A few tips from a (former) mechanic. To prime the fuel lines, don't pump the gas petal. That doesn't cause more fuel to flow when the truck is off. Turn the ignition to run without cranking it, leave it there for a few seconds, turn it off and repeat. This turns on the electric fuel pump to pressurize the lines, but the pump only runs for a few seconds before shutting off so you might need to repeat it 3-5 times before the lines are full of fuel.
More importantly, it makes sense to me that the truck would run better on a lower % alcohol. Gasoline has additives that raise the octane level of fuel. Most people think octane means the fuel burns better, but that's actually completely backwards. Octane makes fuel harder to burn. This is important because the spark plug tips, fuel injector tips, pistons and cylinder walls get so hot that they can ignite the fuel without a spark if the fuel burns too easily. To keep from writing an essay, I will leave it at that and just say that the higher alcohol content was causing the fuel to ignite prematurely due to high temps inside the engine which is also why it ran better after sitting for a bit, the engine was allowed to cool off.
Also, I'll add, people please don't waste your money. Buy the fuel recommended for your vehicle. I don't want anyone getting the wrong takeaway from what I said. Modern vehicles adjust fuel mixtures based on the temp of the engine. High octane fuel makes that harder, meaning it not only cost more but will also lower your MPG (KPL for non-Muricas?) and leads to more wear on the vehicle in the long run if your vehicle isn't designed to run on it.

I'm with you for most of your information but ethanol is 109 octane, it's not lower than gasoline and isn't going to be setting off premature ignition

I was forced to use everclear in my dads old '70 chevy. I didn't have enough gas to make it back to town and one of my buddies drank that crap, so we had a bunch. He always bought a new bottle for every party, drank a little, then passed out. I had about three mostly full bottles rolling around under the seat. I dumped it in, mixing it with a little bit of gas at the bottom of the tank. It made it to town, but it didn't like it. My dad didn't like it, either. It burned out the valves because alcohol burns hotter than gas. It also burned up the plugs. Then, for the coup de grasse, the alcohol reacted with the gas to loosen up every bit of gunk in the bottom of the gas tank. I had to drain the system, replace the fuel filter and the mechanical fuel pump because it was all gummed up. After nearly rebuilding it, it ran pretty good, but i never tried that BS again. My dad beat my ass and promised to do it again if i screwed up his truck again. That ass whuppin' has stuck with me to this day and watching your video actually made me cringe a little. Lol!

    A. Pushing the gas pedal down on port injected engines doesn't add gas. The ecu measures the air intake which is what the gas pedal is controlling, and adds fuel. To prime it simply turn the ignition on and let the pump build pressure. Pushing the pedal adds air not gas and air is the last thing it needs.
    B. Ethanol only has about 66% of the energy compared to gas. It's possible your fuel pump can't pump enough fuel, it's not a flammable problem is a not enough flow problem.
    C. If your fuel pump can pump enough it's going to take time for the ecu to figure out it needs to pump 1 part fuel to 10 parts air instead of 1 part gas to 14 parts air.
    D. get an OBD2 Bluetooth and watch and A/F ratio, MAF, and Fuel pressure, and O2.
Again though, it's not a flammability problem it's a not getting enough fuel problem because either the computer doesn't know how much to add because it wasn't programmed to change for the lower energy fuel or your fuel pump/system can't supply the engine with the requested amount.

Also, if the engine is flooded, FI systems have the same solution as carbs. Hold the pedal to the floor during cranking, and no fuel will be injected to allow the excess fuel to clear.

When you run on any form of alcohol in an automotive engine, and you do not want the engine to melt down as it eventually will, you need to change the heat range of the spark plugs, and increase the air flow both in and out of the engine. I have a neighbor that races an alcohol drag bike at the salt flats. And even his bike melted the pistons, from the wrong heat range on the spark plugs. Also if it still has the catalytic converter the converter depending on the type will melt down as well. And you also have to adjust the timming to match the fuel.

Here's my theory: Alcohol (ethanol) needs an air-fuel ratio of around 9:1. Gasoline is 16:1 (ish). Since the danger ranger is expecting gasoline, it's not pumping enough into the engine for it to burn properly, so it's running super lean on the everclear (which is almost 80% pure ethanol and some water).
The vodka is only 40% ethanol. So while it was made up of 60% water, it was a lower concentration of ethanol, which probably made it closer to the 16:1 ratio that the truck needs vs. the everclear.

Outside temperature could also play a role here, since colder air means the oxygen will be less prone to react with the alcohol compared to if it were hotter. The engine might also get a little hotter if the temperature rose, which could help also.

Back in the 70's we added Everclear to our fuel for a cheap power boost. Once it reached the engine you had better be ready with a screwdriver to turn down the idle at the carb idle speed screw. Dumping a bottle into the tank of someone else's car was also a common way to mess with people, watch their face as their engine suddenly started to race, car wanting to take off if in gear. Never did this with a fuel injected computer controlled engine. You would need to reset the computer (and possibly change out injectors) to properly handle the Everclear, or at least run a blend of gas and Everclear long enough for the computer to start to figure out the needed adjustments. For the record you should add more than a gallon to an empty tank to ensure the pickup tube in the tank can suck up a steady supply of fuel for the engine. And pumping the pedal does not prime a fuel injected engine (or any engine that's been run dry), you need to let the electronic fuel pump prime the system before you crank it over. Try this test again, this time with an older carburetor fuel system-ed engine (no computer or injection system). Crank the engine over a few time so the mechanical fuel pump can prime the system (you can pump the peddle while doing this) or simply dump a little Everclear down the throat of the carb and fire it up. A couple moments of adjusting the fuel mixture screws will then give you top performance but it will still run even if you don't.

What this tells me is that the vodka is more akin to gasoline in its flammability, meaning that the Everclear burns hotter. This means that the air fuel ratio is off. Kinda makes me wonder if a flex fuel vehicle would be a better candidate for this experiment when it comes to Everclear. To correct this, you may also consider a carbureted vehicle, preferably one with a Holley 4 barrel that has the availability of a jetting kit that will allow you to adjust the air fuel ratio more accurately. There are jet kits for running alcohol as well. Great video, thank you for sharing.

To prime, cycle key switch a couple times since prime mode for pump happens on key on for a few seconds before start. Pedal pumping on fuel injected just opens flap for more air and the computer adjust fuel/air radio using oxygen sensor. The high alcohol content just makes it run lean mostly almost like it’s out of gas because it can add enough “fuel” quick enough according to the programing. A flex fuel vehicle might be able to correct the lean conditions better. You can also use the fuel pump to pump the fuel out faster by overriding the pump relay with the fuel line disconnected. Love the videos and thanks for the experiments to keep us entertained!!

It's running very lean for alcohol, that's why you hear it popping through the intake.
Try just throwing about 30~40% higher flowing injectors in it or turn the base fuel pressure way up.
Seems to me like when it's half running it's probably in closed loop and trying its hardest to get to stoich but the ecu doesn't allow for enough fuel trim, then when you meet the conditions to leave closed loop it immediately falls on its face.
((Looks to be a mid 90s ranger so pumping the accelerator isn't going to prime it, if anything holding it down too far while cranking might put it into a flood clear mode turning the injectors off))

it might run if its was flexfuel truck one that can run on e85 bc e85 is mostly alcohol. it is possible to make engines that run on pure alcohol ethanol or methanol but there must be no money in it which is why the government is pushing battery cars

    • @RemKureko
      @RemKureko 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@tylercox1875 all a flex fuel system is doing is adding fuel depending on ethanol content and adding timing to take advantage of the extra octane.
He'd basically be manual doing that by putting larger injectors in but not getting the timing benefits.

I also wonder if the Danger Ranger would run better on 190 proof. One other thought: All that alcohol might have dissolved some deposits in the tank and now you're pumping some bad stuff into the carburetor or injectors. Might be worth a look - check plugs also? putting the ignition on accessory (right before the initiation of starter) runs the fuel pump a bit (you can hear it.) do that ( on, off, on, off, on, off) over and over again, then start the car to pull every little drop out of the tank/line / pressurize the system. also "priming" a vehicle only works with carbonated vehicles. with fuel injected vehicles, it does nothing. youre just opening and closing the butterfly (if its by physical wire. does nothing if electronic)

If you want to burn alternate fuels like Ethanol or Everclear, or Naptha or Stove fuel... you have to know what the octane rating... and you need to know the air to fuel combustion ratio for the specific fuel you are using, and also the burn temperature for your fuel.
We need to understand how these fuels work when you mix them also. Everclear, or ethanol ( pure grain alcohol ) has an octane rating of 113 ) Generally regular unleaded gasoline without 10% percent Ethanol has an octane rating of 85. Regular gasoline with 10% Ethanol has an octane rating of between 87 and 88 octane... and Premium gasoline without 10% ethanol is usually about 96 octane and with 10% Ethanol it it 98 octane. On average if you use a ratio of 10 to 1 gasoline to alcohol respectively you will increase octant rating by 2 digits.
So to begin with if you are going to run Ethanol or Everclear or whatever kind of grain alcohol... you might need to adjust your ignition timing to accommodate the fuel change... and there is no doubt that you are going to need to adjust the air to fuel mixture... the reason the fuel won't run is it is not getting the correct amount of oxygen to fuel ratio..
Another HUGE problem is when you are running straight Alcohol... is fuel engine knock and danger of destroying valves or plastic and rubber components of the fuel system... also the absence of lead... specifically tetra ethyl lead in the fuel which works as a valve lubricant, and is equally important in stopping engine knock. Alcohol is far less volatile that gasoline... or less sensitive, it is harder to ignite... especially at low temperatures, so doing this experiment in the middle of summer might give you. a slightly better result... but to get premium response from your engine, you may need to install a fuel heater in addition to tweaking the timing and oxygen to fuel ration. Gasoline engines are regulated by sensors and many mechanical means that are calibrated specifically for they type of fuel being used... Some conversions are simple, and can be set up where you can switch fuel types fairly easily... for example Natural Gas (methane) and (Propane ) can be used to operate ordinary combustion engines... so can Hydrogen, Alcohol, many Stove and lantern fuels, Lacquer thinner, Naphtha and so on. But each of these alternative fuels present engine wear problems, heat problems, combustion problems, and power and efficiency problems if you just put them in the fuel tank without making modifications that allow the alternate fuels to be used to their full potential.
Hope some of this information help you in future experiments with that poor truck LOL
Thumbs up for the video, it was entertaining.

Okay, here's what to do: Get an E85 vehicle like my 2003 Suburban, figure out the fuel capacity (figuring it in litres wil be easier), divide by 100 and then buy that amount of premium gasoline. Add that, followed by how ever many bottles of everclear are required to get 85% ethanol. Everclear should be everclear, but it's not all alike. Here in Houston, when I go to Spec's and buy everclear, it comes in different sizes, from flak to one-gallon glass gripper, but it all says 198 proof. I don't know why your everclear is so low quality, but I'd say if there's a type with flowers on the label, get that. I used to dump a gallon of everclear in my father's 2006 Silverado and run the tank through before getting it inspected. So, yes it will run on everclear, just not dressed-up vodka calling itself everclear..

    • @ColonelSandersLite
      @ColonelSandersLite 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

"I don't know why your everclear is so low quality"
I'm gonna say it's one of two reasons.
A - Various state laws limit the maximum proofing in various jurisdictions. Everclear sells whatever local laws allow. This is most likely the case here.
B - Even in places with looser restrictions, everclear is sometimes sold at various strengths with matching price tags. It's *possible* he isn't all that familiar with the stuff and didn't know about the proof difference. I kind of doubt it though as he was probably explicitly looking at the concentrations for the experiment.
