    I went from a level 4 red/brown with years of box dye and red pigment to a level 10 ash blonde and it took me so many hours of research to figure it out by myself. I kept applying purple toners to my head with no result and I found out I actually needed blue. I got blue shampoo and a blue base toner and it canceled out my orange. And kept researching and going up until I was that classic " pale yellow" you need for the wella toners and now I couldn't be happier.i wish this video was out when I was going through these motions! So informative.

    This explains so much! Thank you so much! I'm going to be doing a "crazy" color soon so now I know if I want it to pop I need something in the blue-violet family to cancel out my yellows to get the right level of green I'm aiming for. When I bleached my hair I ended up with a lot of yellow left over just due to me being naturally dark blonde. This is really going to help me get what I want.

      @@nvennhairbeauty I was able to get an amazing emerald green. It looks so good! This really helped me out. I love how good it came out. It had been at least since I last did serious painting that I thought about color theory and I had no idea that the same principles would apply to hair. It was seriously fascinating!

    Your informative video is well done my only suggestion is to leave original hair samples so that toned samples can be compared.

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi sally! thank you for your suggestion! there’s so many different shades of yellow & orange. a toner will always look different especially with different colour lines, so the hair samples won’t fully work. when unsure, use a swatch test :) take a piece of hair and test a tiny piece of hair underneath

  • @TheSim1derful
    @TheSim1derful 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for the excellent colour theory video, I appreciated it so much. Unfortunately, I'm still not quite sure about what to do with my hair so I'm gonna ask here if you read these comments. I had light silver hair and I used a bleach bath (with a 1:2 ratio and 20 volume developer) to strip out the toner and leave my hair pale yellow to tone to white.
    To my surprise, the bleach bath pulled out the silvery purple toner, leaving a cotton candy pink, and finally settling on a very pale peach colour! I can only assume these were under pigments in the toner that I didn't know were in there. So, my question: my hair is now VERY light, definitely a level 10 at least. However, it's also got a distinct peach hue. Do I
    a) wait a week or so and do another bleach bath and hope that removes the faint peach?
    b) tone with a toner to remove the peach? If so, would I go with a blue or a violet toner? The hair is extremely light, so it's not that standard "hair hasn't lifted enough so it's still orange" orange.
    Thank you so much in advance!! I love your channel

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi thesim1derful - thank you for the AMAZING comment. we really appreciate it and love connecting with new people on our channel!
      it’s really tough - definitely don’t bleach it again. since it’s light enough, you don’t need to bleach it again. you need to the right toner. once it’s light enough you only need toner to correct it. it’s hard to suggest a toner because i need to be able to see it in person and know what the desired outcome is so i can properly formulate it. my advice is to go to a colour correction expert that way they don’t try to bleach it out and correct it with a toner.
      wish i was able to be of more help but unfortunately in these cases it’s really hard to suggest something without seeing the hair in person.

    What color toner should I use on silver hair to make it white?
    Just had my hair done from a golden blonde. The toner was a silver color - on for a few minutes and my hair turned out more silver than white in some areas. I would like white all over. How can I accomplish that and using Matrix - which color should I get?

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi dsabia1 - thank you for your question! it depends how white or how silver your hair is. we recommend letting the extra tone to fade out first so it’s fairly even then pick a toner that isn’t so ashy. the hair is very porous so in those areas, it’s absorbing more toner than the rest. in the areas that are silver, you will need to use a neutral toner and the areas that are white, you will need to use light ash. you will need to be careful of spotting and you will probably have to use two timers. it’s best to go to a local salon to get that professionally formulated. it’s hard to say without seeing the hair in person. hope that helps ❤️

    this is a great video.. i wish this came into my life earlier.. now i've dyed it so light, it's so broken up, i no longer dare to dye it, because every time i tried, it sucks up all the color immediately.. so now i'm just using toner shampoos and have figured out a way to make it seem like a natural dark ashy to normal to warm blonde, depending on the day.. but i wish to dye it a little darker soon again, but like i said, it sucks up sooo much color, especially the ends, that i'm a bit hesitant .. could you give me a tip on how to deal with that, because even though the shampooing is giving me great results in the short run, it's becoming a bit time consuming...

    So if your hair is orange after bleaching, blue toner is best correct? I have previously dyed hair I'm trying to lighten with a bleach wash to go red.

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi kimberly! blue is the best toner to neutralize orange however if you are going red, you may want to leave a bit of the orange to have more of a violety red, but if you want a fiery red you may not want to neutralize it and leave it as the undertone depending how orange, if it’s too orange it will look more copper. so it ultimately depends on how orange it is and what you want the final product to look like

  • @mirandab0807
    @mirandab0807 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So I have naturally dark brown hair which is dyed really dark brown. I want to go to a light ash brown. I've done it before but I never used a toner so it ended up an orangish blondish light brown color lol. So this time I want to lighten it and then use a toner. Can you recommend a good toner I can use at home right after bleaching so that I can then dye it to a light/medium ash brown? I was looking at the wella toners but can't figure out which one to get. Last time I lightened it (the same way as I'll be doing this time) it ended up yellow at my roots and the rest of my hair orange. Will a toner help even it out as well so I can get an even color after I dye it the final color I'm looking to get, or should I bleach the orange part a 2nd time and just avoid re bleaching my roots? Last time it came out looking okay but my roots were much lighter than the rest of my hair and it still had a brassy orange tint to it because I didn't use any sort of toner. I'm planning to use a light brown ash shade which last time did help to cancel some of the orange color. But since my roots were yellow and the rest of my hair orange it makes it confusing on which toner to use. Any suggestions from anyone would be great.
    Also, should I lighten, tone and then dye it the color I want, or lighten, dye it and then tone it to get rid of whatever is left of the brassy/orange? Since the ash shade does cancel some of it out on its own without using a toner.

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi miranda! thank you for your message 😊 we do not recommend doing it at home! that’s a major color correction - even though you’re bringing it back to one colour it could have three different bands of colours (based on what you’re describing) which could require 3 different toners. to paint a better picture of this, we recommend you watch our video of one of our clients chayla who went from box dye blonde back to brunette. the video can be found here: th-cam.com/video/H_cENN5b3sA/w-d-xo.html

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi sreypoeu - we’ve actually never used the matrix line so im not completely sure. no matter what line you use, orange is used to cancel out blue. if you’re a natural level 3 and want to go to a level 6, the undertone of a level 6 is a red-orange. it would be best to ask your local matrix rep 😊

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      no green would make the red less red but not more natural in my opinion. to me, a natural color is something that someone can be born with so if the person wanted a natural looking red, I would lean more to a copper color not red as the main pigment.

      hellllooooo how are you? thats a tricky question to answer lol because there is no definite answer. the type of bleach and the volume of peroxide would be completely dependant on what your hair looks like to start with. it depends on whether the hair has artificial color on it, what the natural level is, etc. truthfully, i have been doing hair for 13 years and I still wouldn't bleach my own hair lol. its really difficult to apply it so that it is really blended and any overlapping would cause the hair to break. is there a stylist that could help you with it?

    Hi the last bit you said about putting pigment back in like a bit of 8yellow then 7 orange until you cover all the pigments to level 5 . Do you put all those pigment together on top of each other on the hair, like from seperate bowls? Or do you mix all pigment levels in one bowl then put it on the hair?
    By the way love your videos on your different colour corrections, visually learn better.

    My hair is somewhat yellow so do I tone it with a purple toner? Then tone it with an ashy violet toner? Also a different question so my hair is at a level 9/8 can I tone with a darker toner how will it come out?
    Sorry I’m still to all of this

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ask away! we are here to help! violet for sure if it is yellow. the darker the yellow, the darker the purple needs to be. the problem with "yellow" hair is that there tends to be "banding (different shades of yellow to white...some darker than others). to truly even out your color, each band needs to be formulated for differentlt.
      if you tone your hair darker it will look darker. just to clarify, a tone/pigment (violet) can come is all lightness and darkness (level 1 to 10). if you stay within the same level, it'll just neutralize your color. if you go darker, then it will be darker.
      hopefully that helps💕💕

    So let’s say a client has highlights that have grown out and are between a level 8&9 and wants to go down to a level 3 could you just do a formula that has yellow orange, red orange, and red velvet or would you have to put a little of each individual color from yellow to violet? Hope my question makes sense... and also would you put that fill color from the new growth all the way down to the ends or just where the highlights are?
    If you see this thank you so much for making videos like this!! I just graduated from cosmetology school and I really appreciate videos like this because I have a long way to go in becoming a good hairdresser lol!

      your question totally makes sense and you know a lot more than you give yourself credit for. the detail of your question tells me that you understand what you are watching✅👌. you can do either, the first way is easier because you are mixing less things together! the formula just needs the pigment, it doesn't care where the pigment comes from😎. GREAT QUESTION!

    Great video... I want to have pure white hair... not even a bit yellow or a bit grey... My hair is naturally white but has a tiny bit of dark hair in a couple of spots... so I want to make all my hair pure white... I tried L'Oreal Feria Absolute Platinum... but then stupidly put on L'Oreal color Scandinavie #10 and it turned ashy... then faded to ultra pale blonde... Ugh! ... I wonder if I need to add a toner after the bleach? I think I will try the Absolute Platinum again now... My hair is waist-length and I have to do it myself at home as I can't afford to go to a Salon... Wish me luck!

      Thanks for your reply dear... Yes, so yesterday after writing to you I did use the L'Oreal Feria Absolute Platinum again... as my hair was grown out about 3 inches... As I mentioned, my own hair is now nearly all white... so just a few spots of dark hair that I like to eliminate so the colour is close as possible to evenly white. I am 73 and trying to get my hair to grow long enough to sit on at least... I don't have Instagram... wish I could show you how it turned out... just perfect! The purple conditioner that came with the boxed bleach toned my hair so that it is wonderfully white with no yellow... I found that the consistency of the product when mixed this time was a lot thicker than last time I used the same product so I was in near panic mode that I would not have enough product to do my waist length hair... but really I only needed to get the dark new growth bleached out... After applying it to the new growth I just worked on it so that I could get the whole length covered in product... I waited a bit before doing the length so that the roots got about 30 minutes and the rest about 20 minutes as I did not want to damage my hair... I have little to no split ends. I am quite happy with how this product works...

      Hi! I don’t think I have won... I would have been way more excited!
      I’m not a stylist! Since COVID, and since my daughter and I have blond hair but are truly a level 5-6, I had to go on a journey to self-education by watching endless hours of styling videos. I learned about « Olaplex », for that, I wish I were a stylist to get my hands on it for my bleached blond hair😂 I have used « Bond Angel » instead and it seems to do the trick. I’m really proud of my end results. Thank you for showing me that becoming a stylist is truly an art and mostly an ongoing process... a true artist never stops learning new things. With love ❤️

    So I have naturally dark brown hair. I had my hair highlighted but she didn’t use a toner. When I got home I realized one part was a little orange towards the front and the rest warm, yellowy. I wanted a cool blonde. I have an appointment to go back but how does she fix it if I’ll need a blue toner on one area and a purple toner on the rest? Thanks for this super informative video and any feedback is appreciated!

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes you're exactly right. that being said, if you want a cool blonde, you probably need to be lifted a bit lighter. a toner will neutralize the excessive warmth but at the end of the day, the color orange can only look so ashy if you know what I mean. some colors are definitely a 2 step process though so in that case the solution you had is the best solution.

    I am a natural light brown/dark blonde (caramel color.) When I use dark ash blonde, it turns a dark muddy color? Why? You mentioned that if you are going darker, unless you add in the color, it will turn muddy. How does this apply to me on a lighter shade? I guess what I am asking is the color I need to add back in, so it doesn't turn muddy?

    • @nvennhairbeauty

      The formula would depend on what level your hair is and what level you want to be. Do you know the level your hair is? I always recommend for color corrections to be done in a salon, if it's not formulated properly it can be a nightmare to strip out afterwards xoxo

  • @sterlinglewis484

    Thanks for the info on depositing color. What is recommended if I am taking someone from a level 9 to a true level 1? Will I need to process multiple times? Or mix levels and process at one time to deposit the color before I add the level 1 to her hair?

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would mix everything together and do it at once. That being said, a level 9 and a level 1 are on complete opposite sides of the spectrum so you might need to fill it twice. But what I would do it fill it once and put the level 1 on. IF by chance its not looking completely saturated, then color it a second time with the level 1😃

    How do you know if the toner is purple, blue, or green?

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi michelle :) that would depend on the color line you're using. as a general rule, A (for ash or a 1 in the number system) in most lines is ash which is usually green based, V for violet or a 2 in the number system is violet, and B (for blue and number will vary)... things to consider is that each color line has a different base etc. the best thing to do is try to find a color educator for the line you are working with. which line are you using? maybe we have worked with it before and would know. :)

    • @nvennhairbeauty

      i'm not sure if you can mix the box dye in with the red filler. just using red will be better than nothing but to have a true level 4 you also need to replace the orange and yellow/ gold that is lost. i did that exact color correction here in this video if you want to watch it. th-cam.com/video/H_cENN5b3sA/w-d-xo.html

    Planning to use wella 7a demi perminant colour to go from a brassy light blonde to my natural colour (ashy light brown). My hair is already yellowish (level 9 yellow and level 8 orange yellow and parts might be level 7 orangy yellow) however the ends are very light blonde and white ish bits. The color 7a is level 7 and a very blue ashy shade.
    Do you think its wise to do a yellow/orange filler first, so that the light parts of my hair are also yellow/orange before dying? Or do you think the colour 7a is to light, to need to fill hair first ?
    Thanks and sorry for the really long question!

    • @nvennhairbeauty

      no that's a great question and very thorough. i hope my response is getting to you in time. we've been dealing with all this covid stuff going on and things are finally settling down.
      typically you only need to fill your hair if you are going darker by 3 or more levels. that beings said, if your lighter parts are really porous, a fill color would help the color to look more saturated and it will also look more even roots to end. did you try coloring it already? if so, how did it turn out?

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ohhh you should always leave it on for the manufacturers suggested processing time BUT the trick is to formulate properly for that. if the hair is really porous you probably just want to use a demi and the processing times for MOST of those are usually 15mins. hopefully that helps.

    So I have a question. When you say add like a blue toner do you mean literally a blue color toner? And so after it turns blue? How would you fix that?

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello how are you? not blue like the fashion color, when i say blue i mean a blue pigment. it won't turn blue if you mix it properly. different lines have different mixing instructions but as a general idea, in a 30g bowl of color i would put maybe 1-2gs MAX of blue pigment in a level 10 color and maybe up to 10gs of blue pigment in a formula with level 1. how long have you been doing hair for?

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it depends where you are filling from and filling to. if you give me the starting level and the 'desired level with tone' i can help you formulate. for example, you can say that your client is a starting level 8 and wants to be a level 4 golden brown.

    Heeey so I have a question! I'm trying to go red after bleaching and playing with pinks and purples but the dye is not holding. It fades out kinda gingery and sticks to the roots and obviously looks lovely in that roughly one inch lol. In places it looks a bit dull, almost grey and I know I've obviously bleached the life out of it so is adding pigment actually going to save it? What am I supposed to be actually using here, is it different to dye? And is it worth my time or is my hair now going to hold nothing?

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      GREAT question. I cant tell you if its worth your time or not without seeing it. If it feels like cotton candy when it's wet then it's too far gone.
      By the sounds of it though it sounds ok. If its only fading to a gingery color then it's still holding pigment. The only way the color will start staying better is if you start restore the protein that was stripped away from the bleaching.
      Using a deep conditioner or a protein based conditioner (like our polish www.nvenn.com/products/shampoo-series ) will give the pigment something to bind to in your hair. As your hair gets healthier, the color will start to stay longer. Until then, you'll just have to keep coloring it 😘

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ohh good! we still get comments on it REGULARLY so don't worry about it being old. you are correct! for the areas that are yellow and orange, use both tones in the toner. if there are areas that are just yellow, just use violet. if there are areas that are just orange, just use blue. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, on the areas that don't need any correcting, just use natural. there are no short cuts to great hair, mix different toners for each band of color and you will get an even result. how long have you been doing hair?

I don’t actually do hair, I more wanted advice to discuss my toning problems with my regular stylist (who I am really happy with in general) but I know my hair stresses her because it always wants to be warm and goes brassy extremely quickly even with proper after care but I think she just uses a violet toner all over so I will pass on your suggestions for next time and fingers crossed it will tone better! Thanks again x

      if you want to neutralize it, do the same level with blue. so if your hair is a level 7, do a 7blue. BUT remember each band of color needs a different formula. its best to get this corrected in a salon. if you put that on something that is blonde, itll look blue 🤓.

    So if your a level 10 and want to do a root smudge at the brown you can put a 8 on its own... can you go lower would I have to do a 7 with gold or 6 with gold?

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ideally after 2 levels you would fill but that's not always the case in the salon. we always explain to the clients the pros and cons of doing both. with 3 levels, you can get away with not filling it but it'll fade a little faster. the good thing though is that the color will still look nice (make sure to process for the FULL TIME). from a 10 to a 6 we would definitely fill the hair.

    HI just learning about bleaching and toning, I have been asked by a new client to take her from a 5 to ice white . Know she has already has bleached hair and roots are about 1/2 inch long . I have manage to do a test piece on her hair ,it took about an hour to fully lift but still had that golden tone to it . By the way I have never done a lift like this ,so it does scare me to think the bleach had to be on this long !!! Anyway if you think this is not advisable to do please say , but if this is ok then what toner would i use to get it to this fashionable ice white . Ps I am a qualified hair dresses but not over touched into full head bleaching .

    • @nvennhairbeauty
      @nvennhairbeauty  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi tanya! how are you? thanks for reaching out. here are some tips and then you can ask me questions about what you want more details on.
      1) ice white usually takes a few sittings
      2) lightner can sit on for an hour but it is usually pretty dead by then, i'd recommend mixing smaller scoops and mixing more often to maintain full equivalent lifting power (we have a few bleach and tone videos--> i'm not sure if you have seen them yet.
      3) check the foils often, a test strand is good but she might have had highlights or something different on a part of her head that you didn't test and that hair would get compromised a lot easier.
      4) you are going to likely need more than 1 toner. each band of color will require a different toner to ensure the same result
      i will be on a youtube live this thursday at 10amMST talking about toners so if you are around jump on and we can try to chat a bit more then.😅

I felt bad saying anything but it wasn't even CLOSE to what I wanted... it's like she didn't listen to what I wanted idk she tried to say it's because my hair isn't layered but it wasn't even like she tried to blend it
