    ** Specifications **
    Overall length: 85 cm / 33.5 in
    Blade length: 70 cm / 27.5 in
    Blade width: 3.7 cm / 1.45 in
    Blade thickness: 6.5 mm / 0.25 in, tapering down to 2.5 mm / 0.1 in
    Point of balance: 7.5 cm / 3 in
    Weight: 1.54 kg / 3.4 lbs
    Material: Unknown high carbon steel
    Construction: Full-tang, peened
    ** Pros / Cons **
    + Intricate guard, good overall aesthetics
    + Well made and comfortable handle
    + Massive, durable blade
    - Loosely fitted guard, already comes with wooden shims
    - Heavy for the size (not necessarily wrong for a dussack)
    - Rough finish for the price
    - Unsuitable for cutting unless you spend a lot of time re-profiling the edge
    ** Verdict **
    Although I overall like this type of saber I'm not sure I can recommend it for $610 USD. The hilt comes loose quickly with use, the edge geometry is not good for cutting, and it doesn't seem safe for partner practice either, let alone high intensity full-contact sparring.
    If the finish was a little better it would be a great collector's sword, particularly considering the shortage of Sinclair sabers / dussacks / tessacks on the reproduction market.

    This is probably the type of videos that I am most appreciative of from your channel. You bring up points (like shims in the grip straight out of the box) that are extremely important to know. Furthermore, in the case of certain companies' customer service reputation, this may be the best tool to drive them to change those issues. Cheers

    The "Tessak" was quite common as a militia weapon in Norway during the late 16th and early 17th century, being purchased by the Crown and sold to farmers as their mandatory sidearm and quite alot of them are still in existance, see more here (in english): norskevaapen.no/?p=1776

    • @Tkoutlosh
      @Tkoutlosh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For 610USD you can get way better completely handforged reproduction from Czech Republic... probably even cheaper than this...

    • @Schmunzel57

      Better finish on such a complex hilt would cost much more.
      That is super cheap so there is no room for a better surface.
      That is only possible with wages under the minimum or better slaves and children.
      I guess you are spoilt by cheap thinks from India and China.
      They can produce much cheaper by paying 1-10$ per day for labour.
      This is from Italy.

    AT the time, it was also probably refered to as "cutlass" or "coutelas", and maybe even "machete". Cause this kind of saber, taken on board of the early ships going to the Americas, was used on the ground as a general purpose tool especially for clearing brush and processing game (hunting was a good efficient way of restocking meat, so much that it actually became a job: buccaneer). Little by little, these sabers got simplified for this land use as a tool, especially the hilt. But they retained the fullers of their faraway ancestors, even to this day. So using it harshly is really not out of scope for these sabers, just like it isn't abuse to chop with a briquet. It's just not very efficient because it's not optimized for the job, but as it is, it seems it was a good enough compromise to be both a tool and a weapon, and not have to carry an extra tool.

    • @dickersnoodle1025
      @dickersnoodle1025 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      at the time it probably would have just been referred to by the user as "sword" (or like you said machete) cause most sword terms we use now were not a thing when the swords were prominently used

    @skallagrim in skyrim there is a sheild called spell breaker. I was wondering if you could make a video on the practically on it. What makes this shield different is the tortoise shell shape is reversed the top of the shell is faced towards its weilder making a C shape towards the ennemy.

    I don't know if this is correct but i've read somewhere that Dussack is originaly a Czech weapon as the ones you showed in video (Tesák meaning fang) and that it was adopted mainly as a practice weapon by Germans. As i said this might be just a coincidence but still thought like sharing it.

    Spring steel: if it was an alloy, I suspect they'd mention it, so I'd assume a carbon steel, probably a 10xx steel in the realm of .70-.90 C. As for the thumb ring, it seems like they went with a one-size-fits-all, meaning it's just so huge that literally anyone could fit their thumb into it, but of course that means that 99% of people find it simply way too large.

    As for the square pommel:
    On Roland Warzecha's TH-cam channel, he's shown an original circa 1600 dussack with a similar (though not quite as chunky) pommel, but, of course, it has an older, more simplistic guard on it. Also note how much higher the original's thumb ring is.

    Can someone say if it is true
    A skilled longbow man could release between 10 - 12 arrows per minute - but required considerable training. The Longbow was a powerful wooden bow, that had a strong tension, was drawn by hand and usually 6-7 feet long. The weapon was particularly effective against opponents wearing plate armor and this type of Medieval archer could pierce the armor of a knight at ranges of more than 250 yards.

    I think that i would actually prefer a more tip-heavy sword if i had to use it just for cutting. I don't practice HEMA nor do i seek such adventures but if a camping spot needed bush clearing, then i would likely use such (tip-heavy) sword. Looks nice but the most use i'd see in it otherwise would be as a wall decoration.

    6:25 Skall, I beg to differ but some sabers actually have thumb rings placed below the cross-guard. Like the Polish hussar sabers. Maybe you should show this saber to Richard and ask him what he thinks about it. It could be that the thumb ring is actually placed correctly.

      Yeah, you just have to find them. Cold Steel has a good line of left handed swords, and some sabres like the P1796, Austrian M1861, and other D/P/B/Stirrup hilts are all able to be used with the left or right hands.

    Dussack vs rapier, which one do you prefer as a self defense weapons?

      Both of those would effectively amount to bringing a knife to a gunfight...

      I've read about a funny incident:
      After a Society event in New York City, a lady who uses the name "Sir Trude Lacklandia" was walking home late at night and assaulted by several muggers. When she refused to hand over her cash, one tried to stab her with a six-inch knife - only to have the blade turned by the chainmail she was wearing under her woolen cloak. She then drew her (very real) sword and said "I'll see your six, and raise you thirty-five!" before chasing the muggers off. A bard in the SCA afterwards wrote a humorous song about it, which has become quite popular.

      Raphael Lo the dussack or cutlass is meant for confined spaces, whereas the rapier is meant for open spaces and streets. Both are meant for unarmoured opponents, but that's even more true for the cutlass. If you want to ambush some gunman around a corner and disarm or kill him in one strike, then guess which one I'd recommend. If you got the space, then the more nimble, far longer rapier beats the dussack

    so you can't half-sword with it because it's curved, right? How do you fight against a plate mail opponent with a sword like this?

    they say these are hand forged, = why you have both the small imperfections in the hilt (lil dark spots) & the price, surprised they didn't make the guard press fitted though...

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Imperfections from forging can be removed, and I personally expect a more thorough finish for $600.

    • @blackdeath4eternity
      @blackdeath4eternity 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes forging imperfections can be removed (by removing more metal) which takes more time & would likely provide another $50 to the price , not justifying it, just stating how things normally work & just like with gas prices excreta its not something i as a consumer appreciate... but its still there. lol
      thanks for taking the time to reply, i honestly didn't expect it & was more so directing my comment to other commenters who seemed to think it should cost around $300
