Thank you!!!!!! Your knowledge of the subject makes it simple for a guy like me who wants to learn!! Can not tell you in words how much I appreciated your time in this and all your videos!! Grattitudes!!
WARNING this video is not for those with ADD / ADHD!!! My attention deficit radar is going off the charts. Dog in the background, dog shaking in the background many many times, Eli on one monitor moving, Eli on the other monitor moving, strange four monitor setup that is not running in the background why?, low light hard to see Eli and whiteboard why?, Eli starring at Ubuntu loading back and fourth near the end. Good thing I love your videos cause man it was tough watching this one! Still love what your doing and I appreciate your efforts here! On the professional side I have two Dell hosts and an EMC SAN that a third party helped me setup. I was trying to understand the ESXi side of things and your explanation was great. Standing up a new server is as easy as Eli demonstrates.
Hello Eli , Nice video about ESXi , that is the first Vsoftware that I started with , I find it very easy to use also keep doing this great job I learned a lot from you in the last 6 months . I started with no experience 6-7 months ago , only with my passion for computers the only think I knew was the hardware part / build personal computers. Now I`m working for an company as a junior sysadmin, your videos about linux and networking helped me a lot ( I can shell script now and do net-wiring )
I thought I was being hacked hearing strange sounds so I stopped the video and no more strange sounds. All the time it was Fido making the sounds, nice!
3) Eli is using this as an example, he could be installing Windows NT 4. He chose it as an example for the sake of simplicity for the video, give the guy a break. This is an excellent introduction to Hypervisors (Thanks Eli) and something that I have been looking for, for a while. I'm going to ramp up my PC from 12GB of RAM to 24 and whack in a couple of new harddrives on RAID so that I can practice this video. You ROCK dude!
Excellent. Well done. Being familiar with Type 2 Virtualization concepts this was perfect for me before plunging into Type 1 concepts. This will be a tremendous help to me to prepare for at the job VMWare initiatives. Thanks again.
Excellent Eli! Would appreciate if you could share some more videos regarding Basics of Bare Metal and Versions of ESXI as it will really help me as I have just started
muhsina , its about the Virtual machines . Instead of using physical servers , we can use this virtual machine to create multiple virtual instance which works like physical servers .
Not that I was waiting for it, as this is just the initial handling for the setup … but having to watch you bringing up the setup screen with F2 on your notebook that rests on your left arm ? No, thank you !
VMware's version of VDI uses ESXi on the back end. This is what I do for a living. (It's a good living.) I started virtualizing servers with ESX 2.54 and have worked with VI3 and then vSphere 4 and now vSphere 5. VMware View is the manager and broker for virtual desktops. Keep in mind the free version of ESXi does not include the APIs or functionality for control through vCenter, nor advanced features such as HA, vMotion, Storage vMotion, DRS, etc.
hey eli great lesson. i have been hearing allot about the raspberry pi, and i think it would be great if you made a couple videos about uses, tips and set up. thanks allot.
I just wanted to point out that when he refers to vSphere as the management software he is talking about vCenter Server. vSphere is the product suite, vCenter is what manages the ESX/ESXi hosts.
WOW Thanks for that local DVD driveTIP!!! Its kind of a pain trying to get the right virtual drive configured on the Vcenter host. This is much easier! I love virtual drives though! Good old days of free Daemon Tools then pay for Daemon Tools then spam filled Daemon Tools!
somethings I don't get: 1) you install vshpere on your main computer ? 2) the esxi must be installed on a different computer to act as a independent server? 3) following 1 and 2 , the instances are created on the same pc that the esxi was installed on, right? 4)when creating the OS for the instance I need to have it on a cd or just select that option from the hypervisor?
The ESXi is installed on the main SERVER. The one that must be on 24h/day. The vSphere should be installed on any computer you want to use for administration of the SERVER. For installing the OS you should have an .iso you must upload in the database of the SERVER.
enditend 2 1) Actually Vsphere is the entire suite including Vsphere Client, Vcenter, ESXi and other components. What he refers to is Vsphere client . And YES you install Vsphere Client on your computer or laptop 2) EXSi is the Hypervisor 1( bare metal) server, it is a physical server though not the desktop/laptop where Vsphere client is installed. 3) The two instances are created on/under the EXSi SERVER 4) it can be on a CD on the EXSi server itself or as an ISO on the Vsphere client or on SAN/NAS storage appliance. Depending which option you've chosen
Cool video! I'm still confused, so a type 1 hypervisor is just a smaller OS that runs a bunch of VMs? How is it any different then booting from a VM with a boot loader? Aside from being able to configure everything within the console.
Great video!!!...does esxi allow you to add PCI/PCI-e hardware...looking to deploy pbx server with digium PCI card and was wondering I can add specific hardware (PCI) to specific guests? Thanks again for the video!
I have a question related to the RAM allocation. In your earlier videos on "Introduction to Virtualization" you mentioned that the RAM allocation is dynamic in case of Type 1 Hypervisor and in this video you mentioned that the RAM allocation should be static else it might crash. Please clarify. Thank you.
I came across an error when I tried installing ESXI. Says I need a third party network drivers in order to proceed with the installation. I'm running Windows Server 2008 on a HP 8300 Elite PC. Do I have to re-compile the CD for this to work?
The introduction to ESXi was very good. If possible could you put links in it to the next video in the series? Having the video of you in the back ground of you in the same video was very distracting.
I have a question, on Server you want to install the hypervisor, do you need to have an OS already installed on it to run it? If so, what would be recommended to have on it and or is the hypervisor server itself an OS?
Hi Eli, I just installed this esxi 5.5 on HP DL380 G6. I'm using a custom iso esxi 5.5u1 for the server itself. Everything is work but now i am trying to activate the license. I already got the key but i could find the option the assign the key either direct on the host/ using vsphere client. on vsphere client home page, i only got inventory>inventory & administration>roles&system logs. i've other videos the home page it should have a license under administration section.
Eli, i dont know if you can answer a question of mine...i'll start to install esxi on my laptop with servers and in a future i'm expecting to buy another one, but i dont know if i can create a backup or even do something like a live migration in this picture, if it can be done, can you explan me???
Would it be possible to install macos on a laptop running ESXi with only an integrated intel gpu and get similar performance as when running vanilla hackintosh?
7:40 *You need a management computer somewhere else to connect to the hypervisor so you can manage it.* Is it possible to manage the server without an additional computer ???
Holy hell, dude, you are the answer to my prayers. Fantastic teaching style, plain talk. AWESOME. Thank you!

Eli you are fantastic...far better than any of my lecturers...
Most productive 30 mins I've had today! Gonna get that PowqerEdge 2950 rollin!
Thank you Eli! After a day on TH-cam, I finally found this video. Perfectly explained! VMware should hire you for their tutorials man...
Love this clip. Very nice & descriptive information. Just what I was looking for. Thanks heaps. Great Job.
It was a excellent teaching, comparision and examples are awasome .Now i got a basic concept of ESXi works. It is very very useful.
Best explanation on ESXi. Thank you for explaining.

Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing, very descriptive and useful.
Good video Eli, thanks. Good detail and very helpful. Looking forward to testing ESXi.
Great Job, easy to understand the concept of ESXi.
I can say one thing... easy like pie"... Thanks Eli
When you virtualize Desktops you create a VDI... Virtual Desktop Infrastructure... VDI's are built specifically to handle desktop virtualization.
Excellent for a type 1 hyper-visor test and learning environment. Thanks Eli.
Excellent. Well done. Being familiar with Type 2 Virtualization concepts this was perfect for me before plunging into Type 1 concepts. This will be a tremendous help to me to prepare for at the job VMWare initiatives. Thanks again.
You sir make this stuff much clearer...thanks and subbed!

Muhsina Gowth esc
muhsina , its about the Virtual machines . Instead of using physical servers , we can use this virtual machine to create multiple virtual instance which works like physical servers .
I would love to see additional videos on virtualization in a home lab environment starting with selecting hardware that does not break the bank!
Also dealing with hyper-v!

I just wanted to point out that when he refers to vSphere as the management software he is talking about vCenter Server. vSphere is the product suite, vCenter is what manages the ESX/ESXi hosts.
Russel Martin Actually he is referring to Vsphere CLIENT. Vsphere Center is usually installed on EXSi server not on a laptop or desktop
Superb - Thank you so much.

Great info thanks.
Eli, you rock !!!
It was so helpful, really Thanks a ton!!

Hello Eli, Can you please take a class on Desktop Virtualization using VMWare.
