- Here is a day in a life of a third year Character Animation student in case anyone is wondering how we animators spend our days. It's mostly just classes, homework and most importantly working on our own little animated shorts in the evening!

To be honest it's stressful because I want to know what I'm going to do since I want to go to art school but at the same time not sure if it's for me because if I end up not going to art school I would do engineering
as someone whos been aspiring to go to calarts since middle school, this is so much fun to watch
and as someone who struggles with keeping the things i animate still and not bouncing around im taking small bits of info from the way you do it

@@moojoytiger3210 but that’s a good thing, the earlier you start preparing the better! If you start carrying sketchbooks around now and drawing a lot and stuff then you will have no problems getting accepted I am sure. I started going to life drawing sessions and went to the zoo every week to draw animals and sketched people in school and trains at you age as well and I believe that’s what got me in.
I’m only a freshman in hs but man I really hope I can go here. It’s only around an hour away from where I live currently, art and animation have always been my dream job

@@scribblediary237 OH, I was searching for laptops to buy and thought you used Touch-screen Chromebook (and/ or Lenovo Flex) laptops that come with Stylus Pen? Do you know anyone who draw on those?
I am not an arts major. I live in California, but attend the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley. It is so cool to see what else is out there in terms of higher education though. Very insightful video!

@@scribblediary237 This is 3 years too late but what's the difference between character animation and experimental animation? Will I get to do Across The Spiderverse with Experimental Animation because that's the reason why I want to get into animation now.
@@suezcontours6653 experimental animation is more like stop Motion and Sand Animation and things like That and character animation is more traditional 2D and sometimes 3D Animation. Even though there is some overlap between the two sometimes!

I've had my eyes set on several animation schools since middle school, but as of late I've really been wanting to go to Calarts more than ever. I know their program is fantastic and there's a great community there, it's just a shame because I don't think I'll be able to go- the tuition fee is just too high for me :') Even so, it's still nice to be able to have a feel for what student life would be like, thanks for uploading this
Today’s my first day of school (grade 12) and it wasn’t that great, I didn’t know anyone. And this video came to my recommendation again so I watched it again. It makes me feel great and hopeful.
I am so "jazzed" by the excellence of your presentations. >From one who was a student in Exp. Animation at Cal Arts, 1972-74 (living in the dorm). It was a golden magical 2 years of my of my life and I can see the golden magic has evolved into more treasures of many young person's creative Spirits. In one of your presentations the library looks almost the same, that was from the Jules Engel A113 days long ago.

That sounds amazing. All the things in you're video are things I've been trying to teach myself. Every part of your work looks fun... even the tedious stuff. Couldn't imagine actually ever getting to go to an art school (much less Calarts). It makes me a little sad, but it makes me glad you get to go. I hope you really enjoy it!

Hi! I knowww it's so expensive it's crazy. I am lucky enough that my family saved up for this for years and I also got a scholarship from the school luckily. If you are unsure about how to pay for this I would check out the CalArts Financial Aid page maybe? I think they have links to Scholarships there too...

@@bronwynhayes4053 Hello, I don't know your level but the exam you need to pass to enter the school is not as hard as the Gobelin's one. Although you need to be interested in various subject around art and animation

Going to CalArts is sort of my dream and HECK it gives me headache, all those costs per a year(man I just sit there in front of my computer when I saw the cost) and plus I have to attend there as an international student 😱 haha so much to do..

When quarantine started I wanted to start a hobby and I chose drawing cause I’ve always loved it, I finished 4 sketchbooks during 2020 and that’s when I realized I wanted to be an animator and create my own show and movie, I started looking at art colleges even though I’m not even close to college and then I found Calarts ever since I found calarts I have been working every day to get better at my art and so once I graduate high school I hope I can get into calarts.
I'm working on my own show right now! I'm using MS Paint to do the backgrounds, Flipaclip for the animation, the editing on Youcut and I'll distribute it through TH-cam. All of these are free software I got from the app store. The skills you need can be learned from TH-cam tutorials and from trial and error and hours of drawing frames.
My dad who works as a graphic designer told me that I don't need to art achool because most proffessionals didn't go to art school but learned through expirience.

Seeing so many rich people living this life while I can barely afford to pay rent really discourages me, some people are so lucky with parents and money
I‘m sorry, I feel very fortunate to have parents that were able to afford this school for me. But I am convinced that you can get many of the amazing things that CalArts offers for basically no money at all. I almost learned more on online platforms like schoolism for a 200$ annual subscription than I learned at CalArts, so definitely check that out!! You don’t need to have money to become successful in this industry if the drive is truly there I believe! Don’t feel discouraged!

Hi! I am very interested in taking animation in college. I am young and have a few years before I decide what to do in college. I have some questions, do I have to be good at drawing? What classes should I take so I can succeed in college? Do I have to be good at watercolor, photography, etc? That is all, thank you
Leah hello! Yeah, for animation you do need to have a strong basis in drawing I‘m afraid. For my college they did not expect any experience in actually animating when applying, but they want to see that you are comfortable drawing the human form from different angles in different poses and with character, understand perspective and other things. If you want to go to Calarts specifically you should check out their website to see what pieces exactly they want to see when you are applying. No need to know photography. You don’t have to learn watercolors either, just show whatever medium you are comfortable with (digital, ballpointpen, pencil etc).
I didn’t take any courses that helped me get into calarts, but I did go to figure drawing classes in the evening. Those are really helpful, and Calarts wants to see many life drawings so I can recommend that for sure. Good luck!

This video is 3 years old. So how have things been for you? I mean, the animation industry in the USA, particularly in LA isn't in very good shape lately. Disney, Pixar, Cartoon Network, Dreamworks are all laying off animators. Word is in about 2 years time, there won't be much work in animation because most work will now be outsourced overseas.
Yeah tha Job industry has been a little rough, most of my friends got laid off over the past few years and everyone is trying their best to keep their spirits up! I have just been freelancing on smaller animation projects as a background painter and animator. We all are just taking it day by day and are trying to be kind to ourselves. As long as we can keep creating and doing what makes us happy, be that here or overseas or remote or in person then I am happy :) thanks for checking in!
Funny seeing what looks different and what looks the same. Mostly it's wild seeing so much digital process, they were a *stubborn* holdout on traditional stuff vs other schools.

I‘m really sorry that it’s so expensive. There are options to at least learn what we learn through other platforms though! If you ever feel like it you should try the schoolism website for example! It’s wayyyyy more affordable and I learned more than I did at CalArts sometimes. Besides this entire year is online and they are rebuilding all of our facilities and they are not sure when they will be done, so it’s not the best time to go to the CalArts character animation program anyways these days :D
Calarts has always been my dream school and I have always loved the people there like Alex Hirsch but if I’m being honest I’m to young to get a job right now and I’m scared on where to begin…how much money does it cost, how can I make a good impression so I can stay, it’s just scary man
Hi! I feel you :D it’s super scary for me too. I will say that even though I love Calarts and I learned a lot, right now it is not the place where you can learn the most for your career. And it’s getting more and more expensive every year it seems. We are paying 50 000 a year which even with a scholarship is almost impossible to pay for. But don’t feel discouraged! Even is you don’t go to Calarts, it doesn’t mean that you can’t enter the industry. You don’t get a job because you are a Calarts graduate, you get one because you are hard working and good at drawing and networking! There’s amazing online schools and resources online where I personally learned more than in my classes at Calarts, like schoolism! And even though networking is difficult without a school sometimes there’s still conventions and people you can reach out to online once your portfolio is good enough. So don’t give up! I know of many people who left Calarts or never even attended Calarts and still got into the industry fine, and I know a few Calarts students that can’t find work yet unfortunately. So it’s not the school! It’s what you make of your own time and effort! I am convinced if you work hard every day there’s no way you won’t find a job. Good luck :))

DoctorCrazyMuffin :3 noooo don’t worry they are looking for unique voices! Traditional realism stuff is more Ringling I believe. The portrait class I am taking is the most normal realistic class that they have to offer I think and people just take it to work on their basics. But for the application they want to see your unique voice! The weirder the better! Don’t worry!

DoctorCrazyMuffin :3 I know the application can be sooo scary but don’t worry too much! The teachers here will see if you have something unique and they will value that! They do put a lot of importance into life drawing but really just to see that you know the basics of drawing you know?

It’s one of the best places to learn animation and of course they do teach you how to use the softwares

If you're concerned about which art achool to go to, go to Izzzyzzz's TH-cam channel and one of her videos explains this topic (( also I find that most of the comments help explain it further ))

Hey! I messaged you on Instagram and you gave me a bunch of advice! ^^ I was wondering how you do your film layouts! Do you draw them in separate squares and then compile? Or on separate layers but on the same project?
Sparrkie you mean the ones in the video? I try to keep them on separate layers because it always seems to pay off to have hundreds of layers but I often mess up and draw on the same layers anyways. But I did not draw in seperate squares and compiled them on that project
wow I really want to go to Calarts one day. But I really dont have any money and I dont really understand how can I get a scholarship or grant and also Im international student from a pretty poor country so I dont even know how can I accomplish this goal. Of course I have! But unfortunately it’s part of the Graphic Design school now, so the students of character animation don’t have access anymore. We work in a room called A221 now so maybe that will be the new A113 someday and be in all the films :)

Hey❤️ I know it’s really hard and really expensive, but believe me that Calarts isn’t the only way to break into the animation industry if that’s what u want to do. I love the school but there are options and classes online that cost a fraction of this tuition and if u really want it u can become even better than most students at Calarts! I know it might be disappointing now but Calarts isn’t as glamorous anymore as most people might think it is, and maybe u are even better off with not paying this much money and focusing on learning on your own instead. I for example learned way more in my gap year! Good luck and don’t give up!

But the thing is that I find myself having a harder time to focus during online classes I don't know why but that among many other reasons I'd rather go to a physical school. But I must stay realistic it is a bummer but maybe just maybe I'll be able to go to calart :)

Hey! Cal Arts always looked so cool to me but I live in England. Do you have any international students in your class?
Yeah! We are mostly international students in character animation actually, mostly Korean and Chinese and taiwanese students! I am from Germany myself, and we have two Students from England as well. Check out meppitys (Anya Butlers) TH-cam channel, she is from England as well and makes great videos about CalArts and film making

Im at the end of my junior year and im going to start working on my portfolio this summer, any tips?
Hi! Congratulations on almost being done with school :) teachers at CalArts are mainly looking for portfolios with a strong foundation, so they love seeing lots of life drawing sketches and sketches from everyday life, on trains and in zoos and in cafes and stuff like that. They also enjoy seeing many different mediums sometimes. Try to practice hands and feet drawing like crazy, and don’t hide them on your page somewhere. That’s always a red flag for teachers. Of course they like to see designs and your own ideas as well, but try focusing on the basics and drawing from life a little bit more than on drawing from imagination. If you want to be an animator you need to be able to draw the human body from every angle and in every pose, so that is what they are looking for :) good luck!

I knowwww it’s crazy 😭 you can look up financial aid on the CalArts website. And if it is still too expensive (because it really is) the online school schoolism has been so amazing. I am on a gap year rn and I am learning so so so much in taking the Tonko House Schoolism classes I am obsessed
