Adventure Time Review: S8E2 - Don't Look

- The Legend of Dead Mountain foretells of a treasure that turns one into what they wish to be. Yet as Finn and Jake find out, the real treasure is a pair of cursed eyeballs that transforms people into what the viewer perceives them to be. Stuck with these eyes, Finn discovers some of his own faults which he isn’t ready to cope with, but with the help of his friends manages to restore his self-image and undo the curse. What a brilliant episode of Adventure Time this was!

TheKalluto Depends of at what point it happens. I like to think that at some point he stopped seeing him as the Lich. (But it would be funny because it wouldn’t change the way he acts so he'd look like the Lich and act like Sweep P)

I think there's a important detail about ice Kings transformation that people may have missed, and that is that he's in his underwear symbolizing that Finn still sees them as Simon but in a undignified and humiliated state

I might be thinking of the episode where Betty comes to Ooo b'/c Simon made a portal to the past & Ice King got blasted by a magic cube that turned him normal, but was slowly dying b/c the magic was keeping him alive for 100+ or hundreds of years.
I might be misremembering, but I also think Finn might see IK as Simon in only his undies is b/c he see's Simon the same way he was, vulnerable & defenseless, just a squishy meat sack in a world of magic w/ no real defense, but your own fists.
That or it was b/c Finn saw IK fall outta a tree which caused IK's robe to roll up & that image was fresh in his mind.

Honestly, Finn is just the most pure hearted and precious kid. Honestly, I think Finn is the Captain America of Ooo. He's Captain Ooo and he could abso-toot-ly wield Mjölnir. He's as pure and good as they come. Even his revenge or anger is often pretty weak or even kind, and his worst mistakes are pretty minor compared to other characters. He's damn near incorruptible, and has a heart that just doesn't quit. He's the hero Ooo needs, and deserves. He is... JakeMan! Nana-nana nana-nana JakeMan! Jakey-Man, Jakey-Man does whatever a Jakey can, he can stretch, and grow big. He loves to fight, and likes to dig... look out! Here comes the Jakey-Man!
(Honestly, Jakesuit Jakey-Man would be an awesome superhero! He's like Mr. Fantastic, Venom, Hulk, and Captain Ooo all in one. They could also split up and, Jake is also AntMan-Giant Man too! Jakey-Man is super OP!)

One interesting theory I heard about the Yurt was that the pizza boxes were originally rats. Over time as the hermit grew hungry, he would be hungry enough to eat the rats that wandered in, and the eyes would turn them into food (pizza).
Oooh, I really like that idea!
i had a more mundane idea. that the hermit actually called for pizza delivery, and turned the pizza deliverers into the rats :P
Imagine exaggerating food portions based on how hungry you were and how much food was left.
A small amount of food while hungry would nearly vanish and provide no nourishment.
A large amount of food while full would become immense and disgusting.
He had to order delivery. I figure the rats were just company.
Also, naivety would be an excellent catalyst for change. The world to a baby is fantastic and ever changing, the world to an experienced person is mostly in line with reality, but any changes done are stubbornly cemented.

I never drew the parallel between Finn and NEPTR and Finn and Martin, very interesting and sad. Well, at least its been clear that Finn cared above NEPTR even if he did treat him badly. That's something he has over Martin.

Well Finn did have a bit of an arc over time with him.
Personally would've loved to see Finn's idea of Marcy in his head. But I think I can generally guess. Just a radical dame who likes games.

Pretty sure PB transformed like she did because Finn sees her as a "bro" now, instead of the love intrest that she used to be. Their relationship has grown beyond that of Finn's one-sided crush and they are now very good friends. I think PB saw herself as a teen boy heartthrob when he just meant it in the way of being his homie. His confused reaction and exclamation of "I don't know. I'm not a psychiatrist." was probably him just being embarrassed that she found out what he thought of her since she most likely thought he saw her as something more mature and sophisticated. Well that's what I think at least. You usually do a way better job of analyzing things than I do anyways.

While I agree if more characters were transformed by the eyes it would bog down the episode, If Finn saw Sweet P, I think the entire tone of the story would change.

I realized that the way Finn saw himself was like his father but I didn't realize that parallel of how they treat their sons until you pointed it out. It kinda hurt me to see that if I'm being honest, especially because I know that Finn does care for NEPTR. Maybe not enough but he does care.

I've actually noticed that a few seasons back. Someone probably pointed it out to me from an old roleplay forum I used to be a part of, but when Finn created the sphinx-like creature to fight against Goliad (or whatever her name is, it's been a long time), he whispered "Happy birthday", whereas he doesn't even show any care for Neptr. We've also noticed how during the earlier seasons we see Neptr in the basement, or just plain neglected, and it was kinda sad. I'm glad Finn realizes his mistakes, and I hope we see more of those two now that it's kinda sorted out.

To respond to Finns height... you were completely right. In the finale, the last thing bonnie says to Finn is that “he’s gotten taller”.
For me the most important part is Finn seeing Ice King as Simon. In spite of all the things Ice King has done...Finn truly sees him as a tragic, redeemable, not harmful person who just needs help.

I don't believe that Finn has any fatherly inhibitions. If anything, he seems to be a great parent figure for BMO, as both Finn and Jake let his imagination run free, like the Angle Face episode where they roll with BMO's robot cowboy shtick for them tasty sentient sandwiches. It just happens to be that BMO is the first child and gets all the attention.

Forgive the pun, but this review was very insightful! I was wondering why NEPTR was the breaking point for Finn and you gave an excellent explanation for it. Very well done.
+randomatorPHD plus, another good reason is that, on the whole, Finn is a good person, and would naturally see himself as a monser if he accidentally killed anyone, let alone his own 'son'
I wonder if him saying "Did I kill Neptr!?" Was him feeling guilt for killing a good person or him genuinely feeling concern for Neptr's wellbeing
Immediately after saying that, he starts to realize how much he really does care and says as much, and so thinking he'd "killed" him was enough to drive him over the edge. He later, upon returning to normal, calls Neptr "My son." Neptr is his boy, always has been, and he loves him. It was sweet later when Finn offered to take Neptr on an adventure.

I never even realized how badly Finn treated NEPTR until you pointed it out in this video. WOW. O_O
I'm still so interested to see what Finn would have seen FP as. Their relationship wasn't very clear at this point and FP faded more to the background. In my mind Finn was still a bit smitten her and is only now starting to understand the severity of his prior actions.I could see it going so many ways with different transformations perhaps having a Jake like situation where his view of her changes throughout the episode.
ive noticed that the writing and narrative style of AT has evolved from surreal, out-of-nowhere humour and "wtf" moments (seasons 1-2) to deep-thinking, psychological, heavy theme/issue coverage and is overall more mature (seasons 5-7). i wonder if there will be a third movement before season 8 is over, or if it has chosen a style to continue in until it ends.
Another great vid, Elk. I've been a NEPTR sympathizer for a good while, and was glad to see him have his day. The recall to Hot to the Touch really drove your point home on Finn and Martin - another gag turned into a heavy plot point for the Adventure Time.
Looking forward to the teen heart throb PB analysis. :P
I am rather sceptical as to how Finn would see Flame Princess after their break up. I find that the strain in Finn's relationship would remind him of his need for love and his view towards Cinnamon Bun would remind Finn of himself when he was with Flame Princess. If Flame Princess were to be depicted in Finn's eyes, he would probably revert into her first design to when Finn first met her, indicating of his joy towards their past.
In a future episode, I'd be happy to see Finn dwell upon many of his sad experiences and try to confront them; such as trying to actually be more friendly with Flame Princess as she is now getting the NEPTR treatment. I would also find it very entertaining to see how Magic Man would be represented towards Finn's eyes. If they were to meet, I would find it as a great nod if Finn transformed him into a foot. As Magic Man once did to Finn. It would be a "an eye for an eye" moment for the both of them.
It's true about what you said about trying to see more of the other characters; it would actually help us understand more symbolism towards the characters as to how Finn sees them, and what probable spoiler it may create.

Marcy would be a fuckin’ RIPPED teen rock-band member (in reference to the extreme amounts of strength she has been shown to be capable of, along with her rather rebelious personality compared to Finn’s other mentor figures ie Jake and PB)
Sweet Pea would initially be a nigh-perfect replica of the original Lich design, yet as soon as he begins to talk with his little baby voice, he turns into a smaller less intimidating version of him with suspenders and what not.
Gunter would be Orgalorg with a penguin mask
And i have no idea what Flame Princess or Lemon Grab can be and at this point im to afraid to say something incorrect or stupid (since its been a while since i watched this show, man)

that Flame Princess view doesn't really seem to work with her character anymore... (since his relationship with her bombed harder than Ooo during the great mushroom war)
maybe turn into a office worker? (to show that she takes her jobb more seriously than the other fire monarchs before her) or another teen-boy heartthrob? (since Finn did go through a simiair situation with PB, though it ALOT less immediate and embarassing)

+Touko White (Hilda) Plus when he turned into a red monster, he LOOKS like his father. The red represents Martin's jacket and the spikes on Finn's shoulders are similar to his father's unique outfit. Furthermore, Finn has a strange outline of what appears to be a beard like his father. This episode is amazing!!
Adventure time's a tease. When I saw ice king turn into Simon my heart skipped a beat but that's when we found out the changes are only visual.
It's true that Neptr gets his moment of glory at the end, but if you think about all the events that transpired in order for him to get a modest celebration, it's still quite sad. Neptr has withstood Finn's poor treatment of him for so long: forgotten, used, and even turned into an inanimate object. Once he is celebrated, it was simply people paying him positive attention. Neptr had to withstand a lot of bad stuff just to be paid attention. It would be *so* easy to pay more attention to him consistently and celebrate him the way they did at the end, yet it took all that time and mistreatment for Neptr to be given the sort of treatment that should already be given him frequently.
This episode showed that Finn is a truly good person. He has enough empathy to feel awful for viewing Neptr as an object, something Martin wouldn't give a crap about. Finn does indeed have a few of his father's negative traits but his own good ones far out weighs them. Him seeing Ice king as Simon was pretty much proof.
I was amazed that the characters even transformed so casually, without showing amazement at all at what happened to them. I thought Adventure Time had moved past fanciful, fable-like magic; I don't know why I thought that.
Damn this video is 7 years old. Just show how great the show is and how well it’s lessons still hit to this day.

I loved this video as well as all the other ones. These give me a new veiw of adventure time. I love that about how you perceive the somewhat obscure focuses that go unnoticed in the series. Simply AMAZING!
While Finn inherited Minerva's helping and caring spirit, he also inherited some of Martin's habits of using people. However, like Martin, he still feels somewhat bad in the end.
When I watched this episode, I immediately thought of your videos on Finn growing up. Distored perceptions are a characteristic of adolescence, and I thought this episode might have to do with how Finn sees himself in this crossroads of his life. His childish - but sadly relatable - wanting to be taller, as you pointed out, seems to hint at this.

I've only recently subscribed, but I really love your videos! Deconstructing "kids" media is so much fun for me. Whenever I watch an new AT or SU episode I'm excited to get your response. It's annoying that people think critiquing/deconstructing is the same thing as hating that thing, where clearly we wouldn't do it unless we were really invested. A+ 10/10
If I remember correctly, Finn needed neptar to help a burning village, so it wasn't really the same way that Martin treated Finn.
ngl a follow up filler "what-if" episode where eye-ball Finn goes around looking at people he knows would have been very interesting and fun

Finn is one of the best written heroes Imo. Just like Peter Parker / Spider-Man both have their heroic and pure side but both make mistakes and have ugly sides to themselves. Thats why I like em. I can relate with them

One Of My Top Ten Favourite Adventure Time Episodes.
You raise an interesting point with Jake; he's so easy going, to the point of appearing enlightened, (and he does get to 50th deadworld, so it's not just appearances...) because he's a dog. He IS OK with himself. He's a goo'boy who doesn't have a strong grasp on abstract reasoning* (out of sight out of mind, oftentimes...) or planning for the future.
Even with his midlife crisis, there was a lot of growth from seeing and doing, not just considering...(he went out to live as a brick, for instance, rather than read textbooks on structural integrity of kiln-dried bricks, or the social structure of wild rabbits, etc. When he tried reading about rainicorns, he kept passing out. He's a DOG.
But as always; Adventure Time handles these little enrichments with alacrity AND grace.
*Note: I _LOVE_ that Jermaine chooses to embrace abstract impressionism in his painting; implying he is aware of these dog-based personality traits which could use improvement; and eager to improve himself and overcome them in a 100% Jermaine solution. (...or _a Germaine Jermaine._ A-thank ya! 😉)

I would also say for the hermits house that theres some vias at play.
The hermit probably didnt turn most people he sees into objects, but the few he did all stayed at his house for obvious reasons.
Unrelated question; Do you think Jake's kids grew so fast because of his shapeshifting DNA? Because when he and Jermaine were born, Jerm was a normal pup and as we know Jakey popped out and danced a jig and sung to his mommy and daddy.
Do you think other pups or rainacorn pups also grow fast, or just specifically Jake's kids?

Finn seeing the Ice King as Simon makes me believe that, even after all the bad things ice king has done, Finn still sees him as a normal human.
