    You know what I cant understand is how Michael Clarke Duncan didn't get an Oscar for this role. He was amazing and made the movie. One of the best performances I've ever seen. Amazing performance.

      @thedrdroppedme ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Have to agree. He was nominated that year, but lost to Michael Caine for The Cider House Rules. Both incredible performances, but only one of those films stood the test of time. Ducan's performance was extraordinary. The world lost him too soon.

    • @Justin.Franks
      @Justin.Franks ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It's pretty obvious why. Only three black men had won an Oscar for best supporting actor before The Green Mile, and he was only the 10th black actor even nominated for that award. And Cuba Gooding Jr. got one just three years earlier, so it was "too soon" for another. It wouldn't be until 2004 when another black actor won that award (Morgan Freeman in Million Dollar Baby).

      @@Justin.Franks Please don’t pull the race card. Did Duncan give a Oscar worth performance…..yes, in this case so did Mr. Caine. So I am pretty sure it came down to the advertising and the campaign for said Oscar.
      I can’t say Mr. Duncan Got screwed over as badly as when Mickey Rourke lost to Sean Penn. That was a political decision pure and simple. And yes studios Mount campaigns for Oscars

    You guys are really amazing. Love your reactions especially to this one. Your emotions and reactions are so raw. I really loved the look on your faces at those pivotal parts and your sense of humor at those pivotal parts. You left in all the best scenes that many reactors cut out. That makes me so happy that you did because those are the parts we want to see reactions to. And may I say, I really am touched at the way you guys look at each other when certain things occurred. You can see in those looks how close you two are and that is such a great thing.
    Remember John Coffy's lawyer said that he didn't seem to exist before the girls died? That he "just fell out of the sky"? Take his initials.... who else do you know with the initials J.C.? I've heard of an interview with Stephen King. He didn't come right out and say that's who John actually was. But he did go out of his way to point out John's initials.
    Also, the attorney who prosecuted Andy in Shawshank is one of the guards in this movie. You'll also find that Dean in this is Jackson the sniper from Saving Private Ryan which Hanks also stared in.
    Anyway, thank you for your channel.

    "Sometimes, the Green Mile seems so long." John Coffey was not a sorcerer, he was an angel of God . The first man we saw who died in the electric chair was the actor Graham Greene, the man who played Kicking Bird, the medicine man in Dances with Wolves. Nowadays, the Green Mile is called Death Row. Tom Hanks movies are always so good; he is such a talented and versatile actor. The actor who played John Coffey, Michael Clarke Duncan, died at the age of 54 in 2012. RIP Mr. Duncan. x

Mostly, I'm tired of people being ugly to each other. I'm tired of all the pain I feel and hear in the world every day. There's too much of it - it's like pieces of glass in my head, all the time. In the Book... John's execution is tough to get through. Not just the execution itself, but on the way to the execution chamber, all of the guards were having emotional breakdowns and John basically had to escort them. He was the only one calm during the whole thing. The death of Paul's wife is tough too

    Awesome reaction. My top 5 favorite movies.

  • @VexVaudlain
    @VexVaudlain ปีที่แล้ว

    Most of the guards' tears during the execution was very real. In fact, the actor who plays the guard, Dean, was practically sobbing as they filmed it.
    Here's an interesting fact about the age element. An average house mouse lives about 2 years. Mr. Jingles died at 64 (it says in the book). That's 32 times the lifespan of a normal mouse. In 1930s USA, the average lifespan of a man was 63.5 years. By that math, Paul Edgecombe (Tom's character) could possibly live for over 2,000 years. That's one hell of an accidental curse.
    Here's some additional disturbing info - almost no one else had a peaceful death. A lot of the people who could have stopped the execution, or delayed it, did die soon after it. The warden (whose wife John healed) died 9 years later of a stroke. His wife died of a heart attack a year later. Dean (the younger guard who doesn't sneak John out with the others) is killed by a prisoner 4 months after the execution. The sheriff, who was a massive racist in the book and that arrested John, died of a heart attack shortly after the execution while having relations with an underage African American girl. Even the little girls' parents didn't get off unscathed. The mom died of a heart attack and the dad died barely a month after the execution of a stroke.
    Brutus, the tall guard, lived into his fifties and died 25 years after the execution of a heart attack. Percy died 33 years later in a mental hospital (I think his initial punishment may have been considered "enough"). Harry, the last of the guards, lived for another 50 years before dying of cancer.

    John Coffey = JC = Jesus Christ. In a story written by Stephen King, that is no coincidence. Coffey could resurrect the dead and cure the ill. A halo appears around his head while he watches the movie with the song lyrics "I'm in Heaven". An ancient legend tells the story of what happened to the Roman soldier who stabbed Jesus with the spear. He was cursed with immortality. Once again, JC dies for someone else's sins.
    You missed another Shawshank alumni. The older guard who Wild Bill pees on was the prosecutor who sent Andy Dufresne to prison at the start of Shawshank. The other young guard played the American sniper in Saving Pvt Ryan.

    This is the saddest movie I've ever seen. Makes me cry every time, even if I'm watching a reaction and not the whole thing. The reason is simple: there's no greater tragedy than a good person being dealt an unfair hand in life, and Michael Clarke Duncan gives this character such a big heart (surely in the top 3 more wholesome character to most people) that anything south of happiness is an unfair hand. So you spend most of the movie with an increasing saddness as you learn how much the balance between what he deserves and what he's getting keep getting more uneven. Then, suddenly, you learn this is what he wants, and there's two seconds of relief, until he explains why, and you realise this poor man's been tortured by his empathy throughout his whole life and his life has been a literal hell. And now you're crying both because of his death and because of his life.
    R.I.P Michael, you too have brought life into this world but taken away far too soon.

    So just for reference, Stephen King has said in interviews that the character of John Coffey is a cinematic representation of the story of Jesus Christ. A young to middle aged castaway, initials of JC, burdened to pay for the sins of others, with nothing but pure love in their heart. And actually Del and Wild Bill play a very significant role in this representation. Del’s name was Edward Delacroix. Delacroix meaning “of the cross”. Del played the role of the thief on the cross that was asking for repentance and was sincerely sorry for what he had done. Wild Bill was thief that mocked Jesus and suffered a horrible death. The storytelling in this movie is immaculate. King was in his bag writing this story. And every cast member played the story so good. People literally HATE Percy. Doug Hutchinson did an incredible job playing Percy.

    I've been watching movies since the '50s and the call back to "Cheek To Cheek" combined with the "please don't put me in the dark" and the old Jingles reveal add up to the most devastating film ending I've ever experienced.

    38:30- That's always the hardest part of the movie for me. Man, as a christian, I'd be afraid for my soul too. I got to face The Father one day and I'd have to answer for sending Coffy to death row. Like, what could I say as my defense?

    If a prisoner is not executed the way the court ordered then I believe it is considered murder. Pretty sure Percy could be charged with murder. For both Dell and Bill.

    I always think of Doc Roe's grandmother from band of brothers when I see John Coffey if you remember he mentions in the fox hole that she was a Trateur or a healer from Louisiana 😁

    I don't know how many times I've seen The Green Mile back in 1999 when it first came out. It doesn't not fail in bringing tears to my eyes. It's a very powerful movie and the entire cast was stellar especially Michael Clarke Duncan. Thanks for this movie reaction viewing. You two are awesome. Take care.

      @@Hal2718 - He goes on to spell it as "K.... O..." though, so either he can't actually spell like he said/thought or his initials are "K.C." and not "J.C.". Or am I completely misremembering him spelling out the first two letters of his name in the jail cell? Admittedly I've only re-watched it through reaction videos and I think only one reactor included that part of the scene, so I might not remember it right.

    Frank Darabont is one of the best screenwriters and adapters of novels. Obviously the Stephen king story is incredible, but the entire production of this movie is amazing.
    The soundtrack is perfect also.

    I love it when her husband laughs. It is the funniest thing ever because usually what he's laughing at really IS funny, and when he laughs it just makes me laugh harder. When they reacted to Fury, and the dude that was giving the new kid a hard time, he was cracking up, and I just busted out laughing.
