Moving Up to Amateur Radio

- Another from my collection of vintage ham radio movies. this one aspires to convince CB'ers to move up to ham radio. Also if you've watch the other films, you can see how some clips are edited and inserted into various films! These all date from the early to mid 70's. I converted this old and somewhat damaged 16mm film to video tape many many years ago when the technology to do that was rather archaic. I have now converted those old video reels to digital movies. Not the best quality but still quite amusing. I have a few more to do. Up until a couple years ago I was still hauling my 16mm projector and films and screen to ham club meetings and showing these for the evenings entertainment!

You gotta love that old SSTV equipment and radioteletype terminal. Nowadays I can do the same thing with my laptop, a ham rig, and a small interface. If only back then they could see how easy it is these days.
I remember converting an old DNT CB radio to work on the 10fm band. that was my very first HF rig after passing the morse test back in 198. Thanks for sharing. 73's

Back in the 70's I used to teach classes for those wanting to get their novice ham license. I once caught Roy Neal (K6DUE) on the air and he was kind enough to do a voice promo for me to record and play in my class.

Don't lump us all together Zeke. I've been licensed for 35+ years and welcome new hams to the bands every chance I get.
@TheZeke1974 Odd comment, because I've never noticed the bands to be over run. Except on a contest weekend. All the ham magazines, all club meetings, are always focused on how we can get more to join our ranks to keep the hobby from dying out. Yet you think the bands should be quieter. FYI, I have some ARRL license manuals that go back over 40 years that were pretty much the same as a Gordon West book.
This brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for uploading! I realize some of those appearing in this film are SK, but most of the calls are no longer valid, either...

I was watching another film from the same time aimed at teens. It is interesting to see how operating practices have changed - BREAK isn;t used anymore except in traffic (messages) handling. Now, to jump into a QSO, we just give our call sign.

If your call is K6DUE, then why did you use someone Tom Gillette's call sign of W6HX? I mean I get that is his station, but he's not there.
Because when this was filmed in 1976, the FCC rules in force stated that any operator other than the licensee of that primary station has to use the call sign of said primary station, therefore, K6DUE as a guest op uses the station call of W6HX. This rule was abolished sometime in '77 or '78 if I remember right. I would imagine that W6HX was present but not visible in the film.

CBers are only allowed 4 Watts and Morse Code is no longer required on the test.
B-91-10 ham and cb is different
CB'rs are allowed to run 1000 watts too. You can watch them do it on youtube. FCC does not care.

Where I live CB is dead, too. I have a couple of old CB's but have no need to hook them up. I think cell phones have killed CB. Since everyone carries a cell phone where you can instantly reach anyone else, why would they bother with a 4 watt CB that only reaches a few miles and you have to use a big antenna? There are a few truckers who still use them around here but no hobbyists.
n2uhc still alive just like ham, none of it is dead. cells, internet can't make friends the same way and in no way can improve the interpersonal skills but I'm radio people improve on it. 73

So, Zeke, why is it that you want the Amateur Bands to be much quieter? As a hobbyist myself, I thought the whole point was to encourage more people to our hobby. And how is memorizing Morse considered "work?" Perhaps you're not aware of this, but the advent of computers has moved the burden of Morse Code translation from people to computers.
By the way, our very modern radios would be wiped out by the very same EMP that would take out our computers -minus he occasional 1950's boat anchor
Nice Drake watt meter but with hams radio you can't get down like you can on cb. They ain't got the fire in the wire pushin 5k.

W6HX hes was a 20 WPM Extra back when you had to KNOW things to become a ham and before study books and online practice testing. This guys was/is a REAL HAM!

Back in that timeframe one had to WORK to get his her ham ticket. None of this QRZ online tests, Gordon West books, no coders, ect ect.... I will bet if things where still like this ( 5, 13 and 20 WPM CW test no books or online tests) nowadays our ham bands would be MUCH quieter!!!!!
Its ok that hams arte trying to get new ops into the hobby but the older hams that have been around a long time tend to run them off in short order. Ive been a ham for a few years and they tried to run me off because i was a 5 WPM General but i stood up to them and held my ground and now they leave me alone.... I dont put up with thier BS.

I work CB radio from Great Britain and can chat to contacts all over the world without the snobbiness of ham radio.
I run for watts from the hill I live on and have no problems. Ok now go and comment on this hams cos I'm sick and tired of you being condescending towards CB radio users.
P.s we don't need repeaters either
+DrTarpon1974 I agree with you on that. I hate hearing bad language and bleed-over from over powered units pumping out a kilowatt on sideband.
It's a shame that when I listen to mid block on 11 meter all I hear is mid-European stations with huge roger beeps pushing mega power

Thins were better back then because the quality of hams that had to know what they were doing and they had to LEARN electronics to get their ham ticket. No books, no online tests, or other "give it to me now" stuff.. Unlike today where anyone and their son can become a ham simply by memorizing a few questions out of a book,... Shoot, some Extra class hams cant even solder a PL 259!!! I say bring back the code, ban the books and online tests. Make hams have to learn something!!!
Sad but in 2020 cb is dead except for a few truckers on 19. Ham is on its way out as well
Ham Radio is alive and well. New programs like POTA (parks on the air) and SOTA (summits on the air) has really been great attracting new folks to the hobby and even though Morse code is no longer a requirement the new hams interested in POTA and SOTA realize how effective Morse code is and there are backlogs of people signing up for online Morse code classes. Watch some TH-cam videos about parks on the air to understand what it’s all about.
