Did The Victorians Have These Problems? - Episode 27, Day 45 - London to Hereford

  • It's Tuesday 20th June, and on another hot day in England, we catch up on the Bicester VIllage branch, and then get the one-a-day "Finstock Flyer", take a walk through the countryside to get to Combe station, and then head west to Great Malvern and Hereford, except that things once again did not run smoothly ...
Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: itunes.apple.com/gb/album/all... (other stores are available....)
Geoff and Vicki are visiting ALL 2,563 national railway stations in Britain - view the progress map and loads more information about the project on the website at: allthestations.co.uk/
ROUTE: London Paddington - Hayes & Harlington - Oxford - Bicester Village - Oxford - (Combe) - Worcester Shrub Hill - Worcester Foregate Street - Malvern Link - Hereford
NOTE: We are using standard class All Line Rover tickets for our journey, but GWR kindly upgraded us to first class for this train -
    thank you!

That's Worcester's one-way system for you. The coach could not continue westerly down Lowesmoor as that route is restricted so had to turn south, at Aldi, towards St. Martins Gate, passing Asda, before reaching the City Walls Road and turning north again. Given the state of the city's traffic it is often quicker to walk, especially in 'rush hour'. The route does not pass the Cathedral.

  • @mrquordlepleen
    @mrquordlepleen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

I found your videos by chance and I'm hooked. They're brilliant, beautifully presented by you both and wonderfully produced.
I'm originally from Sussex and moved over to Ireland in 2008. Now, possibly 'too much information' here but I watch these regularly, on a Tablet, whilst soaking in a late night bath in County Tipperary: bliss!
As a kid growing up in Hastings - 60's and 70's - I would often go down to St.Leonards Warrior Square station just to 'be' there and enjoy the feel of the railway. It's hard to put into words - my wife is very understanding - but you'll know what I mean of course. Used to wait for the unique Thumper diesel multiple units to enter the tunnels, one at each end of the platform. Specific narrow stock for the narrow tunnels; that's another story.
The rail network is small here and mostly single track. However, there's still a real branch line way of thinking. Our local trip from Birdhill to Limerick for example. Two trains a day and if you're running a little late you can often ring Birdhill, speak to the Station Master come Ticket Collector come Signalman, and he'll (theres just him) hold the train for you as long as it's just a few minutes.
A bit different to my old commute of Horsham to Gatwick :-)
Love these videos, love your Underground ones too.
    Thanks for making them!
    Now, where's my plastic duck?

I came back back home to Belgium from Chester via this windy route, via Hereford, Great Malvern, Worcester and Birmingham Moor Street to London Marylebone. There are some great sights to see. Didn't make it to the city centre in Hereford, unfortunately, but I did in Worcester. Great Britain is littered with historic cities...

Hi Geoff and Vicky, really enjoying your trip so far! All of my friends find it weird that I am fascinated by trains but have told them to enjoy your series and see the glory of rail transport in the UK! Although I live in St Albans now (of which we have had too much coverage haha), I am looking forward for you to pass through Nailsea & Backwell my real local station. I'll also add that you should give the Weston Super Mare branch line a real bit of coverage! Nothing like being on an HST on single track passing through Weston Milton, a station from my experience is barely used. Good luck! Mike

RE: "Bicester Village Station" well as far as a few of us locals are concerned it's still called Bicester Town Station as it was for so many years. Bicester is not a village but a Town ! Yes you are right - it's all car park for the shopping centre. We do in fact have a real high street called Sheep Street with shops where you can buy things for a pound.

Rail Travel in Worcester is always hell, they've got perpetual signal problems at Forgate, and there's something wrong with those points at Shrub Hill. And of course London Midlands is pretty naff, never enough coaches, especially on the peak time trains from Hereford to New Street, where there usually a good 100 college students from Hereford Sixth Form who have to sit on the floor.

Eeeugh the plague of problems at Worcester in 2017, I was commuting to Birmingham then and there was literally not a day when there was no delay, short form or cancellation, the bad days of London Midland.
At Shrub Hill the signal gantry at the Birmingham end is magnificent and dates back to Victorian times.
Great Malvern station is glorious and has a secret exit.
Hereford again is a magnificent station, the second built in the City and has a little used Platform 4. Also if you stayed at the Travelodge, then that was then site of the other Hereford station.

Brilliant videos. But what happened to Kingham Station? I was happily watching the trip on the Cotswold line, you got to Shipton under Wychwood then you were at Worcester and I was left disappointed! Particularly like Kingham as I was born there, it was once an important railway junction with lines to Cheltenham and Banbury plus I used to travel on the line to work each day back in the 1960's.
Please keep up the excellent videos, you two should have your own TV programme. :)

I still find it a bit weird boarding at train on the new Chiltern platforms at Oxford in what used to be the place where I parked my car.

It's funny in france we have a similar thing like the Bicester Village thing, they call it Vallée Village, its full of luxe brands and such, they have a shuttle that goes from the Champs Elysée to that village, which is close to Disneyland. You can get to it by the RER A at the Val D'Europe station (Which is a big mall)

5:39. I was in Great Malvern Station. That's where they shot scenes from Survivors 1975-77 BBC series.

only time I've ever been to Hereford is when I passed thru recently on a rail replacement bus so I was too annoyed to look at its beauty
