  • In this episode Shahriar repairs another high-voltage Tektronix probe, this time a THDP0100 which is capable of measuring 6kV signals up to 100MHz. The probe does not get detected by the scope. However, it soon becomes clear that the problem with this probe is much more involved than the previous repair.
    The probe has a short-circuit inside the probe body as well as several damaged components. Each is replaced one step at a time until a final fault is also detected in the probe head. After the repair, the probe is zeroed, calibrated and used to measure a signal at 6kVpp using an Associated Research HYPOT tester.

    It's nice seeing the master himself get a "meaty" repair job. You know it's been tricky when you sense some frustration (albeit subtle) from Shahriar!

    Beautiful video. Well explained procedure. Unfortunately, with many repairs you can not easily get the firmware that allows reprogramming. I think Pooch has really good contacts in the industry ;-)

    It is interesting how many different problems this probe had. Do you reckon they were caused by the same event, or how does a probe end up with such a plethora of issues?

    • @MoraFermi
      @MoraFermi ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It could have been an ESD event on that data line -- that would definitely destroy both the resistor and the cpu, potentially the negative voltage regulator too, depending on how things are connected..

    @Shahriar For your FLIR thermal imager here, did you use the FLIR macro lens or one of the regular lenses (24/48 fov)? Image looks super sharp and in focus from up close! Usually from this close the regular lenses lose focus quick. Curious to know, thanks.

  • @0xbenedikt
    @0xbenedikt ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When he identified the processor as the issue, I expected him to give up and throw it away as I certainly would not have expected him to have access to the firmware.
    If it was me, I'd then either have salvaged the processor from another dead unit or used this unit for spares.

    The linear regulator is skewed on its pads and looks like its been reworked when you first showed it. Is that some non-linear video editing or had someone else worked on the probe before you bought it? Surprising it had so many issues.

    I can't help but notice how that cap with 4 ohms across it is slightly crooked and has an extra bit of solder. Did it get that hot in there at some point with its failure or is that part of the editing? (was soldered for testing in a later jump-cut).
