the piece of yarn at 0:07 is a side slip indicator. It's not for making sure you have adequate airflow, but a good physical indicator to know when you're strafing
0:07 HAHAHAHAA!!!! Amazing. I took flying lessons in a Piper Super Cub when I was 17. My instructor taped a piece of yarn to the windshield, too. This is so his students could be sure to keep good forward airflow over the aircraft. Not sure why a helicopter needs this, but it's funny to see it here.
@hillberg100 they were both compound helicopters, needing propulsion engines and wings to get to that speed and overcome blade tip stall. so neither counts. the X2 at least is still using its rotor for all lift requirments
It's funny that you mention this. A few months ago, I was talking to a fellow who's an mechanic for Ringshausen racing in Germany. He explained to me that European cars tend to be able to enter corners faster because they're better balanced. American cars tend to leave corners faster and accelerate faster because they have more horsepower and torque. So, in the end, they come out pretty even.
The X2 IS faster, but it's an experimental helicopter, and we DID shout about it. You must have missed those articles in Aviation Week, Defence Talk, Popular Science, Smithsonian Air and Space, etc.
That's a little out of date. It was true in the Sixties when Mustangs, Camaros, and Galaxies were winning the British Touring Cars Champoinship. I was Staff Writer on Pistonheads for a year (wrote under the moniker silversixx) and we measured the Corvette ZR1 as generating more lateral G than a GT3. The real irony being that the Porsche was quicker over a standing quarter! But, yes, your 'average' American car is pretty abject when it comes to getting a hustle on :)
@hillberg100 Yea, you are right Both are Faster But Bell are more faster than Lockheed. Now, there are lot project to be get helicopter goes faster, since the technology are improve and more modern design.
Sorry mate but the lynx is still the fastest, its easy to say this is faster or that is, prove it, the Lynx did and is still the fastest. Sikorsky also said there x-2 is faster, If the yanks built anything faster they would have shouted about it, but nothing.
The Boeing CH-47 is faster. I was stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, home of the 1-52d Aviation. I used to go on ride-alongs with them. Boeing has published a top speed of 196 mph, but it can actually fly faster. The top speed is classified because SOCOM uses the Chinook and they don't want the bad guys to use basic algebra to work out where our guys are going and when they'll get there. Trust me. The CH-47 is faster.
The rigid rotor head, the axe-heads on the rotor-tips, a sophisticated control system, and an ace test pilot.

Takes me back...Thanks for posting!

it says "lynx" about 10 times in the video and you still spelt it wrong.?
Correct. Ironically though, there a several American cars which lap road courses very impressively indeed.
i wonder if that blade shape would work on an r/c heli?

my government (dutch) just replaced the lynxes with NH-90s because they were deemed too old for rescue services. I don't see why?

Would love to see him hovering inverted :-)

Is this doable bc the blades are both horizontal and vertical?
Being picky maybe but how could you get the name wrong? The tail number is G-LYNX and it has Lynx written on the nose. :)
Wow.
LYNX!
Westland Lynx
an apache with that speed and manuverabilaty would be more devastating than a nuke bomb.

They can.LOL

Err...lots of other people use the Chinook. Including the UK....it's not faster than Lynx.
