I got to meet Mr Hicks in the early 2000's. Having taken up the banjo about a year earlier, and having met similar folks who wanted to start a bluegrass band of newbees, and having scheduled a practice session, one of the band members announced that Bobby Hicks was a family member of theirs and would be there. We were SOOO nervous, one fellow I think chickened out but it was an experience of a lifetime. Mr Hicks gave me pointers as if we were brothers, what a gentleman, WHAT a musician.
I see that the original 1950 recording of "Faded Love" with the Rusty McDonald vocal is here on TH-cam. Search for it, listen to it, hear how it began. I find his 1935 instrumental of Maiden's prayer is here too. Search for "Maidens Prayer 1935 -- Bob Wills" and give it a listen. Bobby plays it slow as molasses compared to that. But keep in mind that people were supposed to dance to this 1935 recording, listening to it was a secondary thing.
After Bob started playing specifically for records and concerts more than for dances, & other people slowed his tunes in the early 1960's, he slowed them down too. Maiden's Prayer and Faded Love are two notables. In 1950, the original recording of "Faded Love", with a vocal by Rusty McDonald, was MUCH faster than Bob (or anyone else) did it in the 1960's. Bobby plays this MUCH slower than Bob Wills did it as an instrumental in 1935, faster than Ray Price sang it in the 60's. It's all good!

Bobby Hicks plays his number so beautiful, and so much put into it, not too much left to be played.

Bass player on speed? Goose
Not according to Bob Wills, who brought this tune to country music in 1935.
Not bluegrass, but a good rendition of a western swing standard...
