    I have one of these for the exact same reason. I updated the BIOS on my Shuttle HOT-409 motherboard this past week with it. I now have LBA support on my 486. Great video as always Phil.

    In the late 90's I corrupted a BIOS when my water cooling leaked on the motherboard. I had an older motherboard around which used the same BIS chip so I booted that, removed the chip while running and plugged in the one from the water damaged PC and flashed that bios from DOS there. It worked. :)
    Today I have lots of programmers for all kinds of ROMs, CPLDs and FPGAs as I'm into electronics. I've flashed a soldered SMD bios. Just unsolder it and solder it to the adapter board and flash it in a TL866 or something like that.

    Even to this day we still have socketed BIOS chips. I remember seeing an Asrock Z170 motherboard with a socketed BIOS chip actually. And the BIOS chip of my Asus Z9PE-D16C/2L dual LGA2011 motherboard based on Intel C602 chipset is also socketed.

    I have been using a manual programmer for years now , I got one of those cheap programmers on eBay.
    best thing of it is you can flash patched bioses , I embed a sata PCI ROM to allow me to use those cheap PCI sata controllers from China to make them boot able with XP and pre XP builds.
    you can also cross flash certian bioses , P2 Era PC-Chips motherboards are especially good for this as a lot of the boards are identical but for some reason they only updated some of them...

    Looks promising. Was actually looking for something like this since I have a 486 with a non-flashable BIOS chip, FIC 486-GVT-2 to be precise. Will have to look into these sometime.

      +Deksor Not worth it for me, especially when lack of resources come to mind. I was able to do it once with a Pentium MMX build, but that's really about it.

    Newer motherboards like Asus or Gigabyte can work also as bios flashers. Just plug in the power. Asus P9x79 even didn't need a CPU to flash it. I needed to update the bios on it, because it couldn't recognize the CPU. But as I had no compatible CPU at first I taught I'm stuck. Later I realized that I could just format a USB stick to FAT32, load the bios file, stick it in the special USB-port and press the flash button. With only the 24-pin MB power connected. I guess thats why they also might have the chips soldered.

    Phil, have you ever done the BIOS hot swap before? I remember having to do that when a mate toasted his A7V-133 BIOS.
    There's something about pulling a chip from a running computer, and replacing another. It's like crossing the streams - the thing that you just KNOW goes against everything you've ever been told/learned about technology, but it's the right action for the process.

    I also had an issue with Windows 10 64 bit USB drivers. It claimed that there was a problem with them.
    So I downloaded the drivers for one of their other programmers the Stager VSpeed Series Programmer Software ( VS4000 / VS4800 / VSD8000 )
    www.stg51.com/english/downloadshow.asp?id=12
    and only installed the USN drivers from this package. It all worked rather well after that.

    Isn't the soldered "bios" issue irrelevant since the UEFI equipped motherboards usually have an read only redundant UEFI for backup?

    • @RealGengarTV
      @RealGengarTV 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      On newer motherboards that is

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GengarTV And some boards have dual BIOS, like Gigabyte for example. True. I was mostly going by newer boards, but still old ones. Like Athlon 64 for example.

    • @RealGengarTV
      @RealGengarTV 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess that redundant red only UEFI is not standard in all UEFI grade motherboards which was my initial impression.. Still, good vid on helping elder, corrupted bioses get back on track :) Perhaps an video on other functionalities and chips on the Genius flasher is a good idea?

    Wish these existed back in 2012. I had one retro PC that had a BIOS failure, and replaced the board with another 486 board (shortly died of ISA slot short circuit), and now it has a SS7 board in it. Want one right now, but it's from China, and who knows what ships from over there.

    • @Dxceor2486
      @Dxceor2486 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WinVistaUser2 You can repair it !
      Power on your ss7 motherboard with a bios flashing tool and your 486's bios rom, take the bios from the 486, remove the one inside you ss7, and replace it with the 486's bios, and then flash it ! Once this is done, you can put back both bioses from where they came and then try to boot your 486 ^^
      It's called BIOS hotswap. I've tried it and it worked successfully ! (I tried a bios rom on my pentium 3 that came from a slightly different motherboard and it bricked the bios. Knowing BIOS hotswap, I used one of my pentium 2's motherboard that was laying around, and it worked !)
      The best software to do this in my opinion is called "uniflash". The website is dead, but it's still present on the wayback machine (and you can still download it from there)

    • @RetroPCUser
      @RetroPCUser 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deksor Darn. Forgot to mention that I got rid of the board since it also suffered from more issues: PSU connection quit working, and the CPU connection was giving out, but the CPU still worked in the other board I had. I sold the AM486 DX-4 120 and AM5x86-133 CPUs back in December, 2014 to a guy in Canada.

      True, EPROMs was developed in the 1970s, and you could (obviously) get programmers for them. Of course, it is a rather specialized bit of kit, so it would be mostly people working with digital electronics and programming firmware and such that would have them, so I am not surprised that some people don't know about them.

    I successfully corrupted the BIOS on an Intel board. First attempt I waited until flashing was half way through before pulling the power, but it still booted, so next time I pulled the power as soon as it started flashing, and that worked. I then tested to see if the boot block recovery feature actually worked, but it didn't. The floppy started to work, made some noises, but then just stopped, and BIOS is still dead.

    • @philscomputerlab

  • @tx-oclab7852
    @tx-oclab7852 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    no need for one of those with modern motherboards. most of them have 2 bios chips, os that if the bios is corrupt on the main on, the backup one will active and restore the main chip. Also some motherboards have the ability to restore bios from usb stick/ floppy even when bios is totally corrupt with no cpu/ram inserted

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TX-OC Lab Need aside, the chips aren't removable any way, so you don't even have the option. Newer boards do make it a lot easier with flashing from USB rather than boot floppy.

    É muito trabalhosa a instalação dos programas e drivers para este Programador Genius G540, mas eu descobri uma maneira eficaz para o sucesso, eu faço desta maneira a muito tempo e não
    falha uma, veja o passo a passo abaixo:
    1 - instale primeiro o driver de USB para Windows 10 ( mas como? )
    2 - vá neste Link e siga rigorosamente os passos:
    answers.microsoft.com/pt-br/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings/windows-10-esse-aplicativo-foi-bloqueado-pela-sua/2bbe03c3-c3ab-43cc-a49a-db17bd670ba6
    3 - Agora siga o procedimento de instalação do driver USB anexo ao CD ou arquivos de instalação dos drivers USB do G540.
    4 - Pronto instale agora o programa do Genius G540 após a instalação dos drivers.
    Para quem gosta de usá-lo na plataforma LINUX, visite estes links:
    bues.ch/cms/hacking/toprammer.html -
    www.sharewareconnection.com/g540tool.htm -

    NOTA: é importante que a porta USB forneça mais que 230mA de corrente ou este programador não funcionará corretamente.
