This is dependent on how close you have you have the mic to your mouth, the closer it is the more boomy it can sound. 1-2 feet away is ideal. If you have a very natural bassy voice, you may try to use the Low Cut Filter settings to see which one works best for your voice to round it out. Hope this helps! This is really flexible, I wish it was around when I was looking for a run and gun shotgun solution a few years ago. What I've been using is a combination of purchases and repurposing stuff I already had laying around, now it's too integrated into my workflow to replace but this looks so much more brainless to set up and go. The safety track alone is pure gold and worth the cost.
Hey hey again James! It really is super flexible, I'm surprised with just how much RODE crammed into this one DSLR Shotgun mic. I don't think I'll have to much corporate gigs coming up anytime soon, but I do love the idea that I can now use this, boom it over them, safety track, straight into my Camera, and know that I don't have to deal with office noise from a wireless Omni Directional Mic.

Just got off set doing BTS for a friend, and I used a stereo splitter with a h1n and did basically exactly what you described at the end doing. Except shot gun left and wireless plugged into right and both out into camera. It's PROBABLY my fav way to record.

I have this mic too, and agree totally with your review- I love having the USB feature and that’s what justified spending the extra for me (as otherwise I’d probably have bought a videomicro and just ended up buying this later, as it’s to use with a Canon camera which needs a lot of signal) The rejection is so good I can boom it and use it for my podcast and it sounds as good as my SM58 mic for room rejection, just with more clarity.

I wonder, I don't have a specific cable to try, but if someone plugged it into their Android or Apple Phone or Tablet with a USB - C to USB C or USB - C to Lightning. I wonder if it recognizes it that way instead of using a TRRS to USBC adapter etc.

Gonna step up from my smartphone by year end & buy either a Canon R6 or the Sony A7IV (if rumours are true of a fall release). Using a Rode Videomicro right now, will be stepping up my audio too for sure. This looks just right for me IMO

It's me again. For the Rode NTG shotgun mic, if you are behind the mic does it pick up the sound or not at all? I've seen a review and someone was talking behind the mic but it picked up the sound (sounds muffled and not as clear but you can still hear what he is saying). I'm debating if I should get this or the Deity duo but I like the NTG much better but not sure if it can record sound if I'm behind the camera. Thanks!
Hey hey again Tan! Yes it will pick up a muffle sound behind the shotgun mic. All shotgun mics will pick up something but the freqencies will be muffled and not as loud since shotgun mics are designed to focus on the person speaking in front. If you are in need of hearing yourself behind and in front of the camera, then Deity Duo is currently the mic I would recommend for its size and abilities.
Do you have a dead cat that you like to use with the video mic ntg that isn’t the rode one? That ws11 will take too long to ship and deliver. Will the foam do fine outside??

It was something I had laying around, they do sell something like that on Amazon, just pay attention to what type of mic it is rated to work with so that you don't get one thats too long. hey, you are one of the three channels I always check before I buy gear. I bought the rode Go as well as a bunch of neewer lighting after seeing them on your vids. Could I ask you a question? I often have to film live theatre shows. Would the NTG work for those? Distance to the actors about 6 or 7 meters, live audience behind me. Up to now I just shot the audio with my 70d (which worked astonishingly well), and I am not sure if a Shotgun mic is the correct direction. I also think about the rode stereomic, but I would like to have the ability to reduce the audience noises. Thanks a lot for your quality content! (Especially, since you have experience for the acoustic needs of dance instructors, which was frankly the tipping point for me buying the rode go. I use your trick of putting the mic into the headband a lot, although with a historical cap.)

While the RODE NTG would help in being directional and focusing on whoever you are pointing at, I'm not too sure what that will sound like when you are that far away from the source. When I film theatre shows, usually the performers are already mic'd up so I just use an recorder and ask the sound booth to feed me a mix so that I get the cleanest sound possible. Since I never stop recording, I just match up the video and one audio file together and i'm good to go. If this is not possible and you are coming from just a 70d audio. This NTG will be an improvement for clarity. The RODE NTG also does great job lowing the sound you hear behind the mic, in a theatre setting I imagine it will basically be dead quiet behind the mic until they clap. Even then the clapping won't be as loud until you point the camera at the audience. While I can't say for sure what quality you will get from that far away. All I can say is that it will be cleaner sounding than just the 70d. The only thing you may miss out on is if someone talks on the far side of the stage and your camera isn't point that way. In which case that performs voice will be lowered cause the sound it hitting the side of the microphone. However if the theatre has speakers and everyone is mic'd up, you possibly may just want to consider the Rode stereo mic and then "Dual Mono" the audio when you render out the final video. This is all I can think of for now, really the big question is if the performs are mic'd up. In which cause I would suggest just investing in a XLR audio recorder, talk to the sound guy if he can send you a mix into your recorder. Thanks again for stopping by! @@TLDR_filmmaker Thanks for the great reply! I probably should have specified that the actors never are mic'd up, there is an austere severity that Real Actors (TM) need to speak without a mic. I understand that somewhat, I prefer hearing which person is speaking to having a speaker making spacial placing impossible. I know that a really good audio guy can make this possible, but the shows I film usually cannot go to such extremes. Thanks again for the answer!

Hey hey again Sandy! So in this specific video, I did not do any post processing. You were hearing me in a bare non-sound treated room with a bare wall right in front of me and to the side of me within arms reach. In my normal videos, with this mic (its my youtube mic now), I just do a light compression with some make up gain, and then activate a "Noise Gate" to kind of lower any ambient noise if any. Put a limiter just in case. And thats it, I don't EQ my voice at all as I feel the Rode NTG already favors my type of low grumble voice. Hope this helps!
Ever since I bought the VideoMic NTG, I pretty much stopped using my Rode VideoMic Pro+. I think I'm gonna sell the VideoMic Pro+ since I need to clear up some space in my office. LOL
MrHenggggggg! I'm probably going to buy more of these eventually and deploy them in dialogue scenes that don't require the actors to move too much. Its such a clean signal and can do so much at the price point. Works perfectly for our teams quick setup style on our narrative sets.

Hi I have an older canon t5i but I heard the audio still isn’t great when connecting to a mic. Is it the same with the Ntg? Is it better to record with the mic separate from the camera?

When it comes to the T5i, this NTG mic will do better with it because it has its own power source and the output can go quite high. The older canon cameras needed a high power mic to get past its noisy noise floor at higher mic level settings. But, in general with older canon cameras, a second audio recorder is always going to be the better bet for that generation. Thanks again for stopping by! Good mic. Though no option to change battery makes the mic just a waste of money. Good quality mics last for ages. This one would last only for so many hours. Especially when using it daily. And when the battery degrades it wouldn't be able to last enough for a day out. It's a pity that such a great mic is really killed by the integrated battery. There should be a way to manually replace battery to not make the mic obsolete when it dies.
Hey hey Michael! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! If I remember correctly, I think RODE does have a battery replacement program for this mic. I don't disagree with you, there is much to be said to have a traditional Shotgun that is powered by Phantom Power from the recorder and you'll just never have to worry about the internal battery etc. However, depending on the creative, with the amount of times that I use it per week and will need to recharge, I have a feeling this mic may last me quite a few years. I will have to follow up as the years go on to see if I notice it not lasting more than 12 hours and that it won't stay on the "Green LED" very long. The intelligent power on and off feature really gives me the piece of mind that I won't accidentally leave this on after a recording session, which in turn will further the longevity of the battery. I’ve been on the fence to getting one. I moved my Video Mic Pro+ to use with my laptop when I’m on WebEx calls. In the back of my mind I know I’m going to forget it when I need it and have use my backup Movo VXR10 (rode video micro clone)
Hey hey again IMDABROWN! I've never used a VideoMic Pro+ but I do remember looking into that series of mics back in the day, definitely still a great mic for creatives that already own it. I think for the time being keep using it until it breaks, as it probably doesn't make too much sense to upgrade between the two unless there is a specific feature that would have saved you on a shoot or use case.

What if I leave the Rode NTG permanently connected to my computer via USB? Will that degrade the NTG battery? I assume it will because my computer is on all day when I work and it'll probably trickle charge the NTG battery, just like when you leave a laptop connected to the wall socket. I'm hoping this isn't the case though, hence why I'm asking.

The reason is I need to wait until I drain the battery completely and then plug it into my computer and let it enter USB MIC mode, leave it there for a an hour and see what my battery level is at afterwards. My guess however is it will charge it because the battery is dead. I don't think it will cut off the battery just because it is being used as a USB mic. I'll be curious to see what RODE responds to you, as this would definitely be a feature they should have considered if they haven't already. Thanks again for stopping by! While I don't quite know your situation the only thing that I can think of is, "Would you rather go straight into your camera vs doing a dual audio setup and syncing in post. Thats the main question to ask, the 2nd would be if any of the additional features make a difference to your current workflow. Cause the Videomicro is already quite good, maybe you just need the RODE SC8 extension cable to reach it to your subject (pending your cameras preamp is sensitive enough to keep the pre-amps down). The reason I say this is because of the Andycine M1 that I reviewed not too long ago. I'm not sure if the Videomic Pro + has RF interference when plugged into a 2.4ghz wireless transmitter. I recently used my RODE Wireless GO II one plugged into the Videomic NTG and the other lav'd up to the subject, they worked perfectly together. My Sony Audio level was at +1 at the time, I have recently switched over to +3 because I discovered that there is some sort of electronic limiter that hit's too early when you're at +1. The limiter is raised higher when using +3. I don't notice much difference in noise floor between the two. The added benefit so far is that I now have a higher Signal to Noise ratio than before. For me I tell my editor to determine the audio as "dual Mono" and that way I can edit the Left or Right channel how I like. I have this mic too, and agree totally with your review- I love having the USB feature and that’s what justified spending the extra for me (as otherwise I’d probably have bought a videomicro and just ended up buying this later, as it’s to use with a Canon camera which needs a lot of signal) The rejection is so good I can boom it and use it for my podcast and it sounds as good as my SM58 mic for room rejection, just with more clarity.

It is crazy how many things RODE shoved into this microphone, it would be nuts if they expanded this idea into their longer shotgun mics and even the Micro. I'm not sure if having that much circuitry interferes with the sound being captured. My ears have not been trained enough to hear certain things that dedicated sound operators can hear. I'm excited to see what RODE continues to do, they've put out some really awesome tools in the last year between the Rode Wireless Go and this Videomic NTG!

I love recording voiceovers on final cut with it. That usb feature is awesome and is very quiet.
I wonder, I don't have a specific cable to try, but if someone plugged it into their Android or Apple Phone or Tablet with a USB - C to USB C or USB - C to Lightning. I wonder if it recognizes it that way instead of using a TRRS to USBC adapter etc.
I love mine with my Fuji X-t30. Setting on camera at - 30 and ntg on 8. Wonderful sound quality. I also use it for zoom meeting and it sounds great.

It's me again. For the Rode NTG shotgun mic, if you are behind the mic does it pick up the sound or not at all? I've seen a review and someone was talking behind the mic but it picked up the sound (sounds muffled and not as clear but you can still hear what he is saying). I'm debating if I should get this or the Deity duo but I like the NTG much better but not sure if it can record sound if I'm behind the camera. Thanks!

Yes it will pick up a muffle sound behind the shotgun mic. All shotgun mics will pick up something but the freqencies will be muffled and not as loud since shotgun mics are designed to focus on the person speaking in front. If you are in need of hearing yourself behind and in front of the camera, then Deity Duo is currently the mic I would recommend for its size and abilities.
Do you have a dead cat that you like to use with the video mic ntg that isn’t the rode one? That ws11 will take too long to ship and deliver. Will the foam do fine outside??

In this test I had a slip on deadcat that goes onto the foam instead of it being its own separate thing. It was something I had laying around, they do sell something like that on Amazon, just pay attention to what type of mic it is rated to work with so that you don't get one thats too long. hey, you are one of the three channels I always check before I buy gear. I bought the rode Go as well as a bunch of neewer lighting after seeing them on your vids.
Could I ask you a question? I often have to film live theatre shows. Would the NTG work for those? Distance to the actors about 6 or 7 meters, live audience behind me.
Up to now I just shot the audio with my 70d (which worked astonishingly well), and I am not sure if a Shotgun mic is the correct direction.
I also think about the rode stereomic, but I would like to have the ability to reduce the audience noises.

While the RODE NTG would help in being directional and focusing on whoever you are pointing at, I'm not too sure what that will sound like when you are that far away from the source. When I film theatre shows, usually the performers are already mic'd up so I just use an recorder and ask the sound booth to feed me a mix so that I get the cleanest sound possible. Since I never stop recording, I just match up the video and one audio file together and i'm good to go. If this is not possible and you are coming from just a 70d audio. This NTG will be an improvement for clarity. The RODE NTG also does great job lowing the sound you hear behind the mic, in a theatre setting I imagine it will basically be dead quiet behind the mic until they clap. Even then the clapping won't be as loud until you point the camera at the audience.
While I can't say for sure what quality you will get from that far away. All I can say is that it will be cleaner sounding than just the 70d. The only thing you may miss out on is if someone talks on the far side of the stage and your camera isn't point that way. In which case that performs voice will be lowered cause the sound it hitting the side of the microphone. However if the theatre has speakers and everyone is mic'd up, you possibly may just want to consider the Rode stereo mic and then "Dual Mono" the audio when you render out the final video.
This is all I can think of for now, really the big question is if the performs are mic'd up. In which cause I would suggest just investing in a XLR audio recorder, talk to the sound guy if he can send you a mix into your recorder.

I understand that somewhat, I prefer hearing which person is speaking to having a speaker making spacial placing impossible. I know that a really good audio guy can make this possible, but the shows I film usually cannot go to such extremes.

So in this specific video, I did not do any post processing. You were hearing me in a bare non-sound treated room with a bare wall right in front of me and to the side of me within arms reach. In my normal videos, with this mic (its my youtube mic now), I just do a light compression with some make up gain, and then activate a "Noise Gate" to kind of lower any ambient noise if any. Put a limiter just in case. And thats it, I don't EQ my voice at all as I feel the Rode NTG already favors my type of low grumble voice. Hope this helps!

When it comes to the T5i, this NTG mic will do better with it because it has its own power source and the output can go quite high. The older canon cameras needed a high power mic to get past its noisy noise floor at higher mic level settings. But, in general with older canon cameras, a second audio recorder is always going to be the better bet for that generation.

Good mic. Though no option to change battery makes the mic just a waste of money. Good quality mics last for ages. This one would last only for so many hours. Especially when using it daily. And when the battery degrades it wouldn't be able to last enough for a day out. It's a pity that such a great mic is really killed by the integrated battery. There should be a way to manually replace battery to not make the mic obsolete when it dies.

If I remember correctly, I think RODE does have a battery replacement program for this mic. I don't disagree with you, there is much to be said to have a traditional Shotgun that is powered by Phantom Power from the recorder and you'll just never have to worry about the internal battery etc. However, depending on the creative, with the amount of times that I use it per week and will need to recharge, I have a feeling this mic may last me quite a few years. I will have to follow up as the years go on to see if I notice it not lasting more than 12 hours and that it won't stay on the "Green LED" very long. The intelligent power on and off feature really gives me the piece of mind that I won't accidentally leave this on after a recording session, which in turn will further the longevity of the battery. We shall see in 5 years for sure!

I’ve been on the fence to getting one. I moved my Video Mic Pro+ to use with my laptop when I’m on WebEx calls. In the back of my mind I know I’m going to forget it when I need it and have use my backup Movo VXR10 (rode video micro clone)

I've never used a VideoMic Pro+ but I do remember looking into that series of mics back in the day, definitely still a great mic for creatives that already own it. I think for the time being keep using it until it breaks, as it probably doesn't make too much sense to upgrade between the two unless there is a specific feature that would have saved you on a shoot or use case.

What if I leave the Rode NTG permanently connected to my computer via USB? Will that degrade the NTG battery?
I assume it will because my computer is on all day when I work and it'll probably trickle charge the NTG battery, just like when you leave a laptop connected to the wall socket.
I'm hoping this isn't the case though, hence why I'm asking.

Unfortunately I can't answer the question at this very moment, you may be able to get a direct answer from RODE. The reason is I need to wait until I drain the battery completely and then plug it into my computer and let it enter USB MIC mode, leave it there for a an hour and see what my battery level is at afterwards.
My guess however is it will charge it because the battery is dead. I don't think it will cut off the battery just because it is being used as a USB mic.
I'll be curious to see what RODE responds to you, as this would definitely be a feature they should have considered if they haven't already.

Essentially you need to "dual mono" each channel (Left and Right) so that you can go in and adjust each channel independently. If you're not using FCPX like I am, simply do a google search on how to Dual Mono your audio with your NLE program.

While I don't quite know your situation the only thing that I can think of is, "Would you rather go straight into your camera vs doing a dual audio setup and syncing in post. Thats the main question to ask, the 2nd would be if any of the additional features make a difference to your current workflow. Cause the Videomicro is already quite good, maybe you just need the RODE SC8 extension cable to reach it to your subject (pending your cameras preamp is sensitive enough to keep the pre-amps down). The reason I say this is because of the Andycine M1 that I reviewed not too long ago. For me the RODE Videomic NTG is the best because of all the features it has compared to the older Videomic Pro+. I'm not sure if the Videomic Pro + has RF interference when plugged into a 2.4ghz wireless transmitter. I recently used my RODE Wireless GO II one plugged into the Videomic NTG and the other lav'd up to the subject, they worked perfectly together. My fear is that the Videomic Pro+ would have RF interference in this type of setup.

My Sony Audio level was at +1 at the time, I have recently switched over to +3 because I discovered that there is some sort of electronic limiter that hit's too early when you're at +1. The limiter is raised higher when using +3. I don't notice much difference in noise floor between the two. The added benefit so far is that I now have a higher Signal to Noise ratio than before.

Most definitely, if its a sit down interview and you just want to boom this mic over the speaker and have it either go into your recorder or DSLR. Activate the safe track just in case (pending that your camera has a stereo mic jack) and you will have a very nice small setup with great audio!

It depends on the editor you're using. For me I tell my editor to determine the audio as "dual Mono" and that way I can edit the Left or Right channel how I like. Heres a brief video of what I do, it'll give you an idea of what I mean. th-cam.com/video/3mtGjRTQL5w/w-d-xo.html
Ultimately what you're trying to do is convert your audio into a dual mono so that when you are done with everything your sound will come out on both left and right channels evenly.
