I’ve noticed Dr. Ehrman has been doing a lot of these conversations with various youtubers and, while I’ve been loving them, the affiliate links included in all of them make me wonder how much control of the conversation he gets. I wish everyone was more upfront in terms of what business interests are at play here. I haven’t listened all the way to the end where maybe you discuss this more, but I comment now because this whole conversation will be somewhat colored by not knowing what kind of business relationship is happening. I totally understand that there will always be sponsorships related to content, and in fact I’m happy you’re getting them, but I feel that potential conflicts of interest in settings like these should always be established and explained upfront.

You know what I've found that is worse than someone who believes in a flying man in the sky? Atheists who are democrats who think government works. They have replaced one fairy tale with another. Careful following these people, while they rightfully point out there is no evidence for a deity, they make the mistake of believing in a new god: the god of the state - science. And, Science is great! But it doesn't have definitive answers - it has tentative answers that have probabilities of being more true or less true...which means that only FREEDOM can absolve the responsibility of a system that can't be 100% deciphered.

It is amazing how Genesis treats plants. Not only are they created before the sun, but they apparently suffer no effects of being submerged under miles of ocean for the better part of a year during Noah's flood. Indeed, the sign that the flood waters are receding is a living olive branch.

Man, Ehrman has really been on a really tenacious TH-cam blitz these days. I guess one reason why he's always been so popular is because he's good at self promotion (no judgement attached to that statement; he's my fave!), but I'm impressed by just how thorough he's been in reaching all of the "newer" millennial and Gen Z TH-camrs in the secular sphere. With all due respect to him as one of the foremost scholars in his field, he's also got such a "dad" vibe and it's endearing as all heck.

Dr. Ehrman seems to be so much more lively and engaged than I've seen them in a lot of other interviews. Way to bring out that enthusiasm with your enthusiasm, Erica.

Thank you. Dr. Bart was a big part of my deconversion. My Freshman year was in Theology. I switched to History and then the Law. During this time, much of my reading included his writings.
I'm sad to hear that because 21st Century science agrees with Genesis and the Bible. That means that 20th, 19th, 18th Century science disagreed with Genesis and the Bible.

The Bible says many times that God expanded the universe (spread out the heavens). This was not discovered until the 1930s, 1990s. The Bible says the universe is huge/enormous -- declares the GLORY of God. This was not discovered until the 1930s and 1940s. Before this the Milky Way was thought to be the entire universe. The Bible predicted the CMB. It says the heavens speak about the universe's creation and they speak day and night and there is nowhere where their voice is not heard. The CMB was not discovered until the 1960s. The Bible says the entire universe is experiencing entropy -- decay. Because He wills it so. When was the 2nd Law of thermodynamics discovered to apply the the entire universe?
I've read many of Dr. Ehrman's books and I bought his course after seeing this same discussion on another channel. The presentation is a work in progress, just raw video without the slides so far, but the subject matter is fascinating, and Bart's presentation style is engaging and very easy to follow. I'm only two lectures in, but I'll give it a qualified recommendation so far. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Around 8 minutes in, you and Dr. Ehrman get into the differing creation stories in Genesis. How do Jews treat the differing stories of creation in Genesis? I'm pretty sure that there are Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox Jews who insist that Genesis is literally true, but there is a LARGE segment of Jewry who are comfortable with the ambiguity. This is part of what keeps Judaism alive and able to adapt to changing futures. But another way to address this is Talmud -- or, rather, the Talmuds. There are two major, well known Talmuds: Babylonian and Jerusalem. I believe I've heard of at least one other, though I can't name it. Talmud is like an ancient blog, in which rabbis talk across the centuries to give us some different thoughts on how to understand what the Hebrew Bible is telling us. And two things that make Talmud interesting to me as a sociologist is that we get to see the social construction of Jewish traditions over time on the one hand, and a uniquely Jewish tradition of interpreting The Bible on the other. Christianity has never produced anything like Talmud, and, living in what I call an ethnically Christian society, I see the Christian efforts to come to one "correct" answer about what The Bible "means" as choking the life out of the religion.
Learning about history, theology and critical analysis of the origins of the bible is what freed my mind to escape YEC. I've been a fan of Ehrman for decades and love his down to earth style. Good for you getting this team up!

Fascinating that the compilers of Genesis judged women so insignificant they felt it unnecessary to explain how or with whom Cain & Abel spawned the second non-magically produced generation of humanity. Just assume it was unnamed sisters or, if not, we guys can live with the idea of some creatures roaming around the forest looking a bit like human women and they'll do the job.
Lovely how much respect people have. Genesis doesn't treat women as insignificant. In fact Eve being made out of Adam's side means they are equal. And only man and woman together are declared the image of God. It's pathetic how little people know about the Bible, evangelicals and atheists alike. And frankly - Genesis or the whole OT was never meant to be a science book. It's allegory and myth. But that doesn't mean it's worthless. BTW - please, nobody should try to learn interpretation of the Bible from an ex-evangelical turned anti-apologist like Ehrman. Better read a strictly literary interpretation like "God, a biography" by Jack Miles. You might be surprised.

Self promotion and advertising is not inherently bad, and in this case it is doing exactly what it should be. I am here because I am looking for information from a real scholar about biblical scripture, and now I know there are 33 books on thar subject by someone extremely qualified. Ehrman is qualified to discuss the OT as he’s both studied it as a secondary emphasis to his majors and has written several scholarly and mainstream books/essays on the topic. That said, Dr Ehrman is most famous for his work regarding the NT, and I agree that Pete Enns is a very capable OT specialist who I would welcome to see in a conversation with Erika. Of course I live in Chapel Hill, so it’s possible I’m biased! 😂

@@MetaphorUB my understanding is that BE is a scholar of NT textual criticism. Not that he’s not capable of having an informed discussion on Genesis, but it’s not exactly his wheelhouse.
This is a good point. Ehrman is a first-rate scholar of the NT and early Christianity, but looking to him for scholarship on Genesis is kind of like looking to a specialist on 19th-century American literature for commentary on Beowulf. Or kind of like taking a course on primatology from a herpetologist. @Metaphor Underdog’s comment about “secondary emphasis” is also sensible. The disciplines are contiguous and Ehrman undoubtedly had to take at least one Hebrew Bible/Old Testament course while earning his degrees, but he’s not an “insider” to scholarship on Genesis or really anything in the Hebrew Bible. I know he’s promoting his video lectures so he’s made himself available, but somebody like Digital Hammurabi would be a more reliable source. (Full disclosure: I’m a biblical scholar who focuses on Genesis.)

As a native Hebrew speaker who read the bible in Hebrew multiple times, I can say that reading the bible in English doesn't give you all the context you need, any translation needs to sacrifice some of the details and context in order to preserve another, and some of it is just not going to be translated because it just doesn't work the same in English. You can read the bible in English and learn a lot from it, but if you want to analyse the text your best shot is to understand the text in Hebrew, otherwise you just lose important details.

Growing up with a Catholic father and Evangelical mother, I distinctly remember my mother telling me the moment she was ok with us kids ignoring the priest during their homilies was after he said that Noah's ark wasn't literal. So yeah, this tracks.
I remember being admonished in catechism class when I brought up that question...Cain was banished but got married later?..who did he marry if there was only him and Adam and Eve in the world??...and the later on when older I asked the embarrassing one...how did the world become populated from just two people without there being a whole lot of incest going on.
Not said anything previously, but I like your content; it aligns with some of my own thoughts, but things I don't usually talk about openly. I interpret a lot of this stuff more as allegory and cultural history, and generally also feel the YECs and similar have "kinda got it wrong"; not really a fan either of overly literal interpretations, nor on all the overly elaborate theology built mostly on prooftexting and similar. Where exactly I would fall would be itself a subject of interpretation though (I tend to leave things fairly "open ended" here though, can't make a strong case for what may or may not exist without a whole lot evidence and nor any real ability to test whether or not they exist).

Okay I'm only like 8 minutes in but growing up, I learned that Genesis 2 was just a continuation of Genesis 1. I had never even heard that it could be possible otherwise. And I had to go back now and read it and yeah it says that there was no shrubs or anything in chapter 2 despite them being made in chapter 1.

Professor Gary Rendsburg at Rutgers University produced an awesome multimedia course on Genesis that got published by Great Courses. Professor Ehrman knows the topic, too. But Rendsburg made Genesis his life's work.
I've for a long time considered the pentateuch to be the origins myth of the tribes of Israel, not the whole of humanity. Nothing wrong with that, most civilisations have their origins myths, Rome with Romulus and Remus being an obvious example.
I really enjoy listening to Bart Ehrlich talk about the Bible and history and pretty much anything he's very knowledgeable about everything that he talks about he is definitely an expert. The interesting distinction that was made early on in this video between the New testament and the Old testament was the amount of time that it took to compile or write these things down between the Gospels and the Torah. The thing is that I find interesting that you're talking about later on at about minutes 14:55, is that you have several stories written differently you know the creation story between the creation of the earth and what came first and then the difference between that and the Adam and Eve story what came first and next but what is interesting I think between the two is that one took thousands of years to write down on paper and compile or parchment and the other one took about 40 years to write down and then it took about 400 years to compile the thing about it that's very interesting is that in both of these scenarios the Torah and the gospel especially within Genesis you have these alternate sources and they're all included and kind of melded together sometimes in separate chapters with the different versions and sometimes within the same chapter kind of blended together and my fascination with this is that the gospels does that too cuz you know you're talking about one thing which is Jesus and in each gospel you have a different account and that I think is really interesting that that kind of aspect of storytelling that gets put into a book of religious consequence like either the Gospels or the Torah happens that just happens and people have different versions of events as time goes on and then they those different versions of events get put in and canonized. I think that you know these discrepancies explain probably political alliances and compromises. This process probably does have a name and I'll wait and watch the rest of this video to see if this process that we're really talking about has a name because it can't be the only two instances of this happening in ancient texts or even more modern text. You guys talk about linguistic shifting through time but you haven't talked about how giving more time the composition of groups changes and you have splits in groups and then you have inclusions in groups from other people and therefore the influences and the stresses political stresses and social stresses change. I think that that explains kind of the necessity for different versions to be included in a shared book or an account of a shared history.
There are many of them, and Bart references them all the time. Bart has just broken through into popular culture because his style is usually a lot more accessible.
Ehrman is great until you listen to Richard Carrier's peer-reviewed rebuttals of his latest work. But they'd both agree Genesis is cobbled together fairy tales.
I’ve seen Dr Ehrman interviewed with that same background by numerous different TH-cam channels and each one has asked him different open ended questions, which leads to many different answers and I’m so thankful for that.
Different ancient peoples interpreted things differently. That's why there are so many stories that symbolize creation of things and ideas and who or what could have been in control.
I don't understand that an academic can argue that Gen 1 and 2 are at odds with each other. Gen 1 has the main story, but Gen 2 contains the details of what in Gen 1. An analogy would be that Gen 1 is like a computer program but Gen 2 would be subroutines. Gen 2 would not be read as a sequence but be a list of details. In Gen 1 the earth was not created before the sun because all the celestial bodies were created in the beginning, before the first day. It was misunderstood that the "darkness on the face of the deep" meant that the darkness was on the ocean surface, therefore making the sun not present until the fourth day. Since the "deep" and "waters" are different then the deep would be the sea floor which would be dark. The first day was when the water which covered the entire earth became shallow enough over the continental surfaces as the water drained into the rapidly opening basins.
Understanding the role of myth is necessary for understanding the first 12 chapters of Genesis. Understanding legends related to history is necessary for understanding chapters 13-50.
Bart Ehrman has been one of it heroes for 2 decades now… one if not the best, non-biased (the best a human can be) scholars of Early Christianity and the life of Jesus.
If you have time, THE ALPHABET THAT CHANGED THE WORLD by Stan Tenen might interest you. He was a non-religious Jewish mathematician who found elegant patterns and symmetries in the sequence of Hebrew letters in B'reshit (Genesis), particularly the first verse. That's the best synopsis I can give because I would need to revisit the text to go into further detail. The original text, for me, suggests that the "creation" of Elohim in Genesis 1 is hapening here and now. We human beings have the resposibilty to care for all those aspects of this beautiful "creation" of Elohim in Genesis 1. Yes, the true meaning gets lost in translation. Also, after all my independent research, I reached the conclusion that, politics aside, what we know of the beliefs of the Sadducees ('tzadoqim') is closer to the true Hebraic worldview of the ancient Israelites.

It is amazing how Genesis treats plants. Not only are they created before the sun, but they apparently suffer no effects of being submerged under miles of ocean for the better part of a year during Noah's flood. Indeed, the sign that the flood waters are receding is a living olive branch.

Man, Ehrman has really been on a really tenacious TH-cam blitz these days. I guess one reason why he's always been so popular is because he's good at self promotion (no judgement attached to that statement; he's my fave!), but I'm impressed by just how thorough he's been in reaching all of the "newer" millennial and Gen Z TH-camrs in the secular sphere.
With all due respect to him as one of the foremost scholars in his field, he's also got such a "dad" vibe and it's endearing as all heck.

During this time, much of my reading included his writings.
I'm sad to hear that because 21st Century science agrees with Genesis and the Bible. That means that 20th, 19th, 18th Century science disagreed with Genesis and the Bible.

Genesis says the Earth was created as a water filled world. Until about 3 years ago, the Earth was believed be be created as a rocky planet and water came to Earth by comets/asteroids.
Genesis says the first life had photosynthesis (Bible calls it vegetation). The fossil record shows that photosynthesis existed 3.7 billion years ago (cyanobacteria) and evidence implies that photosynthesis was on Earth 4.2 billion years ago (oldest rocks on Earth contain hematite - iron rust in water and OXYGEN).
The Bible says many times that God expanded the universe (spread out the heavens). This was not discovered until the 1930s, 1990s.
The Bible says the universe is huge/enormous -- declares the GLORY of God. This was not discovered until the 1930s and 1940s. Before this the Milky Way was thought to be the entire universe.
The Bible predicted the CMB. It says the heavens speak about the universe's creation and they speak day and night and there is nowhere where their voice is not heard. The CMB was not discovered until the 1960s.
The Bible says the entire universe is experiencing entropy -- decay. Because He wills it so. When was the 2nd Law of thermodynamics discovered to apply the the entire universe?

I've read many of Dr. Ehrman's books and I bought his course after seeing this same discussion on another channel. The presentation is a work in progress, just raw video without the slides so far, but the subject matter is fascinating, and Bart's presentation style is engaging and very easy to follow.
I'm only two lectures in, but I'll give it a qualified recommendation so far. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Around 8 minutes in, you and Dr. Ehrman get into the differing creation stories in Genesis. How do Jews treat the differing stories of creation in Genesis? I'm pretty sure that there are Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox Jews who insist that Genesis is literally true, but there is a LARGE segment of Jewry who are comfortable with the ambiguity. This is part of what keeps Judaism alive and able to adapt to changing futures.
But another way to address this is Talmud -- or, rather, the Talmuds. There are two major, well known Talmuds: Babylonian and Jerusalem. I believe I've heard of at least one other, though I can't name it. Talmud is like an ancient blog, in which rabbis talk across the centuries to give us some different thoughts on how to understand what the Hebrew Bible is telling us. And two things that make Talmud interesting to me as a sociologist is that we get to see the social construction of Jewish traditions over time on the one hand, and a uniquely Jewish tradition of interpreting The Bible on the other. Christianity has never produced anything like Talmud, and, living in what I call an ethnically Christian society, I see the Christian efforts to come to one "correct" answer about what The Bible "means" as choking the life out of the religion.
Orthodox Jews have always viewed the ancient texts as literal, figurative, and allegorical. Genesis is primarily interpreted as allegorical.
It is incredible that normal people are able to talk to the great Bart Ehrman. He is my hero.
Learning about history, theology and critical analysis of the origins of the bible is what freed my mind to escape YEC. I've been a fan of Ehrman for decades and love his down to earth style. Good for you getting this team up!

Fascinating that the compilers of Genesis judged women so insignificant they felt it unnecessary to explain how or with whom Cain & Abel spawned the second non-magically produced generation of humanity. Just assume it was unnamed sisters or, if not, we guys can live with the idea of some creatures roaming around the forest looking a bit like human women and they'll do the job.
I mean, we do know of exactly one woman they could've mated with. As I understand it, Eve was still alive and fertile...

Self promotion and advertising is not inherently bad, and in this case it is doing exactly what it should be. I am here because I am looking for information from a real scholar about biblical scripture, and now I know there are 33 books on thar subject by someone extremely qualified. I get the information I need, he gets to sell his books and Erika gets to reach more people for views. Everyone wins, and no one is being taken advantage of. I fail to see the problem. 🤷♀️

You should talk to Pete Enns. He’s an actual OT scholar who has written extensively on Genesis.
Ehrman is qualified to discuss the OT as he’s both studied it as a secondary emphasis to his majors and has written several scholarly and mainstream books/essays on the topic. That said, Dr Ehrman is most famous for his work regarding the NT, and I agree that Pete Enns is a very capable OT specialist who I would welcome to see in a conversation with Erika. Of course I live in Chapel Hill, so it’s possible I’m biased! 😂

@@MetaphorUB my understanding is that BE is a scholar of NT textual criticism. Not that he’s not capable of having an informed discussion on Genesis, but it’s not exactly his wheelhouse.
This is a good point. Ehrman is a first-rate scholar of the NT and early Christianity, but looking to him for scholarship on Genesis is kind of like looking to a specialist on 19th-century American literature for commentary on Beowulf. Or kind of like taking a course on primatology from a herpetologist. @Metaphor Underdog’s comment about “secondary emphasis” is also sensible. The disciplines are contiguous and Ehrman undoubtedly had to take at least one Hebrew Bible/Old Testament course while earning his degrees, but he’s not an “insider” to scholarship on Genesis or really anything in the Hebrew Bible. I know he’s promoting his video lectures so he’s made himself available, but somebody like Digital Hammurabi would be a more reliable source. (Full disclosure: I’m a biblical scholar who focuses on Genesis.)

As a native Hebrew speaker who read the bible in Hebrew multiple times, I can say that reading the bible in English doesn't give you all the context you need, any translation needs to sacrifice some of the details and context in order to preserve another, and some of it is just not going to be translated because it just doesn't work the same in English.
You can read the bible in English and learn a lot from it, but if you want to analyse the text your best shot is to understand the text in Hebrew, otherwise you just lose important details.
Dr Bart explains it very similarly to how I learnt at Catholic school 50 years ago.
That is interesting, Dr. Ehrman grew up evangelicalism then went to a Presbyterian seminary.

Growing up with a Catholic father and Evangelical mother, I distinctly remember my mother telling me the moment she was ok with us kids ignoring the priest during their homilies was after he said that Noah's ark wasn't literal. So yeah, this tracks.

I remember being admonished in catechism class when I brought up that question...Cain was banished but got married later?..who did he marry if there was only him and Adam and Eve in the world??...and the later on when older I asked the embarrassing one...how did the world become populated from just two people without there being a whole lot of incest going on.

I interpret a lot of this stuff more as allegory and cultural history, and generally also feel the YECs and similar have "kinda got it wrong"; not really a fan either of overly literal interpretations, nor on all the overly elaborate theology built mostly on prooftexting and similar. Where exactly I would fall would be itself a subject of interpretation though (I tend to leave things fairly "open ended" here though, can't make a strong case for what may or may not exist without a whole lot evidence and nor any real ability to test whether or not they exist).

can insist on a literal interpretation of a translation. Anybody who speaks more than one language knows it doesn't make any sense.

If the claim that "The Bible", as if there were only one, is the "word of God" why do apologists feel the need to interpret it. "The word of God" should surely need no interpretation.

Okay I'm only like 8 minutes in but growing up, I learned that Genesis 2 was just a continuation of Genesis 1. I had never even heard that it could be possible otherwise. And I had to go back now and read it and yeah it says that there was no shrubs or anything in chapter 2 despite them being made in chapter 1.

Professor Gary Rendsburg at Rutgers University produced an awesome multimedia course on Genesis that got published by Great Courses. Professor Ehrman knows the topic, too. But Rendsburg made Genesis his life's work.
I've for a long time considered the pentateuch to be the origins myth of the tribes of Israel, not the whole of humanity. Nothing wrong with that, most civilisations have their origins myths, Rome with Romulus and Remus being an obvious example.

I really enjoy listening to Bart Ehrlich talk about the Bible and history and pretty much anything he's very knowledgeable about everything that he talks about he is definitely an expert. The interesting distinction that was made early on in this video between the New testament and the Old testament was the amount of time that it took to compile or write these things down between the Gospels and the Torah. The thing is that I find interesting that you're talking about later on at about minutes 14:55, is that you have several stories written differently you know the creation story between the creation of the earth and what came first and then the difference between that and the Adam and Eve story what came first and next but what is interesting I think between the two is that one took thousands of years to write down on paper and compile or parchment and the other one took about 40 years to write down and then it took about 400 years to compile the thing about it that's very interesting is that in both of these scenarios the Torah and the gospel especially within Genesis you have these alternate sources and they're all included and kind of melded together sometimes in separate chapters with the different versions and sometimes within the same chapter kind of blended together and my fascination with this is that the gospels does that too cuz you know you're talking about one thing which is Jesus and in each gospel you have a different account and that I think is really interesting that that kind of aspect of storytelling that gets put into a book of religious consequence like either the Gospels or the Torah happens that just happens and people have different versions of events as time goes on and then they those different versions of events get put in and canonized. I think that you know these discrepancies explain probably political alliances and compromises. This process probably does have a name and I'll wait and watch the rest of this video to see if this process that we're really talking about has a name because it can't be the only two instances of this happening in ancient texts or even more modern text. You guys talk about linguistic shifting through time but you haven't talked about how giving more time the composition of groups changes and you have splits in groups and then you have inclusions in groups from other people and therefore the influences and the stresses political stresses and social stresses change. I think that that explains kind of the necessity for different versions to be included in a shared book or an account of a shared history.
Dr Ehrman is probably the ONLY biblical scholar that has any rationality at all.

Different ancient peoples interpreted things differently. That's why there are so many stories that symbolize creation of things and ideas and who or what could have been in control.
I don't understand that an academic can argue that Gen 1 and 2 are at odds with each other. Gen 1 has the main story, but Gen 2 contains the details of what in Gen 1. An analogy would be that Gen 1 is like a computer program but Gen 2 would be subroutines.
Gen 2 would not be read as a sequence but be a list of details. In Gen 1 the earth was not created before the sun because all the celestial bodies were created in the beginning, before the first day.
It was misunderstood that the "darkness on the face of the deep" meant that the darkness was on the ocean surface, therefore making the sun not present until the fourth day.
Since the "deep" and "waters" are different then the deep would be the sea floor which would be dark.
The first day was when the water which covered the entire earth became shallow enough over the continental surfaces as the water drained into the rapidly opening basins.
Understanding the role of myth is necessary for understanding the first 12 chapters of Genesis. Understanding legends related to history is necessary for understanding chapters 13-50.

Bart Ehrman has been one of it heroes for 2 decades now… one if not the best, non-biased (the best a human can be) scholars of Early Christianity and the life of Jesus.
Dr. Bart Ehrman is a great writer. Jesus interrupted is a fantastic read.
If you have time, THE ALPHABET THAT CHANGED THE WORLD by Stan Tenen might interest you. He was a non-religious Jewish mathematician who found elegant patterns and symmetries in the sequence of Hebrew letters in B'reshit (Genesis), particularly the first verse. That's the best synopsis I can give because I would need to revisit the text to go into further detail. The original text, for me, suggests that the "creation" of Elohim in Genesis 1 is hapening here and now. We human beings have the resposibilty to care for all those aspects of this beautiful "creation" of Elohim in Genesis 1. Yes, the true meaning gets lost in translation. Also, after all my independent research, I reached the conclusion that, politics aside, what we know of the beliefs of the Sadducees ('tzadoqim') is closer to the true Hebraic worldview of the ancient Israelites.
