from various angles so there were quite a few changes in light. Managed to get some good shots, especially on the faster 70-200 f2.8. My first day I ended up with over 1600 shot lol, the next day a bit less and over the weekend got a good idea of what to try and capture. Really fell in love with the sports photography but still have a bit to learn in terms of framing and getting the right shots. I ended up doing allot of cropping. These were just for social media so wasn't too big of a deal.

Great Video, Best of the Best, with Honors, Sir! I've been shooting High School, College, and, Peewee sports for more than 20 years. It's nice to see that I'm on point w/ process. What I've found however, is that athletes and their families don't want JUST the best of the best, with honors! They want ALL of them! So, when editing, I cull the out of focus, player in the way ones, just a bad picture, and share the rest with a Google Album link with EVERYONE, including opposing coaches. Sometimes, without meaning to, as plays develop, you end up with some really great shots of the opposing team.... It's about the kids. Keep doing what you're doing Jared, there's a lot of us out here, who appreciate your work

A big thing I've had to learn and beat into my own head is that when it comes to sports as well as concerts is that they are STILL PHOTOS. A moment of action - say, a QB releasing a throw or a guitarist stepping up for a solo - it doesn't matter if the pass was incomplete or the solo was just a filler-riff. It's a frozen moment, and no one will see the next frame or hear what's being played.
It's not easy, because you think "Oh, that's not going to work, he got sacked on that play" or "Oh, this is their number one hit, I HAVE to get the shot!" It's doesn't matter if the shot is there.
The same techniques can also be applied to Concert Photography, especially when photographing the entire show. I'll often pare down to the best plus enough other images to tell the whole story.
The thing about photographing events like concerts is that you never know who will be famous in the future. Maybe you're taking a thousand shots at a concert and you only ever see fit to publish a handful. Then the band or artist goes platinum and everyone wants to see EVERY photo you ever took, even if they're awful. I'll admit I'm no different. I like looking at photos of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, I don't care if it's a mediocre photo.
I'd love to see the photos of Perry Farrell that Jared hasn't shown us.

Jared, thanks for this video! Long time viewer, first time commenter (from Philly). I am a an amature photog for the fun of it, but also to challenge myself to consistently learn and improve each time I pick up the camera.
I appreciate your call to not crop and it hit home with me this video. I like to shoot my kids' soccer games and realized after your video yesterday that I crop or at least horizon straighten over 90% of my shots. The AHA moment for me in your challenge isn't so much about getting top resolution, it's about learning to "see" in camera all of the things I'd normally handle in post instead of only focusing on my main subject. Horizons, limbs being chopped off, extraneous characters in the shot, ice cream trucks in the background... Thanks for pushing us to focus on composition when it's easier to spray and pray. Next week, I'm going to try to get my crops down under 50%!
I also enjoy giving back to the other parents on the team for free BTW. There's definitely room for both free and paid on the field, but IMHO, many of the paid in youth sports leagues need to start putting in a little more creativity than the "one foot up on the ball" shot for $35. I'd rather pay for the action hero shot. Kudos to all out there doing better!

Very valuable for us dads/grandads. I usually make an album and save the qr link on my phone and the parents and others access their kids pix there. Great Video. I shoot grandsons flag football every week. Give link to all pictures to everyone, originals, free downloads etc. They love seeing kids in action frozen in thousands of a sec. I purposely shoot around f9, more parents happy seeing more kids in focus. Yes I use Auto Iso and occasionally crop. Thanks.

I shoot High School football games at 7PM every week in the fall so the sun is down. I need a video to help me out with that. Shooting with a 2.8 lens is the only tip that I know.

Jared, your thoughts of shooting full frame reminds me when we shot Kodachrome... As you couldn't crop after the shot. Yes for the digital world that is film. Most young shooters these days spray and pray. Then do a lot of post production. If they learn to make their shots in the camera, they would be better shooters all around...
Roller Derby photographer here. Could you do one that deals with indoor light? I learn as I go, but could use a boost... especially since over the weekend I went from 7dmkii to an R6mkii. Dealing with roller rink lights or sports facilities with crappy lights/windows/red sports court floor is a lot different than dealing with sunsine and green grass.

I just wonder, why not Photo Mechanic for your organization and curling process? I do noticed that Lightroom works very well for you, but Photo Mechanic is another level. I know it depends of every photographer needs, but I just wonder why not for you.

Agreed. I don't take 400 photos at an event. I take more like 4000-10000 depending on the event (over a weekend). LOL Photo Mechanic is the best way to cull for keepers no matter the volume. Also - I respect Jared's preference to set iso manually but, for me, I get more keepers using auto iso. I don't consider iso a creative setting (like SS and aperture) and lighting often changes at a moment's notice. It's one thing to shoot a kid running - quite another to shoot a superbike at triple digit speeds. LOL They can move from sun to shade in a blink of an eye.

I need help with proper camera settings for outdoor sports photography with the canon R6II on rf70-200 2.8
I shoot lots of youth competitive soccer. Similar process. But I shoot all 15 members of the team so a lot more volume to sort. I have a preset for the raw files, and do crop many photos for centering or distracting foreground. 60 to 120 photos per week, so not too bad. My preset is pretty minmal like yours. A little clarity, a little vibrance, and my preferred sharpening and denoise (if necessary).
Awesome Jared. I was shooting flag football here in Puerto Rico this past weekend. I have a canon R5 with a ef 70-200 2.8 with adapter. One question did you use the mechanical shutter or electronic? On my first game I used the electronic shutter and finish with over 800 shoots je je je je . Long time subscriber keep it up.
Use mechanical when you making action photos. If u choose electronic you may end up with photos stretched out like jelly

11:30 mark I agree completly and did this at all my son's soccer games. We usually swapped photos in an app like GroupMe or TeamSnap that all the coaches where using.
Your "do not crop" (ok... you don't say exactly that) is my pain in the neck. I'm used to crop but the effect is exactly what you said in the video, I end up keeping too many pictures (since I can "recover" them) and let go the in camera work/challenge
When I am taking dirt track racing photos, at times when I’m panning , I’ll start away from the sun and pan toward the sun and then my picture gets blown out , but it’s good when I snap the pic before I get to that area so it’s hard , I’ve tried auto iso but that doesn’t work either, thanks
With sports photos like this, in the middle of the day with bright light. Are you dialing the setting in to be right at -/+0 or are you looking to over or under expose?

Jared, good in sight on sports compositions. What if you were shooting with the R7? Is it capable of getting these shots, and would they look this good? Would the rolling shutter issues compromise the shots?
The rolling shutter on the R7 is substantial, so keep it in manual shutter for action. Sorry. I learned the hard way with wildlife and my R7.

@@pmack8515 I was shooting wildlife and a bird was flapping its wings. I don't recall my settings except that I was using electronic shutter and a high shutter speed.

A great video. One question though. Do you delete all the photos that you reject?
I keep every photo that I take. The only time I would ever delete some thing thing is if it was a completely blank image.
I do. Delete them as I’m never coming back to them
I keep for a few months then go back and delete the ones never edited/exported. It saves hard drive space on my smaller PC.

Secondly, I notice a lot of you here mentioning that you also photograph your family youngsters, but I can see that if adults at the games believe your professional photographers, it may not bother them, but I'm struggling to feel comfortable about shooting my niece with other children about. I'm in the UK and our rules and guide lines might be different, so please help me get around this uncomfortable feeling that I'm being watched all the time and if you could give me some suggestions, I'd be really greatful.

400mm f/2.8 is an awesome lens (and mega $$$), but this seems like a situation where I would rather be out with a 100-400 or similar and have the flexibility to pull back to 300 when the players are closer to me.
thanks for the great info. It always seems to be a chore going through all the pictures after a game. Skittles is by far my favorite preset for my daughters soccer games.

They will only work in Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom Mobile, Photoshop and Camera Raw. I don't believe Elements supports adobe presets (just profiles) although it has Camera Raw
Does Global Shutter means HDR photos? 3 exposures meant 3 pictures with a rolling shutter. Will a global shutter be able to clip 3 exposures at once? Allowing for instant HDR, perhaps even no post-editing required!? 😮
Sure the ISO and aperture will have to remain the same but could clip on shutter speed!
Could produce 3 pictures as well at once or generate a type of file that has 2 more added layers of light, thus allowing more flexible editing!
I'd call them L-RAW where L stands for layered 😮
I have been using Lightroom for like 10+ years and I had no idea that “previous” applied the previous settings. I have been copying and pasting settings this whole time. 🤯
I don't shoot sports, but regarding filling the frame, the desire to get it right SOOC is great, but if you can't afford long glass and/or cannot get closer to the action, you may not have a choice but to crop. Also, shooting tight you can also run into the issue of unintentionally cutting off limbs and such. As for losing pixels, I personally have had a lot of success with Topaz products, but given most people view content on a phone or computer screen these days, the need for pixel peeping resolution is not very high.
Not every photo I take is filling the frame with the subject. Anybody that follows my work understands I talk about the wise the medium is the tights in the details.

If you haven’t purchased all 4 FROpacks, you’re wasting time editing. The best place to start with all of your photos is a FROpack. AND, when you’re just out somewhere with your friends and only have a phone, you can take shots and immediately slap a Skittles or Cinnamon Toast Crunch onto them. share those with the friends you’re with and they are blown away and ask, “why don’t my pictures look like this?” You can just respond, “photographer!” And then later tell them where they can get the FROpacks. That’s what I do! HAVE FUN!!!
What FroPack Preset do you like for ice Hockey?
Like I said in this video, I like ones that are realistic. But with indoor sports and hockey, you’re gonna need to tweak after you click the preset because if the highlights are pulled all the way back, the ice is gonna look bad so I moved the highlights back to the middle.

Why are you shooting vertically the entire time?
You should do a video where you're at 1/1000th | f2.8 | ISO25600 -- that'd be more interesting. Show some ways to claw back some ISO by anticipating pauses in the action on the field -- ways to set up your camera to momentarily drop your SS when those moments happen, etc.
Thanks for the tutorial. Still seems too ideological not to crop, esp with these distracting youth sports backgrounds. Different strokes for different folks i guess.
Tell your nephew to keep his eyes on the hips of the QB. He won’t get “juked out of his pants” as much! You’ll get loads more flag pull shots.

I know you didn't ask for it, but I have one critique of the photos. You have your Nephew too much to the center of photos which doesn't leave much room for the other players.
I've always vehemently disagreed with your no-cropping stance, Jared. Its wild that you insist on not cropping, yet youre fine with every other type of edit. Cropping is just part of editing! It doesnt mean you are superior if you get it tight in camera or need to crop slightly afterwards. All that matters is the final product.
It seems to me that this is a temporary phenomenon and love for the ideal, even if the uncut result is not good enough. You're just proud of yourself for not cutting anything off.
He talks about filling the frame, that you need to fill the frame and not crop it for a certain result, but at the same time there are a lot of unnecessary elements in the frame that create some confusion and distract from the main thing, preventing the eye from catching the key moment. It seems that the guy in the frame has an interesting amplitude of movement, but at the same time there are several backs of other guys in the frame that overlap the main character of the photo, and this amplitude no longer becomes important because it is hard to see.
I choose not to crop, I suggest people challenge themselves to see if they can get their composition the way the envisioned it in the camera. I'm not changing how I personally shoot, you do you, why tell me I'm wrong, who are you...I'm Photo Jesus according to some negative comments.
Cropping is not part of my editing. It might be part of your editing, but not mine. I have 4 feet by 6 feet prints on my wall from 12 megapixel DSLR's, that if you cropped 50% would never hold up. I choose not to crop, my choice. You do you.
@@froknowsphoto Of course it is your choice, no one is imposing their opinion on you. It’s just that the technique of filling the frame does not always work on the frame itself, how it looks to a third party, and sometimes this technique only makes it worse because it is not always possible to fill the frame evenly. At the end of the video there was a great shot when one guy tried to take the flag from another but the frame sagged very much on the right, there was just an empty area that spoiled a great shot and why not just remove this emptiness?
@@froknowsphoto I generally try to not crop for the most part, especially "extreme" crops, but to clean up a border or to center someone a little more which might not have been in my control at the time, I just dont understand why you choose to eliminate that as a tool in your arsenal, even as a minor adjustment. Do you ever straighten horizons in post? Do you consider THAT action a crop? I appreciate your talents as a photographer, Jared, I am not shitting on your skills whatsoever, just not understanding/agreeing with your take on cropping, and thats okay. Long time subscriber, BTW. I'd like to see you shoot sports with a cheap apsc canon dslr + cheap 70-300 lens. Don't tell me gear doesnt make a difference.
It makes a difference, sure. But you can still get decent shots with older/cheaper gear. Compose & Expose.

Not many "tips and tricks" for "sports photography"......... careful when choosing video titles.
I understand why Jared doesn't shoot auto ISO, but as someone who mainly shoots sports, I just completely disagree with it. Shooting on high school fields that have inconstant lighting, shooting auto is just one less thing you need to be worried about when there are 100 things going on a the same time.
***Also side note as I continue watching the video.. PLEASE do not give pictures away for free. It's hard enough to make people understand why we "charge so much to click a button" for 10 photos, when HOURS of travel, shooting time, and editing goes into getting those 10 photos. When people give professional photos away for free, it makes this battle even harder.
I highly recommend people don’t use auto ISO. In my experience using it it hasn’t been accurate enough compared to what I’m capable of doing. Plus the light isn’t changing that much at any field at one time to warrant needing to go into auto ISO. If it’s a bright sunny day and there’s no clouds the lights gonna be exactly the same the whole time why allow for the ISO to change at all. if tonight came under the lights, the lights aren’t gonna change at all. It’s gonna be the same lighting the same settings the whole time no reason to be an auto.
In terms of giving stuff away, there’s a lot of photographers or people who like taking pictures and enjoy giving pictures to their kids, friends or their teammates. There’s nothing wrong with that. You don’t always need to sell everything and sometimes people aren’t gonna buy your stuff anyway. Sometimes it opens doors to get paid in other ways. I am not gonna go out and take pictures of my niece and nephews games , and try to sell pictures to their friends if they asked me to take pictures I’m gonna give them pictures because I can and it’s not taking a job away from someone else in my opinion
@@froknowsphoto Actually... I shoot a lot of motorsports and they often will be at night when the lights come on. Unfortunately, those lights don't cover the whole track evenly at all. I will shoot wide open and like to adjust my shutter speed manually based on what I want (panning or freeze the action). Sometimes I'm in the dark side of the track and sometimes the light side... I feel auto iso is my best option for that level of flexbility.
When I cover my kids wrestling matches, I get the other wrestlers as well and will share them with everyone for free. The lighting is mostly the same so most edits are very similiar. It's not like you're doing extensive editing to each image. He just did this in about 20 min, not "HOURS." Like he said in the video, it can lead to other paid work and has for me several times.
We shoot youth sports all over the country, we train brand new photographers to use auto ISO as a cutch until they learn, then they typically move onto manual and away from auto ISO. After 14 years of doing this its almost rinse and repeat.
@@froknowsphoto Hey Jared, I'm a ft sports photog as well and I have to also disagree on auto-iso. While it's not ideal and it won't always be perfect - and i'll generally be either turning off matrix face metering in the z9, or using ec with dark backgrounds or certain uniforms, it's impossible to use full manual in a lot of games. The example that readily comes to mind is any HS football field at night, which will have (generally) four large light poles that light the 25th probably a stop or two brighter than midfield. And yes, while you can ride iso on your own, the speed at which the game moves makes that impossible e.g. is it a run or a throw? I may have to swing 30 yards downfield in less than a second where the lighting situation is entirely different. This happens every game, guaranteed - during kickoff and punts, among other plays. There are situations where keeping a steady exposure is preferable, of course, and that's generally the case inside with basketball or volleyball. So my advice would be simple - learn which function fits which situation. There is no right answer for every location.
Sports photography is only if you have kids playing a sport. Beyond that, there's no reason for it.
