Whilst the confident Jeremy and Richard challenge the local authorities, 'Captain Slow' would rather challenge a young man in an old Mitsubishi Evo.
The team is on an epic road trip across the western side of the United States in three front-engined supercars. With Jeremy Clarkson in a Lexus LFA, Richard Hammond driving the new Dodge Viper and James May choosing the latest Aston Martin Vanquish, a glorious soundtrack is guaranteed, as are furious arguments about which is best as the trio head from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and on to Palm Springs. Along the way, the three presenters take in racing circuits, airborne attacks and a race against the police before making a break for the Mexican border with a terrifying penalty for the last car to make it. Meanwhile, back in the studio, legendary Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood is the star in the Reasonably Priced Car.

@@bringsik100 because if you're racing someone who has a chute odds are it's required by NHRA due to the speed they achieve by the end of the 1/4. (the faster the car the more equipment the NHRA requires like roll cage, fuel cell, parachute, extinguishers etc. or they wont let you run)

Young people are going to race anyways, the world over this is true. Might as well try to get them off of the public streets if you can.

Ben Ward Its what happens when you live in a retirement town with 20,000 people. Its mostely supposed to be old people that like golfing ( hence why there are so many golf courses.) What they weren't suspecting was the big car scene that popped up. Great thing is, theres a quarter mile road next to the high school, but its poorly maintaned, and theres usually cops and geezers hawking the place. Moral of the story, avoid coming to Sheridan Wyoming. Place is a absolute cockfest.

AstralDragoon basically chevy engines. LS is the engine code. ususally found in corvettes and camaros and stuff.

The second I saw the chute on the back of the pickup, I knew he was done for. What I like about drag racing is it puts all aspects of racing together at once. Top speed, acceleration, control, and the driver's skill. Plus it's so much nicer to go to a several hour event and see hundreds of races than just one drawn out one.

See, the problem with this is that Clarkson and squad underestimated the kind of drag races we do on this side of the pond. That Evo is the slowest thing I've seen on a strip, and it destroyed a legit supercar.

The reaction times are accounted for in the timings. Still not enough to beat purpose built drag cars.

If your car does 125mph within the 1/4 mile it has to have a roll-cage, and if it does 150mph within the 1/4 mile it has to have a brake-chute. So if the car has a chute (like the pick-up in this car), be warned.
Do dodge demons require a cage and parachute? They do 150.

Nothing to do with American muscle. Those are highly modified, if not purpose built, cars, running on nitromethane race fuel and putting out like 3000hp.
American muscle as such, as it comes from the factory, is actually pretty terrible, piss weak, idiotically inefficient and would lose to a hatchback on an actual circuit. They become decent drag cars ONLY after extensive modification the cost of which exceeds the cost of the car itself. And you can do that to literally any car and most other cars would need even less work than a muscle car. The truck probably has had some 150-200k put into it and costs about a tenth of that every month to keep going with frequent rebuilds and replacements. The only thing actually remaining from the truck is the outer shell, which has likely been recreated in fiberglass. Having a pick up truck or other goofy look on a dragster is a meme and a joke in on itself.

@@danielmcdermott7785 Not really. For one the HP for the displacement is generally quite poor. The archaic suspension prevented you from using much of it. American cars have a certain handling reputation for a reason. It doesnt hold true anymore because after doing the same for 50 years they finally start to innovate and get with the times, but for the longest time it was pretty hopeless. American automotive industry is basically bankrupt because they make such great cars, right?
Nothing wrong with liking them, for whatever reason, but you gotta be objective.

All of those drag cars are tuned to drive straight, the stock tuning in those stock cars is for the real world (roads with turns).
A tuned Skyline has beaten a Veyron before in the quarter and even half mile, I'm not really surprised those stock super cars got beaten on the drag strip.

Jesus Christ thats a pretty stupid statement, since all three of those cars were built to go around more grueling tracks and withstand the Nurburgring and made under 7 minute times, can hit 200 mph from the factory with little to no effort and still be comfortable daily cars, the Viper and LFA have 2 different V10s one being the biggest displacement and 1 being the smallest and also the smallest and lightest high revving production V10 ever built, made out of Carbon Fiber, Titanium and had engineers put thousands of hours developing them and last time I checked a "modified" SRT Viper and Aston Martin Vanquish would have demolished the youths easily.
That whole built and not bought discussion is utter nonsense since those cars were built from the factory to go fast which is why its so expensive and when they are modified can go even faster.
Say modified cars always beats stock cars or in the case of a few tests (FQ400 vs Lambo, GTR vs the World) ingeniously engineered sports cars beat supercars (Well now thats not the case anymore) , cuz that whole discussion is just stupid.

I’ve seen some pretty fast drag cars in the U.K. most of them though are American and nearly all use American engines though.

Top Gear was the best automotive TV show ever. I've seen the US version(it sucked ass) and the Australian version (not as good as BBC) . These 3 people plus Andy Wilman are what made this show. It was funny and daring. They traveled the world and got into a few messes. Many funny and jaw dropping moments on this show. Sad that it ended for the guys.

They are just pretty cars for rich kids they arent superquick, but they are stock, all the others had thousands of £ put under the hood, imagine an LFA or Porche moded like that they would walk away.

+Hector Vesalius They tend to blow up, European cars don't allow for much overpressure in superchargers without either overheating or bursting their blocks, Superchargers are King here, No replacement for Displacement, V8 with a supercharger or go home.
a a bored out 350 or 400 wearing 10+ pounds of boost from a supercharger, will eat anything europe can put on a strip.
Its all about acceleration, bigass superchargers with big ass blowers means more horsepower off the line, where the european standard turbocharger requires exhaust and engine RPM to catch up before it can provide boost, hence the term "Turbo Lag"
Some of these cars and trucks made for drag are pushing 200+ MPH in a quartermile, pretty sure no production car on earth can even attempt to match that.
Logan Shealy They arent made for either. They are made to have a big price tag (to make money for the manufacturer) and pretty numbers on a brochure. They are made to be driven on the streets by people who cant drive, they are also made to last some 10 years (race cars are expected to last tough the season at best).
Strip or track supercars will lose to actual race cars. Race cars are not street legal for good reasons.
Its ridiculous to say supercars are made for the track. They most certainly are not. What do you need diamond encrusted dials, leather seats with 7 massage and heating settings? For racing?!
Supercas are just brands. Just like with clothing and accessories. You can get a one-of-a-kind perfect tailor made suit specially for you for less than you a fancy brand one off the shelf. The tailor made one is better in every possible way, but it doesnt have a fancy badge. Labels is all shallow people have to feel better about themselves.

Not all of it was "American iron". I think the point wasn't that they were racing against American cars, it was that they were racing against modified cars. They obviously have a strong bias for bought cars over built cars. That's what was so humbling about it. Hell, Hammond was driving a Viper.

There was nothing humbling about losing to a modified car. Not everybody buys a car in hopes of smashing the sound barrier. Most who have the privilege to choose, buy cars that feel right, that feel good to drive. Modded straight-liners don't give any of that sort of feeling.
