What Makes Bill One Of The Most Terrifying Villains In Film History

  • Kill Bill Vol 1 and Vol 2 are probably at the top of Quinten Tarantino's filmography. The two movies staring Uma Thurman and David Carradine as Bill will forever be two of his crowning achievements. But other than The Bride's spectacular performance, one thing that really makes this movie great is the villain Bill. Though we don't see much of him in Vol 1, his presence is felt throughout the entirety of Kill Bill.

    Bill was great.
Bill: When you didn't come back, I naturally assumed that Lisa Wong or somebody else had killed you.
Oh, and for the record, letting someone think that someone they love is dead when they're not is quite cruel.
I mourned you.... for three months.
And in the third month of mourning you, I tracked you down.
Now, I wasn't trying to track you down. I was trying to track down the fucking assholes who I thought killed you.
    So, I find you.
    And what do I find?
Not only are you not dead, you're getting married, to some fucking jerk, and you're pregnant. I... overreacted.
    *dramatic pause*
    Bride: You Overreacted!?
    Bill : I'm a killer.

Are there teachings of something that is forbidden but yet they do every time I really wonder why they did it though. I really love the fact that in the iconic superman speech, he doesn't really understand superman. Sure, superman is an all-powerful alien man who is from space and you could argue clark kent is the real disguise. But... he is still clark kent. He was raised on earth, he's a normal dude besides the powers. He's not a hero out of obligation or a vow like spider-man or batman, he's a hero because he can be. He has the powers to save lives, and so he does. He chooses to be superman.

There was a short lived crime show with rufus sewell (I can't remember what it was called) but one episode had the killler be a child psychopath who was poisoning people with foxglove, at the end he is talking about how the character of Superman was based on Nietzche's idea of the Uper-mech "up up and away", and I though "No, you've gotten it ass backwards, superman's real power isn't flying or invulnerability, its that he CHOOSES, every day, to use those things to serve other people."

A thought I had when you mentioned that "so many of us have had Bills in our lives", combined with mentioning the anti-climax that his death is - in so many cases, while that "Bill" in each person's life may seem this unstoppable force that we're unlikely to prevail against, when you finally reach the end of that road, it's not really some grand final epic struggle to finish everything off - it IS anti-climactic, to the point where you later look back and go "wow, that's really all it took?" - the true struggle is getting to that final point.

  • @raylast3873

I think people also underestimate Beatrix as a hero because revenge stories tend to be seen as a personal thing. I.e., „the hero wants revenge for him or herself“ and this usually leads to some level of moral ambiguity.
But actually Bill‘s crime is so horrifically monstrous that there is really no other possible response to it. Once you see the entire churchfull of completely innocent people that got murdered for literally no reason, just because they happened to be acquainted with the Bride in her new life, hunting down and killing the people that did it actually becomes a pretty modest proposal. You gotta do it. There‘s no way you can let those people get away with it. Plus there‘s the fact that Beatrix inadvertently made those people into targets, which only raises the moral stakes.
It‘s actually only the presence of the child that turns the whole conflict back into a personal matter: as soon as B.B. comes into the story, the conflict becomes about the Bride rescuing her daughter and by extension, saving herself as well. The survival of her daughter means Beatrix can continue the redemption arc she had been on before the wedding-massacre. Now this is actually about her instead of just getting justice for all her dead friends, and notably it‘s about her being able to become better, rather than just killing more bad guys.
Honestly, I‘m pretty glad there was never a Vol. 3. any additional carnage would only ruin the whole redemption story.

5:55 I keep saying this when people criticize the speech. Bill is giving his impression of Superman, not a dissertation on comic lore. This is his reading of it based on his own outlook on life and the types of things he values. If he were face to face with Superman he would likely still assume that Superman was lying if he was told any differently by the hero himself. It's also the reason he raises BB in the manner he does and throws the very candid nature of how he discusses violent topics with her in Beatrix's face.

I might be one of the fews qho preferred Volume 2 over Volume 1, but the love/hate shared between Bill and the bride was truly my favorite relationship in Tarantino's film (second to Django & the dentist). It's a tragic love story filled with resentment, but genuine hurt that makes this his best revenge stories.

As much as people love Kill Bill, it's still a seriously underrated movie. I love your video and your examination of the Bill character. Very insightful. Carradine's fight scene (deleted from the final cut) should've been left in. That's what I was looking for. (I also expected Pam Grier to fire a gun in "Jackie Brown"....which she did not. She screamed "Max! He has a gun!" instead.

@@richardm5448 Tarantino apparently expressed the idea of doing a third movie, based on Copperhead's daughter going after the Beatrix (or possibly BB) when she grew up, as Beatrix had stated she'd be understanding and waiting for such an attack. I think he also had had an idea expanding on Cottonmouth's background and the anime section of the first movie.

In that first scene of volume 2 it becomes apparent that Beatrix and bill were lovers and so bill cares a great deal for her. Nevertheless he still carries out his plan to massacre the entire wedding rehearsal party.

    • @leavoda3791
      @leavoda3791 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

But you see he doesn't actually care for her. When you care about someone, you do not think of your every move in terms of what good is it to you. When you care aboit someone, you think about what is good for them and find joy in doing things that make them happy.
Bill can't love anyone bc he doesn't understand humbleness, selflessness, compassion and love.
That is why he knows all there is about Superman, and still has no clue about his true nature.
He just doesn't understands it and what he doesn't understand he will try to bend to his will or destroy it.
      There is no middle way.
That's why Beatrix Kiddo is his opposite.
She realised she was pregnant and suddenly was awestruck at the prospect of bringing their child into his world.
She suddenly realised she must avoid that at any cist.
And her crying in the bathroom of a motel whily BB watches "innocent" cartoons instead of violence infused action movies, is her realisation that even though Bill is dead and she is free from him, nothing she does will ever be able to erase the permanent evil he seeded into BB and herself.
That is the fight noone wants to make a movie about, bc there is no happy ending or epic final boss to defeat. It is a tortureous fight they both will have to endure for as long as they live. That is the true villany of Bill and tragedy of Beatrix Kiddo.

In actuality the anti-climax is due to Uma being injured in the reckless car crash that Tarantino insisted she do rather than a stunt woman. She had to take several months to recover from the injury to her neck and knees. She actually couldn't do any fighting scenes because of the injury. Tarantino had to rewrite the ending because of her injuries. She has permanent damage. Do your research.

It'd be hard to bring Bill back as the actor is now dead and the story was tied up over 2 volumes. The only reason it wasn't 1 film is it was apparently too long so Tarantino extended it into a 2nd volume and expanded upon the world and characters.

I think a reason why Kill Bill Vol 3 would be a clever film for Tarantino to make is because of his 10 movie rule. Since he counts KB vol 1 and vol 2 as one movie, a vol 3, even after he makes his next upcoming ‘the critic’ film would still abide by that rule.

Great video. Two of my favorite films of all time. My only point of contention is the idea that a Kill Bill Vol 3 is something that Tarantino would even begin to consider. There will never be a Vol 3 because the story is told. Kill Bill? Bill's dead, baby. He's dead and he's never coming back.
Now, I'm not saying that The Bride can't return in another feature and settings/plotlines/characters can't come back as well. My point is simply that Kill Bill was a complete story told in TWO volumes, and this video isn't the first time I've heard the question about a third volume being made being put forward. The concept fundamentally doesn't make sense.
Okay, I'm done. I'll see myself out. Have a great day, everyone. Don't forget to tip the wait staff.

Vivica A.Fox's little girl, is none other than the older sister of Uma Thurman's little girl (both little girls share the same father, David Carradine) and then an amazing series of events unfold and we all fall in love with
